My speaker would do a popping sound every so often, but this isn't the problem.
Recently I have noticed that the device does not output sound all of the time. My alarm didn't go off today, even though the alarm app was working perfectly. When I click preview on alarm app, sometimes it makes sound, sometimes not. The keyboard is not currently making sound., even though its in settings. When watching a flash video on the net the sound would cut off randomly.
The sound sounds fine when it does make sound, so I doubt that that is the problem.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?
Sounds like a hardware issue to me especially with the popping sound. If you are still within your time I would exchange it.

I'm not really worried about exchanging. Amazon is very easy about its exchange policy, at least with the original kindle fire. You have a one year warranty.
The 30 day window is for refunds.
It probably is a hardware problem. I noticed that the speakers were popping more frequency. I have seen other people complain about the speaker popping issue as well. I was curious if any other people are experiencing similar problems.
I too have the "popping" sound when I slide the locker tab.
Just for informational purposes, I do not have any popping sound.
You're right Amazon is pretty good about returns.

I have the same problem, speakers don't work at all while headset works fine. I noticed that when I disconnect the headset there's a popping sound.
Talked to AMZ customer support, they are aware of the issue and asked to wait a few more days until a SW update is available!
I'll wait and see, if the new SW doesn't fix it i will ask for a replacement.

I'm on my second tilt. I returned the first one because it was impossible for me to carry on a conversation on the railroad to and from work (or in other mildly noisy situations). While I have no issues hearing the person on the other end, my voice cuts in and out to such an extent that I cannot carry on a conversation. This occurs in the morning on relatively empty trains and in the evening on crowded trains.
There is another thread in which most people have been complaining about the quality on the other end when using the speakerphone, but some had a problem similar to mine as well. AT&T claims that this has not yet been identified as a widespread issue with the device, but before I really raise a stink with them, I wanted to find out if this was really a widespread issue or not.
If this is to ultimately be useful to others, I guess it makes sense to identify which version of the Kaiser you are using.
Thanks.
Turn on Automatic Gain Control
Start / Settings / System / Microphone AGC
"Enable"
*really* helps voice quality a lot.

One of the main reasons i upgraded to the tilt (it was a huge upgrade, basic phone to a all-in-one phone) was because my phone calls dropped all the time. I thought it was because of the phone (it was old, been dropped ALOT), but I'm beginning to wonder. when talking on the tilt the other day, the other person complained that i was dropping in and out. i was pacing on the upstairs of the house, and kept passing TVs, computers and their moniters and past the wireless router, so it could be that, but, again, i don't know for sure.
That's funny, in the other thread people were saying to turn it off. It is off by default on the tilt so I never bothered to turn it on (yes, I'm a noob...). I'll give it a try...thanks!

Yes, it's a curious thing the AGC. In a way it would be helpful to have a hard key for it because how well or badly it works depends on the background noise level. So in some situations you might want it off and even in the same conversation you might want it on. Also it's behaviour is affected by whether you are on speaker phone where volume level and feedback become issues. (Not the easiest thing to test out either!)
Mike
Weird, I have it both with or without the speaker.
HTC contacted me today, saying that the problem is now known with them, so they are searching for a solution.

It does help, but only slightly when calling on my device.
It seems to help on my tilt as well, but I really haven't had much of a chance to test it out. I will say that, however small the sample size (and assuming it is random), it is somewhat comforting that most respondants have not had any problems at all. Maybe ours are just from a bad batch. I'm going to try calling AT&T to see if they'll swap mine out again.
I just got off the phone with HTC support again (here in Belgium). He URGED me that everybody that has the problem would report it: the more requests on the problem they receive, the faster they will start developing a fix.
So everybody, start calling HTC support and ask they make a ticket for it!

i hope they can make a fix... common htc how come thei never faced this problem on their test .. cant believe it!
My 2 cents on AGC, auto-gain automatically turns up the mic volume to capture "light" low volume sounds. It would really help capture a wispering speaker in a quiet room. On a loud train it should automatically turn it's gain down because of the loud ambient noise and I would expect the speakers voice to be harder to hear by the other party.
In a loud place I'd say turn it off, but as always, your own trials will tell what's best for you.

Calling HTC
I called HTC America (HTC India is more like it) to report the issue. They were very thankful and apologetic and mentioned the possibility of getting a new device. He said he was going to dispatch an e-mail about the issue to HQ immediately and that they would be sitting down with AT&T in the near future (as they do 30 days after a new phone is released with a given carrier) and would do his best to make sure the issue is addressed at that time.
Here's hoping...

I've reported the issue to the HTC authorised service center close to 2 weeks ago. When I called up the service center, their reply is : no response from the HTC Taiwan yet..... What a surprising innocent reply from them!!!! As if they have never got any feedback on such issue before!
Hi
I wonder if the problem is caused by excessive volume of the in built earpiece? Do you have this up on maximum or high?
The inbuilt earpiece goes very loud and so the sound would easily be picked up by the microphone causing it to behave similar to when you have it on speaker phone as it tries to stop feedback and echo.
There isn't a lot that can be done about this apart from turning down the earpiece volume or using a wired headphones with mic. It may be worth turning down your volume on the earpiece to see if it improves.
Regards
Phil
Does anyone else have a slight crackle noticeable at high volume while playing songs or loud noises? Its a slight crackle and you can tell the sound is not as pure as it should be. Put a song on YouTube full blast and see if you can notice any little crackle, you might notice sound is not butter smooth....
I have a crackle on the bottom speaker with the stock ringtone. i posted about it on here, but noone responded
I have the same issue with the volume is all the way up. But if I lower the volume a little it's good. This phone is crazy loud

If it does it will just limit the max volume.
Yea it sounds like a software blip actually. The sound isnt like a rattle from an unseated or blown speaker its strange. I wonder why no one else hasnt brought this up...
I had issues the first day but none recently... Maybe they just need to break in
Yea if i blownin the top speaker while its playing it crackles loke crazy. Not that you shoukd do that. I did very lightly. The bottom speaker does not. Might have to rma.
Happens in top speaker for me as well. I notice it particularly well with the second half of the ringtone/notification sound, "Ganymede." Should we ask for a replacement?

This has to be an audio bug. I have also noticed it on my ATT Model. I have also noticed that the ringer volume drops dramatically when receiving calls. It is also hard to hear the person on the other unless the phone is held close to the ear.
Been having the same issue. It seems to mainly happen at the beginning of some notification sounds, almost like it has trouble initializing the sound on command.
I noticed this when I was playing a game, after muting all sounds, it sounds like the speaker is still active and produces noise. Its more of a hum than a crackle, for me at least. I I'm pretty sure its a software issue and not a hardware.

With regards to the popping/crackling/buzzing that I posted earlier in this thread (I think on the last page to be exact; also this may be different from what you're describing), I have confirmed via a replacement device that I just received today that it was a hardware defect, NOT a software defect. There is no popping/crackling/buzzing or anything like that with the new one, and I even held them side by side and did a comparison for another person just to make sure I'm not crazy haha (though it was pretty apparent when the new one didn't exhibit the problem I was hearing with the first one). On a side note, the screen on the new one looks like it has better whites (I didn't have a problem with the other screen, and it looked just fine to me, but side by side you can see a difference and I guess I got a two for one on this by doing the exchange!)
And finally, I didn't have to update the replacement out of the box like I did the first phone, which means they're now shipping phones that already have the latest update applied to them. Just thought I'd check back to let you all know that if you do have this issue, you SHOULD RMA/exchange it for a new one, because it is NOT a software glitch if you have the same issues that I described previously.
Hope this helps =]

Yes it does help, thanks! Im going to rma mine monday and post back with my results also.
I first noticed a problem with my speakers when I made my first call. My nexus 5 always had great call quality but my friend sounded so hollow and not at all as clear as on the 5.
Then I tried sounds, music. It definitely has a noticeable 'peak' and high and low notes flatten and rattle. Is this what you all are experiencing?

Anyone noticing issues with WhatsApp? I can't seem to hear the conversation tone while I'm chatting. The notification rings just fine, it's just the conversation tone. I've factory reset, but made no difference. Any help will be appreciated.
hey all, i definitely have crackle on the bottom speaker. i do not have any issues with the top. I hear it with notifications as well as music. Here is a good test YouTube video that i am using to see if anyone can compare. I have to hit the vol rocker down 7 times from full volume to get crackling to go away.
I've contacted Google (i purchased through Google Play Store) and they are shipping out a replacement saying this should not happen.
Here are the steps they had me take to test the device.
1) make sure Bluetooth was off
2) check the volume settings for all types of notifications (ringtone, alerts, alarm...)
3) reboot into safe mode and see if it still persists
---> to boot into safe mode, hold the power button like u are going to turn the phone off, when the "Power off" option pops up on screen, long press it and it will ask if you;d like to boot into safe mode. THIS ONLY LETS STOCK APPS TO RUN, thats why i used youtube for the example.
4) factory reset(they asked how i did it, i did it normally through the system settings)
After this, the rep explained that this was the first time she heard of the issue and the replacement device shouldn't have any speaker issues.
I also asked if it will be a new device and she said yes, no refurbishes. If the issue happens again, she mentioned to call back in and they will replace it no problem. Hopefully this first replacement won't have the same problem, but i love the phone so much that im willing to have them ship multiple out until i get a good one.
hope this helps!!
EDIT: forgot to mention, they put a hold on your credit card for up to 7 days until they receive the device back. You SHOULD choose next day shipping as that will be part of the hold and your card will NOT get charged for any extra shipping charges.
Wish me luck!!!
here is a quick youtube video i made comparing a faulty device and a working device
pay attention to the "dings" in the beginning of each part of the video, you may have to watch it a couple times to hear the difference - to me its noticeable right away. The first 3-4 seconds of the video sounds fuzzy/crackly... The same "dings" around 7 seconds are not fuzzy or crackly at all.... there you have it folks, Hardware defect!
Same issue here
Tried factory reset etc, still same volume lowering amd crackling

I definitely think the crackling is a software but and not a speaker hardware problem. I have the same issue, but it's only intermitten. And there are two or three other threads on here about people with crackling issues with lots of replies. I am hoping a fix may come down the road.

there was another thread on this i replied to, but someone mentioned they had the same issue. some people have it with the top speaker, some with the bottom. I get crackling in the bottom speaker... In order to not hear crackling, i have to press the volume rocker down 7 times which is insane.
i contacted Google via Google Play store and they are shipping out a replacement after some initial troubleshooting. The rep i spoke with advised it's not normal for crackling and it was the first she had heard of the issue.
One of the forum members in the other thread mentioned they got their replacement and compared the two side to side with someone else in the room just so he knew he wasn't going crazy. The replacement was 100% working, no crackle. Also he advised the new device shipped with the latest firmware on it so it would seem new batches are getting shipped...
ill be receiving my replacement monday and ill try to come back and post results.

Yep same here. I've got my sms tone set to "Elara", and sometimes it starts ok and then gets severely garbled. It's almost as if some other background process is interfering with it. In fact I wouldn't mind betting that's what it is. Also sometimes when I send a viber or a fb messenger message it misses the first half of the sound it makes when you hit send.
Definitely something not right with it, and I agree, for a brand new 500 quid handset it's not on.
I am having the static/crackle issue with my calendar notification (doesn't always happen and I can reliably play the notification through the menu). I have posted a video of it on YouTube. This doesn't seem to be a hardware issue to me as it plays fine other teams and other audio (such as watching music videos) seems to play without fault.
Am not permitted to post links, but here it is with a minor edit.

I have already returned one phone and I still have the exact same issue with "new" phone. Even after the 5.1 update.
Intermittent crackling/garbling/static and occasional popping of some but not all notification sounds. I can not predict when it will happen at all.

I upgraded from a Nexus 5 and am now a proud owner of a Nexus 6. The issue I'm having is that occasionally the haptic feedback on my phone will have weird clicking noises as i'm typing. I have read MANY people having this issue, but i'm not sure if I should get this swapped out or not? Any advice would be appreciated, other than the annoying random clicking of the vibrating motor (which isnt an OS sound nor the camera lens), my device seems flawless. I have heard people swapping them out and getting screens that are tinted yellow/pink though.
P.S. I also have a weird noise when my Nexus 6 starts wirelessly charging.....you hear the sound from the speaker and then the vibration motor makes a hissing noise.....anyone else have that?

Dude I have the same "issue" with the hepatic feedback. Some say it's a manufacture tolerance, some it is de IS of the camera moving by the vibration motor, some that it is the speakers. I really don't know what to think now and I am starting to get used to . I am afraid of replacing it because another manufacture problem could appear.
Because my unit beside this, again, "issue" it's flawless like yours.

Definitively a manufacturing tolerance issue or design one.
Hi,
I bought a new N7+. But I noticed that whenever I plug my headphones, the music starts playing through the speaker instead of the heaphones. I tried with various headphones that I have. Has this happened to others too? Is there a fix for it? Do you think this is hardware issue or software bug?
Have returned the phone in warranty and awaiting a new one.
Please do let me know.
Same issue. But it happened only after the May update. The issue goes away if you reboot the phone with the headset plugged in.

I'm not sure about Android P, but this is most certainly a software issue. It only started after I applied the May security patch.
Haven't had time to escalate this to Nokia yet, but when I do I'll updated here what they had to say.

Do you think this is happening to many other users too? Because I didn't find any thread related to this so thought it's only me & a faulty piece.
This is quite a serious bug if software related and if it's been 3 months already, surprising that no one's talking about it. the 3.5mm jack is one of the most important reasons why I went for this & didn't wait for the MI A2.
I think the only reason this isn't a big deal is because the issue is random. It happens to me once in 2-3 days.
Strangely enough, today it happened while I was connected to my car via Bluetooth. The audio was playing on the phone's speakers. But a re-start fixed it.
Yeah same thing happening to me also is there any solution?

On the 1st day that I got the phone it happened to me 4 times in 24 hours. But I guess it's because I am always on my headphones throughout the day.
I can't keep restarting the phone every single time it happens.
Same goes for bluetooth. I have to lower the volume every time I start the music because sometimes it just does not route the audio to the headset. Had a couple of embarassing moments in the office... Also noticed that if I watch a movie and switch between apps back and forth, when I resume the playback the phone starts to play the audio on both the phone and on the headset for a couple of seconds, also very anoying..
