Hey guys, just wondering what your opinion is on how this locked bootloader issue has affected the potential development of this phone. How bad do you think it really is? Countless people have returned their phones. I'm sure many potential devs have strayed from this phone or HTC as a whole due to this issue. This is a damn good phone as stock, who knows how much better it could be if it were unlocked from the start. What do you guys think the development will be like once it does get unlocked?

I've gotta think it'll pick up. The Inspire was the only "4G" HTC phone for a long time so I can't imagine HTC coming out with anything new on ATT for a little while at least so I gotta think if things do get rolling people will come.

I sure hope so, but it is depressing to think how many people we have already lost and how much potential devlopment is lost. I'm not sure how big of a factor LTE is to people though, considering it isn't widely available. Not sure when the next AT&T HTC phone will be coming out, but locked bootloader or not, this thing is a beast and is getting ICS. I really don't see a better AT&T phone out right now. Samsung Touchwiz is boring, and so is the Samsung development. There's just so much more devs can do with sense.

I'm kicking myself because I keep telling myself I'm just going to pay full retail and get international devices. I may still look for an Evo 3D or something, but although I'm in a non LTE area I can't wait for it to arrive.
I'll stick with this device and learn to develope for it should the day ever arrive. I'm sure if we ever get root, more devs will migrate. It is a truly capable device and a huge step from my tp2.
it will pick up some if the BL ever gets unlocked.
It really is sad that htc/att are dragging their feet on this. They are losing customers every day, I'm returning mine tomorrow. I really like the vivid but am a flashaholic. I have an amaze also and it doesn't really have much dev attention. I don't really understand why, it's also a great device. I honestly would probably be keeping my vivid if I didn't have the amaze, I'm a fan of the sense ui. I'll be giving the nitro a test for the next 30 days, it should be easy to root with super one click but as with most att devices it will probably take 3 weeks or so just to get a forum for it since it's not a Samsung device.

Could you return the Vivid, get another phone, and then return that phone and get a Vivid again? I'm just curious on how AT&T's return/exchange works. Is there a limit of some sort?

Yea, that's what I would probably do if I didn't buy my phone off-contract. Who knows when the next HTC phone on AT&T will come out. The last high end one was the Inspire and that was months and months ago. I think it'll be tough for these people that have always been with HTC to just switch and stay with another brand for a long period of time. Samsung UI is so boring it's not even funny.
Hmm right now I have a Samsung Captivate and I'm either going to the HTC Vivid or SGS2 and right now it seems like the Vivid is not the best option.
I flash ROMs weekly on my Captivate. I guess I was still ignorant and didn't know about HTC's decision to not keep the bootloader so open, like they promised.
Looks like the Samsung SGS2 is the better route...
I picked up a skyrocket because of the locked bootloader but as soon as its unlocked ill trade it for a vivid no doubt. HTC is good with making phones

In the development section seems root will come soon. Now the question is who.is stil planning on returning the vivid? I have till Monday I bought it a launch. I'm still debating especially with root seemingly coming in some time now from what's been said in think tank in development section.

Not sure how soon it will come, but it's nice to know someone is working on it at this point. I've always favored root rhough XDA as oppose to through HTC.
I think I'm keeping mine. I don't like any of the other phones. Not a fan of Samsung. This phone will be awesome when it is cracked.

keeping mine. stock its not bad, and rooted will be epic! i'd consider the SG2, but for $100 more, it doesnt seem like the right deal... loving the vivid!
Mines going back tomorrow for the nitro, I won't miss it too much since I also have an amaze 4g. The wife doesn't understand why I need 2 hi end phones but what she doesn't realize is that come march I'll have 3 and in July I'll be adding another. If the vivid gets perm root and unlocked with s-off I'll probably get another one. I love the phone and the screen is one of the prettiest out there in my opinion. Hopefully it won't take long to get things moving on it, if htc doesn't keep their promise the amaze might be my last htc device unless if they were to bring a rezound to att, if that happened I'd be like a kid at Christmas.
Best of luck to those keeping it, it really is a great phone but I see the word HD in a device name and I start slobbering all over myself.

I'm Keeping Mine
It does what I need - phone calls, texting, web access, running apps I've installed. Except for a couple of random reboots (none recently) and one system freeze (pulled the battery) over 30 days, I've had no real problems. It's fast when I have a good data connection, and I don't think it's the phone's fault when I don't. I did give AT&T a list of issues for their survey, but overall, I'm satisfied.
As for the Carrier IQ issue, any phone I get from AT&T (except for possibly the iPhone 4S) will have CIQ software on it. Rooting, when available, may not be totally stable yet for any of the new LTE phones. The best solution for me is to keep my communications plain vanilla, which I do any way, so there's nothing that I need to be worried about. I do want to CIQ stuff off my phone if and when there is a safe way to do it.

as for rooting LTE phones, i guess you havent seen the GS2 Skyrocket forums? its rooted and has custom roms.
I have 211 confirmed receipts so far from those were lied to and are joining the class action suit.

Our own Gsleon has been talking with Evil_Devnull a little bit. Evil is working on rooting the HTC Rezound (which is nearly identical to the Vivid). So as of now, keep on the lookout for the progress with the Rezound root, because that could very well translate to when/how we Vivid owners get root.

Went in to return the vivid tonight...
I didn't.
Quite simply, there is no viable alternative.
The skyrockets screen is horrendous and build quality is scary.
The nitro has the most beautiful screen I have ever seen but it is so laggy, unresponsive and jittery it feels like am entry level Android device, plus even with an unlocked bootloader devs hate LG so who knows what roms will ever come out for it.
So I sit... And pray someone crack this thing.

So with the Nexus 4 around the corner, I'm sure a lot of us are wondering if we should keep messing with this phone. The Nexus 4 is 300 bucks for the 8gb version, so you could sell this phone and get 150-200, and cover the rest. It is completely unlocked and has higher specs all around than this phone (besides no LTE which may stop me from buying it). So I was wondering how much of this community will stay with the AHD. It's a great device, especially with the new battery, but is it worth not be able to flash as many roms as possible to it? Let me know your opinions and help me make up my mind! If I do decide to get it I will have a AHD with the battey mod, otterbox, TPU case, hdmi, and Zagg screen protector for sale lol. But seriously anyone open to speak their minds? I don't know what to do!

Given the lack of a working recovery at this point. I'm giving serious consideration to picking up a N4 as my primary, and keeping my AHD as a backup.
If you read the reviews on the N4, in spite of the newer hardware, it still gets spanked by the One X, and the S3. HERE on Anandtech.
Knowing that my phone spanks both the OneX as well as the S3 like a red headed step child, it's going to be tough moving to a somewhat slower phone, but having a working recovery to backup, and flash my ROMs as updates occur is much more important to me

Ah, do you see any chance of us getting the bootloader unlocked? It looked like Matt was making good progress, I'm guessing that is when he bricked his phone, although I dont know for sure. Or do you think this phone will end up getting left behind completely. I really like this phone, but I am tired of moto already. Seriously, coming out with a dev version 4 months after the retail???? With NO word it will ever come out. That is absolute bs. At least let us trade in out retail version for the dev version (obviously with a small upgrade fee, maybe 50-100 bucks). I would be fine with that and it would be do able for them.

I don't know wtf Moto is up to lately?!?
I was reading that there's a "brick wall" between Google and Moto, meaning that Google bought them for their patents, and they refuse to show any bias towards them in fear of pissing off other phone manufacturers.
I sure wish Google would rethink this strategy, and start building phones that really blow anything else out of the water.
They have the OS, and they now own a company that has the "potential" to build the best phones out, yet they keep frigging things up.
I know I'll never purchase another Moto phone until/unless they start rethinking their strategy, and at the very least stop encrypting the signatures for the bootloaders.
Just my .02c

From reviews, it suppose to be pretty high quality. Also is suppose to feel nice in the hand. With that said, still a good point and something to look for.
LG's build quailty is under-rated. Same as with any hobby or whatever you call this phone obsession. People look at price and give it a bad name. I think LG started turning the corner with the Nitro. It was a solid phone. Nothing compares to Moto though with build quality. But I think LG beats Samsung and HTC.

I'll definitely be sticking with the Atrix HD. I was a flashaholic on my Atrix 4G so I was disappointed that this phone has a locked down bootloader. On the other hand, I've had absolutely no complaints about this phone especially where battery life is concerned with the EB40. Having all the power that this phone has to offer with excellent battery life is just what I needed. This phone has completely replaced my computers altogether. As for the bootloader, Hashcode has already done tremendous work on getting safestrap working for our devices. Why worry about a locked bootloader when we can get around it with safestrap? Isn't the point of an unlocked bootloader to get a custom recovery for flashing and isn't that what safestrap hopes to do without the need for unlocking the bootloader? I won't be giving this phone up anytime soon and I look forward to getting a Paranoid Android build going for it.

Don't worry, in the US the One X people will have to wait 6 months for the update you linked. Surely by then the US carriers will have released the 4.2.2 update for the HTC One. Surely!
Well, it's supposed to be in Sprint's hands right now. Problem is, they say it's up to HTC. You know how the story goes. It'll get here when it gets here. Sprint will probably update the EVOLTE before the One.
That's Taiwan. We can only use that as a reference point, nothing else.
But I think this is just getting friggin ridiculous. Maybe there's a serious bug in the update like battery drain and only the US carriers are caring enough to resolve it with HTC?
Lets be honest here... There is a reason Samsung is WINNING! How far can build quality and sense get you when post support sucks ass. Flagships are being killed off by HTC after a year while Samsung updates OG EVO status devices. The GS2 shares the same OS as us for gods sake... This is ridiculous.
I've always been one to steer people away from the plastic GS devices, but you can't deny they are future proof in getting them. I'll have to definitely wait on next year's flags instead of dumping money day 1 like I've done the last 2 years.
And for the fanboys that say... Leave the one... No I will not. I'm NOT saying it's not the best device, but you can't deny post support sucks on our end.

Well, if we're being honest. There is a reason Samsung is winning, and it's called marketing. It most certainly is NOT because HTC phones are slow getting such minor updates like 4.2. Most people don't know anything about it, and it's not even close. The only ones who really care that much are the people on XDA who root and run custom roms, and we are the minority by a HUGE margin.
Honestly, it's even smaller than that, because some of us who root and run custom roms could still care less about this update. It brings next to nothing for a lot of us. Kernel and the ability to run 4.2 roms will be fun...but not that many people care all that much. We all know how annoying it is, it does suck..but it's definitely not the reason why Samsung is winning lol

I mostly agree. Remember when people used to call whatever android phone a Droid? Now they say galaxy, even if it's not a Samsung phone. They certainly did something right with the brand name.
Hopefully htc will stick with the One moniker and recover lost customers
It is kinda nice to be the only one among all my friends to have a One while all my Galaxy friends envy my One and say they should have got that instead

Am I the only one not seeing a problem here? HTC is updating a phone that's a year old with the 2nd latest OS version. If anything I would say we should be excited about this.

Excited about what? The One X deserved the update without a doubt... They should have done this without even thinking. Problem I have is... Not even the DEV edition HTC one which is unbranded sold directly from HTC is still on outdated OS regardless of how minor the update is. If the update is so minor... Why do we not have it? Why does the DEV edition NOT have it officially? It makes no sense that this phone was release 4-5 months ago international and they just not got the update. Ours was released 3 months ago and no update in sight. Call it what you want, but I dare you say POST SUPPORT from HTC is better than POST SUPPORT from Samsung?
NO I'M NOT GOING TO CRAPWIZ so please don't make this cool story useless replying that

Sprint is holding it up at this point, not htc. I'm pretty sure tho that Sprint is forcing htc to make some signal improvements, since a lot of people complain the S4/3 has it better due to the plastic body.
No source, just my thoughts. No other imaginable reason why we haven't gotten the update

What I have been thinking is once Verzion starts selling the HTC One, which comes with 4.2.2, then u.s. carriers will be like oh I guess we can update now haha that's what I'm thinking.. but even of they don't, I've herd that since Verizon is CDMA, we will be able to port it fairly easy!

This could be close. Verizion usually wants something "exclusive" when it comes to the phones they carry. They may be the only US carrier with 4.2.2 for a limited time through a deal with HTC.
Unrelated note, why do people think sprint has the update already?
Since HTC doesn't seem to know how to update my phone and I obviously don't know how to enjoy it, I'm probably just gonna kill myself. What's the point of life if Satan, sorry - HTC, can't provide a menial software update?
Exactly, no point to life without 4.2. I NEED IT NOW.
HTC rep came by today. I asked her about the 4.2.2 update and she said sprint and att wont get the update till after Verizon releases the HTC one. Verizon paid HTC for 4.2 on launch for their release exclusively. She also stated that because of Verizon's deal the other 2 carriers won't be getting the update to test till after the Verizon release. She says from what they've told her in the mettings sprint won't have the ota ready till 6-8 weeks after Verizon launches their device.

this is all i need to hear
im gonna be selling my htc one pretty soon and go unlocked
man remember when the EVO was the first non-stock android phone to get 2.2? that **** was awesome.
If it's true(and we will never know 100%)..Selling update exclusives? If it's true then to hell with HTC's broke ass..Hope they go under. It's just a phone and it's just a pointless update. But it's the principal. This phone has been out for 4 months now and the latest update did nothing for what matters most(radio)..Screw Sprint and screw HTC...
/GivingAcrap
What does that mean?
Holy friggin crap.
You mean the carriers haven't even tested the 4.2 update yet?
Wtf
I severely doubt that's true. Why the hell would a carrier pay to stop other carriers from just not get an update to a phone they already have? Its not like the average person is going to think "Oh, Verizon got the HTC One 4.2.2 update first, so it must be the best network."
Nobody thinks about the software version while buying a new phone. It is pretty much implied that if you buy a new flagship that it will be updated soon.
And I'm pretty sure the Dev edition (American) would have gotten the update by now if this were the case. Because if Verizon is able to stop HTC from updating its undbranded phones, then either Verizon has WAY to much money, not to mention screwed up priorities, or HTC is a greedy a$$ cheapskate.
Most reps, no matter what company they represent........... repeat rumors they hear from others. Time and time again their words are proven wrong way more often then correct, especially when it come to release info. Lets hope this is the case.
My 2 cents is all!!
And Verizon paid HTC for 4.2 I dont know how all this works but since when does HTC own 4.2 ?. Google get a cut? Sounds hoakie to me.

You're all reacting to, and judging HTC for, a random rumor you heard on a forum from a guy who met a lady who works at HTC (not in the update department) and said "..."
Let's be honest tho, the only perfect HTC device I've noticed was OG EVO. Every other iteration has had a serious issue.
Evo3d: gimmicky camera, bloated slick laggy sense, updates damn neat Non existent! Got murdered by GS2 & EOL in just over a year or before I think.
LTEVO: Ugly plastic back (i liked the design, sense 4 kinda lagged (i liked 4), RADIO FIASCO (worse ever to my knowledge), updates were decent speed tho, & wallpaper bug.
One X: Small ass battery, yellow tint issue, overheating, sorry ass tegra 3, many faulty devices
HTC 1: Gorgeous design, best screen, purple tint camera issue, claims of radio problems (i can't verify), shipped on dated os, 4up camera gimmick.
Personally, I don't think the camera is all that good. I have the people tint issue, & low light pics always blur for me or be mega noised.

See, I wouldn't care so much if we were stuck on 4.2.2 or something. But 4.1.2.....
I wouldn't be surprised if it were true since htc is hard up for money.
I would point out the one thing we are missing from 4.2.2 that we don't have on 4.1.2 but then it would just get ignored

What OS the Galaxy Nexus run? Probably 4.2.
I might get a Moto next time since it is owned by Google, and they might (I hope) concentrate their phones. Not release 10 phones a month. Just a couple a year. And support them. And make them good.
And it seems that only Google is interested in ending the spec war.
I just don't get the thinking behind this. Is this really an exclusive that people in general are going to be impressed by? I can see the ad now... "Introducing the HTC One, now finally available on Verizon with the NEWEST, er... SECOND NEWEST version of Android!"
