As the title says, whenever an app requests root permission, a reboot occurs. Any ideas? Running an older (6 months old) version of CM9. I really would like to backup my data before re-installing a new version. Any ideas?
Thanks!

I'd try 2 things.
1. Do a nandroid backup and dirty-flash the newest CM9.
2. Do a nandroid backup and extract your apps and data from it with Titanium Backup.

I can't use Titanium Backup, when it load it requests root permissions and reboots. I'll try the nandroid and dirty flash later. Any other ideas?

Edit: I think I misread that, Titanium Backup can extract apps and data from a nandroid backup?

Look here: http://www.guidingtech.com/13501/restore-apps-nandroid-titanium-backup/. I'm not sure if it's a paid feature, since I've never used the free version.

It freezes like that, but I haven't used WebOS in ages and am not sure what exactly you are doing in the video when i reboots. But yes, it freezes for a brief second, and then reboots immediately.

Just wanted to say a dirty flash of the latest nightly fixed the issue.
Thanks!

Running CM7RC
Decided to try one of the themes so I did a backup first using ROM Manager.
Didn't like the themes so I tried to restore.
It is coming up without my google account and there is no option to add it in the account settings.
I've wiped and reapplied the backup and also fixed permissions to no avail so far.
I'm finishing a 2nd fix permissions after wiping everything (even Davlik).
Has anyone ever had this happen to them? If so, what was the fix?
I'd rather get it restored than start over...
Restoring the account settings in Titanium doesn't help either.
I'm screwed, aren't I?
Do you have the Google apps installed (market, etc)?

Yes, happened to me many times when I flashed CM and forgot to flash gapps.
Download gapps-gb-20110120-signed.zip from here: http://goo-inside.me/google-apps/ and flash from recovery.
Did you use clockworkmod 3.0? It's been known to messed things up during nandroid restore.
Flash GAPPS like other have mentioned.
If not full wipe and start over, use AMon Ra or an older CWM version

Yeah, they were there when I restored the backup but they wouldn't open because there was no google account in the phone. Could flashing gapps fix this?

Yes, it is cwm 3.0
For now I've done a full wipe and started over and after a couple of days of tweaking I'll likely forget the incident. I might try restoring and flashing gapps but I have my doubts as to whether that would work.
I'm going to have to start being more vigilant about backing up apps/settings/data in other ways if a nandroid backup isn't dependable...
Thanks for the comments.
OK, I just flashed RC2 and the account issue popped back up so it isn't necessarily that backup I did before.

For sure from now on.
I've got a clean install that I'm having issues with now...
Strange things are afoot.
Yesterday, I tried to change ROM (to check it out) so before this I did a backup in CWM.
What a surprise when CWM didnt restore this backup. I was looking through the internet for solution and I found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15431672&postcount=24
I have same problem as in first post of this thrade (when restoring data, the whole process is stopped) but this solution seems to be for HTC Desire. What could I do if I want data back?
Please help me.
r u using same version of CWM to backup and restore?
new version not backward compatible with an older version backup
Yes, it is the same version

No no, i didnt change anything. The problem is described in that link, it seems that some versions of cwm have problem with restore and have to be fixed than the restore should work. But I dont know how to fix it.
Just simply update CWM to a newer version before restoring the backup.
I pushed the commit long time ago so any "recent" cwm (5.x) will solve the problem.
Hope this helps
Thanks a lot LinoX, but there is only CWM v4.0.1.5 for x8 on XDA.
Is it useful (should I try it?) or do I need newer version? (as you wrote 5.x.x)

if it is an unmodified build (from source) then yes (sometimes there're custom modified builds to add functions. Those recoveries can be problematic because they break more than they fix. Recoveries are really important and you should install only "trusted" ones.)
Try with this one and let us know if it suffices (I'm sure 5.x has the fix, I'm not sure if 4.x had it too...but you shouldn't do any damage..at most it will halt again when restoring)
It seems to work but after first restore there were many apps not be restored, so i did another one. It is better now but still there are about 5 apps not restored plus stock Internet browser (dont know if some other system apps too).
I think it is strange that after every restore there is not same result and not what was backuped at all.
Where could be a problem and is it worth to try restore until everything is restored?
It is true that backup was created by cwm3.2(seems ported from x10mini) included in gingerdx rom i use.

There was a problem with my SD recently. I couldnt copy one file from sd to pc. And antutu benchmark always crashes when testing card reading.
Damaged sd may causes problems with restore i mean.

The last thing i'd like to ask.
Is there any tool with i could extract certain apps from the backup?

what is the latest cmw version for x8? v4?
thanks b4
I found as a zip file only v4.
But there is v5 in custom kernels included.

Hi, I have a nandroidbackup made using CWM 5.0.2.7. And I want to restore it. Now I have CyanogenMod7 and I have Clockworkmod 5.0.0.6.
So I copied the nandroidbackup from external_sd to internal_sd, and now when it shows up in my restore menu.
Is there any problem that the backup was made with Clockworkmod 5.0.2.7 and I restore it with Clockworkmod 5.0.2.6 ?
I hate it when all apps are removed to change ROM. I want to try Nik's JB and I dont want apps to be removed whatsapp....
try Ultimate Backup Tool for non-rooted and Titanium Backup for rooted
In this case it should be enough to do a nandroid backup. You can test JB and if you finished testing, you just restore your old stuff. The JB ROM is amazing but it's not a daily driver yet so it's kinda needless to install all your apps on it
I backed some using titanium but how how to restore them?
What about the backup and and restore on the recovery? What is that used for?

After backing up with titanium on your old rom
Download titanium on your new rom and you can re-install, but beware that restoring data from different roms may cause FC's
Can you set Titanium to only restore the apks, no data and cache? That should avoid most issues I suppose?
The interface is a little ... busy... so I havent really given it a go yet.

Buy the premium version of titanium backup then you can batch install apps instead of installing one at a time.

Yep. What I usually do, is go on the batch section click restore app, and choose app only. And then use app+data for my games, so I don't lose my scores and saves.
You could always restore the data partition from your old ROMs nandroid backup. Works for me.
For rooted phone, I'd suggest Go Backup.
Titanium Backup is much more powerful, but some essential features, like batch backup/restore, require paid version. And it loads pretty slowly on my Incredible S.
Go Backup offers backing up both apps and their data, as well as SMS/call log/contacts/wi-fi access points. Go dev team has recently added backup merging feature, which works fine either.
Today I installed 4.1.1-based ROM from Nikhil, downloaded Go Backup from the Market, ran backup restoration and voila, in 5 minutes I got all my apps back, including paid ones.
This app is constantly being updated, which is also a weighty argument (at least for me).

So if I restore my ROM from a previous backup, it will restore all my apps with data too?

Thanks for the info, when Nicks new roms settle in a bit and I try them again I'm going to try your method.

Is it really the same restoring an app from a backup as from Google play? Market links work and the app is registered by the os, integrated into the share menu (facebook for instance) and so on?
Just trying to learn how android works... Something like that would never work in windows, registry entries would probably break...
Nonverbose can you please explain more about the nandroid backup. I tried titanium and it worked.
I am curious about your method.
Best

nandroid is the backup/restore function in you recovery A nandroid backup will save your COMPLETE ROM with all apps, data and everything else. After a backup you can install whatever you want on your phone and install new things, whatever. And if you had enough, you can restore your backup and your entire phone will be just like when you did the backup It's also a great method to switch between ROMs for example your daily driver (let's say ProjectX) and JB Evolution You can configure both ROMs like you want it, do backups and switch between them The process of backing up/restoring a ROM takes about 5min.
I hope this answered all your questions
Yup I tried this one today but I didnt know it was called nandroid. Thanks

It's an incremental backup. After the first backup with CWM only the stuff that actually got changed since the first backup will get backuped again.
Neat huh?

yes, but i did a clean install, or what u would call it and the first folder, i made was like that.
but now after the newest update my phone won't sleep or go out when i push the power bottom it keeps waking up >.<
I can install Ultimate JB XXLSA v5 without any problem, go through the setup, connect to Wi-Fi etc. but as soon as I install any apps, or restore an app from a Nandroid backup, the phone won't re-boot again. It always hangs at the initial Samsung Galaxy Note banner screen.
There seems to be many posts reporting similar behaviour but not, as far as I can see, where the problem only arises after installing an app.
I am making sure to wipe Cache, Data, Dalvik Cache and all that first but the result is always the same. I was looking forward to XXLSA but this driving me crazy. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Did u make a claen install(with all wipes)

Are you restoring apps only ? or are you restoring system data too ?
Try to install app only (No app data) incase theres a roque app causing it, Or try to install your apps 1 by 1 until the problem occurs, I know its a PITA but it will identify the culprit.
You were right! Mystery solved - well partly. Turns out Titanium Backup Pro was causing it on my phone for some reason. This was naturally the first app I wanted to install so I could restore apps one by one from the Nandroid backup. I tried Quickboot too which also caused the same problem so because TB and then QB did the same thing I assumed every app was going to cause trouble. Shouldn't jump to conclusions, I know.
I have JB Ultimate XXSLA v5 installed and am restoring my apps one at a time from Google Play and making new Nandroid backups as I go along.
And now I just tried installing TB free version - the phone boots normally! Then I installed the TB Pro version and again the phone boots normally. When TB was the first app I installed after the ROM upgrade it hung up the phone every time on 6 attempts. I'll try re-installing Quickboot now and see what happens. Conclusion: I must have been doing something in the wrong sequence but can's see what.
Many thanks for your help.
