Worth it? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im soon going to buy a galaxy s advanced and i want ur opinion about this phone,is it worth it?and im most intereseted about the battery life,im usualy a heavy usage user who surfs the internet and plays games.

If gaming is your priority, especially intense 3D games, then the Advance may not be the best device for you. It is not the youngest, after all.
But other than that, speed while browsing, switching apps and all that, is quite alright.
If you can get it on the cheap, go for it. Just don't expect (e.g.) Tegra 3 optimized games to run entirely smooth.

Why not Samsung galaxy s3 or Google nexus..
If you are a heavy user then you want a phone with excellent processor (pref dual core processor)..
You can check the specs of any phone & also compare..go to website gsm arena or download app genie from playstore..

Why not Galaxy Nexus then?
About same price, same hardware but much better software support.

All smartphones these days have variable battery life..
As it all varies from user to user & depending on how much activity one does on a phone > meaning some people only us phone for calls, texts, email just basic use so they will get excellent battery life.. On the other hand users with heavy useage doing so much listening to music, watching videos, playing games, browsing internet etc battery life wont be as good..(im a very heavy user and on my sgs 1 i get average daily battery life 11 hours, meaning i have to charge my phone at least once every day whereas with light useage i can get 48 hours (mind you though im on a custom rom & kernel which really helps a lot)..
Hope the above has given you some knowledge on battery life with android phones..

Should i get this phone? Advice pls!

Hi all. Im due an upgrade i summer. Im looking At this phone or the desire s. But is this phone buggy? Is the dua core really something special? Reviews on the 2x arent too good atm, the phone has many negative points abt it! It was like that with my tg01. I got it because it was the worlds first 1ghz phone. (just like this is the worlds first dual core) my tg01 has soo mamy bugs with it and it was rushed out. Is the 2x like this? I hear it is very buggy. I dont want to get another phone like my tg01 where i rely on custom roms for the phone to be usable.
So long story short, is this phone good? Is dual core something special? Or is speed more or less the same as single cores? Some ppl say that dual core is not needed with android.. Is this true?
Sorry for the quick messy typing (not on pc) and looking for some quick answers!
Cheers

anyone?
Its GPU is a bit ahead of the Samsung's... The CPU is far ahead. In Smartbench 2011 I score 4142CPU and 2953GPU and no samsung devices are even on the charts (with 1.4ghz OC but still stock is a lot better, and I would recommend installing a custom rom...). The call quality can be quite bad until you flash the baseband but after that it should be great. I have nothing bad to say about this phone, and when 2.4 comes out it will only get better (2.4 is rumored to come with real dual-core support)
Even though mine's been working quite well for past 2 weeks as my daily phone, there are also people who are quite fed up with theirs.
I hadn't read xda's user reviews prior to getting mine, but if I were to get another 2x now, I would wait for LG to provide a firmware update that significantly reduces the lock-up/reboot/battery drain issues. It's just to be perfectly sure that I will get one as stable (or more so) than my existing 2x.
I believe the battery drain issue can be fixed manually. just need a through check on whats running and how
thank you all for replies!
(xilw3r sorry i have run out if thanks!)
i
so most issues will be fixed with updates? but does the phone need to use a custom rom to be usable? is lg's ui good?
and is dualcore really much of a difference? do you notice a giant speed difference betweeen other android phones, or is it overhyped?
is battery life good on this? how long heavy use can it last under wifi?
im really stuck considering this and the
desire s
LG ui is laggy and a personal choice, i use lancher pro plus. heavy use and wifi battery lasts a few hours.
Battery doesnt last a day with low usage for me. 5-10% per hour on standby. With 3g on and mail twitter etc sync every 60 minutes. my old hero lasts longer with heavier use
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA Premium App
Can't comment much on the performance or UI as I moved over from Symbian. Though, it's much smoother in its user interaction than my son's LG Optimus One, but that's single core, 600mhz.
On days that I don't play much with it and actually use it like a typical work phone, the battery remains above 50% by 6pm. I think usually about 1 to 1.5 hour talk, hourly email auto-checks, less than half-hour of browsing and less than 20 SMSes. I am not a heavy user: I don't IM at all, nor GPS or game much. Just typical work-type usage.
Note: I switch off wifi when I am out of the house and rely on 3G for data connection. I find that keeps the battery lasting longer.

then you have some application/service/process running roque
Mine easily last 10 hours in standby with only 1% battery use (wifi and 3g and autosync enabled)
if you have 5-10% drain per hour on standby, you have some application/service/process not going to sleep as it should, using cpu and power, and preventing your phone from entering standby mode.
Thats not a problem of the phone - but a software issue that you as user need to investigate and solve
with low usage I easily get 2 days running - with moderate use 1½ - and with heavy use 1 full day.
No strange processes running here, spent a few days of testing with different roms aswell drain still exists
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA Premium App
thanks fir responses! i was gonna say 5-10 drainage in an hr is bad! is the a common problem? i heard abt these battey issues!
Battery usage:
16h after power was unplugged, I still have around 40-45% of battery. Low usage (WiFi/3G on, a few calls, gTalk, but no email sync activated).
ROM: 10b

I relly want this phone but im not sure about it anymore.. i read so many many many big bugs about it, and seems that almost EVERYONE is having them..
optimus one was a great phone with dew bugs, why cant they make the same quality on a HIGHER END handset lol :S ?
If you look through the forums of any phone, there will be a lot of people talking about how they have some sort of problem.
Nexus S
yea but o2x is A LOT, mean u have 60 page thead about reboot issues.... that doesnt look too promising ..
You can always return it if you have too many problems
Nexus S
The stores have em already, G-slate and G2x. Played with both today, I know the manager in store but before somebody make a dumb comment pertaining to that, aint nuttin top secret and no special info was bestowed on me because of who I know. The stores just have them stocked already. The slate is nice though, good build, nice size and weight, kinda reminded me of the ipad but lighter. Honeycomb makes our phones look like gameboy colors.

But the G2x was also better than my expectations! By far blows most of the others out of water.

Have you tried the current custom kernels?
I am using SpeedMod 3-9 and it has an excellent battery life - on heavy usage (internet, emails, ebook reading, messaging and phone calls) I reach the end of the day with at least 30% left - and I am talking about heavy use - around 4-5 hours.
For me this is more than enough.
But I am using "ondemand" CPU governor. If I change to "powersave" the battery consumption will be even lower, I think.
My suggestion to you - give it a try - our beloved Note is one of the best in battery tests - and with these tricks it is even better!

You even can reduce power by using a single collar wallpaper.
For black take a picture in bl&white in the lowest resolution with the lens covered with your finger.
You can select this picture as background.
If you like an other single collar you can do it with a paper of your choice

really ? i'm using that for one day, with heavy use of emails, texts, and watching CCTV in my office with 3G always + wifi = end up 10% in 6 P.M from 7 A.M. and one more thing, i love live wallpapers, so i use Koi wallpaper, and auto brightness.. i thought that with 2500 MAh battery it would last more than 1 days of heavy use... you know, i seldom use that in my house, but very heavy user in the office, no games.
bump, how about this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257497 ? more kernels = more choices for users
there is already a ton of custom kernels for the note, Surely you havent tested them all ?
99% of battery drain is down to the user ! anyone will confirm this, You should look a bit deeper into your configuration.
start from a full wipe, test several kernels and try all of the Governors & Schedulers, Use something like 'better battery stats' for precise information of which apps use most power, fiddle with settings like auto-sync, wifi off when sleeping, data network deactivated when not in use ect ect.
1 day battery life is about the average for the average user, This is a powerful device with a massive screen and 2 CPU's, you cant expect the stock battery to last forever, Maybe consider an extended battery ?

For the usage you described, it seems that no modern smarphone would handle it - maybe the Moto Maxx, with its huge battery - but it is not in the league of the Galaxy Note.
But, instead of going to an extended battery solution, which would make your Note heavy and thick, you could go for a "spare battery" solution. And you can find plenty of good quality batteries+charger for less than $20 on Ebay - this should solve your problems entirelly.

Well you have said it all and given your own answer in your post - you are a heavy user and there are no scripts on xda that will give you additional battery unless you bring 2 or 3 stock batteries with you.
Extended battery is a bit too big in my opinion and will make the Note really too bulky, but if you don't mind the size this is definitely the way to go to have more juice by the end of the day.

[q] getting the 4x...help solicited

First of all, I earnestly apologize if this question is answered before. I am seriously thinking of getting this cell. I am from India and it is an absolute steal now for a quad core and 720p screen now. Plus I love the Optimus UI the most.
I need a few inputs from you fellow users.
i. How is the battery life of the phone? With moderate usage (music in headphones, few snaps, half an hour of gaming) will I get a full day?
ii. Is there any commendable ROM for this phone? like MIUI or CM?
iii. How is the performance? Is it comparable to the other Quad Cores like the ONE X or the S3??
iv. Any word on Jelly Bean update? (leak, official, custom --> doesn't matter)
BTW, am expecting some "Answers" and not flamings. please...
awaiting answers.

Well, apart of the camera, that for some people is enough, the phone is very good.
We still don't have custom ROMs but ICS 4.0.3 is a smooth and fast OS in this device.
The size is the ideal, specially using GPS, to see TV or just replay your own videos, or to see web sites.
Battery is good, of course that depends on how each one uses the phone. Miracles finished long time ago...
The shape is nice, not a pebble, not a brick, like Italian cars
The relation quality/price is one of the best too...
But like everything, some love it, others hate it... perfection don't existe.

You should go ahead and buy the device. It is absolutely worth the price. In fact, looks like until Optimus L9 arrived in India, 4X had good/decent review on flipkart.
In my case, the battery last for 1.5 days approximately (few calls, sms, games, WiFi-internet browsing, etc). As others have said, if you are a heavy user, you have to charge is every day. I guess any smartphone with continuous usage will drain the battery fast.
1. My battery life is great, i can get trough a day of use( wich includes: 30-60 min of gaming, about 30min here on xda and in the browser, and some light checking on FB and Twitter) with half the battery. But i hear; that if this is used as a workers phone, it will just last a day. Having a charger is smart.
2. There is no custom roms whatsoever. But we seem to have someone working on a rom based in 2nd init
3. I HAVE gotten over 16000 in antutu benchmark once. Witch is conciderably higher that the highest one x score ive seen( havent really cared that much) and it is just slightly weaker that the S3. Games run smooth as googles project butter.
4. The long-waited Jb update seem to come in the period 8-10th january. Howewer it may come as late as early feb

[Q] LG Optimus 4x HD(TEGRA 3) vs Motorola Atrix HD

Which one is better in real world gaming/calling/battery life/3g brwsing/gpu/cpu performance customs roms, more easy to overclock best quality phone?
Atrix HD's battery is crap. As far as gaming, some non-tegra games might run better on the Atrix because of the optimization with Adreno GPU's. Take for example MC4. It has hiccups when i play it on my O4X, but it is buttery silky smooth on my Nexus 4. There are no custom roms available for the O4X because of a locked bootloader...therefore no way to overclock yet. Unless you're a kernel dev that could help in that category.
If you're looking to buy a phone and you development is a big deal for you, then go with the Atrix HD. If you don't care about development and just want a solid phone that you can count on, then the O4X is a wiser choice. I honestly don't feel like i have the need for overclocking or custom roms. Just like my Nexus 4. There are tons of custom roms and mods available for it, but i prefer to run it bone stock but with a custom kernel.

How`s battery life on O4X? and cpu performace tegra 3 vs "krait" S4?and for updating android which one has more support for updates?, what you mean with solid? and what happens if in the future O4X doesnt support new Android systems? bcuz it has locked bootloader so I cant install new custom roms?
Battery life on the O4X is decent. I get a whole day's worth with medium use. As far as Tegra 3 vs Q Krait S4 im sure there are plenty of video comparisons on youtube you can check out. As far as updates are concerned, since Motorola has been bought by Google you can count on the Atrix HD to receive its updates faster than the O4X. And because the O4X has a locked bootloader, there will be no custom roms to fulfill your flashaholic needs. That is until we get some devs who are willing to work on the phone. But until that time comes, if you're a flashaholic...go for the Atrix HD.
When i said a solid phone, i meant that the phone doesn't have any bugs or anything...so you can always count on it on being available for you to use.

what about gamming and battery life?
Battery life: i tested, and my phone will easily standby 500+ hours(in airplane mode, with 3g activated, no data: it failed after the half. About 250-280 hrs.) When constantly gaming Dead Space (only game i tested the actual time on) it lasted 2 hrs 07 minutes on full performance mode. Again with no lag whatsoever(dead space wont lag on a optimus 2x or ever weaker phones though)
I did test on a older version of Counter Strike aswell(i found it the apk on my pc. Cant remember where i got it from) - and it did start lagging when i took it on a match with me and 15 AI`s (that is, 15 guys controlled by the phone) there my battery lasted 3+ something hours (from 100%) before i got the 5% warning.

Could probably point out that while the battery life while gaming is a bit short - when I've tested it, it's been on average a full hour better than the competing quad-core phones when running the same game side by side.. not completely sure why that happens when comparing it to other tegra 3 phones, though.. Assuming it has something to do with the scheduler policy, along with the slightly larger battery, or something of that sort. Aside from that.. a snapdragon setup uses more power on average, and idles on a massively higher power-draw. Always been a problem with those soc designs - that the antennas and modules need to be powered on completely when there's power on the phone at all. Btw - really did manage to have the 4x run 11 days while online on the gsm network once. Didn't use the phone much - but it really is easy to get the phone to last three-four days if you don't run anything heavy. And by heavy, I don't mean just editing photos, or having the screen lit up, or something like that. I mean something that constantly runs on full processor load.
Power-draw while just playing back music and movies as well is top class. You don't read that in the reviews for some inexplicable reason.... having to do with Engadget being in love with Apple, to the point where they hate on anything that threatens to dethrone their precious princess or something. But it's still the case. This tegra 3 chip with an ips screen/gorilla glass, slim chassis w/replaceable battery/memory card slot - is a very neat design.
What? The power draw when playing music is the only thing that let me down when using this phone! Even my old xperia x8 could do better!

I meant compared to other modern smartphones
Could put it this way - if you want support for lossless formats, dynamic bitrate, ogg, that sort of thing - then this is the most effective system by far. Since you have power management that is transparent to the OS, and so on, so you can use existing media-players with support for the arm set and get good performance on low clocks/only the companion core, etc.

Tested; none of the (free) media players on google play could be run on the companion core. They seem to always run on the 3rd(core2) 1.5ghz core. Putting the freq at a stable 1.1ghz when screen off. And pumping to the full 1.5 when the screen is on...
Not very power saving...

Hm.. The ones using the arm 7 vfp packs should avoid that. Bsplayer does, at least.. The internal player as well. Same codec pack. The Spotify app actually avoids running on the other cores as well. That instruction set class is not unique for tegra3 either, so it should be fairly commonly used by now.

The only other than the stock battery known to me, must be the mugen powers battery extender-something like that. And that will make your phone look like a brick.

Very Happy Now we have unlocked BL
I came from HOX as well
There isn't a lot of difference really, screen is a bit better on LG and I like the design more. Feels like a premium quality phone to hold.
We Need More Devs though!!!
Gaming will be just like HOX, depends on the kernel and also optimisation of the game ie crappy Gameloft coding
In general, yes but I would like to see much better battery life - especially sleep. My GTab 7.7 can idle for up to 20 days but this phone can only idle for 2 days. Sure, different battery size and all that but it still should hit 4-5 days of pure idle.
I'd also like to see less heat and another thing that can't be helped is that the screen (when tapping stuff) doesn't feel as solid. I feels a bit hollow when you touch the screen when typing but it is accurate and quick so it's not a bug deal.

Battery 40 C ,, Normal 25 C .
CPU 65 C ,, Normal 40 C . Especailly when it arrives 1500MHz (in single core only) .
Rebooting heats up phone very quickly higher than anything else .
About gaming , yes it lags in many games .

The gaming could be better but with the Tweak of initgpu It's Awesome but Gaming still eats battery.

Screenshots on the ROM and taking a logcat while you get force close on PA preferences
not so happy
Hi, 3 days ago I bought my Optimus 4x and I'm kinda sad for a few questions.
I'm using the latest version of the Rom (original jelly bean) and I saw that the unit gets hot and the battery is not have a good performance. I tested the battery with Antutu battery tester and came to drop 1% every minute.
I really want to find a solution to my problem. I'm thinking of selling my phone and buy a Galaxy S3.
Sorry for my bad english.

I am absolutely happy with this phone .. It has many advantages more than disadvantages .. Thanks LG for this great phone
LG 4x HD its Amazing
Hi all, i'm happy with this phone, i had a SIII but verizon version... no luck with GSM Networks (3g) in Mexico... now i have 4ox with bootloader unlock and CM 10.1 4.2.2 then its amazing... very fast.. still needs development but i think that's come alone in a few months.... gaming no bad and 3g its great...
for me not really , because of battery drain 1% 1 hour in idle, \
i have try to delete all unused app and disable fastdormancy and disable auto configure mms setting event
what i see is the stock developer is bad
talking about stock rom ..
as far as i changing many region rom, the best is open Europe the gsm and data signal are more stable then asia rom
but all stock rom are drain battery 1% in 1 hour in idle mode,
anyone have same problem ?

..I had my 4x run 11 days on mostly idle to get to the yellow line once. That's with contact to the mobile network. When the battery on the 4x is less than half the size of that in the tab7. 5100mAh vs. 2100mAh or so.
But yeah, you're right. LG just hasn't optimized the device all that well. And on a stock setup, with the standard apps (that will keep preventing the phone from dropping to idle speeds), you'll be lucky to get over 2 days on standby.
Pros:
- Very clear, sharp and big 720p IPS screen
- Battery (at least for me)
- Shape (it fits in hand really nice)
- SD card slot (up to 64gb) unlike HOX for example
- 1 GB ram
- Tegra 3 quad processor (plays 1080p HD videos without problems, great for multitasking, nice performance also in games with some tweaks etc.)
- Solid 8MP camera and 1080p recording
- Unlockable Bootloader + CM support and also other devs are starting to work on our phone now :victory:
- Nice price/performance ratio IMHO (I bought mine for 250€ which I think is kind of cheap for a phone with such specs)
- Removable battery
Cons:
- Heating (Tegra 3 is based on 40 nm technology)
- Needs some tweaking for gaming (mostly for more high end games)
- A bit long charging time
So with 1 word, YES I am a happy and proud owner of this phone.
