I am thinking about the same thing. I can probably get about $200 off eBay for my Vivid and upgrade to the Nexus 4 for $299. I am fine with not having LTE since LTE is not available in my area and I don't find myself suffering with the "slow" data speed.

I am pretty much planning on it, but I need the cash up front first. I don't have another phone and the Nexus 4 isn't available yet so the vivid has to stick around. I usually get $500 in Christmas cash every year, hopefully this year is no different.
That being said if the in call mic issues get resolved on cm10, I'll probably keep my phone. Imo a phone with good hardware like the Vivid with the latest version of cm is as good as a nexus, like my captivate, if you took the plunge and rooted, it was all but a nexus!

Discussion: How bad of a hit has development taken due to HTC's lies?

Hey guys, just wondering what your opinion is on how this locked bootloader issue has affected the potential development of this phone. How bad do you think it really is? Countless people have returned their phones. I'm sure many potential devs have strayed from this phone or HTC as a whole due to this issue. This is a damn good phone as stock, who knows how much better it could be if it were unlocked from the start. What do you guys think the development will be like once it does get unlocked?

I've gotta think it'll pick up. The Inspire was the only "4G" HTC phone for a long time so I can't imagine HTC coming out with anything new on ATT for a little while at least so I gotta think if things do get rolling people will come.

I sure hope so, but it is depressing to think how many people we have already lost and how much potential devlopment is lost. I'm not sure how big of a factor LTE is to people though, considering it isn't widely available. Not sure when the next AT&T HTC phone will be coming out, but locked bootloader or not, this thing is a beast and is getting ICS. I really don't see a better AT&T phone out right now. Samsung Touchwiz is boring, and so is the Samsung development. There's just so much more devs can do with sense.

I'm kicking myself because I keep telling myself I'm just going to pay full retail and get international devices. I may still look for an Evo 3D or something, but although I'm in a non LTE area I can't wait for it to arrive.
I'll stick with this device and learn to develope for it should the day ever arrive. I'm sure if we ever get root, more devs will migrate. It is a truly capable device and a huge step from my tp2.
it will pick up some if the BL ever gets unlocked.
It really is sad that htc/att are dragging their feet on this. They are losing customers every day, I'm returning mine tomorrow. I really like the vivid but am a flashaholic. I have an amaze also and it doesn't really have much dev attention. I don't really understand why, it's also a great device. I honestly would probably be keeping my vivid if I didn't have the amaze, I'm a fan of the sense ui. I'll be giving the nitro a test for the next 30 days, it should be easy to root with super one click but as with most att devices it will probably take 3 weeks or so just to get a forum for it since it's not a Samsung device.

Could you return the Vivid, get another phone, and then return that phone and get a Vivid again? I'm just curious on how AT&T's return/exchange works. Is there a limit of some sort?

Yea, that's what I would probably do if I didn't buy my phone off-contract. Who knows when the next HTC phone on AT&T will come out. The last high end one was the Inspire and that was months and months ago. I think it'll be tough for these people that have always been with HTC to just switch and stay with another brand for a long period of time. Samsung UI is so boring it's not even funny.
Hmm right now I have a Samsung Captivate and I'm either going to the HTC Vivid or SGS2 and right now it seems like the Vivid is not the best option.
I flash ROMs weekly on my Captivate. I guess I was still ignorant and didn't know about HTC's decision to not keep the bootloader so open, like they promised.
Looks like the Samsung SGS2 is the better route...
I picked up a skyrocket because of the locked bootloader but as soon as its unlocked ill trade it for a vivid no doubt. HTC is good with making phones

Seriously considering canceling my Nexus 4 order now...

A couple weeks ago I hated this phone and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. But then Google fumbled the launch of the nexus 4 and I'm stuck waiting. I contemplated paying full price for a gs3,one x+, or optimus G, but $550 is just too much so I've been forced to try and like this phone, so what happened exactly?
#1. I realized since I got the ics update from day one I've been trying to break sense 3.6 and combine mods with it. Never did I ever really give it a chance so I decided to do just that. My old wcx 9/27 mod build was performing like crap, mainly Google now combined with my alterations so it was time to update, but this time I went for his pure stock build. The result is my phone is performing snappier than my Nexus 7, and I'm starting to like sense 3.6.
2. Can a case make you hate your phone? The answer is yes, yes it can. I shed the old otterbox commutter and I am currently going naked with a cheap tpu case on the way. It's a different phone without it. It's slim, sexy, and the screen is easier to touch on the sides. You couldn't beat the protection but it completely kills the asthetics and usability of the phone. For this reason I'm done with otterbox, sticking with clear tpu cases now, and only for grip reasons, otherwise I'd just go naked.
3. For once their is hope for this phone from a development prospective. CM is almost complete and these guys really have banded together to pull this off and I congratulate all of them. I definitely plan on donating at some point, just hard when my wife doesn't quite get that lol.
And then just other things like I'm certain that build quality of the vivid is better. Also I can live without lte, a removable battery, and sd slot but I'd prefer not too. Overall Google has just given me too much time to think.
I'm still keeping the order in now but my vivid will be kept around regardless. Overall we have a great phone here, just spent too much time trying to make it better instead of enjoying it

I know exactly what you mean. I used CM as a daily driver a couple months ago, even though my carrier is AT&T and voice calling didn't work at that time.
Now that voice calling works, this phone has at least another year of life (maybe more?) left in it.
Lesson learned, though, I bought the Vivid a week after initial release. Now, I'm only buying phones after CM announces official support.

It is nicer with official cm support but the devs here have done a great job with cm10 and the other jelly bean roms.

Another year should be easy, hell I was using a Captivate to start the year with, a phone released in July of 2010.
I'm going to go through with my Nexus order, because I've always wanted one but unlike my Captivate, the vivid will be kept around for backup. Gonna have to find a nice sim adapter though because the nexus 4 uses micro sims

Advice about getting a phone

Hi!
I'm currently waiting for my SGSII to come back from Samsung, it got bricked almost two months ago...
Now, I have the chance to recover it's price (290 eur) or wait until I get it back
If only nexus 4 were available somehow, I'd get the money and buy the 16Gb model ..... I need some opinion.... what would you people do?
Thanks!!

If you can get your hands on it, buy nexus 4.
If size is not an issue, buy note 2.
If you don't mind waiting, buy s4
For the price, I was thinking about waiting around for nexus 4 8Gb version: I don't want to spend more money... but.... will I have to wait 2 more months? 3 perhaps? That's what's making me doubt: If I knew I would be able to buy it next week, I would wait.. but 2 months... it's something I would have to think about....

The price is too much.... I want a device with good specifications but what I mind most is that it should be fully open so the devs can release updates until the hardware gives up.... not until they find a difficulty like an undocumented chipset, having to stay weeks without sound, missing functions... etc etc....

While the nexus 4 is awesome and aosp is awesome, you will not find the custom ROMs to have much variation. On my sensation we had sense and aosp, but on the nexus we have aosp and we might get miui whenever that comes out with 4.2, but that's about it. If you love aosp, go with the nexus. Otherwise get your device with your bloat of choice.

Yes, we know... but there is a slight problem with the stock.... as you know....
If there were no problem with it, many more people would already have it...
The good thing is that people is starting to get a bit smarter:
-They are starting to reject the enslaving carrier contracts offering way overpriced phones in exchange of years of slavery with them
-The search for bloated-free phones.
But what google & LG are doing with the availability of the phone is really unbelievable....
Would suggest waiting for the S4, if you can. The reason is that with the Tegra 4 and Exynos 5 out, it wouldn't take time for the quad chips the current phones have to become a thing of the past. If you want the newest technology then wait. If not, buy a Nexus 4. It's the best money can buy.

I don't want to spend 600 euros on a device.... 300-400 is enough.... over that, I think is overpriced.... it's paying 200 more euro for 400 mhz more.... in the end.. I think it's not worth it.... unless you are a tech geek that needs to have the latest device.
I prefer something more modest but efficient..... A SGSII is fine nowadays: All the daily use apps work and it has the latest CM available....
If you want to play games with your device, it's another story... then, it's mandatory to look into which graphic chipset is built into the device and so......
People talk about nexus 4 as if it were so easy to get your hands on one.... here in spain it has been sold out like since always.... and, as I can read, there is little hope of getting one in the next weeks..... so, what am I supposed to do, hang on to my galaxy spica (it's my emergency/replacement phone) until the end of 2013? :crying:

HTC First Discontinued

According to BGR, the First is about to be discontinued: http://bgr.com/2013/05/13/htc-first-discontinued-att-facebook-phone/
I love the First, it's a great size that can be used one-handed, it has stock Android, and the battery life is amazing. But I've held off buying one because I want to make sure it gets CyanogenMod support first. If it does get official CM support, I'll go out of my way to get one, if I still can.
Does anybody know how long it will take HTC to release the source for the First, so CM support might start?
The only competitor to the First on AT&T is probably the One Mini, but rumors are that the Mini will have a significantly smaller battery than the First (1700 instead of 2000mah).
Can't say I didn't see it coming. With the lack of support in this section I doubt it would get official CM support.
I might pick up one of these in the bargain bin if I find a good deal somewhere. I'm looking to open a second line for my daughter, without a contract and this one will fit the bill.

yeah might pick one up too. 150$ on eBay isn't bad of a deal.
That's disappointing. Now I question whether it would be a good idea to give my mom this phone.
On the other hand, there is a update with this statement from AT&T in the article:
As mentioned previously, we do pricing promotions all the time and have made no decisions on future plans.

This is one of the best phones I have seen for years. I dont understand why so few people bought it, it even has stock android... It should be easier to develop a working cm for this one than for all these galaxies out there. I would even get over the small storage for all the advantages.

I've been trying to figure out how to compile CM as well, do you have any repositories I could look at yet, or is it all still just on your local checkout? I'm not having as much luck, but I've never built CM for anything beyond my Galaxy Nexus before, so I'm not familiar with porting it to new devices.

This is sad to hear. I just got one for my grandmother too. While 4.1 is nice, the polish of 4.2 vastly improves the experience with things like a timer, stop watch, and swype keyboard. Sadly, I don'y see 4.2 coming official to this device.
The phone has descent specs, at least it could be a good option for some CM10.1 love
I might pick this up soon since it's so cheap now. Will this get 4.2 at least? Hope so. Seems like a good purchase. What color did you guys get it in?
very sad to hear indeed. its a terrific phone. the size is great, love the way the back feels, and the battery life is terrific imo. it feels very sturdy too. as soon as my store got a bunch of dummy units in i knew i was going to like it. im carrying around the company's seed unit and im very impressed (black model... gosh i love the look of that red and baby blue though). would love cm10.1 on this machine.
Here's another vote of confidence for this outcast phone. Really love the design. Who cares what software it's running, we'll flash our own anyway. I've been waiting so long for an upgrade from my HTC Aria, which I got specifically because it was small.
HTC has got to do something with all its unused stock, if they're smart they'll simply remove FB Home and push it back out, if they're dumb we should see these babies go for nothing like the HP TouchPad. Either way this phone has a lot of potential to sell like hotcakes.
Broke my HTC One X screen and got an HTC First for $50 brand new. Agree with all the other positive comments about this phone so far. Rooted. unlocked bootloader, freeze Facebook Home and loving every bit of it so far. My only gripe is the weak camera, but to find solid specs on a smaller form factor is so hard these days.
May I ask where you got it from?

How is the Nexus 4 on AT&T? do you get HSPA? or is it strictly 2g/EDGE?
Yeah I get hspa+, usually 6-12mb, it's not bad at all. Just make sure they don't mess with your plan and put the apn in from your vivid, otherwise you'll get stuck on the regular 3G plan. At&t did that to my wife.
Actually it was a big mess. I got mine in January, and I needed a micro sim. I went to the store, and the manager ended up taking care of me, and she gave me a micro sim, didn't mess with my account, and I was on my way. Well when my wife got hers in march, same thing went in there for a micro sim, but got a regular employee this time. When we got back her data wouldn't work at all! So I checked the account, and for whatever reason the idiot deleted her data plan all together! So I call at&t and get it back but they put her on the regular 3G plan for smartphones and the Vivid apn wouldn't even connect! Finally I talked to an employee on live chat the next day and got them to put her back on the lte plan!
So make sure they don't tamper with your account! Either that or get a sim cutter and try it out!

I've been thinking about getting either the Nexus 4 or the LG optimus G. Basically the same phone, I have another year on my contract but the Vivid is quickly dying out. After that I will probably jump to Tmobile as it will be cheaper than AT&T even with my corporate discount.
Yeah the nexus 4 was a no brainer for me, I was sick of my vivid, and I am under contract until march 2014, so it was the cheapest option. It's a nice phone especially for the price. But its not perfect either, I will warn you. Camera is a downgrade from the vivid, it doesn't suck, and in well lit rooms the camera is just as nice. But in low light, the vivid owns it. Also build quality doesn't suck but it's not built as nice as the vivid. It seems well built out of the box, but there are gaps between the screen and bezel that tend to get dust stuck in them and over time the back glass develops a slight creaking sound to it. Also the chrome around the outside edges gets scuffed, poor design choice imo, should of used a flat silver instead.
Figured I'd lay it to you straight. It's an excellent phone but it's not perfect. And make sure you get a case if you get one, back glass is very slick and the phone tends to make suicide dives on its own when you just sit it down. Happened to me twice, luckily, no damage.

When my wife's Galaxy 2 Skyrocket got its SECOND upgrade (originally Gingerbread, upgraded to ICS, then upgraded to Jellybean) and when HTC said that the Vivid would NOT get an upgrade to Jellybean, that was what made my mind up that this was the last HTC phone that I would own. I've had three, but I am done with HTC. That S4 looks sooooo good!
My dad and one of my friends have an Optimus G. Its a nice phone.

I thought the same thing this is the last htc i will buy.
My Optimus G arrives Friday, looks like just in time as the forum is dying again (the 2nd time since I have had my Vivid.)
Yeah the phone is getting old and people are getting their early upgrades now. If cyanogenmod would of came last summer, development might still be going but now, too little too late.
Lesson learned for me, if it's not a popular device, don't upgrade to it. Yeah at first I was happy but a couple months in, the honeymoon was over and the bugs of sense 3.6 that were never address, terrible battery life, and no actual roms outside of modified stock roms had me plotting a plan to get a galaxy nexus... But by the time I had the money, the nexus 4 was out, and well that's a no brainer

Well it is sad to say this but I have officially retired my HTC Velocity 4G. I said before that this phone will be my last HTC but the HTC One was just to cool to ignore.
