Battery stats with Standard and Extended Battery..

So, if you have two batteries, how does the system average the battery stats? They are two different animals and I doubt it's conducive to wipe the battery stats every time you want to use the standard battery or change to the extended battery.

Actually, the extended batter is a Lithium Ion Battery, it doesn't need calibration because it doesn't have the "memory" that the Lithium Ion Polymer (standard battery) does.
Lithium Ion Batteries work best with a higher charge, so just keep it charged as much as possible.
If you switch back and forth between the 2 batteries, you need to calibrate the standard battery once, then you should be able to switch back and forth without issue.

Wiping battery stats in CWR is part of the calibration process.
You should charge it fully while the phone is off, then wipe stats in CWR, reboot, use the phone as normal until the battery dies, then charge it fully while it's on.
After that you can switch back and forth.
That calibration technique is for the standard battery. Like I said before, the extended battery needs no calibration.

Nope. The battery stats are only used for the Lithium Ion Polymer batteries.
The lithium ion battery has no memory. Just try to keep it fully charged as much as possible.

So, if I have a charger at my side, use it eh?

One thing I've noticed that maybe Tivo7 can answer:
On the standard battery, when I would reboot my phone the battery life would drop. Say I was at 70% battery life, I'd restart phone and it would be at 50% or 40%..
On the extended battery, its the opposite. I'll be at 80% battery life, restart my phone, and it'll be at 100% for a few hours. And its done this half a dozen times for me. I've never actually seen the battery level do anything other than increase after a restart.
Is this phone just really bad at telling battery level? I know its difficult to accurately determine battery level (I've read that before) but this phone seems to be particularly bad at it.

That's a known issue and idk how to fix it or if it even needs fixed. I figure it just used a lot of battery to boot up.

But yeah idk how or why that happens or how to fix it. I just deal with it.
My extended battery is usually at like 60% by the end of the day after being charged overnight then used all day.
And I charge it every night so it rarely gets below like 50% unless I do a lot of apk editing and flashing that day.

Same here, I've used the calibration app a few times and deleted battery data using CWM to see if it would resolve the inaccuracy problems.
Uninstalled the calibration app after I read this thread.
Also, although Lithium Ion Batteries don't have a memory effect, they do have one issue from charging:
High charge levels and elevated temperatures (whether from charging or ambient air) hasten capacity loss. Charging heat is caused by the carbon anode (typically replaced with lithium titanate which drastically reduces damage from charging, including expansion and other factors).

So it may not be best to keep it at full charge at all times. I mean, I wouldn't go out of your way to charge it all the time.

hey guys
in the last couple of weeks ive flashed about 5 roms which consider to be good.
i have to say I really like android but one issue keeps me frustrated
and thats battery life.
how can it be that my friends iphone battery lasts so much more then my galaxy s1?
ive gone through numeros guides decreased brightness to minimum
stopped syncing my gmail account and other stuff as well.
as time goes by im regreting not buying iphone when i had the chance
because battery is one of the most important things in a smartphone.
currently,
i am 25 years old student studying computer science in the university
which means im out most of the day.
its not that rare for me to be stuck without battery and its so frustrating.
i ask for your help please,
what is the best rom for s1 regarding battery life
and has hebrew on it?

yes man everytime after flashing a new rom im calibarating when reaches 100
let it drops to 0 and turn off
then charging to 100 again.
i just want my battery to last hehe

Dropping to 0% is the worst thing a LI-ION battery can experience.
There are some calibrations methods around, you can try some apps but I think you ROM just needs some time to calibrate the battery sign. Are you running a zillion of apps in the background?

Another option is to buy a new battery with more power. stock battery has 1500mah. but you can get a battery with 1800mah for your s1.

Did you wipe battery stats in cwm?

Disable mobile data or switch to 2G only it helps a lot. Phone will drain battery if you have a bad signal

I have to second the disable the data connection recommend. Also your battery life will get better the longer you use a rom and the more charge/discharge cycles your battery sees. To be clear that does not mean 100%-0% every time just regular charging.
I'm personally on GB and with data disconnected for most of the day and the 1800mah battery I have been on the same charge for almost a week and still have 30% left. It's truly amazing!!

Dropping below the minimum voltage is what you're talking about, and that's not possible because of the controller on each battery. That's why the phone dies when it hits 0% (or thereabouts) even though it still has plenty of power left over to run the device. Running a full cycle on the battery will be just fine.

When to replace the battery?

I am on Prime HD 8.0 and the battery life is dismal. I wiped battery stat, deleted unwanted apps but the battery life is still too bad.I changed the ROM and the problem persists. So its not a software issue. My X8 is almost two years old so I suspect its the battery. Is there any way i can check battery health? The shape of the battery hasnt changed or anything. Any opinions?
Secondly, if I do have to go in for a battery, should I get the EP500 standard 1200mah battery or the Mugen Power's 1300mah battery? Has anyone used the latter? Is the higher price I need to pay for the latter justified by better battery life?

My battery does that too on custom roms (99-90% in a few mins, but it drains a whole lot less after that). And it's not even a year old. Do try to flash back to stock with minimal apps installed and check the battery drain for just 2-3 days. I do think it's the battery, but it doesn't hurt to be sure.

my battery is one year old and it runs good. try wipe battery stats and use stock eclair for a few days. and make sure you dischard it to 0% ( you can even power on your phone) than charge it to 100% on stock eclair. make sure you have turned gps off and use 2G networks if you you dont use mobile data. ---- but I think you know that already. configure wifi sleep policy, brightness, turn off unnecesary apps etc.
If you have battery for cca. 2years. - its very possible that you need to change it. And I think you should but first try whats mentioned above

Not in 1-2 mins

Strange battery drops and screen flicker

I had been using Cassies Xtralite rom V8 along with Hydracore 4.3 Std for weeks and everything was fine. One day the phone restarted on its own and the battery dropped from 61% to 1% just after it restarted. Then the screen started flickering too and the phone shut down on its own. This was strange because I had just charged the phone to 100% 2 hours before that and it didn't make sense. Therefore, I charged it to full while switched off and tried again. The battery drained to around 80% quite fast and then after trying to enter recovery to clear the Dalvik cache the battery went down to 5% when the phone restarted. This repeated for a couple of days until I had to do a Full Wipe and flash the rom and kernel again. However, the battery drain and sudden battery drop after restart still remain.
I read about a fuel gauge and tried to reset it by taking the battery out for a couple of minutes after charging to 100% while switched off but that didn't help either.
Does anyone have any answers to this?

Charge your phone to 100% and clear the battery stats in cwm
It doesnt improve battery life but improves the accuracy of the displayed battery percentage
Or try changing the rom and see if the problem still exists

some roms appear to be experimenting with battry percentage based on usage. Try another rom.
Ultimately I had to go back to gb, with partition and load bootloader and stay clear of the rom in question to fix my stuff. I dare not go back again because of this issue.
I think I had to do this cause the various roms messed with special partitions, which arent wiped or formatted properly throught cwm. Migrating between different roms didnt fix it for me. wtf.

edit went back and had issues again. Used above approach and it didn't work anymore. It sucks.

Thank you for your replies. I tried charging to 100% and recalibrating or clearing batt stats but it did't help much.
Actually yesterday my phone would not boot and stuck to the bootloader. I had to do a factory reset in CWM to load again but as soon as it did the phone worked for 1-2 hrs and then reached around 70% batt fast and the screen flickered and turned off on its own. Uppn restarting batt was at 5%
Tried restoring a nandroid from mid September and things are slightly better. As soon as it starts the flickering I plug it on the AC and it doesn't die, but that's not always possible. It might have something to do with the batt voltages. I had flashed a Hydracore OC version and it might have messed things up. When charging the voltage goes over 4200mV.

Hi,the very simple methode for your problem is........buy a new battery and insert it in your phone then start it and problem solved !
Very easy don't you think ?
Btw,repeatitly flash rom,kernel,or all side stuff with flashtool or like that and use your phone with high frequency kill your battery very fast !
So,
the first symptom of a dead battery is autoreboot and quick down level.
Don't try to use battery test in factory with custom rom because 80% they not support it
In this case,you have always wrong indications in test mode (batteryHealt=good/100)even if your battery is dead !
Trust me and good luck
Oh and,stay away from chinese battery with high voltage and good price !
Prefer Choose stock or mugen power

In fact the battery appears to be the problem indeed. I took it out and placed it on a flat table and it would spin with ease. It is bulged quite a bit. Now looking to buy the original 2500 mAh battery by Samsung and the 2700 mAh battery by Anker to have a spare

If your battery is bulged then it's a dud and won't retain charge, plus you run the risk of it bursting which will kill the phone outright.

I am having a similar issue, screen starts flickering incessantly and suddenly battery drops to 2-3% and phones restarts etc. My battery does revolve a little bit, but am unsure if that's normal or not?

Battery life is crap

Brower facebook and tapatalk for about 20 minutes nothing else. Dropped 8% . I also killed my battery yesterday watching a movie and playing a game took a total of 3 hours. What do you guys think.

No, if it dies that fast then it's user error.
Install betterbatterystats and look for wakelocks.

let it go from 100 to 0 a few times, when i first got the phone my battery was pretty bad but after a couple weeks im getting 20+hours on a single charge =D

There's no need to cycle with li-ion or li-po batteries. In fact it's explicitly bad for your battery to run it down to 0.

Running your battery from 100% to 0% is useful in recalibrating the battery in the event of cell mismatches, which can happen over time.

You generally shouldn't need to recalibrate the battery on a new phone (since it's a new battery), but it doesn't hurt if you think your battery may be mis-calibrated. (for example, your phone sits at 0% battery for long amounts of time) Do you have any apps that monitor wakelocks on your phone?

i was complaining my battery was crap yesterday. iv gained 1 hour in battery since yesterday.
GSam reported 9hours 24mins avg battery yesterday. I cycled it once since then and today its showing 10 hours 38mins avg.
Hoping for further improvements.

The phone needs to know where empty and full battery is. I've always calibrated mine by fully charging and killing at least twice with every phone I've owned and had no il effects and got much better battery life afterwards.

So do I calibrate or cycle? If so, how do I do that? Im fully stock and the only battery app I have is the battery guru made for snapdragon devices. Idk if that's what's killing my battery.

It does no harm to run the battery to 0% occasionally, but the advice i have seen is to try to not run li-ion / li-po batteries below 10% too often as that can shorten their life.
For a new device i would run it down to around 10% with normal use, then give it a real long charge till it indicates fully charged, then unplug it and wait a minute or so then plug it back in and leave it on charge another couple of hours to make sure it is fully 100% charged.
After you have done this whole procedure maybe 3 times, you should have a properley conditioned battery. My HTC One is usually at 50% or better after a 12 hour working day, so i am more than happy with the battery life.

You are totally wrong I am afraid. LiON and LiPO batteries do not have memories and neither like a complete discharge/recharge cycle. The rule is 'a little and often' as far as charging is concerned.

They do NOT have memory effect like nickel-based batteries, but they CAN suffer from cell mismatches which require re-calibration (aka fully charging, discharging, and recharging).

My experience and questions
Thanks for this excellent post! I got my new HTC One day before yesterday and like the Vincent's post says, the phone had about 40-50% of charge when it came in the box. I was very excited to see the phone that I totally forgot about recalibration of the battery
I used the phone out of the box, and I have charged from 2 nights (from about 15% to 100% charge) and haven't run the battery the battery down to 0% yet (when I say 0% what I mean is the level of charge when the phone automatically turns itself off to protect from complete discharge). My questions below:
1) What should I do now to accurately calibrate my battery life? When I called HTC customer service today they asked me to do battery reset (steps below).
- Untick the quick boot under settings -> power
- Turn off the phone
- Hold down the volume up, volume down and the power button continuously for 1 minute (the phone seem to boot up and shut down 3-4 times during this process)
- Run your battery all the way down to 0% and then charge it fully to 100%
This seems to be a fair procedure but since it was told by customer service, I'm a bit skeptical. So I would very much love to hear some opinion of battery gurus here
2) Does the 2 night charging that I did affect my battery capacity (has the dent been made already)?
Please let me know, and thanks in advance!
PS. The battery life in my experience in the past 2 days has been decent (I have about 20% from 7am - 9pm) and I'm a moderate-heavy user!
