4.2 Being Pushed To AOSP NOW - Nexus 4 General

Hi Guys
Found this: https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/android-building/-ymcoMuDAbA
Nexus Factory Images (Nexus 4 image is on there): https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images

Nexus 4 is not supported by AOSP.

Not being a developer, I'm not really sure of the implications of this. What are the implications?

Meaning the sources for N4 will not be provided by Google, like they did/do with all other Nexus devices. You won't be able to just download the Android sources and build a ROM like you were able to with other nexus devices.

Can you give us a link? I just ordered a Nexus 4 and this is awful news.
The Groups link doesn't use clear language and doesn't rule out future release..

this shouldn't be in the dev section

Im sorry if its in the wrong section but I understood the sticky to say that stock rom's are allowed in the dev section. Please close/move if necessary.

JBQ's post here - https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/android-building/-ymcoMuDAbA
It clearly says "There is nothing in AOSP related to Nexus 4"
On google+ I asked him: "Does that mean Nexus 4 not supported by AOSP?"
JBQ: Correct.
Me: But any plans to include N4 in AOSP later on?
JBQ: I can't comment about the future, sorry.

wtf is this nonsense!!!
it's a Nexus device just like the Nexus 7, 10, Galaxy Nexus, etc...y shouldn't it have AOSP?! :crying:
if this were true, then T-Mobile should have went ahead and added wifi calling to their version.

It's just really stupid from Google to say something like "I can't comment about the future."
There is a reason for it and I think it's quite logical to tell it. It wasn't a problem to tell why the N7 3G can't get AOSP support so why should it be a problem with the N4.

Just means they haven't released source for it yet, nothing more significant than that. Sometimes stuff isn't finished enough for release, or they have licensing issues with a driver or two. Google *always* eventually release though.

I think some of you are overreacting. It's not in AOSP, YET.

To clarify: Nexus 4 is not supported in AOSP at the moment: no source
files, no binaries.

Well, you can download AOSP, type a few commands and have something that boots a nexus device fairly quickly. I haven't looked too hard at it but assume there are some binary drivers that get thrown in there.
Google haven't release the build system for the N4 yet - OTOH you could probably hack one together yourself (none of the hardware on the N4 is new to android so presumably the drivers are out there somewhere).
All nexus devices are trivial to update via fastboot, and have builtin unlocks, and the N4 doesn't change that.
Fingers crossed it will be I need the AOSP browser haha

My guess is that they cant open source a lot of the qualcomm stuff for the modem and the SOC. The TI OMAP is a very open SOC, but they are basically the only ones in the business that do that so if someone want to tinker with GPU, SOC or modem drivers the nexus 4 will not be as open as the galaxy nexus.

Nexus vs Google Edition Phones

Hello
As you know the release of Samsung Galaxy S4 GE and HTC One GE offering the same flavour as Nexus users already have a taste for.
Do you think inclusion of the new type of camera app and various other features in these junks defeats the purpose of owning a Nexus? It is we who should get the update of even a minute bug squash or changes to any core app.
What would be the update cycle of these junk phones? Will the Android updates be prioritised for the Nexus or will it released for the junks together?
Sorry for being rude, as a loyal Nexus fan, I seriously hate these so called idiotic Google Edition.

I'm right there with you buddy. The reason I love Nexus devices is, if something goes wrong I can flash the factory image and everything is good again. No factory image from Google = no go for me.
Edit: Before I start to see "HTC has the ruu and Samsung phones use Odin to flash back to stock". I don't like one click methods. I want to fastboot flash all the images one at a time so I can see what's going on.

Its the same thing... You can see it happening step by step and what's occurring during each step.. That's silly if you ask me..
What turns me off is the simple fact that they are fake nexus devices.. While we will get Google updates almost immediately, those devices still have to rely on HTC or Samsung remembering to keep their thumbs out of their asses..

I sound like a broken record saying this since day 1. The OEMs have to put their proprietary drivers and kernels (firmware) into the image or the software wont' know how to communicate with the hardware. I guess if the OEMs were willing to release them to Google then I guess Google could handle the updates. Then you have to ask: why would Google take on that responsibility? Would the OEMs openly give Google those drivers in a day and age where anyone can sue anyone over anything because something looks similar to something else? None of that makes sense.
Yeah I'm kinda dissapointed... I want the latest and greatest on my N4 but still don't have it... Hopefully it's just a matter of days... Hopefully hours....

I don't understand what you are saying. What other "features" are you talking about? A red phase beam wallpaper? These phones haven't been released yet. My guess is the N4 will get those changes when 4.3 is released which may come before the GE phones are even released. Most likely lots of backend changes to the camera were needed to get it to work with the new driver hardware in the GE phones.
Once they launch will be the last time they have something the Nexus doesn't. The moment Google said that HTC/Samsung were responsible for updates and they weren't hosting/posting source means those phones will almost certainly be behind the Nexus.

That's the point, why are GEs getting the new camera app with new arc like settings and Nexus are left behind. Why is that "we" should wait for 4.3 and expect that the new camera would be included in that. It is a clear blow to the loyal Nexus owners who actually gets all updates to the Android first, even a small bug squash.
And talking about other features, I'm sure there would be some still hidden not available to the Nexus owners.

Hmm...wait and watch.
why are some people sooo sensitive, "my nexus should get this first" , "all others must wait" ...
look a little out of the box, these Google Edition phones are promoting stock android, whether they'll get updates parallel with the nexus or will join after a few days/weeks delay it doesn't matter. We all want more stock android options, and that's a step in the right direction, popularizing stock bloat-free android.
So, yeah, grow up and stop acting like samsung galaxy/iphone/etc.. blinded fanboys.
Can't believe you guys are complaining about a new camera app and live wallpaper. Nexus is just asop pure android 100% Google stuff... Doesn't mean Google owes us latest of the latest updates.

I'm pretty sure this also means one "Nexus 5 Android/Original Development" Section for all 3 carriers (ATT/TMobile/Sprint) and there won't have to be separation between ROMs. (maguro/toro/toroplus)

There will be at least 2 versions, D820 and D821, these will need different kernel/modem etc probably, but they should be similar and since its nexus it should be pretty easy to fix for both in either seperate or same file.
Also, this is a question, so no, it doesnt belong in Development.

I believe it does fit under [R&D], which is allowed. This is something that is useful to be discussed.
Even though you may have the "North America" LD-D820 and the "International" LD-D821, you will not have all the splintering from the carriers. With the gen3 Galaxy Nexus, it wa always, does this work on Toro or just Maguro, etc? ONE version of a custom ROM for all of U.S/Canada will be great.

I'm on Sprint, and being able to grab a flash the same .zip that AT&T users flash is something all OEMs should adopt.
Also even though officially it's not available for Verizon, it runs on the Verizon CDMA/LTE bands, meaning with some ESN tricks (that I won't mention), one could easily get an N5 working on Verizon.

I know that the reason it is not on here is because of I\O wear out on the flash memory.(Crappy chip)
This device can't handle the strain of ART.
I'm just a little irritated that google won't put it in the DEVELOPER!!!! options in there stock build.

I think an explanation is what we need. Obviously it was a technical issue, but like every technical issue, Google leaves us in the dark and leaves us to speculate. I'd also like to know why we can't get a kernal higher than 3.1 when nvidia actually makes a 3.4 kernal too.

Are there any double tap to wake or swipe gestures when screen off for the Note 4 et?

It's something I love using on my Nexus 5 (through ElementalX kernel) and on my OnePlus One. Curious if there's a kernel implementation on the Note 4 (Snapdragon version).

Ah, the tap to lock/unlock on the ElementalX Nexus 5 was amazing. I posted something like this a while back in a development thread, the developer said he would give it a shot but we haven't heard anything since.
bumping this up a few months later. just ran saw two reviews for Xnote and another ROM, neither seemed to have the feature implemented but i'm hoping it wasn't shown?
anyone? if i'm going back the lack of a response meaning those features don't exist, then i'm surprised. off screen gestures are a great way to skip tracks when the phone is mounted in the car. i know the long press volume button is a popular choice but that requires actual pressure.
