[Video] Nexus 4 Ear Speaker & Loud Speaker Issues while on Call - Nexus 4 General

Well after ordering on the 13th during the first 15 minutes and being a Limbo Level 3 got my Nexus 4 and this happens
On hold for the last 30 minutes
Edit
There are two issues, one is the buzzing when not on call and the other is the borked up earpiece (maybe less than mine).
I didn't have the buzzing when there were no calls being made but I think the issue I have is an extension of the buzzing issue and is in all probability a manufacturing defect.
They make such an awesome device with bad hardware, Google would be crying
the old device directly goes to LG USA as I can see from my RMA return label so my personal advice to all those who have issue while in call please RMA the device.

Google will be sending a replacement.

That sucks. Does it happen on all volumes or just max?

all the time..fml

Just got off the call with a CSR after 45 minutes of waiting ..they will be sending a replacement but another charge of 349 on my credit card until I return the Old one

That sucks munchy. I'm glad I got a good one. I hope you get everything straightened out.

Yeah I hate the way they do rma's at Google. Why not just charge you if you don't return the old one in a certain amount of time like most other companies? Is it your fault you got a bad one? No!
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2

Thanks Ryan, lets hope I get a new one which is fine soon, I am happy that the one that I sent to John aka VT is good, the moment I found the f**king issue in my phone I emailed him to check his and his is fine, as I ordered 2 and assuming they both were from the same manufacturing lot I guess it's a bug in LG's assemble line

Good luck. Mine makes a very slight nose from the earpiece speaker. It kinda sounds like the soc doing it's thing. I imagine it's fairly normal. I don't have any sounds like you. I feel bad for you because we waited so long and now you got a dud. The one good thing about Google's method of RMA is you can use the old one as much as you like before getting the new. What I don't understand is they have our cc info on file and they still insist on holding the funds. You won't have to pay tax or shipping again though. I had to go through it twice with my nexus 7 so I know how bad it was.
At the same time I do understand why they do it because people could just file an RMA and take off with both devices by removing the card from wallet.
Anyway, I'm sure everything will work out for you. You are good people and I look up to your kindness bro.

Thanks again Ryan, you know how we roll ..bad things do happen to good people I guess

OP updated with some more information.

I have the same thing wrong with my nexus 4 and I do not have the funds ($388) in my account at the time, does anyone know if they will still allow me to do the exchange for a new device?

I don't think so , if you can add a new card/account maybe you can as they send you a link wherein you already have the n4 already in cart and you click on purchase

I have heard and I don't know if its true but I remember hearing that you can send in your faulty device then when they receive it they will send you a new one. I'd look into that cause that s just not OK to hold you at bay because you don't have additional funds for there f*ck up.

I've had zero issues with my N4, actually I love it! Only issue is the screen gets hot but that's expected.

This phone should be recalled and we should all get new revised hardware with no issues and usb otg working. Fking ridiculous. I doubt my replacement will be any better and that's why i'm keeping the first phone until replacement arrives.

i've got same problem, although mine is not as severe. Most interesting part is that when I use google talk or skype, this problem does not exist, and it seems to come up only when making regular phone calls!

Review from a former LL3 (Received Yesterday)

So I got my phone yesterday evening at 7pm from the UPS driver and of course it was the latest I had ever received a package!
Anyways, all I have to say is that getting a phone from the "second wave" seems to have been a great thing because I have had ZERO issues at all so far. Right away I looked over the entire phone for any cosmetic defects that have been reported and nothing was found wrong. The screen IMO is amazing and colors look perfect as well. There is NO yellow tint whatsoever and I even had my GF look at it to make sure. Battery is already better than my former Blaze 4G and that's saying something. This phone is definitely a fresh start from the touchwiz ui and made me realize that was really kiddish looking like IOS IMO. The camera takes pictures just fine although I am still trying to figure out all the features on it. The phone got pretty warm on initial start up when all of my apps were being installed from the Play store but after that, normal browsing and such did not make it any warmer than anything i have felt before in other phones. Finally, there is NO buzzing in my earpiece at all, and yes my hearing is good, this again I had my GF check too so I knew I was not crazy.
So honestly, I think that maybe the second wave was produced better or something I really don't know, but I encourage anyone to get this phone if they have been debating because of other peoples "issues". Thanks
That's great to hear. I also ordered a N4 from the second batch and I can't wait for it to be here. Nice review
Mine does rattle. Got it yesterday. But I could care less about that. Loving the phone so far. Just want to be able to order a bumper and get my best skins ever in so I don't worry so much about using it.

Grats on getting your phone; you're gonna love it.
I got mine a week after the initial ordering and my phone is perfect, so I don't know about any second waves or anything like that. There are always going to be phones with manufacturing-related defects; that's why they do exchanges. Don't get hung up on a few people who think their phones are s**t.

I got my 2 Nexus 4's yesterday. The one seems fine, but I have an issue with the 2nd one. During calls, the earpiece buzzes while making sounds. The earpiece does not make any sounds when it is off like a lot of people seem to report. This is strictly a problem during calls and it sounds like the speaker is blown. It does rattle a bit when I'm putting it on a table or whatnot, but that doesn't really bother me.
Called support yesterday, and they were supposed to send me an e-mail with instructions on sending this one back and getting a replacement, but haven't actually received anything from them.
I seem to have some kind of knack for getting bad phones from Google. I had ordered 2 Galaxy Nexus phones when they came out, and ended up getting a replacement for one of the phones because there was dust in the camera. The replacement had the wifi go out, so I had to get that one replaced. The third one actually had a similar buzzing issue with the earpiece but it wasn't as bad, and I was tired of dealing with them at that point, so I lived with it.

I get what you are saying, but he is still literally correct.
I'm sure he could care less, otherwise he wouldn't have an N4. If he cared less:
- he could have not bought the phone
- he could leave it at a bus stop and go on living
- etc. etc.
Now, I'm sure he could care a hell of a lot MORE about it, taking to the internet in fits of rage, driving to Mountain View and knocking on the front door and such. But still, he could also care less.
Just saying.
Received mine yesterday and it has zero flaw. I don't take the mini rattle as one as it comes from the camera (autofocus?) and all the phones I tested since learning that on this forum have it.
For those of you wondering if the bumper is worth 20 euros, it's definitely well made, perfectly fits the look of the phone and prevents the back from direct contact but... well, the phone has a perfect size for my hand and the bumper adds about 0.5 - 0.7 cm in width which makes it awkward to hold. I find myself removing it often when using my phone.
My 2 cents.

Most people that received the initial batch also had zero issues. It's basically just a couple squeaky wheels that make things seem worse than they actually are.

I don't have any issues whatsoever from the 1st batch. The more you try to look for something to be wrong the higher the chance that something unnoticeable will begin to irritate you lol.
Zero issues with the first batch. But if these phones get better with each batch, imagine the 50th batch!

Replacement nexus 4 lost or stolen......or so I thought.

So my replacement nexus 4 was suppose to be delivered on Monday. Around noon monday, I check the tracking which said it had been delivered...except I was home all morning and no package was delivered. I waited a few hours, figuring it was some kind of mistake with the tracking.
Then, I called UPS and they confirmed that it had been delivered at the stated time. I immediately called google and explained the situation. They were very understanding and started the process of disabling the lost device and issuing me a new one.
However, later that evening, my neighbour rang the bell and had the package in his hand....he had just come back from work and found it sitting at his front door (arghhh UPS ). At this point I hadn't yet received the e-mail from google with the link to order another replacement, so I figured I would call them to let them know that I had found the device. The rep told me that she would send the request to the department that handles lost/stolen device, but it was most likely already too late. She said she would keep me posted on the situation by e-mail.
Today, I still haven't received the e-mail with the link to order the new replacement, and the device is working fine (I assume if they disable it, it would lock me out or something). So I e-mailed the aforementioned rep and explained this to her. She e-mailed back saying that they had already disabled the device and given me a full refund, and that I would have to reorder the device...wtf On top of that she made no mention of returning this device (But I did go ahead and mail back the original phone today).
The phone is still working fine and my credit card doesn't show any refund (though this may be due to the fact that they haven't yet processed the refund....just my guess). Oh and still no e-mail to order the replacement, but I'm assuming since they are apparently issuing a refund, they expect me to place a whole new order?
What do you guys think? Is this just a big miscommunication between the various departments at google? Did they indeed stop the disabling of the device (which would explain why the device is still working)? But then why would the rep tell me I need to reorder the device. Man, this is just a big mess......and the funny part is, this device has the same earpiece buzzing problem for which I did the RMA lol.

Mine is from the Nov 13th batch of orders no buzzing in my ear piece. My neighbor ordered on the 7th and received it on Monday and it has a buzzing earpiece so I don't think that it has anything to do with what batch it came from.

They said once they remote disable the device it will basically become a paperweight. I have no idea of exactly what they do. Can anyone shed some light on this? BTW phone still works.
Why would anyone hold up their phones to their ears when it is not on or even on a phone call??!
is this like the "if I shake my phone real hard, I can hear something rattling inside" complaint?
I can't believe you mailed the phone back before even receiving the e-mail with the link to get the next RMA unit. If I were you I would have kept the phone until it either stopped working or you placed the next RMA order and had the next replacement in hand.
Now who knows when you will get your hands on another N4. Looks like you are in a whole new limbo period.

I think what they do is void the ESN on the device rendering it unusable as a carrier cannot activate a bad ESN.

I can clearly hear the buzzing while on a call on both the original and the replacement phone, and it's really annoying. Obviously if I could not hear it in a call, it would be a non-issue.

I mailed back the original phone that I ordered on Nov 13, not the replacement. The rep said that I had to mail back the original right away to avoid being charged for it. Like I said, the replacement phone is working fine (except for the buzz lol) and so far as I can tell, they have not "disabled" the device in any way yet. Even if they do, I have a perfectly fine HTC one S sitting here that I have no problem using.
Sucks man, sorry. I would've tried to keep that thing as long as I could. As far as the buzzing, seems like all these devices have a shielding or grounding issue which is causing the noise in the ear piece. My first phone which I got from TMobile (I love 30 day return policy ) had a pretty bad electrical/modem sound that was actually very distracting while in a call. The new device which I just received yesterday from El Goog doesn't have this defect, but does have the sound of an active earpiece at all times. Hardly an issue. The previous device sounded really bad over VOIP and calls never sounded as good as with the new one. Best to be patient and satisfied rather than hasty and regretful
Good luck man!!

So I just got an e-mail from another rep saying that they were able to stop the deactivation of the device. lol. No wonder why the phone has been working all along. I think I'm just going to sell the phone since I don't want to go through this whole RMA process again, and it does seem like this buzzing happens on all nexus 4s. I'll probably order one again once these issues have been worked out. In the mean time, I think I can get by just fine with the HTC one s that I picked up brand new for $100 last week

Back to the Nexus 4

I just wanted to share my full story of how I ended up with a "working" nexus 4 months after ordering one.
Anyone from the official shipping thread will recognize the first part of my story.
I was one of the unlucky stiffs that ordered on release day and had to wait 3 weeks for the phone. My Order went through at 2pm that afternoon and I was backordered until the end of November. When I finally got the Nexus it had a faulty radio so after a week of troubleshooting I requested a replacement. I kept on Google about the replacement, emailing and calling every few days for status updates. I was told it would be delivered within the week and not to worry. Then one dark December evening...(Dec 14th) i received an email telling me i would have a 3-4 week wait because the RMA stock was backordered as well. Now I've learned my lesson from reading on XDA; that may not be the case for all, but apparently it was for me. Keep in mind they put a hold on my account for the price of the phone when I first ordered the replacement and took over a week to drop off. The phone was great for the week I had it before I realized it couldn't switch between towers and I was missing calls etc, but i just dont really want it that bad anymore. Not enough to go without a phone for another 3-4 weeks and let google hold another 350. I cancelled the RMA and requested a refund. They say i should have it 14 days after they receive my device. A hold for the price of the device was put on my account again after a few days because apparently they didn't actually cancel the RMA. I called for more information and was told it was a mistake. Not because they didn't cancel the RMA, but because a device wasn't sent to me. I would still be on the backorder list if I hadn't cancelled. I fussed the phone zombie out and told then to cancel everything. I waited on the phone for a supervisor and confirmation of my cancellation. Fuming, I posted the device on craigslist and sold it to someone willing to deal with an LG replacement. I went out and purchased a Lumia 920, partially to spite google (....a moot gesture im afraid since i love my nexus 7 and im not getting rid of it), partially because after using a vanilla jelly bean device nothing else running android measures up IMO, and mostly out of curiosity. Ive had issues with my google account for years that google cant fix, like a useless calendar because of endlessly multiplying events. This allowed me to set up a new outlook calendar. So far im very happy with my Lumia, and even though it doesnt have nearly the developer support, app selection or following as android, i think i will have it for a while. I mean hey, I've always got my nexus 7.
30 days after purchasing the Lumia I began to realize....its not enough. Yea it looks cool and can do the basics but its just not an android. I can't tweak it with tasker and I can't even use custom notification tones. I check out craigslist just to see what I could get for it and see that its still going for full price. I post it and take a look at my monthly statement. BLAM. A refund for my nexus 4 slaps me in the face. Turns out Google goofed and gave me a refund. Being the honorable man that I am, I called them. I know I know. Dumb move. I begin and email chain with a CSR that is utterly confused as to why I was refunded. I stop hearing from him and two days later have a missed call from a debt collections agency. I freak and call them back, but no one answers or gets back to me. I email the csr and the jerk tells me I shouldn't have received the refund and I will have to deal with the debt collections agency. After sending an email full of words I probably should use here like "you" and "f*ckhead" I research debt collections agencies and realize this doesn't add up. Why can't I reach them and why weren't they specific in the message they left. I begin to think that maybe it was a phishing call conveniently timed and it has nothing to do with Google. I call them back and hold for a "supervisor" and confirm, no they don't send people to collections, the asshole from the emails was probably new" and to enjoy the money, merry Christmas.
All of the hate drained out of me, I check my craigslist emails, and get rid of the lumia the same day. I planned on getting an S3 since the nexus aka white unicorn is impossible to get, but I see an ad selling one for 400 bucks. I pounce like a starving black panther and snatch that bad boy up.
Now I'm rocking a nexus 4. I do love it, although I have a slight data drop issue. Its better than then first one though since I don't need to reboot then phone to restore data. I will work on it a bit more before sending to LG.
that's my story. I hope that's the end of the Nexus drama for me

Hey OP. I just got my RMA and after using it for a day I've noticed problems with the radio. I keep getting disconnected all the time from the mobile network and it won't work again until I restart the phone. Also if I upload on the mobile network it becomes so unstable that it disconnects and reconnects a few times before it just stops working again.
Now this is a huge issue for me as it's a phone and it can't connect to the mobile network properly. So I reflashed the radio and shut down my device for a few minutes. Nothing changed and it's still unstable. Could this issue "go away" or am I faced with ordering and waiting for another Nexus? The issue I am having is real right? I am just in total disbelief that LG messed it up two times in a row.
Wifi works fine though. It's just the radio is so unstable even after reflashing it with the stock radio. (checked MD5 hash too!)
BUT there is one thing I did that could possibly be the reason I am having these problems so I need somebody that is an even better expert to double check if a nandroid restore from another Nexus 4 can cause this problem. I didn't want to have the hassle of moving everything so I just restored the nandroid backup from my first Nexus 4. It works fine and nothing is corrupt (again I checked the md5 hash!) but the radio just seems to fail A LOT.
So do I RMA. Yes or no? I am saying yes but I'd just like to see if there is a chance I am the one to blame because it's a hassle to go through this.
mines a rev 10 and ive never had an issue with data or disconnecting, but im running a custom rom and kernel. just a side note, random data and signal drop issues are almost always software related, so an update COULD fix it, or maybe a custom kernel
So right now I'm following this topic... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2084706
My first device disconnected anytime it seemed to switch towers. It only happened when I moved maybe 100 feet or more. And it didn't reconnect until a reboot. I tried flashing different ROMs and kernels and switching the sim but nothing fixed the issue. If I were you I would try stock with no restore just to cross it off the list, but it sounds like you should RMA it. My second device disconnects and reconnects every now and then, but its seemed to improve after flashing cm10.

Why I had a Nexus 4 for 24 hours only...

So, I ordered my Nexus 4 like many others did the day they became available again recently and coudn't wait for it to get here. Immediately, out of the box, I was in love with the sleek design of my new handset. The next day, my new phone was the focus of many others attention and I almost felt like a spokesman for the phone, pitching it to everyone who raised a question about it. I was in complete ire.
Unfortunately, 18 hours after having the device and having above a 50% charge, my Nexus 4 powered itself off and became a brick. I panicked immediately and called the phone number given on the site and in the attached documentation. I had to call several times and was disconnected repeatedly. I spokke to attendants a couple times and they told me that if I got disconnected again, they could not call me back. Eventually, an hour later or so, I was able to talk to someone in support who had me try a few things to get the phone into recovery. None of this worked. This is when things went from bad to worse.
I was told that I would be transferred over to product return/replacement and of course was disconnected again. I tried again....and again.
I now made it through to product replacement was told that they would email me out the shipping label to return the phone back and that they would have to charge my account for the replacement in the meantime!!! So, Google basically wants me to fork out TWICE the money, so that I can wait to have them ship out another one and they won't refund my account until they inspect the original.
I'm not sure about how many of you can afford this, but I can't. I had saved for this phone and I had already arranged to sell my old phone. Basically, I'm screwed....So, I at least ask how long it will take to ship the replacement. I'm told 2-3 weeks, even if I'm a replacement!
I spoke to another supervisor to verify this, and that was their policy. I opted for a return over a refund and am sure that I will never purchase anything from Google again.
I would not to if that happened to me, if you stay in the android camp I dont know many companies that give good customer support its a major down fall. I think this is why some people are buying from retail stores so they can just get it replaced.
Its a shame the nexus 4 is the best android phone out right now in terms of design and speed. I can't believe they treated you like that can you complain to some consumer watch dog? Maybe get a free phone out of it lol

They place a hold on your account to make sure you send back the damaged phone. As far as it being 2-3 weeks, I rma'd my phone Thursday night and it already shipped 2 day air.

I had issues with the charger port on my phone last week. I called Google and didn't have any problems talking to someone in replacements.
I called last Saturday, the phone shipped Tuesday and I had the replacement Thursday. They did do an authorization on my credit card to insure I did have the funds available, in case they find the damage to be my fault but the authorization has already disappeared.
Overall it wasn't a bad experience

What else did you do the phone? I find it heard to believe that a phone will magically turn into a brick after 24 hours of use.

I would have them put it on a credit card rather than have a ~$400 hold on my checking account. That's just me though. ;O)

If you used a credit card with the play store then they don't charge you for the replacement, it's only a hold on the funds which just means you have less available credit but no charge. I this this is a good compromise for both the customers and Google.

I agree, it was my loss. However, I'm no "noob" and am quite familiar with mobile technology. This was simply a case of a defective handset. I wish I had an experience with like some of you other responders have shared, however that was not the case for me. Yes, I will suffer some for not having a Nexus 4, but Google will suffer more with the loss of my business and the amount of times I will share my story.

To the op.
Return for refund and save yourself a heap of grief.
The phone is definitely not the best out there.
And some of the kids on this forum leave alot to be desired.
You got a defective unit, it happens sometimes. They're replacing it, what's the problem exactly?

I had no trouble with RMA and their service. Dont worry they do RMA replacement really quick. They have reserved nexus 4 for warranty purposes.

Yes Google will suffer more. Love the self-contradicting sentences.
1. You said it's simply a case of defective handset. Who ever judges a company by a case of defective handset? By that standard, you can buy nothing because every company ships defective unit, and that's why we have warranty/replacement policy.
2. If it's simply a case of defective handset, I'm sure all the "other people" whom you are going to tell your story to, will believe in you completely and avoid Google in the future.
3. If you are quite familiar with mobile technology, you'll know all manufacturers have defective unit, and if you are following Nexus 4 news, you KNOW how Google's advance-replacement works (charge your card and refund once received your defective unit), and how bad Nexus 4 back-order is/was.
4. If you are quite familiar with mobile technology, I'm surprised you never registered an account here at XDA. Is Nexus 4 your first smartphone? First Android? If that's the case, don't say you are quite familiar with mobile technology.
Thank you for this informative post. I'm sure we will all mourn Google's loss.

Don't let life get you down, bro. You don't want to end up like me
I'm really sorry you had a bad experience, OP. I count myself as one of the lucky ones who has had zero problems with their device. I hope it stays this way.

OP, what all did you do to the device? Was it unlocked/rooted only? Or were you using a custom ROM? I think providing that information would also help the community out, as it would give us a heads up on the potential risk(s) involved with a particular build. Also, I feel sad for your loss, I do not appreciate it when people aren't very supportive of their fellow Android users, I hope things work out well man.
Kind regards,
John

What a **** move.
So, you purchased a unit and it turned out to be defective. They agreed to let you exchange it, but they needed to take a hold of $400 in your account in the meantime, so you won't do it?
So, instead of just complying, you're going to spread a bogus story that just shows your own ignorance whilst trying to make Google look like a bad business? Despicable. Absolutely despicable.
It is an advanced RMA, it's the best possible way to do an RMA IMO since there is no "turnaround" time however did you ask them if you could send your phone in first and once they receive it you can get a new one sent out? It'll take even longer but that is the way most companies do things...unfortunately.

Hardware can fail and it is more likely for it to happen in the first 24hrs than it is a year down the road, it sucks but this is far more believable to me than the "spontaneous back shattering" that some on this site are claiming.

The speaker issues

Just to let you know it does seem to be device specific and some type of manufacture defect.
I took my phone in to the store where I got it here in the UK (Carphonewarehouse) and they too thought it was very low. They brought out another Nexus 5 and the sounds was A LOT louder.
They swapped it out then and there!
I now have a brand new Nexus 5 with great sound

yeah my co worker also has a nexus 5 and his speaker is also louder than mine. Beside the low speaker, my nexus is perfect no dead pixels, dust under the screen or loose power button. I am not going to chance doing an RMA. I hope we get a software fix from google soon about the sound.

You know you can send back the replacement unit if it's not better than your n5 now, right? You can choose to keep the one you already have.

I think Google is changing their policy where now they are wanting you to return your first, then they will sent out the replacement. I read couple of recently post on the RMA thread

Wow, crazy. I guess it was because there was a lot of RMA's. I was lucky I guess. I am able to continue using my device until my RMA device gets here in a week or so. And I was told I can deny it if it's no better. Anyway, maybe it's worth a call to see if you're eligible to do the same. Good luck.
