So it's all said. From time to time, my Lumia920 doesn't open any websites via IE. marketplace works, e-mail works, but websites just don't. Doesn't matter if I'm connected to 2g, 3g or 4g. And then everything returns to normal until this happens again.
Any suggestions?

Possibly an issue with your network provider? many of them use transparent web proxies to downsample jpeg images to save banwidth.

so for apparently no reason today my internet stopped connecting. When I go to connect it says -
Dialed: wap.cingular
it says underneath it there is no modem at the above number.
ummm.... I didn't change anything in my setting but for some reason it won't connect to the 3G network. Any ideas here or do we know whats going on?
thanks for the help.

OK check this
START/SETTING/CONNECTIONS/MANAGE EXISTING CONNECTIONS/PROXY SETTINGS
and make sure that there is not a Check in the box next to :
THIS NETWORK USES A PROXY SERVER TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET
This should do the trick I hope.
This always happens to me.
didnt work
no dice. its still giving me the same bounce back message that theres no modem at the above number. do i need to put a proxy server in the proxy server field? by the way this is a Tilt.
What program is trying to access the internet when this happens?
The same problem is occuring for me. I tried what Vol22002 suggested, but still can't connect. I was trying to access Internet Explorer.
Me Too - Atlanta
First thing this morning I tried to access the Internet with Opera and got the "Dialed: wap.cingular Cannot connect for unknown reason. ..." error. No recent changes to phone configs or software, worked fine after midnight last night. Power cycled and checked the usual stuff, still no data connection regardless of program.
Not Me Too Anymore - Atlanta
After not working from 0700 to 1050, I 'suddenly' have a working data connection. Go figure.
You'll probably find that this happens when your network is down. This happens very occasionally here and then I call my service provider to confirm this.

I would say that is the most common reason for the problem the OP is having.
the netowrk isn't down....
My dad's phone (not a tilt) is connecting to the 3G network completely fine. I can't access the internet through any program...internet explorer, opera, google maps, livesearch, the weather tab on my today screen...nothing. I'm at a loss right now.

So Disable the Proxy.
still nothing...with or without the proxy on.
I've been having problems with my data connection and phone service dropping out for the last 2 weeks even though I have changed nothing on the phone. I see an x by data connection and exclamation point by phone. I'm using Dutty's 6.1 official release and radio 1.58.26.20. Usually I can get back service by turning on and off airport mode, and the problem is very sporadic. Usually only when I really need the phone to work! Sometimes just switching between GSM and Auto mode for 3G will provide a temporary fix. I just tried disabling the HSDPA, and we'll see if that helps in a more permanent way. I wonder if AT&T is kicking people off of its network that are using HSDPA before it is supposed to be available. I called AT&T about the issue (w/o mentioning the cooked ROMs or HSDPA and they say I should return the phone for warranty but I don't want the hassle of restoring the old ROM. Any ideas?
is everyone posting here with issues from ATL? I am and have had the same, figured its just a radio issue and have been too lazy to change radios...for those that aren't lazy, i'd try that...
nope, I'm in Oregon. I'm of the opinion that AT&T has changed something about how they run their phone and data networks (perhaps in preparation for the 2nd gen iphone and HSDPA) that is randomly kicking people off their network.

There goes the iPhone messing with Smartphones again. First changes what a Smartphone should be. NOW messing with the network. Hulk Mad!
Nope its not just AT&T im experiencing the same problem over in the UK. Now my proxy is disabled and I know I have all the correct settings but still the error message "unable to connect to the receiving modem." It seems to have no pattern for this happening con we get correlation on what ROM's & radios everyone are using to see if its that
I've tried several radios and none of them have fixed the problem. Even when I have full bars in an HSDPA area, the first time I connect using Facebook or Opera or try to update weather or check my email, the icon shows I'm connected but apparently I'm not because I'm unable to download data. If I disconnect and then reconnect, it works perfectly the second time. If I keep it connected, it continues to work without a hiccup. I only have the problem when I connect for the first time after a few hours of being disconnected. I don't leave it connected all the time because it torches my battery. This quirk seems weird to me. I hope somebody has experienced this and can help me fix it.
I'm on AT&T and have the Tilt.
I have had this problem in certain areas. Near Dulles, VA, Greenville, SC, and a few other semi-major towns. I have no clue why it does this. I usually end up turning off 3G and going GSM only. Then I don't have that issue. Granted I loose the high speed connection, but it just has so much trouble in those areas. I have even tried multiple radios to no avail.
proxy server
If you have ATT, you need to remove the hidden proxy after disconnecting your data connection, then start an internet accessing program. The cab can be found under your windows directory.
Is there a way to force the phone to always be on hspda?
Normally it would switch back to umts after like 2 seconds after being done transferring data.
I read a lot of comics, and switching between comics takes a few seconds every time because it needs to switch from umts to hspda. When it for some reason already is using hspda it loads the next comic in a second. So it can save quite some time if you read comics a lot.
Also will it significantly drain more battery? I will of course set it back to standard when I don't use my phone.
Thanks in advance.
No you can't. It's the network that switches you over, not the phone.

Okay. Thanks for the quick and helpful answer.
is there a way to force a faster switch from umts to hsdpa?
when i hit a link in my browser i notice that it takes 3-10 seconds before umts switches to hsdpa.
The only thing you could do is have something constantly using the data connection so it never drops back to basic 3G.
You can set your phone to only use an hsdpa/umts connection by dialing *#*#4636#*#* and chosing WCDMA Only in the Phone Info section.
Edit: whoops didn't really read the OP. this doesnt help

You're right, I guess running a ping command from a terminal client will do just that. Atm I'm on gprs only since I'm home, but it seems to keep the data connection busy while it runs in the background.
To the battery thing: yes, it'll drain the battery much faster.
Hello,
I am relatively new to android phones in general so I apologize in advance if this is a common question (though a quick search didn't find anything). My question is this: Many times when I try to download something using the stock android browser (I have also tried dolphin browser with similar effect) the download fails, especially if it is a particularly large file (even more so when I try to do something else while its downloading). Is there any way to fix this or am I doing something wrong when it comes to downloading files? On top of that I have also noticed that sometimes when I try to download a file (lets say a .apk) it will say it downloaded the file but will have really only downloaded 10kbs of data or so, Obviously I get errors when trying to open them. In regard to the small file sizes, I know that the problem doesn't lie with the sites im trying to download from, because I have downloaded the exact same files with my computer with no issue.
Also one other quick question about how the Captivate (and android in general?) handles wifi and 3g. I've noticed that whenever I turn WiFi on and connect to a network the captivate refuses to send data through it's 3g connection. Normally this would be a good thing but there are certain apps that require a 3g connection. It also becomes a problem when I want my Captivate connected to my home network since the network isn't connected to the internet (stupid cisco NAC agent, if any of you have any Ideas on how to get that working through my router i'm all ears.). Simply put, I want my Captivate to be able to connect to the network to view files but to still be able to use the internet through it's 3g connection, is that possible?
Thank you in Advance,
Felipe Breyer Jesus
I dont have issues downloading files. But i dont leave the download screen until its done. Could be your issue. As far as wifi goes it shuts off 3g. Have you tried starting wifi. Once connected turn on airplane mode. Then shut off airplane mode? Might start 3g again?
Um.. some websites will not allow you to download using your phone due to some kind of crazy restriction that the web server has. I remember Design Gears had to tweak a web setting to allow people to download ROMs directly to their phones.
And.. I'm not an expert but.. by turning on wifi - 3g service will get stopped. You would probably have to do some serious hacking to get both to run at the same time... and that is IF you can even run both services at once.
You were saying you were having router issues as well... but do you have internet connectivity with your computer? If so you can always just download the files from your computer...?
Hi
A few days ago I started experiencing a strange issue that I just can't resolve.
Certain apps and accounts, i.e. Facebook, email, playstore, Google, Flip board etc. simply will not load/refresh/sync over mobile network. However, I can still browse the Internet using various apps (chrome, stock browser). With Spotify, I can stream music but am unable to download. There is no issue with the data connection as I am getting 'H' or '3g' and showing decent stats on Speed test. I have no issues at all over Wifi - everything works perfectly.
It's as if something is preventing apps from syncing/refreshing over the network but not affecting Internet access.
I have an unbranded device with a sim only Talk Talk deal.
Kitkat 4.2.2
4.12.401.11
I'm going to do a hard reset next but wondered if there was another solution.
Any ideas?

At work we had a phone that did not want to sync email on 3G. (Perhals other apps, we did not check.)
It turned out his phone was roaming on 3G, and the email client was set not to push mail when roaming.
I think the guy had bad signal on its own network on this location and so the phone was roaming.
He could still use his browser and many other apps without any problems.
Maybe it has nothing to do with your problem but I thought I should post it.
Because it sure has many things in common, also in this example on WIFI everything would work fine.
Kind regards, Stefan.
Thanks for that, unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a roaming issue.
I've just factory reset the device, completely wiped everything. Tries to log into Facebook and the same thing happened. Switches to WiFi and it worked straight away.
I tried forcing the mobile data to only use WCDMA. This actually seemed to resolve the problem temporarily and I was able to update Facebook however it soon reverted to how it was and I was unable to sync email, update Facebook or download on Spotify unless over WiFi.
I'm wondering if it's the Sim card or possibly a problem with the phone but I'm struggling to understand (albeit with limited knowledge) how this strange behaviour could be hardware related...
