CM10 SS3 issues and solving - Motorola Droid 3

CM10 SS3
I have not enough posts to post in developer`s topic that`s why I`m posting here.
If you can not connect to USB storage, use Multimount, or any same program it shows errors but helps.
GPS works fine on my droid 3, using Navitel software instead of google.
But there is not GSM or 3G gata, and I cann`t use phone.
also I found some bug in internal SD File system - it could not show any non English symbols in file names.
I got up to 180 MB RAM (even more then on GB)!:good:

Generaly, I think GSM have to work, but I`ve make something wrong till I tried to unable it.

Do you have an 860 or 862 on the 883 radio? Try unchecking the Verizon boxes.
Sent from my XT862 using xda app-developers app

Im using droid 3, it`s 862...

For your lack of 3G data this worked for me:
Be warned however I am in New Zealand on Vodafone NZ so may not apply given it is not Verizon US...
On latest 20121018 build of CM10 from HashofCode this works 100% for me...
First start up my APN was set to Verizon and I could not remove it or add another..
Second change - System Settings - More, in here is tick boxes for "Enable alt OEM telephony code" and "Enabled alternate getIMSI code"
For me those two were ticked/enabled, the lower two were not.
I unticked those, rebooted and all is working on 3G and data! the APNs set themselves correctly to Vodafone NZ etc.
May be play around with those for yourself to see if it helps, note I suspect a reboot required after changing ?
Good luck

Thanks, GSM Internet and mobile communication works fine.
Also I checked Google maps - works great!

Awesome
no problem at all, HashofCode is the man to really thank for creating such ROMs for us

Only one issue left to be not solved - Understanding non Latin symbols by file system.:good:
and camera of course.

[Q] T-Mobile Redirect with HD7 sim

Just bought a galaxy tab (tmobile version). Popped in my SIM from my HD7 and it worked for internet flawlessly over 3G connection. Double checked - WIFI was disabled Then I called tmobile and they said I see you have a galaxy tab. I said no I have HD7...I had put the sim back in HD7.
Bad news is now when I put the sim in the TAB I get redirect to tmobile homepage everytime. Did I screw myself by calling tmobile? Anyway to get my unlimitd data HD7 sim to work in my galaxy tab without flashing firmware?
Change your IMEI. Here's the process I followed (i think-- might need to do a bit of searching to be sure)
Make sure your tab is rooted.
DL Root explorer.
mount R/W
BACKUP your efs folder and put it somewhere safe (this is all your IMEI info if I'm not mistaken)
delete the CONTENTS of your efs folder
mount r/o.
restart.
Of course this is illegal depending on where you live, it makes your tab show up as a generic GSM phone.
Translate IMEI Change Instructions
Could you please explain further. For example, I am unsure what MOUNT R/W means etc. Please define abbreviations. Your effort will be appreciated.

These are modes you put the file explorer into. Mount R/W means you can change the files/folders of your sd card. It means read/write. R/O means read only.
What about Samsung Vibrant?
Just wandering if the same process will work with Samsung Vibrant so it can be used with old web unlimited plan.
Anybody tried it?

A warning, this thread will be deleted by the moderators due to forum rules violation regarding imei changes. It has happened once before, just wanted to give you a heads up.
And this tip does actually work.

Very interesting. It shouldn't affect the radio. Any possibility there was a location or weather issue when you tried the trick?
Most likely you are surfing under edge. Switch to a 3G modem should solve the problem

It's under exactly same location and 3g only mode, and I had MT4 along with it. I found the 3g signal is
about 10 dB less than MT4 when used the trick when the level is about the same if I revert it back. I think there's something can be done with nv_data files.
There are many 3g modems to try. Any vibrant 2.2 modem will work. Just flash the modem.bin in the phone place in Odin 1.7. You will have to verify your apn and wireless network settings after you flash. Try until you get one that works best for you.
The Vibrant modems are in that phone's development forum in a single thread.
I have successfully flashed a new kernel as well as a new rom (MoDaCo kernal with Overcome rom) in an attempt to turn my tab into a permanent phone on the TMOUSA network. (I'm fine with 2g + voice w/wifi at the moment)
I get the typical redirect (to tmobile) when using the 2g + Voice switch and have attempted to take the steps listed in this post to allow access. However, when I remove the contents of the efs folder and reboot the device, it still redirects.
Looking through the explorer I realize that the efs folder has repopulated, but the imei folder is empty. This doesn't seem abnormal, but without an imei within the folder, how am I still getting the redirect? Is it the kernel or the rom?
I've tried searching for other posts containing this problem, but don't come across any others that are helpful, mainly just "OMG *insert flaming here* I've seen this 100 times check the search option"

I didn't have a problem when i did the step when it first came out before the original thread was deleted. It is very strange that it is not working for you.Dumb question but does your SIM have voice+data on it? I am currently using my Vibrant SIM, just wondering.
Actually, I got it to work finally after switching the modem back to 3g than 2g. Seems ok now.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
You always have to check your wireless network settings when you set this up. You know, apn, mode, etc.
If I try this trick and it fails, can I go back to the original settings? I am such a coward when it comes to this stuff. I actually don't "NEED" the voice activated. I just WANT IT because it is there .. know what I mean ? Sort of like voice on my HTC Shift - I don't think I have EVER used it .. Maybe I will just leave it .. I have the Streak 7 also.
i tried the trick and works perfectly, thanks for sharing it, i was gonna try this trick on my G2 but i sold it to buy the tab, i'm happy with what i have now.

Have you noticed a weaker 3G reception?
I've tried this on my Samsung Vibrant and it seems to have worse 3G reception
(can only get reliable 3G outside of a building structure)
Why in the world would you do this to any other device besides the t-mobile galaxy tab? What did you hope to change?
This is only intended for US t-mobile galaxy tab users who get redirected to at-mobile website instead of having complete access to browsing.
so i should be able to do this on my gsm international galaxy tab? i get redirected when trying to use a data connection via my g2 sim card.

USA ATT Thrill Running Gingerbread with 4G (Success)

Hi there,
There has been a lot of discussion about how to get the USA ATT version of the P925 Thrill4g up and running fully with 4g enabled and working.
I have upgraded my LG Thrill 4G from stock froyo direct from the AT&T store to Android Version: 2.3.5 with Baseband: L620_MODEM_SIC_01.1042.00 showing Model Number: LG-P925g with Kernel Version 2.6.35.7 and Build Number GRJ90. I assure you, I am too stupid to make any of this up, so if you are interested in reading the easily enough accomplished, very descriptive method, read on.
After many a try due to the numerous blind alley posts and dead links, here are my findings:
Ingredients: Tip: Download and extract these BEFORE following the process:
The flashing tool that I found here
The flashing tool fixes 1 & 2 that I found here
The driver that I had to use (attched) named "LGAndroidDriver_Ver_1.0_All.exe".zip
The rom/kdz that I found here
The program to root the rom that I found here
The cleanup program to remove the unwanted programs from the new rom that I found here
Fine Print:
1. Back Up Everything - This will wipe your phone, which isn't that big of a deal if your most important data is in the cloud with Google.
2. I created NOTHING. I just failed until I found exactly what works and could perform the tasks with relative ease, precision, and get reliable and predictable results. All the links and downloads here....please follow those links and give those people some love.
3. Yada Yada I take no responsibility if you roger your phone but good. I can help you, but I assure you, there are many other people here who are more experienced who would be happy to do that for you.
4. This post is intentionally verbose so that everyone can participate in unscrewing themselves from AT&T, please feel free to comment on your findings with this process.
5. Unless explicitly otherwise specified, run all programs as administrator, and, if you can, in XP SP2 compatibility mode.
(Relatively easy method): Read ALL instructions completely before proceeding.
A. Install Small Server And Modify It
I went here and followed the instructions - they are basic:
1. Download http://smallsrv.com/ - the latest version will do nicely
2. Install and Run program as an administrator (right click on program)
3. Go to Settings (right click on the top menu bar of the program)
4. Go to HTTP Settings
5. Change Port to 9002
6. Extract the Content of the zip file named "www.zip" into C:\shttps\www
7. Edit C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\host in notepad and add the following line:
127.0.0.1 csmg.lgmobile.com (click here for screenshots of all of this)
8. Save and close the file
B. Drivers, Parsers, and COM-Phone Connection
I followed the instructions here . Follow along!
1. Install Drivers (attached) and msxml.msi (found in the flashing tools you downloaded), then reboot your computer
2. Open Server Program, leave it running
3. Remove your phone battery
4. open your pc device manager (in control panel) and look at COM and PORT section
5. hold volume up button (only) and connect your mobile to pc through USB while pressing this button, and keep pressing until you see a new port has been added and installed in your COM and PORT section (about 15-20 sec), now you can release the button, be sure that port will stay apparent after releasing the button, or repeat this step (with longer press on volume up button)
6. At this point, you may/will need to point your COM/PORT (LGE MOBILE) to the newly install drivers (found at C:\Program Files\LG Electronics) so that the computer knows what device you just plugged in)
7. put your battery back and don't touch your phone again (edit: It took me a bit to get the COM/PORT to register, but when it does - LET GO OF THE VOLUME+ BUTTON. Alternatively you can, while holding the volume+ button, right click on the COM/PORT error you see and then start pointing the computer to the appropriate driver) Do not proceed until your computer recognizes the device. If you would like, you can map the PORT/COM to COM41 by clicking on ports, right click on the LGE USB, select properties, click on the tab port settings, click on advanced, change port to 41 and click ok
8. As an aside, you can also begin the flashing process below without completing the above steps by putting your device in debugging mode. That post is here but it did not work for me that way so I provided the instructions above for those of you who need a more certain method
C. Flash Phone
Open/unzip/extract the flashing tools to begin the flashing process with screenshots here
1. Install "B2CAppSetup.exe" and run LGMobile update - the ONLY error you should encounter is that LGMobile update can't find an internet connection. Good! The Server is working and LGMobile won't kill the update process.
2. Run as administrator "windows enabler.exe" and switch to the "ON" position( left click on icon in icon tray)
3. Your phone is already connected, so you need to Start "UpTestEX_mod2_marwin.exe", select and browse to your v20c KDZ file.
Set options emeregency, 3gQCT as pictured and press "NORMAL WEB UPGRADE TEST"
4. On the next screen, hit upgrade start
5. On the pop-up, hit clear registry, other country in the dropdown, and your language of choice (presumably english) and select ok.
6. The program will start the official LG Flasher - have a 5 minute coffee break.
D.Clean Up
Your phone is now flashed.
1. Hit exit on the LG Flasher and unplug your phone.
2. Press and hold the 3D button and the Volume- (down) button, and the power button until you feel a vibration
3. Once the wipe screen comes up, go ahead and clear out everything one at a time (the volume keys are up and down and the 3d key is enter)
4. After that, select the reboot phone option
5. Reinstall SIM card and External SD
6. Power phone on
7. Skip or exit all prompts
8. Set phone in debugging mode (settings/applications/development/debugging)
9. Connect phone to computer - device manager should still be open - make sure it picks up the COM/PORT - you don't have to hold down any buttons
E. Root phone
We're getting close - almost there!
1. You downloaded Megatron from here - open run.bat
2. It will root your phone for you (one of the easiest steps ever) by pressing enter.
3. The phone will restart many times. When run.bat is all finished, it will ask you to press enter to exit - do not remove phone due to the next step - just press enter and the window will go away
F. Clean Up
Clean up Rogers Bloat referenced from post here
1. In the Remove Roggers File folder, click run.bat and make your selections
2. I chose 1 and 3 and leave the APN alone
3. Then, press 4 to reboot your phone
4. Finally, disconnect phone from computer
G. Enable Data Connection
Set your APN to enable data connection (you should already see 4g, but you won't yet have data or MMS
1. On your phone, go to Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Mobile Networks -> enable Data Enabled -> Access Point Names -> menu button -> New APN ->
2. Place these values in manually: excerpted from post here
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username:[email protected]
Password:CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MCC:310
MNC:410
Leave the rest of the fields blank
APN Type: leave blank
3. Save and Select APN
4. Reboot Phone
---At this point, you should be all finished with a working Gingerbread AT&T Thrill4G getting 4G on your phone, receiving MMS, etc. so go ahead and set up your google account and finish that pot of coffee.
I believe the last method for 4g works to get data enabled, but not at 4g speeds ( or at least their h+ speeds)
There's a method to update/replace the flex provider.HTML, I'm still not 100% clear on how to change that so i stuck to the method you laid out and have had no problems.
Besides, i keep my antenna on 2g mode only to save battery life, I'm on wifi at home and at work so i hardly have a need for their faux g.
Sent from my LG-P925g using xda premium
Thank you! I had tried the modify flex.xml post and was met with force close errors. I experienced fauxG when I enabled flex as well. I know that it is different for everyone, so take this with a grain of salt, but my speeds were back to where they were out of the box when I followed this method. For me, that meant my speeds were doubled compared to when I used Flex.
As to the method to change flex.xml, I got a file explorer from the market specifically for rooted phones. Found the flex.xml file, edited the permissions and then edited the file per the post. Then I rebooted and lo and behold, it said 4g, but that was simply not the case in terms of the speeds I experienced.
The OP is a method for USA users that worked for me to get my full 4g working again. I also tested that with netspeed (i realize it is flawed, but that's what I use).

Ghosting is not a known issue on v20c. Can you specify?
A lot of people are experiencing ghost calls on v20c and I'm willing to bet that those who think they aren't don't realize when they do. I tried everything and still got ghost calls and missed texts. My wife would call my office and ask why I'm not answering my cell phone.
Oh yes. Durden - I remember your post. You are referencing, I believe

The majority of the complaints tend to center around using roms that were not in some way stock. This puts your phone out in stock Rogers, which I can't find any explicit issues with. I haven't put that in there because what you do with your phone after you flash is isn't covered in the post. I'm describing the method and providing the links, as stated in the OP.
The other type of complaint is from people using some form of 21. The posts I link to also have downgrade explanations. While there are several complaints, there are many happy folks. Here as well.
Interesting, thanks for the guide. I'll give this a try in a few days.
No problem. I posted this in general so everyone could take a look. I posted my findings in the OP - let us know yours so we can edit the guide for readability if need be.

I never rooted my phone or flashed anything but stock KDZs. No matter which one I tried I always got ghost calls. Most of the articles and public complaints come from others on stock GB especially since root for v20c has only been around for a week or so. This is a really good tutorial (albeit found a couple other places), it's what I did back when Rogers first released GB and I posted my own little tutorial. I honestly hope you guys don't miss any calls. I'm tempted to even try it again cause Froyo is slow as hell and freezes up on me a ton but at least I'm not missing any calls or texts. I would be very interested in hearing from all of you after several days. It seems like I went a couple weeks on Rogers GB before I realized how bad of an issue I was having.
BTW when you said "Hold Vol Down+3D+Power to get the recovery menu and wipe everything one by one" did you mean all of these?
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
wipe cache partition and package recovery
clear nv dynamic partition
I have been running v20c for almost two weeks and can assure you I am not getting any ghosting. How do I know? I use youmail, and get e-mails when I miss calls and/or get voicemails. All the missed calls I see in youmail are also on my phone as missed calls-usually happening while I am asleep. Seems pretty solid. As for my APN, I only set mine up for data as I could care less about MMS. My APN setup is
Name-ATT HSDPA
APN-phone
The rest are left blank.
Speedtest.net app confirms my data speeds run comparable to my SGS2 Skyrocket speeds (to be fair, I live in an area with 3G, and no HSDPA or 4G LTE as of yet). So all in all, I am very pleased with the Rogers v20c on my AT&T LG Thrill. Lord knows AT&T is never going to get around to releasing an official GB for it. As far as official releases go, you are probably more likely to see ICS before GB. Although, both are probably just pipe dreams. Thank goodness for XDA devs.
I use youmail too. Sometimes the person calling me got my voicemail. Sometimes they got "the subscriber you are calling is unavailable"
Thanks for this writeup, I followed it to flash over the Rogers gingerbread from the European open one. The only thing I did different is use drivers from Adixtra's writeup for the KDZ, for some reason the ones you provided wouldn't recognize the phone correctly. All I can say is wow, I totally forgot how nice it is to have the 850 MHz band lol. I never get less than 3 bars now, while the European one I would barely get the 3G/4G signal most places and would be flaky even on the EDGE network. And just a note to all the people confused about the whole "4G" speeds thing on different basebands: The only thing different about the European baseband is that you lose the 850 MHz band. From my experience, it provided the same 3G/4G speeds whether I was on the North American baseband or the European one, the only difference was in the coverage. But losing the 850 MHz band sucks, that's the one that penetrates buildings better I think.

NP - that was a biggie for me too. I am glad you found a working driver. No one has really been able to isolate the ghosting issue, although it has been demonstrated that it is not a hardware issue. I would recommend using the driver provided to standardize the results of this writeup, though, for the others who are looking to give it a shot.

I am using Google Voice (free). I have used youmail in the past and it became apparent that if I wanted transcribed voicemail for free, I would need to go to Google. I really liked the youmail features though.
can i use v21D_00 instead of V20?

APN settings are neither saved nore displayed in list

I don't understand it. I cannot save a APN into the list. I enter my APN, MCC, MNC and give a name to the APN and save it. It won't appear in the list. I had this issue often. In former times I used ROM Manager and did "fix permissions script" but I cannot use ROM Manager anymore, because I have safestrap installed. So, is this is a file permissions issue? How can I fix that? I am not able to use 3G anymore :/ why the hell are the APNs not saved?
any help appreciated.
Hi. I had this problem.
On the stock rom, I had to disable and re-enable airplane mode for APNs to work.
If it still doesn't show up, add it manually to apns-conf, disable/enable airplane mode, then go to APN settings > menu key > reset to default. This will re-read the apns-conf.
If it doesn't work I suggest getting a new sim-card. The first 2 weeks I used my (couple of years) old sim card and the droid 3 couldn't read the MNC/MCC from the sim.. even though other phones could.
The airplanemode bug was also solved by using Mavrom, it's a great ROM either way

You're welcome. Note that the problem kept re-appearing for me every once in a while. When leaving WiFI area it wouldn't go back to 3G, and I had to switch airplanemode. Mavrom fixed it for me, but maybe you're lucky
Ok. As I didn't try any custom ROM I cannot tell you. I am running stock. Maybe you can tell me as you are already using Maverick ROM 3.0. Does BT AUDIO (listening through Bluetooth my mp3 through my Droid3) and camera/video work 100% with Droid3 ?

Using 4.0 btw .
I haven't tried BT audio, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. Since there have several releases before 4.0 I assume someone would've noticed if it didn't.
Camera/video works 100%. The rom doesn't really kill any essential features.
Either way, if you install the rom with safestrap, your original rom will be backed up. It allows you to swap back to your stock rom with a click of a button. (and vice versa)
switch airplane mode - ok

Helped too, but I think it's mistake of (old) SIM card. But it does not work only in Motorola Droid 3, I have tried Samsun, and it was ok ... strange.
The slot with contacts in Droid 3 is not holding the SIM card fixed.
I found a solution for saving the APN:
This worked for me:
- Go to Dial Number and type *#*#4636#*#* for the hidden (info)menu in Android
- touch 'phone information'
- search for 'Set preferred network' or something like that (I'm from Belgium so my phone is in the Dutch language)
- change 'WCDMA preferred' to 'CDMA auto (prl)'
- you're good to go and you can save your APNs now (after changing, they worked without the need of manual editing)

- search for 'Set preferred network' or something like that (I'm from Belgium so my phone is in the Dutch language)
- change 'WCDMA preferred' to 'CDMA auto (prl)'
- you're good to go and you can save your APNs now (after changing, they worked without the need of manual editing)

I will try this and see if it works on mine, I had that same problem trying to use the straight talk apn on my phone.

I had to reply to thank you, i was dying to have this fixed and reset did the trick, thanks a lot = )
To add to this, I found great results flashing a modem after my APN settings not saving after installing cm11-20141112-snapshot-m12-d2lte.
I flashed modem_CWM_I747MUMUEND3.
Same problems hear. Any answer

[Q] 3g no longer working?

Hello everyone. As you may guess from the topic title, I'm having a rather serious issue - my Captivate is no longer connecting to 3G or even to Edge - though it connects to Wi-Fi just fine.
It all started about a week ago, but has since progressed to a frustrating degree.
Basically, I was running Cognition 3.03, and everything was going fine - and then after hitting Flight Mode, I couldn't reactivate my data connections. I'd reboot the phone, and I'd be able to connect for about a minute or so after booting, and then Flight Mode would re-enable by itself; needless to say, it was very frustrating.
After looking around the Internet for some help, I eventually flashed what I presume is supposedly a stock rom - specifically I897UCKB1 - and thus we get to my current issue - no 3G access at all, no Edge, though I can still make and receive calls and send and receive text messages.
I guess it should be mentioned that I've had the phone about a year and a half (got it in November 2010, and therefore not up for a new phone until then), and generally put it to heavy use data-wise.
I had read somewhere that it might be an issue with my SIM card, but switching SIM cards with my dad did not solve the problem at all.
Could it be a problem with the modem or whatever that connects with the 3G network?
Thanks for your help (and for reading all of that!)

It does sound like you're having a modem issue. The easiest way to correct this would be to go to the Modems thread at the top of the Development section and find a modem that works with your ROM (KB1). Flash that from recovery and see if it fixes it.
If not, you may need to flash back to stock and re-flash Cognition.
Also, check your apn settings. There's an option to reset to default. Try that.

Sorry it took so long to reply - my home Internet access is... not good, so I have to go into the public library to do anything for the time being.
Anyway, my phone was being unruly and wouldn't let me do anything last night after I downloaded the modem that's supposed to work with my ROM - I couldn't even root it for whatever reason. I'm in the middle of downloading the supposedly official stock Gingerbread ROM (KK4) and I'm going to try from there later tonight.

Unfortunately I don't see anything about that. I go Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile Network, see Access Point Names, and it says it's empty and asks if I want to add an APN. I have no idea about what to do with that, so I'm not going to try right now.

once you Get to the screen asking if you want to add an apn, hit menu. One of the options should be reset to default. If you have no apn, that would explain why you have no 3g, etc.

Thanks for the quick reply.
When I go into Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile networks, it brings up a list of four items
-Use packet data (with the checkmark)
-Data roaming (with a checkmark, unchecked)
-Access Point Names
-Network Operators.
Clicking Access Point Names brings up a notification box APN Empty: Add an APN? Ok/Cancel. Hit OK, and it brings up a list of things for me to type in - hit menu and it only brings up Save and Discard. Hit Cancel, and it takes me back to the previously listed four items.
Clicking Network Operators shows Default Setup, but it's grayed out, and pressing the menu button does nothing.
Sorry for double post, but good news!
I flashed the 2.3.5 ROM I mentioned above, and it all works now!

Droid Bionic on Straight Talk?

I'm trying to get Straight Talk working with this Bionic. Could someone help?
Not sure but...
I used to be a Verizon Wireless agent (Straight Talk piggy backs on their network.) If I remember right straight talk/net10/verizon's own prepaid phones are limited to 3G devices only. Policies may have changed, or I could potentially be wrong but I am going to guess that you won't be able to get it working on their network because they won't be able to issue you a compatible SIM
You have to edit the build.prop and create a local.prop (it probably doesn't exist). I recently put SlimKat 4.4.4 on my friend's Bionic, and got it working well with Straight Talk (Voice, MMS, Data, etc). Just edit build.prop with:
persist.radio.ap.phonetype=1
ro.mot.phonemode.vzw4gphone=0
ro.mot.phonemode.vzwglobalphone=1
ro.telephony.default_network=3
ro.telephony.gsm-routes-us-smsc=0
telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=0
Create a local.prop file and add:
ro.telephony.ril.v3=signalstrength
Move this into /data/
Next, go into system/etc/ and get your apns-conf.xml file and delete all the entries you don't need, keeping only the one relevant to Straight Talk. In my friend's case:
Code:
<apns version="7">
<apn carrier="StraightTalk ATT" mcc="310" mnc="410" apn="tfdata" port="80" mmsc="http://mms-tf.net" mmsproxy="mms3.tracfone.com" mmsport="80" type="default,supl,mms,hipri" />
</apns>
For the novices, to do this last part, you'll need a file manager like ES that can utilize root permissions after enabling in settings.
After this, any 4.3 or 4.4 ROM should let you edit APN settings, etc. You may need to set your radio to GSM (auto PRL) by going into your dialer and hitting *#*#4636#*#* and going into Phone Information then down to network type or whatever. I don't have a Motorola phone in front of me If that doesn't work, I've noticed GSM/WCDMA (auto PRL) works for some.
Good luck
Edit: I forgot one crucial thing you must do. You have to use RadioComm to enable GSM/UMTS bands. You can find it with Google. The version I used is 11.12.2. You'll either have a green or purple light on the right side, signifying that your phone is connected. It should show up in the status bar too. Steps:
Ensure you have correct Motorola drivers and that device shows up in device manager (You may need to use Google USB driver, as this has worked with some Motorola phones for me)
Ensure that USB is in PC Tools mode
In Radiocomm go to MA->COMMON->MDM 6x00
Go to the FTM Common1 tab, and wait for purple or green light on side
Toward the top of NVAccess you'll see a select box. Scroll to NV item 1877 NV_RF_BC_CONFIG_I
Click on read value
Once read, replace the first 8 bytes with: 8703E80400000200 (back up original as a .txt file or something)
Write the new value to the device and reboot
There's also a flashable zip that does this, but I've not tested it. Use at your own risk:

I'm not sure what the deal is - I'm trying to do the same thing, but with T-Mobile US rather than Straight Talk... Should work fine, but when I make the above changes, I get com.android.phone stopped working over and over. If I follow every step above, but instead of "ro.telephony.default_network=3", I use "ro.telephony.default_network=7", it works fine, I can make calls on T-Mobile, but the signal strength is horrible. I can be where I normally have full 2G/3G signal, and the Bionic barely has one bar if anything. Most of the time it just says "No Service" unless I step outside, whereas my other T-mobile specific phones have no problems with the signal anywhere in my house.
What might I be doing wrong here? I just bought the Bionic as a backup as I've been told it works fine with GSM when you do the above tweaks, but I'm finding it's real-world operability on GSM to be less than stellar.

What rom are you using? I've used this technique on a ridiculous number of bionic roms to make them GSM so hopefully I can help, it's worth noting that I do not create a localprop. I found that most roms have the "ro.telephony.ril.v3" line in the default.prop and I can simply amend them by adding "signalstrength," (note the comma to include the end of the quotes) at the beginning of the entry. You might try wiping the rom and starting over but skip the step changing the radio with the *#*#4636#*#* part

The settings adjusted in the default.prop permit that you do not need to change the radio. since i started using these particular settings, I've never had to change it and additionally found it to be commonly problematic. I also found that MOST roms do not need you to add the straight talk APN. Cyanogen and Paranoid, I know for fact include them. When you boot the phone for the first time you'll need to go into the settings and select the appropriate Straight Talk APN (mine is the MVNO one).

I've tried with stock JB, as well as CM11 M11 in Slot 1. I've wiped and started over more times than I can count.
What do you mean that you add "signalstrength," at the beginning of the ro.telephony.ril.v3 entry? It's my understanding that the entry should be "ro.telephony.ril.v3=signalstrength". I don't understand what you mean by putting signalstrength at the beginning of the entry. Also, what's up with that comma?
Then again, all my difficulties could be in the fact that I have a "HW C" Bionic. Just got a "HW A" model, and will be tinkering with that soon too. It actually came with original Stock 5.5.886 Gingerbread ROM... Right now, I plan on upgrading to the 232 ICS leak (so I can go back to GB if needed), and see if I can get GSM working on it a little better.
How would you recommend I proceed with a bone stock ICS 6.7.232 ROM?
Thanks a BUNCH for your reply on this old (but fun to tinker with) phone!

Ahhhh yes, i believe you found the root of the issue. The method that was used for Ginger Bread was slightly different which almost certainly why the above may not be working for you. I practically forgot about that, I upgraded mine years ago. I've grown so fond of the bionic I'm on my third you can buy them second hand for like $50 to $100. So i Just keep fixing/repairing them haha.
I'm gonna dig through some old book marks and tutorials and find out how I upgraded mine originally and I'll post them up here for you. The timing of this coming up is almost bizarre. I'm actually in the middle of working on a website that lets you point it at a rom, it downloads it, modifies it for GSM, then provides you a link to download it. I'd actually like to make it an Android app because when I download rom updates, I have to make them GSM compatible first.

As I mentioned above, I just received the phone that's still running Gingerbread on Rev. A Hardware. Haven't even tried to start messing with that phone yet.
The original phone I was having trouble with, prompting the post to this thread, was running stock Jelly Bean on Rev. C hardware.
You say you're on your 3rd Bionic because you like them so much! They are a rugged and capable phone, for sure. What carrier have you been using it with? I've been attempting plain old T-Mobile, but assume making it work for Straight Talk would make it work for T-Mobile as well, aside from APN settings.
How's your signal strength on your bionic compared to an official GSM phone, both for calls and data?

The #1 reason I continue using bionics is because of how cheap parts are if I need them (like when I drop them and break the screen ) and accessories. Like I have several docks that I've bought for like $7 a piece (retail was like ridiculous $40 or something but just for a dock $7 is dirt cheap). I even got the lapdock that I picked up on ebay for $50. You can't beat it. That thing is awesome. Add to it that you can get a micro HDMI to HDMI cable, hook this thing up to a TV and use it as an entertainment player sorta like a roku and it just keeps getting better. You can then use another android device and run AllCast to turn it into a chromecast wannabe. I've just found endless fun, with this particular model of android.
I personally utilize Straight Talk. No BS, $45 every month, no surprises. Love it. As far as GSM signal goes, it's like any other GSM phone!

So here's what I would do
1) Update to Jelly Bean (you can do this with official Motorola OTA updates or more info here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2235946)
2) Power on phone and edit the hex values with Radiocomm see: post 29/30 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297714&page=3
- - Be PARTICULARLY picky about this part, I found this to be extraordinarily difficult time and time again. Even though I've done it at least 5 or 6 times, I felt like it never went exactly as it should. After changing the value, you might even disconnect, reconnect, and make sure the hex value has changed.
3) Root the phone (this guide seems a little indepth but it works very well once you get it down compared to other methods http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256439)
4) At this point you have a choice of either modifying stock rom or use custom ROMS. I HIGHLY recommend custom ROMS, the stock ROM is highly bloated. I have found that AOSP based ROMS like Cyanogen or Paranoid (personal recommendation), work considerably better in general in addition to being more suited for GSM usage.
Should you choose custom roms then here's what I would do next, I have found this is the easiest way to consistently use GSM:
a) You'll want to install SafeStrap or something similar (I've only got experience with SafeStrap personally and understand the developer has suspended his project from future updates but still works for me) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391875
b) Once you have that, you can download almost any ROM, extract it to a folder, change the build.prop with the proper GSM configuration you listed, find the line for "ro.telephony.ril.v3" inside build.prop and add "signalstrength," (including punctuation) immediately after the equal sign. Don't bother with local.prop.
c) Re-zip it just like it was before, then install the ROM in a SafeStrap slot (probably want to add GApps)
d) Once it's booted, you can connect to wifi to setup the Google Acct and whatnot, then (this part varies slightly depending on the rom but AOSP roms are all pretty similar) go into the Settings: Mobile Networks: Access Point Names: Select the carrier of your choice (there's literally hundreds preloaded)
Lot of detail but a lot of specifics left out, if I can expound on anything please let me know which areas are too vague.
UPDATE: Here's the ROM I'm currently using. I literally install this thing with safe strap along with the pa gapps modular micro and just use it. No editing files, no thing. Just use it.

Wow! This is above and beyond! Truly thankful for this guide. I'm fairly familiar with ROMs in general and putting Safestrap on the Bionic... but the fact that you hand-edited the PA ROM and provided a link... I deserve not such service!
Will attempt a flash tonight and let you know. Still plan to keep stock 232 ICS leak, since it will never get used once PA is installed! Will reply tomorrow if I get everything working!
Thanks again!

What version of Safestrap are you running? I installed 3.73, and once installed, my stock ICS 232 gets stuck on the boot animation forever. FXZ back to 905 and then update to 232 to get back into ICS...
I dunno, maybe I'm making a big deal out of wanting to keep the path back to gingerbread. I should probably just bite the bullet and go up to stock JB first as you mentioned...

For some reason I distinctly remember their being a link between the stock rom, and those installed in rom slots. I'm currently using 3.7.2. I also THINK I recall that a while back when I wanted to use SafeStrap 3.5 I only could do so if I upgrade to JB. I can't find any documentation to back these up so take it with a grain of salt. Personally, I'm one who upgrades and never looks back so maybe I'm just biased haha

Dailen (the artist formerly known as Plasmaleto),
I took the plunge and updated to stock JB, rooted, installed Safestrap 3.73, then installed your pre-GSM-configured version of Paranoid ROM. Rebooted, connected to wifi, got everything setup. Powered down, inserted my T-Mobile SIM card, and voila! Full HSPA signal! 5.01mb/sec download, 1.22mb/sec upload. Outgoing calls work! Incoming calls work! Data works! Super cool! Thanks again!
Congrats! Glad that worked for ya!

Also, since you're a Bionic nut, I don't suppose you have a version of CarbonROM sitting around from before they dropped support for the Bionic? I contacted them and was surprised to learn that they have absolutely ZERO archive of old version downloads.

Well in theory the answer is yes. The way my script works, it changes only what it finds. If you can send me a link to one of the roms you'd like to try I'd be happy to take a look at the build.prop and tell you for sure if anything is missing.
Also, I don't recall having the carbonrom sitting around anywhere but I see their github still has the source posted, I suppose I could always try compiling for you. I got a couple ubuntu systems running I could put to some good use. Might take a few days.
Give it a shot!
Going to give this a shot right now on a friends Bionic. Unfortunately have to wait a few days for the Straight Talk Sim card to arrive. I'll report back.
Think I screwed up!

I believe I have screwed up. I tried the radiocomm program last night and everything was green for me but I didn't write to the phone. I installed the pa_targa-4.6-BETA5-20141022.GSM.zip file, and the Gapps for that ROM. When I tried to go into Radiocomm again, it comes up red when I try to read (1877). Do I still need to do that or will the phone be good to go once I pop in an AT&T sim card? Thanks, Howie

Radiocomm is EXTREMELY particular and I swear it only works 3 out of 5 times. I seem to recall that when I did it, it wasn't "writing" the settings properly and I had to change the USB connection type. If my current setup is any indicator, it was set to "PST USB Driver". I also recall that one time I uninstalled the bionic drivers and reinstalled them and it started working.
It's probably worth mentioning that I would connect to your phone in Radiocomm while in the stock rom if possible. There's no telling if there's some quirky specific USB driver in the rom that Radiocomm depends on. When in doubt, try a different machine. Be sure to get the Bionic USB drivers working 100% (meaning no device errors in device manager) prior to doing the radiocomm stuff.
