I have T-Mobile and am in US.... I really am interested in the Galaxy note and am wondering if it is compatible with T-Mobile's 3G/"4G"/HSPA+ network? I don't know what these frequency bands mean for compatibility ...
It will only work on EDGE speeds. It doesn't have the AWS frequency (1700, 2100) required for their 3G/4G network.

This is interesting. Is there anyways to confirm that Indian version will have "Penta" band?
I read that Note will launch in India on 3nd November. May be will have to wait to find out.

I'm having doubts about that article, SGSII was 34k when it was released in India. Galaxy Note has to top that.

i can't find anything to suggest any carrier in India uses the 1700/2100 bands needed for T-Mo (US) 3G to work anyway. so it must be about something else.

There are many bands for UTMS, and t-mobile USA is the only one that uses 1700.
Odds are, even if it is pentaband, it still won't support 1700. It might, but it's unlikely.

what about the modem.bin from the galaxy s2 4g on the tmobile phone
I've been researching a bit and it seems that the files are about the same on these phones, so I don't see why it wouldn't work. That being said, I am in no way an expert, but I hope someone with more knowledge will chime in on this and give us a concrete answer.

phone frequency band is hardware specific. if the crystal is not tuned for the frequency, theres nothing you can do to make the phone to accept it
I guess I'll have to wait on the Galaxy Nexus then. Thanks for dropping that bit of knowledge on us.

I think that for now is the best idea
I still want this and thinking hard about pulling the trigger and just buying. Has anybody bought this on tmobiles network yet.

You will only get Edge speeds.
There is no need to confirm anything.
Hardware IS HARDWARE.
I would not consider getting T-Mobile's version of this for the sole fact that they'll mess it up by putting a pair of 1.8 ghz Qualcomm chip in there to support their 42mbps network.
It will be garbage once that happens.
At this point, you either accept it as being Edge only on T-Mobile's network, or you don't get it altogether.
Yeah I know it only works on edge but if a million iphone users are using it then it might be usable but I kinda want a real world test of the Internet and not just specs since that's the only thing that's holding me back

You could ditch T-Mob, or not worth it? I would leave my carrier for the Note.
I made an inquiry about the Note coming to T mobile directly to someone I know at Samsung. He did get back to me and said they have figured a way around the present problem with the present chip configuration and will come out with a version that will be 1700/2100 compatible. BUT, not soon (2012) and probably will be the next version of this type of 5" + smart phone ....... So it is edge only on TMO for now..............
By the time they actually get to bring something like that out the quad core chips will be out and other makers might bring out something similar hopefully.

Currently I am using Dell Streak which actually was launched for AT&T. So I was only getting TMo's EDGE speed on my Streak. Which for me was not a big deal because I would only have to deal with slow speed while I am either away from home or work.
Some might find it silly, but what I did was, removed my data portion which was with the phone and actually got TMo's 4g hotspot. And I carried both, my Streak and hotspot always with me. Which for me works out alright.

As some of you may know, I have been trying to details the hardware inside the Nexus 4, and I may have made and incorrect assumption based on the fact we were told it doesn't support LTE. I believe the Nexus 4 may have and LTE capable basband chip.
The Nexus 4 uses a snapdragon S4 PRO APQ8064. This SOC doesn't have a baseband chip at all, you have to add a separate chip.
It is unknown what baseband chip is in the Nexus 4, but we can narrow it down. As can be seen on the android central home page very very clearly, the baseband version is as follows:
M9615a-CEFWMAZM-2.01700.27
The first part of that caught my eye. M9615a. For 10 points, anyone know what baseband chip is in the Optimus G? MDM9615

It may have the onboard chip, but doesn't it need a separate (a specific type of) antenna for LTE?
Wouldn't they have to test the chip's functionality at the FCC which would alert the tech writers who watch that stuff?

The reality is that LTE chips are significantly expensive to add to a smartphone, like in the $200 range. Part of The reason this phone can be offered for so low off contact is because it is HSPA only. I am also quite confident that they have to dissociate all of the radios inside the phone.

Is that expense attributed to the hardware? Seems a bit high to me, I would guess it is some sort of licensing fee to use that spectrum. if thats the case having it technically not supporting it would negate the fees while still possibly having the necessary radio for it. Completely speculating though.

Are you saying $200 just for LTE? Umm no. Research firms suspect it added $10 to the cost of the qualcomm chip for the iphone.
The baseband chip might support LTE (most likely it does), but the phone is probably missing the required amplifiers (LNA and PA) and filters to make it work in the LTE bands.

That sounds much more likely the case. I will say that if it's possible I guarantee the amazing development community on here will have it functioning very soon after they get hands on it!
Having read some more, the iPhone 5 uses the same chip, but has an additional chip paired with it. I couldn't find out if it was to do with the CDMA models though.

Also I would guess that qualcomm has locked out the functionality even if it is the same silicon. Common practice in the industry when you are selling a lower-end variant at a lower price. That could what the 'a' added onto the part number is for.
The second chip is the Qualcomm RTR8600 multi-band/mode RF transceiver for LTE bands, and s also found in the GSIII.

Yesterday, I played around with my N4 and installed some Custom ROMs. I decided to go back to
stock ROM and only found a 404-Error for the factory images on the official Google site.
Today, I wanted to check, whether the link is fixed. To my surprise, Google completely removed the
the factory image for N4. Not a single word about it. Look here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Anyone got a clue, why?

I believe there will be an update, too. If they remove and stop offering
prior versions due to an update, the prior version should have had some
grave bugs (e.g., missing december). I cannot spot any serious bugs
in the 4.2.1 release, though.
It's removed likely because it contains LTE code and it's not a LTE certified device.. Removing it is legally the correct thing to do, and then when they are ready, replace it with a version that better locks out the LTE functionality.

It has nothing to do with LTE code. The band 4 LTE functionality is built into the LTE chip on the Qualcomm board and has nothing to do with android. Anyways Google has license agreements to include LTE in android as it needs it for AT&T and Verizon phones. It wasn't because of these licenses they excluded LTE from the Nexus it had more to do with Verizon being a pain in the ass to deal with not to mention the added costs of having to add a CDMA chip to the device. It was just easier to go with GSM for now and include LTE in the Nexus 5 next year when more carriers actually have it.

Doesn't work that way, the FCC has to certify the device for LTE operation. You can't just grab some parts and start broadcasting in certain frequencies without a license and CERTIFICATION. The Nexus 4 is NOT a LTE certified device and therefore operating as such is illegal (at least in the USA).
Check out the certifications for any phone on FCC.gov and you'll see certs for WIFI, GSM, UMTS and LTE seperately if they have all of them. GSM in 850mhz can be fine but UMTS in the same frequency is all screwed up and causing interference which is bad and therefore the device wouldn't be certified for the USA (via FCC).

I found this article on the Nexus 4 and lte while trying to decide if it would be worth turning on lte on my N4. I am in Phoenix, Az, on T-Mobile and can confirm that lte does indeed work. We have all the required hardware on-board and have access to the older .33 radio needed to activate lte.

Accoriding to this from s4gru.com the FCC filing makes no mention of US GSM or WCDMA bands 850/1900. This is what it does say
In its press release earlier this week, Sprint calls its HTC One an "international" smartphone, and that could be interpreted to mean world roaming capabilities. The FCC authorization documents show no evidence of this, but they are not required to do so, since the FCC is a US authority. What is lacking, though, is any GSM 850/1900 or W-CDMA 850/1900. So, if the HTC One is world roaming capable, it will most likely be limited to GSM 900/1800 and band 1 W-CDMA 2100+1900.
