I have been running MN 4-6-16a on NC software version 1.3 for over a year now. It's not totally stable (I get some freeze-ups occasionally & have to reboot) but it's workable. The other day, my wifi stopped working. Wifi goes off, and when I turn it on, it can't find my router, I get a black box that says 'unable to scan for networks', and it stops responding and the Nook asks me if I want to force close wifi. If I select 'wait' instead of force close, wifi shuts off.
Router works fine, other devices are connected. I have searched other threads, and it seems that some suggest installing CM7, though these suggestions are from a year ago.
Is there something more current I sould be running that would fix this problem. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated for this newbie.

The latest ROM for Nook Color is CM10 Jellybean 4.1.2 with a 3.08+ kernel. You can install it on a SD card and try it.If you like how it works you can install it internally. There are great tips threads you can utilize to help get you to the latest ROM. I use CM10 internally on my Nook Color. My other Nook Color has CM7.1 (gingerbread with 2.6.32 kernel). CM10 is running pretty smooth and just as fast as CM7.2.

Wow, that thread has 155 pages ... hard to get through all that .... I did read the first page, though
OK, so I should download CM10 latest nightly version & install ... I don't seem to have a way to back up my data or current ROM since I don't have an internet connection that works. Yes, I could install to SD, but I've read that there can weird problems with this? So I was going to jump right in to an internal install, but it looks like I will lose data for my apps. Is there any advantage to downloading CM7 instead of 10? I ask only because I found a good site with good (newbie) instructions on doing CM7, and the site I found for CM10 has some stuff that I don't completely understand.
Really, I don't have great aspirations for using my NC ... I just need wifi to work so I can access my apps, and that's the only reason I am looking at flashing a new ROM. Is this the only way to go to fix wifi?

For SD card cm10 installation (use Sandisk class 4 or 6)
Here is LeapinLar's thread to get you started http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1941858
Get the latest CM10 nightly here http://get.cm/?device=encore
Make sure to use Gapps 20121011.
Here are the steps involved to make a bootable sd card:
Unzip the ...Rev5.zip
Use program Win32diskimager.exe to write the above unzipped image to SD card
Copy latest Cm10 nightly to sdcard (do not unzip)
Copy gapps 20121011 to SD card (do not unzip)
Safely eject SD card from computer
Backup your Nook apps/data to separate SD card or computer. If you have Clockwork Mod Recovery installed do a nandroid backup on sd
Turn off Nook Color
Insert SD card you created above
Turn on Nook color
Watch the Cm10 splash screen come to life.
Have you tried rebooting your Nook color to see if it can attach to your router?
CM7 is dated on gingerbread and 2.6.32 kernel. CM10 is Jellybean on 3.08+ kernel.
If you prefer rooted stock firmware 1.4.3 check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1494901
Many thanks, hwong96! I followed the directions and got CM10 working on an sd and wifi works fine. I am going to take a look at upgrading the stock software and then rooting to see if I can get that working as well, as I prefer the B&N interface/look-and-feel. But in the meantime, at least I have a functioning tablet again. Thank you!

I have been lurking and reading for a couple of weeks now. I bought a used NC with 1.1 and used Autonooter to root it. Works great.
I bought a second NC which had the 1.2 s/w on it. I used the manualnooter process to root it. That works pretty well.
Now I'm thinking about getting into the nightly CM7 game. I'm wondering is there anything I need to watch out for with the 2 NC's I have if I do this. Do I have to take them back to stock? Can I just follow the CM7 instructions?
Any insight and guidance would be appreciated

You can run CM7, stable or nightly, off of an SD card. You don't have to change anything on your Nooks to do this. In fact, they don't even need to be rooted. Running CM7 on the SD card will not change anything on the built-in memory of the Nook.
Look for the "size agnostic" thread, follow the directions, and you're good to go.
ps. I enjoy your music.
yeah, just follow the instructions on flashing cm7 for the first time. and make sure you understand the CWM instructions. you may want to try a stable rom for now. there are lots of battery and kernel issues right now with the nightly builds. but not to fear the devs are working hard to fix them. just stay with the stable's and your be fine. I hope this was helpful...

Well, I went ahead figuring "How hard could it be anyway?".
I did the nand backup with CWM 3.0.2.8
I then ran ROM manager V4.2.0.2 from internal memory.
I choose the option that allows me to download ROMS.
I chose CyanogenMod, and then chose 7.0.3.
I downloaded the ROM
I then chose Install ROM from SD card
It asked me about clearing caches, etc and I chose the default values already checked.
It installed without errors.
I rebooted and it got to the last part of the boot process where the word "color" is rapidly changing and stayed there indefinitely,
I rebooted with CWM on the SD card and tried to reinstall the Manualnooter I loaded on this NC a week ago.
Rebooted. Still hung up.
I copied my nand backup to the CWN SD card and chose restore.
It booted back to my manualnooter install successfully.
So I'm successfully back where I started.
Can someone help me understand what I did wrong on what I need to do to make it work? Thanks
Not sure what went wrong, but I would also suggest trying verygreen's size-agnostic approach. You keep your manual nooter and can run CM7 from an SD card to see if you want to go all the way and remove the stock BN software.
Try this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
Or, if you want to go crazy, you could try racks' dual boot SD card image of Phiremod 6.2 (a variation of CM7) and Honeycomb. That's what I'm using and Phiremod works great (aside from battery life ) and honeycomb is just plain slick to use.

I loaded CM7 7.0.2 stable and was able to get it going. Thanks
i got a 1.2 nook in today.
wrote an image to my 8gb to get clockwork recovery. after that, i used manualnooter.
reboot and everything looked good. i could open android market and whatnot but since im an android cell phone user, i wanted cyanogen mod on my nook
flash the latest nightly/gapps but couldnt get past the "touch the android to begin screen." did the four corners trick and it worked but there was no android market and googletalk wouldnt work (i would press it and it would auto close itself)
then i flashed miui, got a bunch of FCs.
then i flashed phiremod, same problems as the latest CM mightly.
my questions:
1. whats the most stable rom?
2. im use to everything working on my phone, are there just some things that are not going to work on the NC? obviously text messages and phone arent.
3. how do i get android market on there (so i can get google maps/youtube/etc)?
thanks
You probably need to repartition your nook if it came with 1.2 pre-installed

i dont know why but im about to partition it
any reason why i should be doing this?
The new nook colors have a different partition system than the old ones. Sometimes affecting installs.

[GUIDE] Install CM7 + Clockworkmod to EMMC - ALL NOOKS! (Updated:7/30/11)
eyeballer said:
This guide is intended to take you through the (mostly windows-based) steps needed to replace your internal nook rom with CM7, gapps and clockworkmod recovery 3.2.0.1 (latest as of 6/5/11) all on EMMC. This will work coming from any previous rom, including the latest stock software (excluding dual boot set ups, not supporting that here), no previous rooting is needed for a new nook, however don't forget to boot stock and register the device before flashing to CM7.

sweet! repartitioning did the trick. market is up and running
however, some applications i cant install. i can search for it and click on it but there is no install button => Facebook, Groupon
did some google searching, says its a problem with the new market. can anyone confirm this? one solution was to force stop/clear data on the market application. tried that and it didnt work. help would be appreciated
edit:
found a thread for my problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1207811
for future nc searchers: uninstalled market updates under manage applications in the settings.
Hey all, I'm running CM7 7.1 rc-1... I just installed dalingrin's latest oc kernel... And it killed my wifi.. It's really bugging me. My nc is currently oc'd @ 1200.. With a min speed of 600. Is the kernel killing my wifi? Or is it the overclocking?
Thanks in advance.
Hi,
interesting. I had the same experience. My case went a little bit further than that as I lost my whole config after trying to fix it ... long story short, after fixing my nook and re-installing back to stock (1.0.1 then upgrade to 1.3). I tried again, installed same distro on SD but I put all the zip files at the same time on the sd card for install (7.1, gapps and OC); everything got installed and no more wifi problems. I also upgraded to full nightly 212. So far, so good.
I also noticed something: after testing a few apps, I would get a weird behavior. In rom manager, fix permissions would fix most of the issues.

update:
I tried to install the stock firmware by deleting cwm, repartitioning boot to stock (after installing stock 1.1)... now it just loops on the "nook color by bn" screen. any suggestions?
Follow the instructions here and start all over. Choose nightly 200 or higher and make sure you use the latest version of CWR (3.2.0.1): http://mrm3.net/nook-color-how-to-install-cyanogenmod-nightlies/

brilliant! that worked wonderfully. for future reference, the latest version of CWR seemed to do the trick. thanks!
I have two nook colors with cyanogenmod 7 on them
but one was never quite right and didnt have google apps on it.
I never really messed with it but today I thought I would fix it.
originally I wanted to upgrade to jellybean for fun since this is one I have just to mess around with.
But I wanted to roll it back to stock first.
All the directions I saw for that were quite old and none of the downloads worked.
I tried some one SD card and it didnt really work.
It wasnt connecting to wifi and clockwork mod wasnt working (rom manager was there but it said clockwork mod wasnt working and I couldnt update it because wifi wanst working).
I got all that sorted out
then I decided to try to upgrade to the latest CM from rom manager
but I would just give me download errors.
so I downloaded the file directly to my SD card from the clockwork mod website
I was able to boot into recovery and it backed up my nook
but when it tried to install the CM it said there was an error and aborted
not my nook when you power it up shows "touch the future of reading" then it goes to the "android_" (that pops up before the CM7 logo) and it just sits there
any thoughts on what to do?
Should I just make a bootable SD card with CM7?
(how can I do that...im pretty rusty on all this, I havent messed with it much in a year or two)

You are way out of date. If you want stock back, look in my tips thread linked in my signature. Look at item A15.
And ROM Manager is not really the way to update these days. If you want to put CM10 on internal memory, follow eyeballer's guide which he just updated. If you want to put CM10 on SD, follow my updated guide also linked in my signature.
Sent from my Nook HD+ Running CM10
I've previously ran cm10 on my nook hd+ via an SD card (thought it was safer), after a few days I turn off the nook, turn it on the next morning and voila! It bricked itself, the screen boots to black nook screen then reboots. Didn't matter if there was an SD card in or not. Sucks for me, but before we go blaming me let me just state I did the same thing to a Nook tablet for years without issue and someone know what I'm doing.
Here's my delima, first my new nook hd+ is slow, its annoying. I have all the apps I want thanks to nooks update with google play, but its still slow as hell. Is putting android on it going to make it much faster, or is it just the limited hardware the nook hd+ has? Is it better to root the nook or run from SD (better being safer). Finally is it any safer to just by a N2A card. While I'm no programmer, I worked IT and know how to follow directions, and there is plenty of guides on XDA. I heard that the Nook hd + was pron to bricking when loading android, is it different now?

Thank you, I really could have used you six months ago (and will save this post in case a future issue arises), luckily I was able to return my nook under warranty. However, ever since I've been to nervous to try android again and have been running stock. But lets face it stock is slow. My question is, is android noticeably faster on the nook and has it gotten safer (ie less likely to brick) for the nook hd+.

Stock is kinda laggy, I tried it some days ago with the lates plain release.
I feel like I have the best experience with the latest CM 10.2 nightly build.
There was a possibility to brick your device with the MAG2GA chip and firmware 05 combination.
Since I have the firmware 06 combination I flashed ontop of my CM 10.2 this little kernel -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2562499
It made my screen more touch sensitive and trim enabled (not sure if 10.2 is trimed by default!) -> Better speed.
If i helped u hit the little thanks button :highfive:
first of all, stock nook is also some kind of android( and is a sucky android!!!!). CM 10.2 is now the most stable android version for NOOK hd +.
second, nook is not born to brick, Not matter it is on stock or CM. ONLY if your nook hd plus is using a faulty chip, AND you run CM 10.2, AND you turn of trim using a trim-enable kernel, then you may have the CHANCE to brick your nook.
You want to know about faulty chip (MAG2GA chip and firmware 05) ? Go to develop section and find a threat talking about TRIM and chip.
Last, go intall CM 10.2 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2389813 and follow instructions from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2317500
just use CM 10.2 and 4.3 gapps you are good to go!

Thanks, I am going to make sure I chip is not faulty and I think i'm going to load cm10.2 on it. Is there a major benefit to replacing stock vs just running cm10.2 from an SD? Also do i download the nightly build or ovation?
Running CM on emmc is generally smoother than running it from an SD card. Of course, you lose the ability to dual boot, but the smoothness and stability makes it worth it IMO
Sent from my Nook HD+ running CM11
run from an GOOD SD card could prevent brick due to faulty chip and you may go back to stock anytime you want. But the performance would be highly depend on your SD card quality. Lots of people use a class 4 or higher class sandisk SD card.
be aware that is you run cm rather than stock, the nook app could not be download from play store. But you could download the app online ( any other resources) and install it by yourself.
If stock is not important to you, you could go ahead and install CM 10.2( no need for cm10.1, cm 10.2 is very stable now) on internal SD card, which is also call "EMMC"
And because the official cm 10.2 is not trim-enable( trim may cause brick), so you are always good to install cm.
To sum up
1. there is not harmful at all to install cm10.2 if you follow instructions.
2. you could chose to install in EMMC (which would lose stock rom), or install in SD card ( you could still keep stock rom and use it at anytime)
I personally back up stock rom to my pc and install cm10.2 to EMMC. It is the most responsive rom for my nook
Just wanted to say I've been running CM 10.2 from a 16gb Sandisk class 4 sdcard for months and been very happy with it.
Sent from HD+ MAG2GA CM 10.2 from SD
Just as a follow up in case anyone was wondering, I checked my nook's chip set and found it ran firmware 06, which If i read right was a good thing. That being said I went and installed cm10.2 on my emmc, and obviously runs a lot better. I used an android app "watchdog" to monitor the cpu usage. Nook os, running idol, used 60% of the cpu, CM10.2 used .5%.
Only issue I have notice so far is that the nook does not charge when powered off. I turned it off and left it plugged in all night and the charge light never even came on, and batter was at 40%. Turned the nook on and put it to sleep, the charge light came on and it was at 100% within a few hours. Not sure if there is a fix to this?
Also I heard that stock os was able to go into Deep Sleep to save battery life, and cm10.2 doesn't go into Deep Sleep, meaning the battery drains faster. Has there been a fix to this at all?
Finally, it is better to leave Cryogen auto updates off? or on? Just worried and update would go through and mess everything up, kinda like Windows likes to do
Thanks again for everyone's help! Thumbs up for everyone so far!!!!!!
