Nexus One hardware issue.

ok it doenst happen when i lay the phone down on the surface and click on the screen it works perfectly
however when i hold it with my right hand and touch the middle of the screen with my thumb
it opens up phone dialer, or appdrawer or vibrante cause it clicks the capacitive button.
when i hold it with my left hand it gets a little bit better but it still does.
if i hold the nexus carefully and touch the screen , it works, when i hold it like this
the things gets better when i put a thick case like otterbox..
is this a hardware issue? ( found similar video on youtube)
my phone is rooted but can i still get a replacement phone?( already put everything back to stock)
and if i do get a replacement, are they going to charge me with anything?
my current nexus one trackball doenst scroll up but everything else works.
How many of you guys got a replacement even though your phone was rooted?

it's a hardware issue...
all you can do is not grip the phone too closely to the edge of the screen. It registers touches even if you are not touching the screen completely. But that to be a problem you have to have giant hands
I've had this happen to me once since I had it from launch day. It did happen with my Otterbox commuter series, and a clarivue screen protector. But I turned it off and on again and it was fine.

no i am not touching any part of the screen. i made sure i wasnt touching the screen.
but it does happen when i hold my phone closely to the edges.
i never had this kind of issues with other touch screen phones..

I can confirm that my device too does this. When lying in bed I browse the net with one hand and try and scroll....the edges of the touchscreen seem to register depression when the chassis is pushed or gripped too hard also.
It's a minor irritation to me, but I agree it is a hardware issue.

[Q] S Pen Calibration

My S Pen doesn't seem very accurate. When I touch the screen with it, it is off by a couple of millimeters. This is very annoying when drawing.
Is there a way to calibrate the screen/pen or something?

Well, that "problem" it isn't that. They need to do that because they want you to see the line that are you drawing.
If you enter in to the options of the drawing pen and change to left handed, you will see how that millimeters move to the other side of the pen. So, 1 2 up and 1 or 2mm left/right are necessary and it is how the wacom screens works. In other side I have tried a lot of wacom devices and this is one of the most accurate.
The only problem that I see it is the pen that if you don't give enough pressure it doesn't works, and if you give much, then it will writes in "bold" rather than skinny lines.
Try to move the pen without pressing it, only light slide and see how it doesn't do anything.
Other funny thing on the wacom devices is that the accuracy is not the same in the center of the screen and in the side of it. Problems of magnetism

It must be annoying always to write without touching the screen with the hand/fingers like you would do if you were to write with an ordinary pen on a classic paper.

The good thing is that u can touch the screen with finger when u write, unlike pure capacitive screen
If u touch the note with finger u will get a mark, ie u can use ur finger to write on the note
If u touch the area of screen above the note, the note app disappears to show the app beneath it and when u remove the finger the note comes back. This is to jot down things from the app beneath it. Hope this makes sense.

I'm curious, are you left handed?
There is a setting: settings -> pen settings -> dominant hand.
I changed mine to left handed (which I am), and when my right handed friend used it, he complained that it was off by a millimeter or too to the right.

Thats not an issue as when the pen is touching (so it's active), the screen will no longer accept any additional touches. So with your fingers, multi touch will be active for upto 10 (I believe) seperate touches at once, but as soon as the pen is touching the screen, it will only pick up the pen and no additional touches from your fingers etc so you can rest your fingers on the screen while you are writing.

The offset is variable and depends on the angle of the pen.
The most simple way to test this and to get used to it, is to open
a S-memo. Then instead of using the line option you choose the
eraser option. Touch the screen and on the screen you see a circle.
Now with the pen on the screen change the angle of the pen and you will see
the tip of the pen 'move' inside the circle. Now get used to the angle of the pen
where the tip is in the center of the circle. Once you are used to this angle your pen will be dead on when drawing.
Remember way back when you learned how to write, it took you days to get used to holding a pen or pencil the right way.
I can recommend the official samsung s-pen holder for a much nicer feeling when using the pen.

I just want to clarify thhis, the pen needs to be touching and in writing pressure on the screen for it to stop accepting input from your skin.

Go to photo editor choose a bright picture choose the pen option from photo editor hold the phone on portrait mode and try to draw on the edge with a smaller tip on the pen then go switch dominated hand on spen and try again and then come back and say this isn't a devs calibration problem or coding or call it how you want. But give attention to

This idea that we need to see where we are writing is just as imbecilic as Motorola's idea of protecting users from rain drops. Back then, it stoped you from playing any games that required you to keep your finger stationary for more than 15 seconds. Here, it makes drawing and writing very difficult.
I don't ****ing see where I'm writing when I'm using a paper, why would I need that on my phone's screen?

I have also problems using my spen. Is it realy normal to put quite much pressure on the pen to write sth.? It's realy hart to dram thin lines without any interruption of the line..... feels as if that'S not "normal"
how about yours? Is that normal?

I don't know if this will help, but my s-pen was off a few millimeters too after an official update. I tried calibrating the accelerometer and gyro and the s-pen became accurate again. I'm not sure though if this indeed did the trick or if my mind was just playing tricks on me.

Thanks, I'll try that, too. But my Problem primarily is not the millimetres off, it's the pressure needed to draw sth.
I also wrote Samsung's support yesterday. I'll see what they say.
I won't flash my phone before I can be sure that it's okay and I don't have to return it.....

iam having the exact same problem..please tell me if you find a solution.
it didnt happen with the pen which came with phone..it had the millimeters away problem..and when i lost i ordered new pen this new pen has more pressure problem..its very hard to draw thin lines

This is absolutely correct... the stylus orientation definitely does affect the point offset.
The problem is (at least on mine) is that the "left-handed" setting appears to do nothing. The point offset is the same regardless of the setting (it's biased for right handed), so trying to write left handed is very hard.
How many people that are having the problem are 'lefties'? If I pretend to be right handed, the offset is perfect (regardless of the left or right setting). This has to be a bug and I'll presume it'll get fixed soon. Because it's really quite intolerable as a leftie.

Today I upgraded my phone to Criskos rom with Abyss kernel and all accuracy problems are gone for me.Never had problem with pressure.

[Q] Problem with display / S-pen??

Hi guys
I am not sure if this has been posted before, i did a quick search but nothing shows up.
Sometimes If I hold the pen close enough (but without touching) the screen would annoyingly picks it up. The problem is way more apparent if I hold the phone upside down, with the screen facing downwards and holding the pen inclined at an angle. Is this a common problem?

Wacom styluses are magnetic based, not capacitive, so technically it doesn't need to touch the screen. You can place a piece of paper over it and trace images for example.
I can't reproduce what you are seeing though. If I open s-memo, and place the stylus in contact with the screen with no pressure, it doesn't trace.
Just watched the video - holy cow, your pen is nowhere close to the note. wow. it looks like it's a good 1.5 cm or so.

Can not reproduce this on my device. Sounds like some electronic magnet issues or perhaps some other pen?? Anyways, sounds like you should get your device replaced unless you wish to keep it as a Magical Note ;-)

Faulty Pen
You have a faulty pen! Your pressure sensor from pen's tip is defective, jammed, or maybe only the white tip is physically stuck.
Everybody could reproduce this behavior by putting the pen close to screen, with memo app running, and applying pressure on pen's tip with your finger/nail.

So it's normal for the S-pen not to register if there is no pressure applied despite contact? Because that is what is happening with my s-pen. There is contact, no pressure, and it does not register. Is this how it is suppose to work?
Also, does the S-pen have a very faint click or sound when applying pressure like it is activating a pressure sensitive "something".

I contacted Samsung for replace the Pen, but they told me that is the first time they receive this type of problem.. so.. they will tell me something after some check..

Same problem for me, noticed that it's usually after the first time you touch the screen with the pen, like it still thinks the pen is touching even though its not. I'll log it with Samsung too see if they give me the same 'haven't seen this before' line.

I also have the same issue, it's rather annoying.
Will play around and see what I can find out.

Same problem here, appears to be worse when you first start using the pen. They should add a calibration option for the pressure to fix this, i think its now auto calibrating and that's why the problem looks worse at start.

I had the same problem of the S Pen drawing while hovering about 15mm above the screen, I managed to fix it but it ain't easy....
It involves pulling the pen apart and there are tiny parts in there!
I am kicking myself I did not take photos, but I honestly didn't think I would get it to work again...
If anyone is still having probs, I can make up a tutorial of what you need to do.
Atleast you MAY not have to buy another S Pen.

S-Pen repair tutorial- not for the faint-heated
OK...
Now I believe everyone that is having problems has at one time or another accidently or on purpose pulled the rear end out.
From what I have seen you CANNOT replicate this fault without that happenning.
Using a small blade prise the button from the Spen starting at the rear end.
The button will flex and pop out.
Pull the rear end off the pen (again ) now CAREFULLY and into a small tray if possible, turn the pen upside down and the 'bits' will come out, they are:
white nib
tiny O ring
tiny disk with nob one end and hole the other
electronics with button
What had happened on mine is that the o ring, disk and nib had pulled apart so that the disk and the wire-wound rod were always in contact so the Note always thought that the pen was in contact with the screen.
The correct order of bits is:
Nib-Disk-O Ring- Rest of electronics...
you will see the nib has a nob that will locate into the disk, the other side of the disk will hold the oring and all this sits against the wire-wound rod.
NO I AM NOT PULLING MINE APART AGAIN FOR PICS!!!
I put the electronics back in first and then using tweezers put the other bits back in through the button hole before carefully sliding it all back to the nib-end of the pen.
The button then pushes back in and locks.
Now, I a happy to answer questions, or if you like, and if you trust me, I am happy to have you send your pen to me here in Australia and I will repair it if i can.
Mine has been 100% since I did this...

This sounds like an individual problem. For if the Note was faulty as described then it would have been noticed by the 80% in the poll here who like me think the note is pretty perfect.

I agree Gaugerer, it seems though that more and more individuals are finding this problem as more and more notes are sold...
Atleast it is fixable without the exhorbitant price asked for for a replacement stylus.

Hi I am thinking of also getting a Note and thus I went to a store for trying it out since I want to use it esp. also for taling notes during my meetings.
Thus the S-Pen is one of my keys in the decision and it did disappoint me:
I tried writing some text in the S-note app and when ever I finished a word and raised the pen the line is still drawn further and thus the text was not quite readable.
Same happens when I use the handwriting field at the bottom (instead of the screen keyboard). Then due to the lines being drawn further when the pen does not touch the screen, the recognition puts together the words.
So I think the problem is facing on many devices.
Does anyone ever get a better / more in-details answer from Samsung? Or should we one by one contact their support?

I contacted "Samsung Exclusive Italy" but they simply told me that check for this problem and recall me. I Never received a call from them.

S-pen faulty?

hope someone can help me?
I'm finding it difficult to use the button on the s-pen on my new note.
basically to get the back and menu functions to work i have to press way too hard on the button and apply a lot of pressure on the screen with the pen. Even then i sometimes have to swipe the pen 5 or more times before i get the correct response? Has anyone else had a similar experience or know a way to solve the issue before i return the note to amazon as faulty?
The pen works fine when not pressing the button.
Any advice is much appreciated

The back and menu buttons are not meant to be used with the pen, they are for fingers only.
This is a design flaw in my eyes, I use the pen quite often and find this to be quite annoying.

OP meant a different thing with the menu and back function:
I'm sure he meant the according gestures: button and swipe up for "menu", button and swipe left for "back"!
But you'r right, it's a design flaw that the hard-buttons cant be activated with the pen as well!

what you experience is the manufacturing lottery of samsung! i owned a lot of notes so far, and besides that screen quality differs MASSIVE (see according threads) also the pressure sensitivity of s-pens differ a lot!
on some devices i had to press the pen really hard to the screen, on some it notices the pen before even touching the screen!
but i have good news as well: this is mostly pen dependent as i found out! you can try to disassemble your pen and re-position the coil (as it's the reason for the different sensitivity) in it, or try another pen!
edit: even if the pen works fine without button press, your problem is still the pen. pressing the button does nothing more as changing the response to the inductive field from the screen, either by adding some resistance or by shortening some wires of the coil

If I'm reading you right, this means that any pen-issues are just the pen and that I shouldn't worry about the digitizer being defective on the phone, correct?

Hi tml, thanks for the insight.
You're right i did mean I'm having difficulty with the gesture behaviours when pressing the pen button and swiping to simulate the back and menu functions.
I think I've seen a post on how to disassemble the pen, but would be worried it will void the warranty. however as I'm in the uk, returning my note to Amazon.de (saved money buying from Germany) for the sake of the pen does seem a lot of hassle so i might give it a shot.
I Suppose i could also buy a spare pen off fleEbay and see if it makes a difference?

Lol sorry, yes I misunderstood the OP.
I remembered me trying to use the hardbuttons with the pen when I first got the Note and saw him writing about pressing too hard and applying lots of pressure...
I rarely use the gestures since touching the buttons on the device is faster for me than looking at the pen in search for the button, pressing it and doing the gesture.
I got one of those new pens with the grey button so its quite easy to find it (compared to the old pens with black buttons) but being able to find it simply by touching the pen would be much better.
They should have changed not only the colour but the surface of the button too.

correct! as to my findings the differences are MOSTLY s-pen related, same s-pen on different device gives almost the same result! the differences could be explained by the calibration of the screen (although no user-calibration is available the screen IS calibrated in some way. you can notice that by turning the "auto rotate" on and off when the pen is misaligned, it will get better through that!) and the hardware differences. The second one I could observe in changing the pen!

buy a s-pen holder at amazon. this is a holder PLUS a "standard" s-pen! mine from amazon had a grey button (as some other users reported that new batches of the phone come with grey ones) and worked much better than the one which came with the phone!

take a razor-blade and make some "lines" on the button! for me this does the trick!

[SOLVED] S Pen Screen Pressure

Does anyone know if there is a setting somewhere to increase the touch screen pressure sensitivity when using the s pen?
I have to press quite hard with the s pen (not when using my fingers) and am worried about damaging the screen. I've see other people using their pen much more lightly and the screen responds well for them.
I know there is a potentionometer (sp?) inside the s pen that is supposed to increase sensitivity but I'm not sure if it's the same as adjusting the actual pressure sensitivity. I've seen conflicting advice on whether the button should be turned clockwise or anti-clockwise. I don't get any ghost writing on my screen when hovering over it and the air view works as it should, it's just the amount of pressure I need to put onto the screen to make it work with the pen.
Also, does anyone know what the other button is for in the s pen? I mean the one farthest from the nib of the pen.

Solved
If anyone is interested who has the same problem all I did was turn the second potentionometer 90 degrees anti clockwise. It was tricky as it's underneath the plastic clasp but if you use a small pin and take your time it eventually turns, little by little.
The first button seems to be for hovering sensitivity, the second is for pressure sensitivity. You can calibrate it to your liking.
Mine is working perfectly now.
