I have tried several times (on different PCs and versions) to upgrade from stock Froyo on my P1000 using Kies but it always throws up the same error: "Failed to run firmware upgrade. Unknown error occurred."
So I started reading through this forum and several other guides to find a work-around.
First thing I had to do was root it which worked using SuperOneClick.
Then I found out that I needed ClockWorkRecovery Mod and this is where things started to fall apart. Most guides are for Gingerbread, I'm still on Froyo - I've tried the following:
Using Heimdall Suite in 'Download Mode' to flash the kernel with cwn-5-p1.tar - throws up this: "ERROR: "kernel" is not a vaild argument"
Using Odin to do the same - doesn't see the device when in download mode (but does in normal mode).
So now I'm stuck as I cant get CWR on the device so can't move to the next stage. Any advice appreciated, I'm pretty new to this so please go easy on the terminology!
I don't think you have missed my many posts?
I always recommend Overcome method. But you will need to wipe everything.
The link is in my signature.
Download the guide, download GB-stock-safe-v5 package,
download overcome kernel.
Jump to page 7 of the PDF and flash GB-stock-safe-v5, using Odin that is in that package.
Flash Overcome kernel using Odin again,
and you have your CWM.
Thanks for the reply I will give it a try and post progress.
Excellent, that guide worked a treat, I now have the Overcome ROM 4.1.0 installed.
Looking at the settings tells me I have firmware 2.3.6.
Is there a way to upgrade this even further to Ice Cream Sandwich? Or would it be advisable to stick with this OS?
Isn't that why you look to install cwm in the first place?
You can use cwm to flash any custom ROM.
There are aosp based ROMs around, like cm9, cm10, aokp, etc.
Usually you must flash the ROM, maybe a few times if from GB,
Then flash gapps (the correct one for the ROM version), then reboot.

Second problem,
I tried to do a flash of the newest Cyanogen update (7.10) from the stock Odin, which worked quite well, and it didn't complete. Odin then decided to crash. After that, my phone is now stuck in "Firmware Upgrade Fail! Try using recovery mode". I can't get into Download mode, and I can't get into recovery mode. Any ideas?

EDIT: When I try to use Heimdall, it says that it passes in the Heimdall frontend, but when I look at my phone on the screen, the progress bar never finishes. It just stops at about 90% (estimated)...
If you've installed Heimdall drivers, you will need reinstall Samsung drivers to get Odin to work.

Thanks! I'll try that as soon as it finishes installing. What would the way to install the new Cyanogen mod without bricking my phone be?

Downgrade to android 3.0 or 3.2
I have the same issue but i'm using samsung glaxy tab 10.1 and i want to downgrade to android 3.0 or 3.2, i'm on android 4.0.3 ICS, i used CM9 to root my tablet. I would be very thankful with any help!!
Greetings friends,
I am a tablet flashing veteran and I need your help. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7" T-Mobile (SGH-T849) which I have flashed to CM7 using Heimdall. The flash appeared to be successful, and I used the Clockwork Recovery app to flash the recovery module. Now, no matter what I try, the tab will ONLY boot into recovery. It will not boot to an OS.
I can even use the CWM recovery console to flash a new image, but it restarts back to recovery!
I've been searching for the stock firmware to see if that gives me control, but all of the download links are broken. To make matters worse, this tablet isn't mine, so I'm facing the fact that if I can't recover this thing, I will have to pay to replace it.
I am able to get it to download mode, and I've tried ODIN'ing several images as well, but still, it just restarts to the darn recovery console.
Please help!
Thanks.
restock using Overcome Method:
Go to overcome site
Http://www.teamovercome.net
Read the guide,
Missing pictures can be seen here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20974872
Follow the picture step by step.
Basically to restock:
Download GB-stock-safe-v5.zip, unzip it and and flash with ODIN according to the guide.
Stop there and you will have Gingerbread JQ1
You can continue with the rest, and you will get Overcome 4.1 and you won't regret.
From there you can then try AOKP or CM9, all requires you to have Overcome Kernel with its CWM recovery to flash.

Just in case you don't know, overcome is Gingerbread.
You only want overcome kernel as stepping stone so you have a cwm recovery.
Once you have cwm recovery, you can flash anything, including ics.
Since you are already on JQ1, I don't think you need to follow the whole flashing their stock safe rom, since it is also a JQ1.
just grab the overcome kernel 4.0 tar, and also download ics cm9 or aokp ( your pick, go thier individual thread and read up) and latest gapps, put them on sdcard.
I think you do factory reset first, then flash overcome kernel using Odin.
Then boot into cwm recovery by pressing volume up and power on at the same time.
From recovery flash ics and then flash gapps.

Actually more choices of rom now, SGT7 ICS by cdesai (also recommended) and Gummy (not recommended for now seems very buggy, although it has better theme).
After following priyana's instruction,
Remember, as mentioned in each instruction on the perspective rom's thread,
You will get a strange 'recovery loop' as if it's failing to install. Just go back to recovery mode (power + volume up)
and reflash the ICS-ROM .zip file.
Welcome to the world of ICS.

First, thank you for reading this. I had rooted & unlocked my at&t GT-P1000 using custom ROM 4.1.0 from teamovercom in January, 2012. Today, I like to something new and curiousity that can I install ICS custom ROM. But I am still not confident by reading from here: " http://rootzwiki.com/topic/22246-ro...ung-galaxy-tab-p1000ln-gsm-build-38-11062012/ " (please no quote). Now, I'm asking for your generousity and patient to show me what other steps I need to do to flash ICS custom ROM after follow teamovercome user guide, and my tab still able to make/receive call and I have now, thanks again. Pleae, please, and please reply to " [email protected] ".
Best regard,
Van.
you already have Overcome, so it is dead simple
- download ICS (CM9 or AOKP) and gapps-ics and put in external sd card.
- boot to download mode
- you need to use Odin to flash Overcome kerner tar
- once flashed the tab reboots.
- ignore the robotic voice, just force the tab to off
- boot to CWM recover (press vol-up and power )
- flash ICS (CM9 or AOKP)
- after flashing the system will convert your tab to MTD partition, but it will probably bring you to recovery or stuck at boot.
- force reboot to recovery again
- flash ICS again
- immediate after complete, flash gapps
- reboot
To go back to GB you need to do the Odin restock all over again though.
my father has a stock samsung galaxy tab (p1) running the horrible android 2.2 with touchwiz all over it
he asked me to update the device so it can run ICS
i've done that with my SGS1 which was easy, but now i have a problem.
when reading the guide for installing cm9, its says "This guide applies to a Samsung Galaxy Tab (GSM) on the stock 2.3 release"
my sgs1 was already running 2.3.4, so i just followed the instruction and that was that, but my fathers tab is stuck on 2.2 and has never been rooted or anything
my question is can i simply just apply the steps or do i have to update the device to 2.3 and then follow the instruction
i cant afford to brick the device or i'll never hear the end of it, he love his tab as if it was his child or something
PS. I've learnt how to root the device using (superoneclick) and i've also found how to flash CWM on it, can i do that and then flash the CM9 Rom to it.
im sorry if missed a similar post somewhere but im still a noob at this and i really wanna do it (froyo + touchWiz is a recipe for a crappy device :silly: )

Hi, yes, same thing as before
use the guide, start from page 7 where the Odin screen shot is
GB-stock-safe, with pit file selected and "repartition" ticked.
But hang on, you are from middle east.
Do you have wifi cut out when a SIM card is inserted?
That is a known issue with middle eastern tab due to some wifi country code, that affects all Android 4.0
But I could be wrong, you may not have the issue.
Worth a try though:

all the phones in the house works ok witth the sim inserted connected to wifi
i'll give it a try anyway

how can i flash this one

I've a i9000 and i9300 which I don't really use so I thought I'd do some updating.
A while back I put CM11 on the i9000, and put it on the i9300 yesterday, then I thought I'd root them, that's when the problems started!
Booted into download mode and used Odin to put the firmware on, it reports successful but the phone doesn't boot past the first screen.
I used the CF-Root file -XX_OXA_JVT-v4.3-CWM3RFS.tar but I've also tried JVR, JVS, JVU, JVZ and JW4 out of desperation....with the same results.
I'm glad I started with the i9000, and I'd like to try to recover it, but I'm at a loss now :crying:
That CF kernel is for stock JVT. Hopefully you didn't try it for CM11?
It would last to flash a full firmware, reboot once, and after that you can flash compatible custom kernel (same image contains also custom recovery).
We have quite good sticky threads in this section that can guide you. Which Odin version did you use? 1.83 and 1.82 are the last ones with full compactibility for the i9000.

Now I've just got to start with CWmod and CMmod again. Now it's stock I'm tempted to try and root it.....but that was the start of the problems last time!
After trying to root again and another bricking I decided to give up with the root!

You have to flash a stock firmware and after that compatible kernel for it, as kernel and recovery share the same image on the i9000. So unlike other devices, the recovery can not be flashed separately. That's why the kernel must be compatible with the ROM.
If you have flashed once ROM based on Android 4.3 or higher, your partitions sizes have been modified and you must flash also PIT file together with stock firmware and enable re-partition.

I restored the phone to stock from your instructions at the top of the forum, then tried a rooted ROM.
Everything went fine, although I'm not sure if I had root access (as it worked I didn't bother to check). Then I tried CWmod but it still failed to install, so went back to stock again.....it still wouldn't install

If you use their link (me being lazy did) then it fails, but go to the website and find the image then it works!! It's a slightly different filesize, so maybe a different version?
The ironic thing it that on the CyanogenMOD site it mentions that the phone hasn't got to be rooted to install it, but what I didn't realise was CyanogenMOD it also installs a different firmware...which is rooted!!
At least through all this I'm a bit wiser as to flashing the phone etc :good:
