nook hd+ warm to hot after light use - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My rooted nook hd+ gets warm or slightly hot even after very light use. It is at the lower left back side near the hole. Should i be concerned? I can still return it or exchange it.

Mine does it too. I think based on the teardown pictures that that is where the microprocessor is.
Sent from my HD+ running CM10 on SD with XDA Premium

Mine gets warm in the same spot, both on stock or cm10.

I got the brand new nook HD+ yesterday after I came to know that May 2013 update has provided access to google play.I really like everything about this tablet now , it is right size full android tablet having amazing display, excellent for browsing , reading , videos etc etc
However only thing which is worrying me is the heat which I can feel near the speaker area. It is getting warm with little use only ( browsing, mail checking etc). It gets really hot if I watch video or play any light game.
I also tried doing the hard reset but in vain. Is it a well known issue or I got the bad piece

Just look at this thread of the same subject today:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41261439
The bottom line, it is normal and it is the processor getting warm when you do processor intensive things like video. Not to worry.

thanks for the replying,
however as per my experience with other tablets , nook hd+ is getting more warmer and hot ( even whey I say warm , it is more than what you call normal warm).
By chance I stumble upon your easy install guide for original SD and installed CM10.1 ROM in Sandisk SD card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2169544
To my surprise I noticed that Nook HD+ was not getting too hot as it was the case with the stock rom. I removed the SD card , booted normally ( Stock ROM) and did the same things ( like light browsing, moving from once screen to another, moving icons etc). You will not believe but HD+ was getting much warmer and became really hot when I played the video.
is something wrong with the stock ROM ?

It is possible that stock does not use hardware decoding for playing videos. And that means it must use the processor to decode. Hence high activity and heat. Where CM10.1 may use hardware decoding for some video players, offloading the work from the processor so it runs cooler.
But in any case, I do not think it is dangerous to your device.

What's tough for me to figure out is what is an unhealthy amount of heat? The bottom left side of my Nook HD+ (near the hole) gets warm as well, which I realize is normal. I've pushed the tablet through gaming just to see how hot it can get and the tablet will get warmer to where you can definitely tell its very warm, but not burn your hand hot or anything. I might not even feel it much when I put a case on it.
Even under light usage (like web surfing), that area stays warm. Only when I leave the tablet doing nothing or turn off the screen does it cool down completely. The tablet has not malfunctioned or acted out of the ordinary, even at "uncomfortable" warmth. At this point I'm thinking this is normal, but it's just hard to tell. My HD+ is perfect otherwise.

where's is my great tablet?

Everyone is writing that the Nook Color is supposed to be a great tablet.
I somehow haven't started to enjoy it at all. I'm having massive problems with the touchscreen, when it's cold outside I can not use it inside for a while - till it warmes up again - the touchscreen gets unresponsive and random taps.
I also get random taps sometimes and the tab becomes completely unusable.
I can't find any slick ipad-style apps. And generally can't find a lot great apps, no xfire client (xfmobile doesnt work), no internet radio etc...
There's no real good Os, cm7 has no videos, honeycomb is too laggy, I haven't tried Froyo really...
I want to enjoy my Nook Color, but somehow I can't really - especially because of the touchscreen, it's ruining the whole joy.
I initially wanted to buy a cover for my "iphone cover" for my ipod and then tether the connection to the nook, but im quite unsure, because the thing isn't working well.
I'm actually thinking about selling the device again on ebay and getting a galaxy tab or a dell streak.
A lot of the issues you're describing, touchscreen aside, aren't realty problems with the device, but moreover the fact that Google only really released tablet intended apps 2 weeks ago. The apps you're saying you're not liking or waiting for are designed for Honeycomb, not froyo/eclair which is what NookColor base is composed of.
Just give it time man, the awesome will come

Anyone who is telling you it's a great tablet is exaggerating... It's always going to be an eBook reader first. With this community it can become more but it is sold solely as an eBook reader.
I've got no problem with it being a ereader primarily, i was actually looking for an ereader when I found the Nook Color. But if the touchscreen is so bad sometimes that I can't even flip the page, or it starts zooming in and out randomly, my reading experience is also not so splendid anymore.
I'm going to try one last thing - going back to stock 1.1 and then I'll give Froyo a try.
huh
Sounds like you're in need of a hug.
Who cares if you sell it on ebay and buy a tab? Do it and enjoy, don't whine here about it.
I haven't tried it yet, but by most accounts, you have skipped the best os. Nookie Froyo is supposed to be the most useful and stable os available (completely stock is more stable though). I don't think anyone said it would be as good as an iPad. They just said it was much better than the budget android tablets and a great value for it's low price.
Sounds like 1 of these 3.
1. You're doing it wrong.
2. User error.
3. Hardware issues.

Strange,
I thought Pandora actually qualifies as an Internet radio .
Anyway, are you saying that even with rooted Nook and Android Marketplace you can not install any of the internet radio apps? For example, highly popular TuneIn Radio? I haven't yet rooted my Nook but TuneIn Radio was one of the main reasons I was looking forward to doing it. I am not a big fan of Tablet-based games and I prefer to watch movies on my big screen TV, but music, radio, unlimited Web Browsing (hello, Apple ;-) and photo-frame app were my biggest drivers in getting Nook Color over the first-edition Nook.
As for the actual issue... keep the screen clean and put a film kit on it. If you still have glitches, go get it exchanged. If you bought a car and it only ran on 3 cylinders you'd get it exchanged for free, right?

A little bit of research could have prevented your disappointment.
Before buying something, do a Google search on it and see the good and bad points of whatever item you are looking to buy.
Unfortunately, the bad decision was all yours.

Its sold more like a tablet limited to be being an ereader for the time being by B&N, as they have a update promised to bring a market and apps with it.
As was said earlier, this is more a problem with android ifself or the apps not being designed to handle the screen or hardware and issuses this brings (like scale problems or angry birds not showing up for awhile b/c we dont have a cell modem).

Try warming up your fingers and using the screen when it is cold. It is more likely that your fingers are less conductive than the screen is not working.
(Im serious btw, I have the same problem)
The touch screen does'nt like moisture or wet hand. If you go from cold to warm place, you'll get a lot of moisture on the device

I haven't thought of that, my hands are generally cold, when i was outside then they are nearly dead cold - my ipodTouch works perfectly no matter in what condition my hands are, but that's also a different quality.
Is there any way to get a similar film/coating that is supposed to be on the touchscreen of apple devices onto the nook?
Could you tell exactly how cold it was when you're experienced touchscreen problems? Today I used Nook when temperature was around 0 degrees Celsius and the only problem I had was that screen surface isn't slippery enough, so it was hard to play Glow Hockey.
Has anyone really called a Nook Color a "Great Tablet?"
I have mostly seen "best tablet under $300," which it is. I am loving mine, if only because after years of having an iPhone getting to switch Safari for Firefox is a godsend...
i have no problem running the slacker radio app. so no problems with internet radio.

[Q] Nook HD+ vs Asus transformer TF300

I just bought a 32 GB Nook HD+, haven't opened it yet. I bought it for one main reason - read books - epub and pdf. I'll do about 30% - 40% web browsing as well.
I did some research and learned Nook HD+ has the best display. My questions are:
How much better is the Nook HD+ screen in comparison to the Asus TF 300's IPS 1280 x 800? Viewing angle and brightness, I like to read out door under shade.
I also heard that Nook HD+ wifi is weak, how bad is it?
I have a Asus TF 101, I'm satisfied with its wifi. Any body has experience with these two?
Thanks in advance.
Old thread I realize, maybe this analysis will help someone else though.
HD+ was better for me all around.
-I had 2 TF300s over the course of two years and they both became increasingly sluggish doing even simple tasks, and multiple reset/formats didn't solve any issues. HD+ is always lightning quick in comparison, even though benchmarks still put the TF300 as the faster unit
-screen is so, so much better on the HD+, it's not even really a comparison...it's like HD vs SD television
-battery life rocks on the HD+ and lasts easily twice as long as the TF300, I am not even sure standby uses any battery on the Nook
-wifi is fine for me, I really have had no issues with it
-for $150 there is not a better tablet that even comes close in terms of competition with this thing
My only complaints for the Nook so far have been:
-wish it were 1" bigger
-audio is not the best
-mini HDMI would be nice
-Flash is a PITA to install
Funny that you would compare the two...

Up until about a month ago, I was going to buy the TF300. It wasn't until I read something about CM for the Nook HD+ and the lowered price that I actually seriously looked at the Nook. The Nook hardware specs were so good, and the price was really good, too, so I took the leap and bought a 32GB model. Brought it home and rooted it that afternoon.
I can tell you without a doubt I made a great decision. I love my Nook! :good:
I have also owned both, and I absolutely reccomend the Nook over the Transformer. Not only is the screen immensely sharper on the Nook, but it also has much better colors. The Transformer has serious issues with saturation in which its always washed out, regardless of it having IPS tech. My 2 cents...

Not sure what all root does over stock, but I was going to root just to get rid of the awful B&N home screen. But then I downloaded Nova and it took care of that for me. Now for all intents and purposes the Nook is just like any other Android tablet to me.

Nook HD+ Non-Replaceable Battery?

Hi Guys,
I have been looking for an tablet to read my scientific pdf files and it seems the Kindle 8.9 and Nook HD+ are suited perfectly for that case. I was even planning on buying an anti-glare protector to make it more comfortable for the eyes.
The Nook HD+ was more attractive to me, since it is alot cheaper and the display is even a little bit better (in terms of brightness) than the one from the kindle 8.9. Also I like tinkering around with Android.
Since im from Germany I would have to get the Nook HD+ from the UK (which is no Problem, through ebay or amazon), this makes redeeming the warranty very hard though. This normally isnt an issue for me, because I can easily replace hardware parts myself many times..
After comparing alot, I also noticed that the Nook HD+ Battery is NON-REPLACEABLE!
There are many sources for buying the Kindle 8.9 Battery and even tutorials on how to install them.
Are there any for the Nook HD+ ??
This is the only thing holding me back from buying the Nook HD Plus Otherwise it would suit me perfectly..
And 2 last Questions:
1. Is there a working Standalone Android for the Nook HD+ which replaces the crappy B and N android and runs from internal memory??
2. Is there a working standalone android for the kindle 8.9?
Thanks in advance guys!!
I can't think of a current production Android tablet that has a user replaceable battery.
The out-of-production Toshiba AT100 has a user replaceable battery.
The "emmc" install of cm10.1 (see the development section) runs from internal memory.
You are right, atleast not officially.. But for most mass-produced tablets you can buy and replace the battery anyways, even with the ipad!
With the kindle fire 8.9 though, its no problem to buy a replacement battery!
That means, that in 1 year or so, when the battery has run out, I wouldnt need to throw the kindle 8.9 away!
Like this its more of a one-year product to throw in the trash can then
Still, Im strongly leaning towards the Nook HD+
This is from the FAQ section on http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Support-nook-hd-plus/379003760
10. Can I replace the battery in my NOOK HD+?
No. The rechargeable battery in your NOOK can only be accessed and replaced by authorized service professionals.
So yes battery can be replaced.
The battery in the Nook HD+ should be good for two or three years before it needs replacing. Maybe longer as my older Nook Color is over two years old and still has a strong battery.
Yes the is an excellent, standalone, Android for the HD+ If you look at the Android Development section, look at the EMMC install. It is the latest release of Android. There is also a hybrid install that permits you to experiment with stock B&N and Jellybean at same time.
gamba,
Don't know about the battery but if you go with the Nook HD+ and find a good anti-glare screen cover, can you post in here because I want one as well and I'm not sure which one to get.
The HD+ really is a great deal. I love mine, especially now. The screen is phenomenal. You won't be disappointed with it I'm sure.
Andy
Simple solution
Just get squaretrade. It covers non replaceable batteries. Its like $44 for 3 years. Plus you would be covered for other accidents.
Battery replacement
I just found this, they sell replacement batteries for lots of different devices: Nook HD+ Battery Replacement Kit
I'm not an advertisement bot, I have one of these and Cyanogenmod 10.1.3 on it is very stable. It's pretty funny that these guys say that the device (Barnes and Noble's Android) is too slow to consider purchasing, because this device never feels slow to me.
Yes you can
You can replace the batteries yourself. Go to YouTube and search for the video "How to Replace Your Barnes and Noble Nook HD 7" Battery". There's also one for the Nook HD9". You can buy the batteries at Amazon. Sorry, I wasn't allowed to post the outside links.
I got my 88 year old mother a (used) HD+ a year ago for Mother's Day and installed 10.1.3. She uses it mainly for games. She tends to let the battery run down to nothing. Last time she did it, she says it won't turn on even though she put it on the charger for a full day. I'm not close by. I told her to hold the power switch on for a full minute but I haven't heard if that worked. Anything she should try?

If the battery drops to near absolute zero (happens sometimes) you have to plug it in -it will show a battery icon on screen- wait a about 5 - 10 mins, the screen will stay on (it gets hot if you leave it too long, which is also why it doesn't seem to charge much) then press and hold the power button till it goes off, then press and hold again so it starts to boot up. ensure the original charger remains connected at all times during this. If you dont have the original charger use one that is capable of supplying 5v 2000ma or more. It is worth noting that if she lets it stay charging in the with the battery icon showing it not only does it get hot, but it actually damaged the battery on my GFs nook (hummingbird).
I would suggest to your aged mother, that she turns it off when she doesn't intend to use it again for a while.

HD+ Significant Upgrade from HP Touchpad?

I primarily use my tablet for reading and video watching. While my Touchpad doesn't really have issues handling this, it is somewhat bulky and heavy. Would the HD+ be a good upgrade or should I wait for a new Nexus 7? A smaller, lighter tablet (Nexus7) would be nice as I have played around with a Playbook and enjoy the size, however, the larger screen is nice for reading comics.
Factor in build, display, ease of rooting, battery life, size and price, nothing IMO touches the HD+.
I had a TouchPad (kids still use it daily) and got a HD+ recently.
I use it for reading, videos, and web browsing. Similar enough size, bigger than the nexus 7. Personally, the 7" size is too small for me. The screen on the HD+ is great, it's a 16:9 screen vs a 4:3 screen, so it feels taller than the TouchPad, but not uncomfortably.
I miss being able to use the TouchStone, but that was evened out by much better battery life. I just grabbed it, it was at 85% with 6 days of idle.
With the microSD slot I saw no reason to spend the extra $30 for the 32GB version. The device feels nicer in hand than the TouchPad did, IMO. Although I still don't get thr reason for the hole in the corner.
I have kept mine stock except I use Nova launcher. With google play access I don't have much motivation to put custom ROMs on it. I'm a little worried the battery life will suffer. But, B&N did some crazy stuff with the white theming and the back button. Those just haven't bugged me enough yet to throw CM on it.
Great upgrade from the TouchPad at $149.

B&N cheated, they have a terrible wifi driver shipping that drains battery like there's no tomorrow. So their workaround is to turn off wifi when the screen is off.
Enable the same in any ROM and you'll have great battery life too
So far I've been very happy with my switch from a TouchPad to the Nook HD+.
My pros:
Slightly smaller = more portable, lower weight
WAY better screen with nearly double PPI = 256 vs. 132
Slightly faster dual-core CPU = 1.5GHz Dual Cortex A9 cores vs.1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 Scorpion cores
No weird WiFi issues
My niggles:
No wireless charging (not a big dealbreaker)
Stock software is based on archaic Android 4.0.4 - immediately replaced with CM10.1
Only 768MB of RAM is usable to CM10.1
GPU is best suited to a 720p display, but otherwise I'm not complaining
While the speaker quality is good, the TouchPad sounds far better
No camera
I just bought a 16GB HD+ today to replace my 32GB touchpad running CM9. I got tired of JB welding the cracks around the speakers and buttons.
It is definitely a worthwhile upgrade for the price, but there are some issues. Most notably, the stock rom doesn't play nice with 3rd party launchers, and the bluetooth stack is so broken it can't even connect to a keyboard. However, the visual style is well-executed, the stock fonts are far superior to Android's defaults, and it is expandable, which was a glaring oversight with the touchpad.
Also, no camera (not that the touchpad's was ever anything to write home about,) or even a light sensor for backlight dimming as far as I can tell. Speakers are worse, google voice crashes on launch, and it is about as configurable as an iPad out of the box.
With CM10, it is actually a decent piece of kit, albeit just as ugly as cm10 is on any other platform.
I got mine as a replacement for my TouchPad and it's been great. As others have mentioned, the slight loss of screen size is more than offset by the significantly improved battery life, high-res screen, solid stability and awesome development by verygreen. For anyone still on the fence, just do it!
I had a touchpad last year. I would say the nook rooted is a little faster and seems to work a lot smoother than the tp. Its a little slimmer and easier to carry.
Sound isn't as great but its still better than some tablets.

nook has a mind of its own

I had the nook for a few year, I enjoy the books, my wife plays the games. Recently, it starts turning pages without being held, and while playing games it goes to different screens. have done a soft reset with no help, BN tech support says its out of warranty and will not help, anyone have any solutions?
For starters, I would suggest trying a different charger. I have one that is very sensitive to a certain charger and freaks out, yet it is fine on others.

I'm a little late in the game but I guarantee almost 100% that it's the battery. Even if it shows a full / good charge, it's not. My nook tablet started doing the same thing after about 4 years. I ordered a new battery from amazon (not OEM but it works great). My tablet runs good as new now. Try it out. Search for 3200mAh Li-Polymer Battery Barnes & Noble. It's a little lower mAh than the OEM battery, but my tablet will run a good 13+ hours plus or even longer on standby.

See http://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-hd/general/how-to-updating-hd-hd-internal-emmc-to-t2863171 for info/pointers -- it was written for CM11 but the same process can be adapted for CM13 by using the desired CM13 ROM zip file and corresponding GApps 6.0.x package (http://opengapps.org/#).
I agree with Ericco79 suggestion that it is your batteries causing the problem. I started having this problem on my nook running CM12.1 a couple of weeks ago, with apps opening by themselves and the book reader moving through pages by itself. I followed un4tural's suggestion of replacing the original nook batteries with 2 LIS1520ERPC (originally meant for Sony Xperia Z) from eBay for £10. Original nook replacement batteries are now difficult and expensive to source. My nook is now working great again.
