No FM radio in Windows Phone 8? - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anybody else noticed, that none of currently announced Windows Phone 8 devices has FM radio? I'm a bit suspicious about that:
http://www.nokia.com/global/products/phone/lumia920/specifications/
http://www.nokia.com/global/products/phone/lumia820/specifications/
http://www.htc.com/www/smartphones/htc-wp-8x/#specs
http://www.htc.com/www/smartphones/htc-wp-8s/#specs
http://www.samsung.com/global/ativ/ativ_s.html
It is clearly mentioned on Lumia 900 product page
http://www.nokia.com/global/products/phone/lumia900/specifications/
FM radio was even mandatory for all WP7 devices - what's going on?

You might be onto something. This screenshot from the new sdk shows that the radio option is gone from the music+video hub. Really weird.

Read somewhere recently a discussion about how there is fm capability on the current standard chipset for wp8 but that none of the current phones announced have it enabled (for whatever reason).
IMO it comes down to the carriers. Android phones recently also have had fm capability on their chipset and not had them enabled. The likely answer to why is that carriers want money and there is no money in allowing people to use their devices to listen to music that is broadcast freely over the air. Most likely they want everyone to use online capabilities so they can make their money off the large amounts of data people use when streaming.
Never been confirmed, just my suspicion...

I didn't even catch that it was missing. While the FM receiver is nice, practically every car, house, and object has it. I would really like if they supported HD radio since it supports digital and a lot more channels. Zune HD had it, Microsoft should have mandated it for every Window Phone.

Hummmmm the Op is right....the Nokia 920 has nothing on it's specs about FM radio.
My Radar has it, but to be truthful.....I have only used the FM Radio function 1 time.
Will you truly miss FM radio??
It is really not a deal break for me.
As long as I have wifi, I can hear radio from the web, or my own playlist.
It is however weird to just drop a feature and not give a reason why. I could see it if such a feature chewed up battery life......but I don't think FM radio eats more then MP3 play does it????

Well i think that downloading third party apps, which may cause harm to the device or consume more battery, since they may use more features, isn't the best way to go...i do not personally own a WP device right now, but i'm used to listen to the radio a lot on my current phone

The problem is the small amount of data that is standard on the two major carriers.

That would be poor, if tey would have dropped this feature.
So both the new lumias don't have a FM radio which will allow the users to access the local FM channels. Although the hardware (WCN3660) has support for FM transceiver but for some reason, FM has been switched off. Can some one answer the two questions that are coming to my mind:
1. Can a firmware upgrade enable the FM receiver functionality?
2. Can a third party app access the hardware chip and allow a user to access FM radio channels?

Until I can get my hands on the retail release SDK for WP8, I can't tell for certain what is going to happen. I guess we need to wait and see.

"Windows Phone 8 does not support the FM radio feature." This makes me very sad I loved the Radio on my Windows Phone 7.

Re
Now when NDA is over, I can tell you some background info. What I have heard from a Microsoft guy: WP8 does not have FM Radio, because then haven't implemented it in time and in a reasonable quality, apparently it was low priority task when migrating form WinCE to WinRT. But there is a chance FMRadio will work again in later update

I would miss it. I listen to the radio on daily walks, and while doing chores outside. Now, I realize I can probably stream, but that's burning up my data, so I agree with others, this appears to be the carriers way of pushing us to data.

Gonna buy htc 8s.. but anyone have news about fm radio? Does it REALLY comes in update? I used to listen to it on my way

It has not been added by the portico update but may come in the next update which is supposed to be much bigger. I have heard that the reason it is not included is because the tuner application was not finished in time for release.
It may or may not be added but I think it def. could

If it "could" i could buy one. If it "could not". I could not buy one.

Yea. FM radio is pretty big to me if I can't listen to local sports as they do not stream then unless you pay $50 a year or something. MLB is played over local radio but, to get it streamed you have to pay, same with NFL.
I do use my FM radio a lot durning baseball season on my phone...almost every other day...
This might make me hold on to my 7.8 device a little longer....as it will impact my baseball season big time...

Dyno App

I was just wondering if anyone has heard any more information on this app.
http://code.google.com/android/adc_gallery/app.html?id=11
It has been floating around for a couple of months now but i cant seem to find any more info on when this might come out.
It looks like a fun app to play around with and see how your car performs
I doubt it would be that accurate

Im not sure on the accelerometer & GPS v the iPhone but the iPhone does have a dyno app and i have seen video comparisons of their Dyno app v a dedicated unit and every time the app won out over the dedicated unit.
Im not saying that it will be exactly the same but to me its promising.

I retract my previous statement, but we'll c how it comes out, hopefully the same or better
might be waiting for paid apps. if this thing is as good as Dynolicious for the iphone then its definatly going to be worth paying for.
i agree, if this thing is as good as Dynolicious then i would definitely pay for it. Hope it wont be much longer now, as the market is accepting paid apps.
Thats awesome. Hope we have that soon.
just for reference, i have used a mobile dyno device a long time ago, and it was pretty accurate.
if you want spot on results go to a shop with a dyno.. but it gave a very good estimation for a 200$ device back in the day
it more of something fun to find out.
And if its as good as the iPhone version than it will be really accurate.
Plus i wouldnt even think about spending 200 on something like that, if i can get something for 10
You mean you got your phone for $10?

If you make a statement like this, then obviously you're not a car guy, not even with that screen name.
Yeah, it would be a "cool" app, but if someone was to quote me their engine power based on the reading from a phone (G1, iPhone or otherwise), I would laugh.
a nice dyno app would be better if you have fuel management hardware. there is a system called megasquirt which you can build the hardware from scratch and download their application to tune the engine. i think its open source so it should have the source code and it can possibly ported to the g1, im not an expert. just know how to use a dyno and an engine management system. just integrate an android device with megasquirt or aem, or greddy emanage it would be a nice combo. so there would be no need for a laptop. too bad im not a programmer.

Im just not a guy who wants to waste money. Going off the video i posted in this thread the iPhone version was more accurate.
so i wouldnt care if the dedicated unit was the same price id still go with the one that was more accurate.
If i can spend $10 on an app for my phone have it more accurate than a dedicated unit and easer to setup and use with multiple cars. I know which ones a winner for me

Problem is the HP data it displays is pretty much useless. Sure it can show you what your MAX HP is, but it won't show you Torque output and what's most important your power curves. Max power is useless unless you know WHERE your max power is in your RPM range. Dyno tuning is used for more then showing off big numbers, its used for tuning your engine where and when you want that power to come into play to suit your style of driving and the kind of racing you're doing. For engine tuning stick to a real dyno.
Now, as for the other data such as 0 - 60, braking, turning G's, etc etc. THAT data I find useful because combined with google maps of the track you can help yourself identify where you made mistakes and to better tune your suspension.
Ron,
Good point with using with on the track to find your weak spots.
I didnt even think of this.
To be honest i was thinking of it more of a toy to mess around with, with a few mates.

I wouldnt call it useless, obv if they want to tune their car, and/or want to know their curves theyd jus go dyno their car. The app is for the people who just want to know what the app tells u. Its not replacing an actual dyno

Oh that I know, but you know as well as I do that there will be some wannabe dyno-queen ricer that would think otherwise. I rather lay out reality on the table before anyone who doesn't know what they're doing comes back whining about how its such a horrible app because they blew their motor trying to net 300+ hp out of their poorly tuned honda while trying to get a base-line on some back road.

Wow, they finally got around to basic functionalities after three years. Functionalities that Symbian and WinMo were doing since forever. Very revolutionary and magical. Color me awed.
Just about the only thing Android needs to do to "catch up" is a better multi-tasking UI. Then again, considering the iPhone OS 4.0 will handle a grand total of seven tasks--as opposed to Android showing the last six apps used--well...

Nope, you're not. However for the masses, this update will be very well received. Yes its ridiculous that they took so long to incorporate multitasking and folder functionality, but better late than never.
I was disappointed that there wasn't any interface change, the icon grids seem archaic. The iBook app will be huge. Overall, I think this is what most people were expecting in terms of a software update. The real big news will be whether a hardware update will accompany OS4 (unibody iPhone would be nice).
For now the Nexus still has an edge but the gap is narrowing

Yeah. I was thinking of the big things they could do on the hardware side, but I'm not entirely sure they want to split their market up. People are still using the iPhone 3G, if they do a massive upgrade on hardware, app developers will have to verify it works on 3 different platforms.
Maybe they are just planning on phasing out the 3G completely by next year (considering they were hinting at the lesser features for 3G's OS4), and then using the current 3GS as minimum spec. If they increase screen resolution, they'll have to write some scaling processes as well (a lot can be seen in the iPad)
They dropped the bomb until they put this dud out.
I own a bunch of Apple devices and Ive had an iPhone before. Im not a hater, I just dont think it's cutting edge anymore. I even have an iPad so you can't say Im an apple hater
Is just another iPhone... but still Google needs to get their act together in a few areas. I borrowed a N1 for few days and like it very much, but I have been reluctant to take the plunge because of the following shortcomings:
Google needs to allow Contacts, Tasks and Notes to sync to the N1 (locally and remotely) using Google apps. It also needs to either enhance the Calendar application or make it play nice with Outlook desktop calendar functions. Me and whole bunch of other people I know, are very comfortable with Outlook to manage their email, time, contacts and tasks. Help us migrate to Android and to the Google apps without so much fuzz. Don't leave it to third parties. I don't want to risk my critical data to a vendor that is here today, but might not be here tomorrow. I'm not very happy leaving all my critical data in the cloud, but if I'm going to do it... Google needs to help me get there. Security and the integrity of my data are important. I have confidence in Google, but not on third party vendors for this critical step.
The Music Player needs enhancement and a Google desktop application to manage one's Music Library and multiple playlist is needed. Most decent portable DAP have such application. Maybe Google can partner or acquire a vendor that knows how to do this right.
Just like the new iPhone the inbox of Android needs to be bit more friendly with other email service providers. As with the new IPhone OS 4, multiple Exchange servers should be supported along with the option to have multiple and merged inboxes.
I wonder if others feel the same way. I also know that there are other issues that need to be addressed, but in my case the top two are very important.
The soul purpose of this device is not meant to be a music player, Google does not (and I highly doubt they will) need to create an entire desktop application to move mp3s to the music folder where anyone with the right direction can do this. Managing playlist though is a different story, but I guess it is up to a third party application to do this.
Get a ipod or other portable music device if this is your wish.
Also, tamanaco, I believe Sense does most of what you said. Don't believe the Nexus is a very friendly business device...

I agree with you in that there's no need for them to boost their specs at this point, but I was referring more to a cosmetic facelift. The iPhone has pretty much looked the same for 3 years now and I think even Apple fanboys can agree that everyone is tired of the design.

So, if I understand you correctly... The N1 is "not" a Music Player... is "not" meant for business... and as you say is "not" for me. So, in your book it's only good to make calls and find yourself on a map? It's called a "Superphone"... What's else is it good for?

This is not an excuse IMO, the music player definitely needs an update. This is the one area where iPhone has a real advantage over Android. Most users would rather carry one device for everyday use, I know I certainly would.

Does somebody know, is Nissan qashqai supported for android auto?
Things with Auto manufacturers are moving slowly.
In part because Android Auto still has too many bugs.
In part because manufacturers are trying to get Google and Apple to accept a portion of legal liability (as do other auto parts suppliers) when the lawsuits start flying, and both Google and Apple are refusing.
In part because software developers have a ship it today and fix it tomorrow attitude and auto mfrs want it as perfect as possible.
And likely many other reasons.
I tried android auto in a new Honda crv (I'm in UK) . I was pretty impressed actually. A little like using a really cheap android tablet though. It looked like it was running ice cream but maybe jelly b?
Skoda will be rolling this out in the next month on selected models. The only thing that I would like to know is if it will support lossless audio eg, flac.
I am a Skoda dealer we launching the New Superb with Android Auto next month and the New Fabia and Yeti have this on selected models. I'm driving a Yeti and the Mirror
link will be rolled out next week, just waiting for activation codes.
---------- Post added at 08:38 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:34 PM ----------
It's very difficult to find information on Android Auto or Mirrorlink for that matter the manufacturers are tight lipped but to be honest I know that many car distributors just haven't an idea
Mazda 3's are supposed to get it but there's no clear eta.
right now, the only car in the US that currently have AA as an option is the 2015 Hyundai Sonata, and you have to get the upgraded tech/navi package that gives you the 8inch screen in the dash. they just released the update to dealers a month ago and made the updater available online last week. Kia and Hyundai have verified that will both have multiple 2016 models that will come with AA, and there are rumors that honda/mazda/vw may have it next year. I've heard that Audi may be working on it also. as of right now, the only major manufacturers that have said that they aren't planning on going with AA are Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. A friend of mine has been working with the team that develops the Mercedes infotainment system and has said that the company really has no interest in going with AA, but may be going with CarPlay exclusively instead, in addition to doing massive overhauls on their own proprietary infotainment/logistics system. Toyota has been pretty quiet about their reasoning behind not wanting to go with AA or CarPlay, but have made statements that they dont plan on developing it any time soon, i would guess thats probably because of the same liability concerns that were mentioned in a previous post.
Ferarri or Lamborghini (can't remember which) does currently offer one model that has CarPlay, but not AA.

Toyota is supposed to be going with Ford's system: http://www.carscoops.com/2015/06/toyota-to-use-fords-infotainment-tech.html
I don't think liability is an issue stopping Toyota from doing AA or CarPlay.
Auto OEMs are worried their multi-thousand dollar profits from headunits will evaporate if Google and Apple take over the headunit, make it merely a "dumb display", and get all the car data "free".
So auto OEMs are getting together in various alliances for non-Google/Apple solutions, even though many will be supporting AA and CarPlay. This gives them options & negotiating power if Google/Apple get too nasty, same as with Samsung Tizen vs. Android. (And Tizen IVI is used for Auto Grade Linux too...)

I agree. People have been wanting more/better connectivity with their phones for years and much of the auto industry has pretty much failed miserably here. Now they have a pre-engineered alternative to give the customer what they've been asking for, but that is not really what many OEM's are interested in (surprise, surprise).
We'll just have to vote with our wallets. I for one will be curious to see, as Android Auto and Car Play progresses, how much weight the prospective auto buyer will give to these systems in their purchasing decision.

I think the first 3 months of WIDESPREAD availability of Android Auto and CarPlay will tell us how dominant the 2 will become over the car makers offerings. I think the 2 will rise (my bet) or fall together because little switching will happen: Android users = AA and iOS = CarPlay.
By "WIDESPREAD" I mean at least 20% of new cars sold, or whatever is needed to get a critical mass of buzz going in the major press. Maybe this will happen in the fall with some of the 2016 models.
The people who use smartphones for more than just calls: Google Maps/Nav, Music,... ARE demanding smartphone integration already. They are tired of bad UIs and expensive nav updates and bugs that never get fixed and want a similar experience to their smartphones, which they/we are pretty happy with compared to their car "apps"/UIs.
People with 5 year old cars don't want a car UI that was first designed 10+ years ago and never changes. Think about Android and even iOS UI from 5+ years ago.
So the smartphone generations WANT smartphone integration in some way. There seems to be plenty of press and opinion that AA and CarPlay are superior to automaker systems. (I won't say proprietary because AA & CP are prop too.) How many Internet articles can we find claiming auto OEM systems are better ?
So if AA & CP can be made to work without too many bugs and other frustrations, I don't see how they can lose, unless auto OEMs could turn "Silicon Valley" in their software development, which they haven't, much, after so many years.
And now Silicon Valley is hiring all the best and brightest minds they can from "Detroit" etc. and auto OEMs are scrambling. Heck, they are co-operating and even open sourcing now in a bid to not be turned into "dumb cars with dumb pipes and terminals".

so far, it's only on the 2015 sonata.. there has been talk about them retroactively offering the upgrade to other 2015 models after the 2016 models are available, but nothing guaranteed so far.. if your head unit runs on the AVN 4.0 or AVN 4.5 OS, then there may be hope, but otherwise, you're probably SOL, unfortunately.

Can a Chinese Android MTCB or MTCD be reliable with core features

The only features I really care about are AM/FM radio, Bluetooth phone, Bluetooth Audio streaming, and a working map system with reasonably good sound quality. I want it to be a system that looks like a factory install in my BMW e46 with working steering wheel controls. Really the rest of it is really just fluff to me.
Are either of the MTCB or MTCD units to the point that can be reliable?
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Mine is a Joying - MTCD - for a Jeep
AM/FM is normally something people have a problem with. I dont use that, so no biggie for me.
Bluetooth phone - fine for me, but it does route all the audio to one speaker, so it sounds a little weird, people say they hear me fine though. One annoying thing - the app takes over the screen while in use. So while you are on a call you cannot multi-task
Bluetooth Audio - works fine, steering wheel controls even work as intended. Interface is boring, but def works fine
Map system - I use Google Maps, so it works great, sometimes it lags, but that depends on what else I'm doing. I am going to try an actual navigation app with the GPS sd card adn see how that goes
Sound quality for me is vastly improved over stock. But stock was pretty much crap.
Mine is a Jeep specific unit, and it looks factory. Everyone who has seen it thought it was the factory until I started it up. One guy thought I just tweaked the factory radio, didn't realize it was an entirely different unit.
Let me ask this, what do you listen to via Bluetooth Audio?

I have all my music on the phone, mostly ripped from my old CDs. I rarely stream, and when I do, its a local radio station when I am traveling (using TuneIn).

Well you could just use the A2DP app to stream Bluetooth audio and should have full use of your Steering wheel controls.

You made the right choice. I also have an E46 and installed a MTCB unit approx a year ago and it works well. I have issue with FM but that was a problem with the original BMW Headunit too so suspect my issue is with the antenna or antenna amp. Bluetooth music streaming works well and phone hands free works fine if you install an external mic. The only downside with these units is the memory size. It's partitioned and on the MTCB units, there is only 1GB reserved for apps and 12GB wasted as storage (which hardly any apps can use). I think this has improved on MTCB (2GB instead of 1GB) but you may need to be selective on what apps you install. Let me know if you have any issues and I'll share my experience with you... welcome to the club!!!
So, unlike the Gen1 Kindle Fire, I'm guessing one can't get into the guts and repartition for more app space?
I'm still trying to figure out what 2Din HU to put in my '04 Ram. This side of the fence is more confusing that the phone sections and it's frustrating that a 2Din box has fewer features and less power than a phablet.

it really takes a lot of searching. Read all you can about what you are looking for here on XDA, try to search for it on Reddit, and even look at the resellers forum like Joying or AutoPumpkin or RoadNavi.com
First decide if you want a Universal unit or a unit specific for your car.
I drive a Jeep Wrangler, and it is not a true Double Din, so I wanted the easiest install as possible. So I chose a Jeep specific unit. That lowers the number of options. Then for my year and model, that limited it down to about RoadNavi.com, Joying, Owince, or AutoPumpkin.
I liked Eonon, but they said they couldn't verify if it would work for my model year, 2016.
So I read a ton on here and their forums, and it seemed like people had more problems with Auto Pumpkin and Owince than they did with RoadNavi or Joying.
Seems like Joying has the most users on here and various forums. So I looked into them heavily. And they were on Amazon, and it was Prime, so I figured if something went wrong, Amazon would help me out.
And even then, it is kind of a crap shoot. I have a 2016 Jeep Wrangler, I got a MTCD Android 5.1 Joying for Jeep, works perfect, couldn't be happier.
my brother in law got the exact same unit, for his 2016 Jeep Wrangler. Except he has the Premium audio package. His we can't get to work right yet.
And know what you want out of it. About 90% of the time, all I use is Spotify and some type of GPS. I switch between Google Maps, Waze, Here WeGo, and iGo. so for me, it is perfect. If you want to use 20 different apps and add ons, things might not go so smoothly.

I tend to try to run things past their mfgr's intended limits; modify them if I can or need to. Right now I'm sick of the not-quite-2DIN stock unit. Yes, I have the "premium" infinity audio. Been reading on that and don't want to rip it all out in favor of amps and such that I don't have room for, but in the same sentence will I be able to hook up the droid to the existing hardware. My P.E. skills may not be up to the task as what I think should work is not always the way things go. It seems easy looking at the wiring charts in the truck manual. Getting the output levels of the HU to match what the factory amp expects could be a challenge.
I guess what I really want from it is: Navigation (Waze), Pandora, AM/FM (AM not critical but would like it), VLC/MX Player, external USB storage, custom ROM, tether to hotspot or phone is a must. It's unlikely I'll try to do email or social media on it. Would love to have a 10" model, but my dash has a 'visor' above half the radio cutout that would probably interfere so I'm looking into 7" universal double DIN units.

Well good news is, based on my multiple posts on Jeep Forum, it looks like if you get the Joying Jeep unit and use the side marked "AMP"

That "AMP" side did not work with the premium Alpine system, but multiple people onJeepForum.com said it works perfectly with the Infiniti system.
I did eventually get it to work with the Alpine system, but I had to use a Joying universal harness and a PAC module and splice them together
Now if you wanted a 7 inch or 10 inch system they would probably work the same way. Just get the universal Joying harness that should come with the 7 inch or 10.1 inch. Then get a PAC or iDataLink or whatever and splice as needed
That is more labor intensive of course. If you can live with the smaller screen of the Jeep specific unit, it should be just plug and play.
And I use Waze and my phones Hotspot all the time
Also Pandora

Best 1 DIN device.

Can someone recommend a good device for a vehicle with 1 DIN?
Preferably the display that comes out should remain vertical and should not tilt back because the car's plastics overhang the 1 DIN frame/area
Thank you in advance for your time/expertise.

I recently got the pioneer AVH-Z7100DAB as i wanted one from pioneer for the nice sound they give and it was the only one i could find from pioneer with big screen & android auto that is 1din. My previous was the older pioneer AVH-5200BT which had no android auto has the same 1din big screen that comes out of the radio and i was very satisfied with the quality so i am pretty confident this upgrade with android (and mirrorlink, carstream,..) will do the same good job
(edit : yes, you can select for it to stay vertical or tilt it or also move a little further from the backside)

Sounds perfect! Unfortunately it's very pricey. I really appreciate the advice but I should have added "at reasonable price"!

I only need maze or google navigation (GPS), DAB radio, Bluetooth to stream music from my phone, phone support (make/receive calls + phone contracts display), android apps compatible.
The sound quality and sound power are not priority as I almost never listen to music.

Sounds like you're in the wrong forum. This one is for Android Auto headunits. You might want to check other forums for info on the cheap Chinese units which run the Android OS.
No, I think that I'm in the correct forum, unless there is a price discrimination of which I'm not aware.
I need something exacting like the Pioneer device, just cheaper. It's not about functions, as much as about price.

Have you tried looking through those on Aliexpress? Just try search for 1 DIN Android and see if you can find one that as a minimum of 2GB RAM (NOT ROM, Memory or whatever they call it sometimes)

Thank you for the advice that I appreciate. I will research for 2GB RAM or more. That's a good tip.
Are there other characteristics that I should look for?
Anyway, I searched and found some older, used, Pioneer units on eBay but I'm a bit hesitant regarding second hand electronics. If I buy new items on Amazon, then I'm protected against junk or non working units. I sent back a dashcam after 7 months and got a full refund as, apparently, others were experiencing troubles.
... I cannot believe that anything less than that Pioneer is simply junk.
Sent from my MHA-L29 using Tapatalk
I personally would only look for at least 2GB RAM, nothing else. Oh and capacitive screen, not resistive like that Pioneer mentioned earlier.
You are protected on eBay as a buyer, but if the item matches description, there will not be much you can do.
I would try buy new from Aliexpress rather than used from somewhere else, but it's just me. You have buyer proitection on Aliexpress and possible refunds (partial or total) if something is not right. Buyer is not paid until you click confirm after you received the item and it is working.
Thanks again for the additional advice. I did not know that Aliexpress offered protection and later I will look into Aliexpress too. For now I found these:

What is the difference?

The common Chinese units run Android, you install apps on the head unit, and it needs to connect to a hotspot on the phone to get Internet access and be useful. Android Auto units basically provides a display and touchscreen for the phone to use, and gives you a simplified interface for apps installed on the phone which are written to use it. They're very different things.

Hi Mike,
Apologies for contradicting you but I have a rear view mirror dashcam, of Chinese manufacture, that does not need a hot spot from my phone as it has a 4G SIM card slot and does all that you describe for the Android Auto units, word by word. Plus it has a reversing camera, google maps, make phone calls, accesses internet and lots more, independently of my phone.
It cost me only 135€.
So I ask once again, where is the difference?
