Lost all files on /sdcard when transfering files from PC - Nexus 7 General

I just tried to transfer files from my PC (Win7) via USB MTP onto my Nexus7 which seemed to work as usual. When I tried to locate them on the tablet, I noticed that the complete /sdcard folder is still there, but empty. Also the /storage/sdcard0 and /storage/emulated.
This actually happend the second time, but the first time I just had updated to 4.2.1 and I thought I must've missed some instructions about backing up the files first, so I (falsely) assumed it was my error.
The device is the 16gb wifi only version running current android 4.2, it's been rooted after purchase in summer using Nexus Root Toolkit 1.5.3. I just use the usual popular play store apps like nova launcher, total commander, firefox and stuff, nothing special.
I couldn't find anyone on the internet with a similar issue, so I put this here.
//edit1: I have only one user set up: me alias the owner.

Hi have a look at your settings in multi user accounts. It hides them so others can not see them

I fail to see how that should affect why I don't "see" my files anymore. I haven't switched the user, I only have one: the owner. May you please make your point more clear?

You can alter where things are stored. Have you connected back to pc to search tab that way. Check storeage settings did you use ptp or mtp for transfer

I used MTP. The tablet looks empty from "within" via Totalcommander & EStrong Filemanager. Also other apps like music don't see my files. Storage shows suspiciously much free space, I guess it's really gone. From PC it looks the same, completely wiped. It recreated the /sdcard/Android-Folder, and the Apps I've used since recreated their folders... I can't find where you meant I could alter where things are stored. Storage just let's me delete stuff and users just let's me edit the away-message.
Thanks anyway so far.

Hi I use wifi file explorer. Try that to transfer your files and let me know how it goes. Its in the playstore/market

[APP] Copy Apps to you VS GTAB with "Bluetooth File Transfer"

I just wanted to put this out there for anyone having trouble finding apps on the Market with their VS GTAB.
I found Bluetooth File Transfer by "Medevial Software" that allowed me to transfer most of the apps that I have on my Nexus One over to my GTAB.
The app has a nifty little function called "Send Applications" on the menu under the "more" tab.
Both devices have to have bluetooth on for this function to activate.
This app helped me to get apps over to my GTAB when I couldn't get to them from the Market (on the GTAB).
Some Apps on my N1 were locked so I could'nt move those but for the most part I was able to get a lot of apps on my GTAB that I was not able to get via normal channels.
You can also use the free version of dropbox and get apps from all your PC/phone/Gtab.
It's a cool little app/program. and you can share folders as well. But it is only via wifi, which is fine as my phone is rooted so I always have wifi.

I used Dropbox all the time it's pretty cool but I tried to see if I could get my apps from my N1 over to my GTAB with Dropbox but it didn't give me the option to send APKs like BTFT does.
BTFT will package the selected apps into individual APKs so you can install them easily after they are transfered to your device. Which is a big help because before I found BTFT I was moving apps over using Titanium Backup which had many steps to get the apps over and installed successfully. With BTFT those steps are greatly reduced.
Try it out.
Nice find, thank you sir.

I believe the default location for transfered apps is the main directory of the internal sdcard.
/mnt/sdcard
Just scroll to the bottom if you are using a file explorer like estrongs.
BTFS worked great for me! send a few apps to my boss' droid2!
Here is an easy way to transfer and sideload. Using a WiFi connection.
Download apk's to your pc, use ES File explorer to browse for apk on PC (Lan), copy to your "downloads" folder on sd (Local). Browse w/ ES File explorer to downloads , choose apk and install.
Been working like a charm for me
Edit; Sorry to post this here, since this thread relates to "BFT", meant to post on previous thread.

Using VEGAn 5.1 Beta with Pershoots Latest 2.6.32.29
It does work Nexus to VEGA, I just tried it out again using CM7 RC1 on my
Nexus w/Wildmonks 2.6.35.10. Transferred nine test apk's over just now as I typed this thread reply.
I'm not using the 5.1.1 supplement.
I was using stock kernel (I guess) from vegan, updating now to see how it goes...
NO GO! updated to latest pershoot
Weird, anyhow, no biggy since I have plenty of other way to transfer my apk, just very strange!

Hmmm? Don't have an answer for you. I remember having that same issue but all I did was make sure both devices were discoverable and making sure the ftp share service and opp receiving service were both enabled in settings for both devices. I don't know for sure that would be your fix though..

I had the problem before of getting an error message, but I installed Blue Tooth File Transfer on both devices and now it works fine. I have it on my Gtab, EPIC, Moment, and EVO and all works fine.
Wow, very cool. Thanks, worked great from N1.

Any way to migrate music data from internal memory to external?

So I have stored a lot of music using the default google music app and its gone to the internal data and I just received a memory card and want to change the musics' storage location to the new card but the only option I can find is to change the location of saving for when using Windows Media Sync. Is there any way to move the music and have the music app recognize the new location? I am rooted btw

If nothing else works, connect your phone to your computer for mass usb storage. On PCs it may not recognize both sd cards, but on my Mac it does, and I simply transfer things from one disk to the other that way. Got any friends with Linux or Mac?

This is the method that puts it where you want it to be.
The next step I go to is to tell any program that I am going to use to save files to use /sdcard-ext/-insert your folder here- so my files go where I want them to.

If you have lots of files, it is better to do it through usb connection. Otherwise, app like Astro file manager is the way to go.

Note's deleted my files! HELP!

Suddenly my note gave me an error message that my sd card is being used as mass storage & so data cannot be accessed. Well rebooted the phone to discover alot of files do not exist! Deleted?!!!?
Seems all deletes files are data files related to applications on the phone memory itself but not the applications or its settings!
Note: All files on the movable 16GB memory card are not deletes.
Examples for the files have been deleted:
Recently captured pics & vids.
Scanned documents by Camscanner application.
Scanned business cards by Camcard application.
SMemo files but not the folder structure I created.
SPB Wallet source file.
All WhatsApp downloaded pics was available in WhatsApp pictures folder.
All downloaded books to Kobo book & Mantano reader.
Please help as I am getting crazy with the amount of data I lost suddenly especially that I do not have any explanation to what has happened to my phone in order avoid it again in future!

Well now, that is a poor situation and atleast some of those files will not be possible to get back. Most of them possibly can, just as long as you do not write ANYTHING more on the SD card, not even SMS.
You could root the phone, take a .tar.bz2 image of the SD card partition on the external SD, copy the archive to your desktop and use Linux in a virtual machine to rescue the files from there -- the tool is called magicrescue.
Well this seems very complicates for me especially what's related to lunix & the virtual machine )) Anyway! Do you have any idea what might have caused this silly sudden problem so as for me to avoid? Is this common & subject to repeat? Is my device has any problem that I need to fix?

I know what caused the files to disappear; there was clearly filesystem corruption after improper shutdown and Android repaired it by removing affected files, but I do not know what caused your issue to begin with. Possibly something you've installed on the phone. In any case and just to be safe it, might be a good idea to backup everything, do a full factory reset and check you are running the latest firmware available.
Your explanation does make sense to me as I remembered that has happened just after I uninstalled the sslauncher application! But I also remember that the uninstallation has completed successfully with no problem!
Anyway, thank you for the valuable advice to backup & restore, I will make sure to do it today! Good day

Nexus 7 on Android 4.2 Ghost Files MTP Windows 7

Files deleted from within the Nexus 7 using FileManager still appears on Windows when connected to Windows 7 via USB. What's happening?
Clicking on these "ghost files" in windows explorer does nothing, but they can be deleted.
There seems to be many file structure issues with Android 4.2
I also get different free space figures reported from Settings/Storage and Storage Analyzer and Windows 7
Anyone else face these issues?
Folks never fail to amaze me...
An MT mount just gives Windows a view into a portion of sdcard storage. I have no idea why you would expect to see dynamic changes done by you on the device from Windows.
Try refresh on Windows or disconnect/reconnect the device to force a refresh.
Mostly don't be making changes to the device file system while Windows thinks it is control.
You know that part about safely disconnect? That is because Windows has a local cache of your file structures.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I have to disagree here, i have seen files show in windows days after deleting them on the device. No idea though if the files are true ghosts using zero space or if deleting them in windows does free up space on the device.
Also there is no safe disconnect when using mtp, its not required

You're right. The files appear in windows even after disconnecting and connecting to windows. dexterslab, did you have these issues before Android 4.2?
Somehow, an image of these deleted files remains on windows even though it has been cleanly deleted from within Android 4.2

I had the same problem with my Galaxy Note on my MacBook Air using the google MTP transfer app for Mac.
Deletes on the device were not seen by the Mac MTP application and I saw the deleted files forever.
I solved the problem by regularly deleting the application preferences and cache.
It's a MTP bug on the computer side.
If we could find a way to delete the cache for MTP on windows, I think we could solve that bug,
well that would more be a workaround but that would be better than nothing.

Same with my Nexus 7. But I don't think it's a big deal.
When I reboot my nexus 7 ,connect again, the "ghost files" disappear. Kind of refreshing problem I guess.
BTW, this exists on the earlier version like 4.1.1 too.
As far from my experience with this type of error with "ghost" files, I think is coming from the file explorer used because when I use the app named "ghost commander" I have no problem with the files. Maybe the name is was destinated but only with this I can see the files in real time, even on delete or copy directly on the tablet they refresh immediately on the PC too.

This crap happens because the onboard memory needs a refresh whenever you make a change from Windows Explorer, an SD rescan app from Play will force this.
MTP is ****.

Apollo And Play Music Not Removing Deleted Music From Library

I've installed my Nook Hd with Cyanogenmod (10.1.3-RC2).
2 problems with it;
1 - Neither Play Music nor Apollo music remove music from their libraries when it's deleted from the card
2 - Sometimes it won't unlock first time, it just flicks the screen back into lock, you have to cycle the power button and then unlock
The second I can live with - but any ideas on the first?
I've downloaded SDrescan, but this doesn't seem to do anything.
If I add music to the SD card it does get added to the libraries.
'Clear data' and 'clear apps' in Apps don't make any difference.
Versions of apps;
Apollo 1.1
Play Music 5.6.1609P
I tried upgrading to a Cyanogenmod 11 build, but this was unstable. Ditto 10.2.1, so I'm stuck on 10.1.3-RC2 for now.
2nd is more than likely an issue with a magnetic cover when it happens again close cover and then reopen. Not sure about the first sorry.

I think those apps cache the files in /sdcard/Android/data. Try searching there to see if a copy of the file is there.
There is also a CM10.1.3 stable which should be more advanced that RC2.
The previous user was right about the magnetic cover.

Looking at Cyanogenmod there seems to be a common issue with the build and the locking, although, as I say, I'm not fussed about this - I've been flipping the cover and working round it for months.
This RC2 is the latest stable version, as far as I know, the lock issue happens on every build I tried, except the unstable 10.2.1.
But I mostly care about the music staying there. And I've looked in;
/storage/emulated/ (0,11 and legacy)
/storage/sdcard1/Android/data (only folder is com.android.providers.media, then albumthumbs
/storage/usb0
No visible files.
Any other ideas?

You are wrong about CM10.1.3. There is one newer one than RC2. Go to:
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=ovation&type=stable
And you will see it. You were probably looking through the update function and since you are running an RC (release candidate), it only looked for new RCs, not stables. And the lock issue is still there for that too. I was not suggesting that was fixed in CM10.1.3 stable.
And you do not have /sdcard/Android/data/com.andrew.apollo?

I was wrong, though it was because I thought RC2 meant a service pack and had 'upgraded' from 10.1.3 stable to RC2, not because of my missing versions out - I'd added all releases to display.
They list the versions in a funny order on the device - RC2 comes after 10.1.3, so I'd assumed it was later - foolish!
And my device runs hummingbird btw not Ovation - but, anyway, thanks, quite right and I've gone back to 10.1.3 again (I'd been on it before).
They were only a couple of weeks apart, release wise, I don't think there's a whole lot of difference.
But sadly, nope, music apps still show the same thing.

At root level you don't see /sdcard if that matters.
You get /storage, within which is emulated, sdcard1 and usb0.
sdcard1 contains what seems to be on my card - and within that is 'android/data'
But no, no com.andrew.apollo within there.
I've found com.andrew.apollo in;
/data/data
/data/media/o/android/data
/data/media/11/android/dataa
/data/user/11
/mnt/shell/emulated/0/Android/data
/mnt/shell/emulated/11/Android/data
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data
/storage/emulated/legacy/Android/data
And I'm wondering if this is part of the whole 'Google removed sd card access from Kit Kat' thing - maybe it's because the apps see the emulated sd card or something.
I notice when /storage/emulated/0 is all that sdrescan scans. Maybe it's that, or something to do with that?
Any thoughts anyone?

Sometimes in the same profile, sometimes the other one, sometimes switched off and deleted from the card.
As I say, it picks up adding anything, just never deletes the old artists/tracks. At this point, it's getting ridiculous!
Searched for .nomedia, but nothig found.
Any idea how to manually replace the library?

Not running CM from the SDcard. The files are - were - on the SD card.
Doesn't seem to be an option for hidden files - though I've taken the card out and scanned it for hidden files with Windows explorer and nothing, that file isn't there.
Also, if this was the issue, I can't imagine it would detect the new files I've added.

Part of your issue is using that file manager. It is limited in what it can see. For instance, you said there was no /sdcard in the root directory. There is a shortcut there that other file managers can see. I verified that it is not visible with CM file manager and is with Root Explorer. CM file manager cannot see hidden files either. I suggest you try another file manager like Root Browser Lite and search more directories internally for your music files.

Having a lot of trouble with Root Explorer, it seems to search for ages with no results for .com.andrew.apollo
There's absolutely no chance the music files are still there. I've been runnnig the os for about 9 months now, only have a 32gb card and the list of music in Apollo and Play Music by now would fill that several times over.
I'll keep playing with Root Browser and see if I get any joy.

Wait a minute, you are not saying the music files themselves are still there, you are saying they are just in the app's library database? In that case, go to /data/data/com.andrew.apollo/databases and there will be files there. Rename or delete them. See if that helps.
