Did you install a security app like Cerberus?
Maybe you can track it, if the thief hasn't reset the device, you can try to install plan b from the app store

That sucks. Sorry to hear that. Hopefully your insurance will cover it.
Really should have had Cerberus installed. I'm sure the crook wouldn't know to wipe the device. I hear there's even free apps that do what Cerberus does now.
I do have cerberus installed so hopefully ill be able to track it.

It's really surprising that people still think any of these anti-theft tracking apps can do anything against the thieves. It's highly unlikely that you can pin-point the person who stole it with your phone's GPS/wifi/cell signal and moreover, he doesn't have to show you anything in his pocket or backpack. Yes even if you call the cops, they can't search the person unless they have the warrant.
@OP i'm sorry that you lost your phone. I hope you have the insurance.

That's good news at least. Interested to see how this plays out...
I'm assuming you already called the police? I would have told them the nexus 7 was stolen, shown them the box/receipt and told them I have tracking software installed so I would be contacting them again when I receive the signal. Maybe with all that info the cops would be much more willing to cooperate or at least let you know what your options are.

Interesting that it's taking them long to show up to a home invasion. I guess since the criminal is believed gone, you're probably last on the priority list.

Not really. Hell, I installed Life360 on my wife's phone (she wanted to see if the creepy guy next door is a sex offender) and it showed her phone's location right down to the house number. So, could you find the perp in a crowd...no, but if the dummy fires it up at his job or home, of course you could track it. Cerberus also seems to install into the devices image, so a factory reset won't wipe it out. So unless the thief is really knowledgeable, there is a good chance he could find the thief if he had Cerberus. I know I'm getting it. Just bought a Galaxy S II for the wife and a Galaxy Nexus for myself...plus the N7 of course.

Apart from log their IP address giving the police a location and take a picture of the thief's face.
That's reasonable suspicion (probable cause) that the stolen device is at a given location which is grounds for a search.
Apart from that, you're right, these anti-theft tracking apps can't do anything
Can't stand liars or thieves... with them gone. We won't have to worry about anti theft apps

I went to a job site (a car dealership) and left it in the drivers seat. It was raining and I'm guessing that with my tools and boxes, that I forgot to lock it with the remote or it did not lock. I didn't notice it missing until I went to my second job and went to hide it (which I normally do). I didn't hide it at the dealership because I was only planning on being there 20 minutes that turned into 2 hours.
I looked everywhere, being in denial, but I distinctly remember putting it in my car because it was raining and I had to conceal it while I ran out to my car.
Kinda sucks. Not only because I'll have to buy another one (I just bought one from Walmart so I can exchange it when the 32gb comes out), but also because I had a $20 case on it and an SGP Matte SP. I blame the iPad Mini. Thats probably what they thought it was!
I know there are plenty of threads about Anti-theft stuff but I'm kinda in a rush to push something to it from the play store. Ceribus or something rings a bell. Any suggestions?
I just installed Cerebus but I don't think it'll work without prior setup. I downloaded Plan B but I'm not sure it'll work either because it mentions it will only try to locate within the first 10 minutes.
Unfortunately I don't think there's anything that will provide any security without prior setup. Everything I've seen needs to be configured.
Lookout plan b... its on the market. You can push it to your device from the market website
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Yea I pushed Plan B. It went missing some time between 3:30pm and 5:30pm. I noticed it gone about 6pm. After driving back to my office to check my desk, back home, walmart, and home, it is now 11pm.
If I'd stolen a device, it would have been factory defaulted the instance I had a second to do it.
I'm in pretty good with the staff at the Dealership. My gf also works for the same group (different property though). She said they have security cameras all over. I'll get them to look at the tapes and see who it was.
Feel sorry about your loss. I don't think any security app help it, it's useless IMO. If the thief is smart enough, he/she will disable gps and wifi. So there is nothing you can do about it.
First thing i did on mine was installing cerberus. You can never be sure.

Not to mention that if you unlock and root your device you can install Cerberus as a system app so even if they do a factory reset Cerberus is still installed and active so you can track it. In this case only the thief smart enough to actually flash it with a new ROM will be free and clear. I don't remember how much it cost...I think like $1-2 was it, so even if it only gives you a 10% change of recovery...isn't that worth a couple bucks?
Dang. I know exactly how you feel. Hang in there; it may yet re-surface. I realize the almost hopeless optimism in saying that, but I`ve had my faith in humanity restored several times when losing stuff in the past. Let us know what happens! ps: Make Cerberus the first app you install with the new tab (or the old one, if/when it`s returned). good luck!
I talked to the big guy at the dealership and he told me they have security cameras there, so Monday they are going to look at them. Should be easy considering I was there for work and have my exact time there down to 2 hours.
Although I'm not sure what knowing who did it would do for me unless it was an employee... which they could fire them... but it was probably a hobo or a customer. Perhaps then one of the sales guys may know of them and hopefully has their address or something.
I haven't had any emails from those security apps that I tried...
I was thinking after I bought my new one that no only am I out the tablet but the $20 case and $20 SGP SP. So almost $300.
My mother-in-law suggested to claim it on my homeowners insurance because I had a tree fall on my home and I already paid my deductible for the year (which might be per incident). I have yet to call them yet. Probably do that Monday too.

Guys I've been had...purchased a phone from Gumtree cash on collection on 17th and it's stopped working today reported as lost or stolen...
As dreaded the phone has been blocked... So it's definitely fraud.. What are my options.... I'd like to report to the police but not sure if they'll do anything...
Has anyone had a similar experience, is there anyway of finding out the insurance company as I'd like to tell them it's fraud...?
Are the police likely to take the phone off me even if I don't get my money back?
I do have some emails, telephone number and address of the seller... Btw it was gumtree where I purchased from...
Also is it better to contact seller first to see if he'll give the money back (highly unlikely) or will that tip him off...?
Any advice would be much appreciated....

That's a very naive and stupid thing to do. To be brutally honest, it's your own fault that you didn't see this potentially being a scam. Many people, myself included, would not even consider buying from someone on the street, which is basically what you did. They took you to a set of doors which probably wasn't even theirs. Easier then going to the front door of an house right? You took the risk to purchase the phone knowing once you have it, anything could happen and that you have nothing to go against except a dodgy PAY&GO number, some throw away emails addresses, and most likely a fake address.
Again, to be honest, sadly the police are very unlikely to help you, even with the emails that you have, or the phone number. Since an insurance claim requires reporting it to the police, the police will likely have a record of the phone being reported as lost/stolen. They will simply take the phone from you and return it to the owner, and they could even charge you for handling stolen goods. Your proof (emails, phone number) isn't good enough to prove that you are a victim of a scam and therefore they will not waste time to investigate on the little leads you have.
Lesson learnt. Take it on the chin n move on.
PS: GumTree wouldn't help you. It's none of their business at the end of the day. They provide u a free service and what happens is beyond their control.

Ok so about 3 weeks ago my son busted my fiances s4 screen. There was a big hoot and hollar about why do we let our son play with our expensive phone in that thread lol. So anyway assurion did not have the phone in stock so i sold her broken one on ebay and bought her another from the sprint store. I called assurion and canceled the claim and even recieved a comformation.
Well fiance gos out to bring my dog in the house and she sees a package from fedex on the hood of her car. She opens it and its a brand new galaxy s4. She calls me and tells me. So i say no big deal ill mail this back to assurion. Well i call them and tell them what happened. They get all my info and cant find anything in there system saying they shipped me a phone. They show a canceled claim thats it. I give her the fedex number showing it came from there address but she refuses to check it. She ask am i sure i didnt order one off the internet and i tell her id be pretty sure if i just bought a $600 phone.
So i then turn my attention to fedex. I call them and say hey you left a package with a $650 phone in it on the hood of my car in my driveway about 100ft away from my house. They call the driver and he says he didnt wana come to my house bc my dog was on a runner. So i give them some crap about leaving it there and that was that.
So now i have a phone sitting in my house that assurion has no information on. It required a signature but was never signed for. Has anyone ever had an experience like this?

If it showed up, you do not have to pay for it. You might want to do research, but I HAD HEARD SECOND HAND that back in the 70s, companies used to ship stuff to people, then ask them to pay for it if they didn't return it (think CD "clubs").
I learned this after I had a 2nd poweramp shipped to me . . . and I finally reluctantly returned it . . . THEN learned about the rule/law about not having to send stuff back. RESEARCH IT

Doesn't matter if you have a phone to send back or not, they left it without signing, it's all cool in school, keep it. Just leave it boxed up for a week or two. When (and if) they call for it looking for it, play dumb, then ignore their calls.
And again research the law behind mailing you stuff.

My advice, since you've already taken the 'correct' steps to resolve this issue, is to keep the phone, still sealed up in the Fed-Ex box. Wait a billing cycle (or two) to see if any charges show up, or if Assurion contacts you again about the damaged device, and then take the appropriate action. If, after a few months, nothing further has been done/attempted by Sprint/Assurion, then I'd consider myself the owner of a new S4.

I think she was giving you a hint, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. And if the $150 does show up on your bill, you've got a $650 phone for $150.
had a similar incident back on tmo with the g2, it is currently sitting on my desk
also as teh father of a 2 year old, i happily let her play with phones (not my sgs4 though, she gets mommy's sgs3 ). there is so many learning apps and she is already so quick to learn how to navigate teh device. i wouldnt take that away from her for the world. screw everyone else and you raise your kids how you see fit
I've had this happen to me as well. Cancelled a claim on my Evo 3d, still received it with no record of it being sent. Gave it to my girl and was never charged

I'd research the laws, keep it in the box for a week of case they call, then I'd own it, root it then I'd call FedEx, and ask why the hell they left it on my car. And tell them you don't appreciate that very much.

Totally agree. My 5 year old has been playing on all my phones from the s3 to the note 2. Alot of cool apps for kids on the play store.

technically you never signed for it so technically you never "received" it lol
To those of you saying to just keep the phone.....correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't a replacement come pre-activated, meaning that it can only be used on the phone number that it was meant to be a replacement for? If so, it's still of no use unless to be sold as a bad ESN to be activated on another carrier such as Boost or similar.

On Friday after getting home from work my home was broken into. They took my TV, Chromecast and laptop along with a few other things. My question is if they connect the Chromecast to the internet would there be a way to track them? If I call google and give them the serial number would they possibly help me out?
Thank you

Technically possible? Yes (assuming the unit was set to send the chromcast ID and or MAC). Would they do it? Not directly to you. Maybe if you contacted police, letting them know this, and if they saw fit to they could issue a warrant for such information then google would act on it according to policy, that would be in a perfect world, In our world, typically, the police probably won't take the time to do it, but it's worth a shot if the value of the property stolen makes it so.
Good luck, hope they get the scumbags...and your stuff back.

No problem. I, for one, would be extremely interested in what happens, i.e. if they (cops) use this method and if it works (google helps out). So if you could update this thread, I would be appreciative as well.

Oh man, so sorry to hear that! Since you know your serial number (always a good thing), definitely let the police know. Not sure if Google can help (I believe you have to "opt in" to sending serial number, as it defaults to not unless it was registered as a development unit), but hope you get your stuff back and find the scumbags!!
Alright so I called and I told them what happened. Apparently the Serial Number is only for those to use in case the device breaks or what not. But the rep did tell me have the Detective who's in charge of my case call them to talk to the supervisor. They could have just told me sorry that's all we can do for you. But then again I brought up the Chromebook that was stolen as well. I'll keep you guys updated

What they said is actually true thats all they use it for but they can probably track the device if they were legally asked to do so...
A Police officer could do that if he had the proper court order which they can easily get since you're willing to let them search for it.
Ideas for replacement.. NOT trying to sound insensitive here.. Craigslist has DLP TVs with a white dot problem for around $50-100.. That's a 65" TV.. No thief would steal that.. It's to much to lift. They have a beautiful picture and if you talk to me, you can get the chip that fixes the white dot problem for free from Mitsubishi.
