I apologize in advance for not researching this properly myself (in fact I'm usually doing stuff like this for other people), but I am simply overwhelmed by the plethora of information and unlimited posts of ROMs, OC kernels, and all that. I am no longer android retarded; That's for sure.
But I have a busy weekend here looking for an apartment and moving, and I just don't have the time (really) to sift through all this stuff! There's just too much! But in the meantime, the lag I am experiencing on the Hero is pissing me the **** off and I know it can be better, even "snappier" at 768.
I was hoping you guys would be able to give you opinion at the very least on this. I really wish you could just flash once and have everything set-up, but that would be too convenient. I would have to make sure the kernel doesn't break functionality, that the kernel actually works with the rom in the first place, flash the kernel, find a matching wifi module to match the damn kernel, flash the damn module... you get the picture.
So please guys, help me out here! I AM overwhelmed in every sense of the word, and I need your help.
1. Opinions on most stable ROM with most features.
2. Recs for an OC Kernel that will work with it!
3. The wifi module to go along with it.
4. Anything else I'm forgetting...
Thanks in advance and I apologize again for not doing it on my own. I just can't...lol.

May the time always be 4:20... wherever you are.
Word - subscribed. Just bought a Hero for my gf, trying to get it proper, but man, I used to do this with HTC WinMo phones, and this is the exact reason I went to iPhone platform - too much reading, maintenance, reflashing etc (read: TIME) to get the phone to work the way you want. So, I opted to just lose any choice or control over the matter and have a phone that works fine enough and has good app ecosystem
But, I want to get her phone at least fast and stable (most important), I think I'm throwing 2.1 with the .6 update, and will just downgrade to root in the future if we really need wifi tether.
If there is some good info in this thread on which ROM and which kernel with minimum hackish patches etc to make it all work, then I'll go to that! I'm hoping someone just finds a root exploit for .6 since it seems there are some good lag fixes in that update as well.

So is the method to root on 2.1 .5 version and then install this ROM over the top (which keeps your root)?
yep, you got it
Wow..
So I finally got some time to do even minimal research and came across these:
ZenHeroFX 2.0 ROM
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731951
Darchstar's Kernels
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705074
I wiped everything (including battery *whatever*), flashed the rom, flashed the 768MHZ kernel, flashed the % battery meter, and the 2.0 update for the ROM. I never expected it to boot the first time... BUT IT DID! Holy ****! Really?
Now, after setting frequency with SetCPU this thing flies! I cannot describe the difference. Holy ****-BALLS! Finally no lag at all, not even at the keyboard. And no overheating. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect flash!
DrunkenOstrich: This is the perfect setup for you! It worked the first try for me with no issues at all. Just follow the directions step-by-step and you will be good! Also, don't trip out on how long it takes to boot or if it's slow at first. Give it a few minutes to sync up and everything will be badass.
God I feel like such a noob after proofreading this post. lol.
wow... thanks
Ok... thank you so much for doing this. I am in the same boat as you as far as time to research everything goes. I had rooted my 1.5 hero last november and recently upgraded to 2.1. Just reverted to .5 so I could root but was totally lost as far as what ROM would keep me as close to stock as possible.
My goals were to find a ROM that allows me to 1)remove some bloatware, 2) overclock, 3) possibly wifi tether and 4) further improve battery life. I just didnt want to lose any functionality since I really love the hero. Only thing is since this upgrade, it's a slug. OP, Do you think using the ROM/Kernel pair you installed I'd be happy considering my goals?
there's one good way to find out. if you don't like it you can always do a nandroid.

Thought I would get more of a performance boost... installed SetCPU and tweaked some settings and its a little better

Hey guys. Just got a captivate a few days ago and I love it except for the gps. I was just wondering if the leaked build of froyo improves the gps at all and if its worth updating before they release the official one. If so, where can I find the latest version of the leaked build? Thank you for any help.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
The leaked Froyo does not necessarily improve on GPS because many people don't have issues where many people do. Give it a shot and search different methods of changing your LBStestmode settings to see what works. Second, for me it was worth installing as 2.2 offers stuff you cant have on 2.1 such as the newer Gmail, flash 10.1 and other goodies. It is faster as well. Search the threads in the Dev section for different ROM's and how to flash. Ask questions about flashing after doing exhaustive searching because you will be able to find most answers in those threads.

Cognition 2.2 Beta 9.1.1
Grab this and never look back.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I'm kinda on the fence about this as well. I should be getting my Captivate tomorrow and I have been doing a crap ton of research in the past few days. Everything I have read points to either the "Official Leaked Froyo 2.2" or the newest "Cognition v2.2 BETA9.1.1". My only concern is the known issues that are listed on the Cognition website...
MMS won't work if you have "(" or ")" in your phone numbers
Contact groups sometimes opens the wrong group, you can fix this by replacing it with an I9K contacts.apk, but then you lose AT&T contact syncing
No Voodoo voices, supercurio is working on this (first boot will take awhile, be patient!)
Everyone has the same device_id

Is this true with both builds listed or just with the Cognition v2.2 BETA9.1.1? I'm also completely new to Android being that I am a fomer iPhone junkie. So any help, how-to's, or info would be appreciated. In all honesty I was going to start here, youtube.com/watch?v=S9YnSVvfHpQ and if that wasn't successful go ahead and try Cognition. I'm just the type of person that likes to have things working properly and fast, like everyone else.
And for those wondering why I have been a member for over two and a half years and this is my first post, I have usually been able to find what I need and not had to ask questions.
I would point out that DesignGears has a perfectly rockin' cognition for eclair too. My first flash was 2.1.4 and it was amazing compared to stock eclair.
nothing really helps the gps, you either got it good, or not. (much research into that opinion btw.)
Cog 8.1+ is the shiz atm.
There's a couple of other froyo flavors also. I wouldn't go back to eclair at this point.
If nothin' else, it's a crap ton of fun flashin' and figuring stuff out. I'd do it just for that.
Not sure on MMS. I had no problems with it, but my numbers were already formatted without the parenthesis.
The ability to do these type of things is what lead me to the Android platform over the iPhone OS, it's just too locked down even with it being jailbroken IMHO. I'm just basically looking for a point of refferance I suppose. Basically the things to do and not to do to the phone you know. For me it's more of a challenge because I'm learning something new. I don't know if it's because I'm not looking in the right places or what but it seems like step by step guides are hard to come by regarding this stuff.
unless you use the i9000 ROM with captivate kernel, all Captivate Froyo builds are based off the captivate beta of Froyo.
It had a enough bugs that i rolled back to 2.1. Don't get me wrong, it is stable - but I figure i will wait for a more bug free beta to be the basis of my Froyo jump.

Not so much. You just gotta be patient and diligent. There's a couple of gems laying around but they are usually in the middle of a thread. The cognition thread for example. It's a beast to keep up with but given time you can digest most of what you need there. And there are plenty of links throughout that will clarify or intimidate as your experience and skill allow. Trouble is there's a TON of junk because people get impatient, or lazy I guess. Same questions, over and over.
I came to the captivate from a blackberry. Not much customization goin' on there. So as a stone noob, I read the cognition thread from post 1. All of it. I am a pretty confident android operator now. And I can't read nor write a line of code. In any language!
And you can too. Get busy, Grasshopper.
If you live on campus or rely on some sort of enterprise WIFI then go to froyo. Using eclair I could NEVER connect to the wifi at my school. It would say that I was connected of course but no data would transfer.
I switched to Froyo and haven't had problems since.
Also, my GPS is rockin!
alphadog, what "bugs" did you have when using Froyo? And what you mentioned is a lot of where my confusion comes into play, "kernals and ROMs" are like greek to me and I have no idea what they are or what the difference is between the two.
Sulphur, thanks so much for the advice. I'm gonna go check out the Cognition thread now and see what I can dig up. That's really what I needed, just a starting point. I'm thinking as of now I will go with the latest Cognition build for a bit and see how that goes.
DirtyRasa, no campus here but I do rely on wi-fi pretty heavily. I use it at home all the time to cut down on charges to my bill for data usage, so that's good to know. Just curious though, are you using the leaked Froyo or the Cognition build? And if you have had both which one do you prefer?
cybercowboy, wasn't trying to jack your thread or anything but I was in search of the same info as well.

More power to you. I see tons of people on here less than a month with hundreds of posts more than me.
-->Back on topic. YES go with Froyo! There are many options available, but for noobs, i'd reccomend the either a DG ROM or the leaked and tweaked.
Thats no problem mindburn. The more information the better. I actually flashed to the leaked froyo last night and so far so good. Gps is still horrible. I think im gonna try the cognition build tonight and see what I like better. Ill let you know.

Thanks man, almost sounds as though you are one step ahead of me actually. I get my phone tomorrow and I was going to actually try the leaked first and then cognition. Let me know how things turn out for you and I will in return do the same.
So I got the phone yesterday and let me say, when I got it out of the box I knew I was going to like it. This damn thing looks sexy as hell! Anyway, 10 minutes after I got it I had successfully upgraded to the leaked Froyo and rooted the phone. Everything is going fine and I haven't had any problems thus far. It is at times a little buggy but I have learned that if I kill some of the tasks, the speed seems to improve. I thought about try Cognition today but when I load it up, I've only got the odin.exe, PDA.tar, & PIT.pit. Do I have to have CSC & ETC file mentioned in the program as well? Also, what exactly are these things, I didn't have to do anything like this on the stock Froyo.
U should of done DG's AOSP beta 3! That's what I'm rocking and have had it for almost a month and its amazing! I wanted to use cognition but I read on ppl saying they had bugs or it just wasn't stable for them. But to each their own! Unfortunately when I last checked DG closed the thread on that ROM. Glad to know u got froyo going! I made the switch from an iPhone jailbroken to the captivate and it's amazing! I'm still new to android but u just gotta read everything and their r so many ppl who are willing to help!

I been obsessed lately, trying to find something that works with our new D4's. I flashed Arctic's VZW rom after rooting my phone and....it works! I have tested SMS/MMS, GPS and phone calls with no issue. The only think that i have noticed right off the bat is that the keyboard does not light up, which I am assuming is because the necessary drivers obviously were not in place for the Razr. With this being said, I would thikn CM7 as well as other Razr roms WILL work with our phones. I'm glad we have at least something now.....

But hey, we're getting closer!!!
I also flashed the Eclipse ROM for the Razr and that is working well also. Just follow the directions on skipping the Android initial setup.

If its anything like using the VZW 6.11.748 Razr Roms on 6.12.173 Razr then I believe enabling bluetooth will cause a reboot. Could you try that?
Also I am working with someone to bring Arctic to 2.3.6... it sounds like it would probably work better on D4 too.
You are 100% correct. Bluetooth causes a reboot. Seems to be a common problem. I am looking into it still and I edited my OP

This is because 2.3.6 introduced a new bluetooth, but the Rom is based on 2.3.5 that's why it won't work.
I am very interested in how this works out. The new EclipseRom and IC3Razr may work on it too... I will be trying them when I get my Droid 4 tomorrow (I hope)

I understand people being hesitant in trying this out but I would not waste anyone's time making up a lie that it works just to have people mess up their phone. No sir...I dont think until we get one specifically for our D4 are we gonna see that. It should just be a matter of a system file from our dump and throwin it in whatever rom we're using. The reason the Razr roms are working is because the hardware is identical with the exception of the display. The issues we are having with Bluetooth, Market and some other apps has nothing to do with the hardware of our devices. It's because most of the Razr roms were not created with the latest OS update , which all of the D4 owners have. My knowledge is limited with dev'ing but if anyone else wants to chime in on this, please feel fee....

I think its really important when you are working without the safety net of a full XML.zip restore file, that you make it very clear with extremely dire warnings that nobody should use these ROMs until there is a way to recover properly. Average users should NOT attempt this under any circumstances and by posting about it here, you need to be responsible because you will create a wave of bricked devices. This has already started, if you note the post in the main forum briteyes has bricked her phone loading this ROM.
I know this is a very unpopular opinion, but somebody has to come out and say it, sorry.

Very wise words cellzealot. I've seen to many people messing up their phones right now and not all of them were rom related, removed to much while getting rid of bloatware.
I'm holding off even rooting mine until there is rsd recovery files as a backup before I take the plunge. I know the rooting part is safe, just don't feel like unlocking the gates of trouble without a backup plan.
If it wasn't for people testing the limits, development would be a much slower process. I was one of the first to use the root, toy with freezing bloatware and test a bunch of the root-required apps. It is obvious that ROM flashing is a risky process, even with a restore, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done.
I am also amused by how many people have said "I don't want to root until..." since the root has been entirely stable since day 1. If you can't trust yourself to be responsible with the root abilities, why even bother posting right now when everything is in the alpha stages for this phone since it came out less than 2 weeks ago.
This is the DEVELOPMENT forum... testing and risk are implied for anything that gets posted here.

The root is stable, but the people rooting are NOT.
You see the posts of people deleting their own /system/apps/ folder?
CellZealot is very right in what he saying and it did have to be said. Without fastboot files and heck even without a factory-style cable it is not safe to be a crack flasher on this device.

People are never happy..... like you said it's a developmental forum. If they aren't somewhat knowledgeable with flashing roms or how the process works, they should read up before saying anything at all. This is all free and people put hard work into developing things. If you want a disclaimer, go to Best Buy.

Hello. I will be receiving a Droid 3 as a warranty replacement tomorrow. It comes with ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) pre-installed. I have been searching, and cannot find a way to root the Droid 3.
I am hoping I missed it. If someone can point me to the tutorial for rooting the Droid 3 with ICS, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

Where did you hear it will come with ICS...? Because it won't.
I was told this by the Verizon rep. It is a warranty replacement. he specifically said it has ICS on it. No, I am not mistaken. Maybe he was?
Even if it doesn't, I have been unable to find a tutorial for rooting the Droid 3.
I can assure you that it will not be arriving with ICS, I'm sure he must have been mistaken. It will most likely be running Gingerbread 2.3.4 with the 5.6.890 system software.

If you get a phone w/ics system dump before anything else please, if you need a hand lots of people here will help (or on irc) but since moto still has the d3 listed as "evaluating" for ics and haven't even started working on a build I would say the rep is more than likely mistaken. Hopefully not but if moto had an ics build for the d3 I imagine we would have heard about a soak or something. As for your question I would probably try the root for d4 and if that didn't work check out what they're using on the nexus etc
If you do get ICS please tweet Hash. We really could benefit from it.

We would still have a locked bootloader and the same kernel issues though. I'd put money on the rep being wrong, but I'd like to be proven wrong.
so what version of android did you end up getting on the d3?

You folks were right. He was wrong. It has 2.3.4.
It runs pretty fast, compares well to the DX2. I wanted CM ROM on it, but none are completely working. Camera has issues GSM FCs and so forth. I just wish my DX2 would work. Haven't used a physical keyboard in a while either.

I bought my D3 FOR the keyboard. I came from an enV touch and the thought of a touchscreen keyboard that wasn't 100% perfect made me shiver. Looking back, I would definitely have gone with a SGS II. I didn't know anything about the D3's bootloader being locked and the full touch screen is definitely worth the unlocked bootloader. That being said, I still love the keyboard. It's better than any I have ever used.
I don't hate my Droid 3. It runs my ICS roms rather smoothly and the only thing that I wished worked is Google Chrome. I use the camera but I found that I have not wanted to use the video recorder since switching; even if it DID work.
If you want a CM ROM that is pretty stable, I'd recommend 7.2 found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308924
It's a bit more stable than CM9, though it still has some bugs. Stable enough for a daily driver in my opinion.
My d3 is alright but if I was sent one now with any option of sending back either for a different phone or terminate a contract(within 30 days or whatever and setup a new one) I would jump @ the chance, just because its a little old, 1g ram would be nice but imo it's like dual core phones, 1 core is wasted 90% of the time, upgradable to ics would be very nice too, custom kernel would be nicest though(htc,lg etc etc). I guess what I'm saying is its decent but I wouldn't buy one now.

I'd say droid 3 is all about the keyboard. Without the keyboard, there would be many better phones. Phones with 1GB ram, unlocked bootloader and a better screen.
However, I'd rather have a keyboard than have those ^ things without a keyboard .
It seems to run faster, and more smooth than my Droid X2. It's ugly though, and it will take some getting used to a physical keyboard again. I have it rooted, radiocom hacked. I want to tweak the camera, but the thread is confusing me a bit as to which zip to use, or which edits to make to build.pro and the XML file. I would prefer to edit rather than install a zip as I don't really want a bootstrap on the phone.
App Brain is making me frustrated though, since Fast Web Installer will not log in.
So far, I am loving this.
Another heartbreak. If D3 doesn't gets ICS by July, I'll let it go.

Hey guys! My contract from verizon is running up and I desperately need a new phone; but I still have unlimited 4G and I'm not going to let Verizon contract me into another phone and lose it! HAH What a joke, 2gb a month for the "cheapest" option? No thank you. So I went ahead and ordered a mint condition Droid 4 for a nice price It should arrive this Friday
I'm upgrading from a Thunderbolt (the old girl served me well) and I cannot, and I can't stress this enough, cannot WAIT to have a physical keyboard back. I used to to be a Blackberry Curve and Tour owner back in the day before I made the switch to Android.
My question to you guys is, what ROM should I run? I want a full experience, so no non-working mechanics so I will be staying away from the broken camera roms, at least til they're stable. Also, what other things should I know before getting my new phone?
Thanks, and I hope to be part of the xda droid 4 owning family in a couple of days

If your looking for bug free myfishbear's Eclipse ROM is probably the way to go. As for other things to know, you will need to root and install safestrap recovery in order to install ROMs. I recommend the Droid 4 Utility ICS Only. That will allow you to root and also has a function to install safestrap.
And welcome to the D4 forums!

Thank you! I was seriously expecting responses like "buy a better phone" or something. Quick question; do I have to flash radios like I did with the Thunderbolt? If I get stock gingerbread OS, should I upgrade to stock ICS and then root? Or will it not make a difference?
Thanks!

I love my D4 You do not need to flash radios or anything like that. If it still has GB on it I would go ahead and update to ICS first and then root. That way you don't have to mess with root keeper or anything like that.
Thanks for the reply again! I will upgrade to ICS then root
It'll be here tomorrow, can't wait!
I suggest rooting stock and freezing a bunch of the garbage ICS apps that you will never use.
Fwiw, I've recently bought a used D4 for the same reason
(High 5!) And have not installed a new rom. I've just rooted, mainly so I could freeze a few things and use rom toolbox's ad blocker. Not to take anything away from the devs who do great work, but personally I'm totally happy with the (rooted) stock ICS. I know JB is supposed to be snappier, but I'm not seeing any sluggishness anyway. Welcome to the D4 world-the keyboard is AWESOME, really.

I'd prefer to install Eclipse rom because there is no bloat to freeze and it's really fast. Also, it gets rid of a few spy tools Moto and Verizon placed on the stock roms.
Moreover, when using safestrap (which is needed to flash a rom) you don't have to worry about screwing up your system because it prevents you from messing up the stock rom.
FedEx is terrible. My phone won't be here til tomorrow
Anyway.
I think I will try and use Eclpise first. It looks like what I am after
Another vote for Eclipse here
The JB ROMs, CM10, AOKP etc. are all very nice, but missing crucial features like camera flash and the HDMI port.
Does eclipse introduce any bugs? If it gives stock functionality without the stock bloat, I'll be changing my mind...

Not noticed any bugs.
I find the (optional, flashed separately) speed tweaks to really hurt battery life, but the basic ROM (plus olegfusion's GSM patch) works just fine.
Thanks! In that case I'll probably try it out when my semester ends and I have time to tinker.
I want to tag in here, I recently purchased this phone and im from the Netherlands. I read that the Droid4 will have stock JB (4.2) support. The thing is, I am dutch and the phone isn't unlocked. Now i've been trying to understand if the update is possible for me and if the update is out allready (cant find anything about it)
Little background info:
I've had the desire Z when it intially launched and it broke down last month. Been using the desire for a month and im going nuts! Really missing a physical HD and when I started googling it seemde that the droid4 is made for me, but not being sold in stores in the NL.
It depends... what are running right now? what are you looking for? performance or battery life??????????????
I have not seen any news that this phone will get 4.2, but Motorola currently has the device listed among those that will receive 4.1 at some point (no date scheduled, though). There has not yet been an official stock release of any form of Jellybean to the Droid 4 so far.
Sorry for the late reply, I got the phone now and I saw that Hashtag is one of the core dev's for 4.1/4.2 AOKP/CM10. The phone is unlocked when upgrading to ICS via WiFi, so thats not a worry. The problem is that I cant get the data to work, ive posted about it here
Fixed! Was blind and didnt see this post Ideal for GSM users

I've never had much luck with GSM/UMTS data on Hashcode's ROMs. Stick with something like Eclipse ICS for now until Hashcode's ROMs mature a bit.
if I were you, I'd also go for the eclipse rom.
I had installed the jb rom at first, but somewhen it got really slow and apps began to crash, I also lost connection with my carrier more often then with the eclipse rom that I've changed to now.

I just recently got a used Droid 4 myself, and I have to agree with ECLIPSE. It was the first rom I installed (immediately after I got the phone), and I rooted/safestrapped with the ICS Utility. It was an absolute breeze, and ECLIPSE is running wonderfully.
