[Q] Bootloader info request - Motorola Droid Bionic

Ok, so here's the skinny. I'm not an active member, but have been around longer than most. I have experience with a lot of what most of us (xda community) attempt with our devices. I recently acquired a bionic and lapdock which works beautifully with my MoPho. However, I have this Bionic just sitting here, and I cannot do anything with it (yet). I'm offering support to those who are working on a bootloader unlock, or will even take on this task myself if those who are/were working on it will catch me up to speed. Contact me, let's share notes, compare ideas, etc.

I think there may have been one or more efforts/projects to attempt this.
Here's a thread mentioning a bounty/donate and details checking ota servers, and ended a little silly.

Thank you for responding. I aware of the Cheesecake attempts and the bounty. That's why I made a new thread requesting those who were once part of or actively working on this project to contact me. TBH members, Hash, etc. anyone who knows the full scoop on it. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and I may know of a better approach.

New to DX? LOOK HERE FIRST / Help Build DX WIKI Together

EDIT: 09/09/2010
The Wiki is comming along nicely, a thank you is in order to everyone who contributed. Of course it can always be improved, as such I am keeping the original post below. While we still don't have a great following for the DX on XDA we at least have a nice and organized page in which you can find links to the major breakthroughs and how-to's. If you are new to the DX and are looking for a place to begin, thanks to the fine people on this forum the XDA Droid X WIKI (Found Here) is a great place to begin
As new things are discovered for the Droid X we encourage you to add them to the Droid X WIKI, it can always be removed later if need be. It is a great start however. Thank You all, and good work.
From Sleuth255: Just a quick (slightly off topic) note to also say that XDA mods are here to help. The basis of XDA-developers is after all, development, and it is within device specific development forums such as this that all the magic happens. So here is my promise to all Droid X/Android XDA developers using the facilities of this forum: If you need help keeping a development thread "on topic", PM me and I'll place XDA's cosmic moderating powers at your disposal. Obviously, there's give and take here; we're a community based on idea sharing after all, but the point remains: Let's work together to make the Dx something truly amazing.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have more reading to do so I can further acquire "mad Dx/Android skills" without having to resort to noob tactics.
Original Post:
So I have just come from my Droid Incredible... Yesterday as a matter of fact... And could not help but notice the complete lack of organization of all significant breakthroughs for the Droid X. As well as a lack of anything at all in the WIKI.
It actual made me miss the XDA Droid Incredible forum, which was a joke in comparison to the XDA Droid (original) forum... Point being it doesn't say a lot for our Droid X Forum...
SO! I figured I would put out a request to get this forum a bit more organized, even if that means doing so through the XDA Droid X wiki. At least here we can place links to the most significant breakthroughs, etc. I will start working on it myself as soon as I locate some of the more important breakthroughs, such as root, bootloader, Froyo upgrade and downgrade, and any others.
Find the Droid X WIKI Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=File:Motorola_Droid_X.png
I invite everyone to help, after all not everyone was reading the forum from the start, and just for kicks some time, try searching "root" on any of these forums, you might as well just start scrolling through the pages without searching, because you'll get about the same number of results...
EDIT: So I have decided it is not the lack of effort for this forum as much as the number of occupants. Even the Droid Incredible Development forum (which is considered to be a phone lacking development backing) is being viewed by around 200 people at the moment of writing this. Ours (DX Development) currently only has 20 occupants... I have yet to see a phone in which XDA was not the main forum used for communication, perhaps this is the first?...

You are correct.. I am sad as well coming from the HTC touch where the XDA following was huge...
There isn't so much love for the X here on XDA and you are not alone in hoping it changes!
I'll help out when I get back in town tonight. This place is not user friendly.

**EDIT** - I just updated it with some standard info... more will come soon.
BUMP!!!
This thread needs to be stickied!!!
Yeah I agree... Seems like a popular enough phone, apparently not with the devs though. So, I have decided to go ahead and start building my own rom. My first theme is almost done too...

Ill give a helping hand...
I agree, with everyone who has posted so far. I'm bummed that there aren't people flooding these X forums... I'm not great at development or anything, but have done a decent amount of information compiling for the Wiki at the server lab I manage, and would be willing to help contribute in any way I can!
Agreed.
I usually lurk around in XDA, but it is the first place I check out DX info.
I'll help with whatever I can.
NOOB would love to help
Although I am not new to XDA forums, ( I owe my sanity to you guys for getting me through some of the hairy spots in the WinMo days), I am totally new to Android. I started with the HTC Aria, then got tired of AT&T's BS, so I went to Verizon (where I now have 3G in my home!!). I started there with the Droid 2 but I wanted a better screen and the extra memory so I just picked up my Droid X (after waiting 3 weeks) today. I'm excited, but I know that there are deficiencies - such as no update yet for the DX.
I don't know what I can do to help, but I've always learned that the best way to get acquainted with something is to sometimes just dive in with both feet. I'm just a lowly System Admin Manager for an IT company. DROID X excites me and we truly do need to bring in whatever is needed to get our membership to a level that's worthy of Moto's 'flagship' phone.
Just let me know what I can do to help and I'm there - as I said, I owe you guys big time.
Maraming salamat (many thanks),
Miguel
Now that this is stickied... you should change the title and first post to something along the lines of: "Look Here First" "New to the Droid X" "Noob ALERT!!"
Lol, ok.. maybe not the last one but something similar. Then edit the first post to something explaining the wiki or just the link.
It will help out on confusion in the threads and open ppl eyes to things that are going on and getting lost in the shuffle.
The biggest issue I have seen, is that XDA is an HTC forum, and the Devs dont mess with the Motorolla devices. Other forums have devs that work on the DX and that is where the traffic is. P3Droid, Koush and Birdman have completed the most significant breakthroughs, and they are not a part of this forum. I wish this place had more of a DX following too...for now, I stick with MDW.
Well I just recieved my DX yesterday. Thanks to this great wiki and the people behind it, I was able to root and do some modifying with in the first hour of having my phone, and I didn't have to tear through the forums. Thanks for all of the effort and keep up the good work.

I like MDW alot as well, man, but I DO notice that a good number of posts there will link back to something here in the DX forum on XDA. So, it seems that the higher ups at MDW do at least lurk or contribute here as well.

after 2 months, I still want to keep my 2.1 OS (in case I want to start some coding on it & 2.1 is a safe version to test on). But I will definitely upgrade to official 2.2 OTA.
btw, is there a list of reasons in the wiki to root & upgrade to 2.2?
Hi! Thanks for getting this wiki and DX forum organized, CaptainTaco and all! I'm relatively new to Android, the DX, and rooting, and all that entails, and was looking for a place to start... and here I am! Have been hearing about XDA for a while, and look forward to learning and contributing as I can!

Welcome aboard. Just make sure you read everything you can before asking a question. I usually ask Google first before I post in a thread. You can also use the hand search feature at the top of the forum.
I say this cause ppl can get pretty heated for threads started asking questions or posting information that has already been answered or giving.
You can always pm me or hit me up on gtalk. A lot of ppl do and I enjoy turning the light bulb on for ppl lol
I've been lurking since I got my new phone, glad to be here. I'm rooted on 2.2 OTA and have learned some about the signed boot loader and latest updates via lurking and searching different forums each day. The wiki looks very complete as far as I can tell, great job!
Thanks for all the work on the Wiki. Great stuff!
I'm coming up to speed on Android/DX now. Very cool platform. I'll be helping more/developing for the Dx soon.
I may not post here much but I try to pay attention and read as often as I can.

UPDATE (14th June 2011):
We are now over the 10,000 mark.
I have now spoken with Motorola and gotten confirmation that Motorola plan to unlock every device that will get an update in the second half of this year. This will include maintenance & firmware updates, but is still subject to Carrier approval.
The promising sign is that Verizon has already allowed Motorola to unlock a device on their network, the Xoom, which utilizes the unlockable/re-lockable model that Motorola intends on using across their devices.
I'm still looking to work with Motorola in the coming months to help see if we can make this a smooth process for Motorola and the community.
You can read the article here:
http://ausdroid.net/2011/06/14/an-u...witter&utm_campaign=Feed:+ausdroid+(Ausdroid)
Please share this where you can and keep it alive. I will continue to work with Motorola to see if we can get this thing torn wide open.
UPDATE (26th April 2011):
We are now at ~8,700 mark.
Motorola has now responded to me, stating that they are looking at unlocking bootloaders across their devices late 2011.
The article for the story can be found here:
http://ausdroid.net/2011/04/26/the-little-aussie-taking-on-motorola-u-s/#more-8184
We're still seeking clarity around whether this will be for current devices or only future devices.
I couldn't have gotten this far without the support of everyone here. You guys and girls have been a huge support and help me turn this snowball into a wrecking ball.
Please share this where you can and keep it alive. I will continue to work with Motorola to see if we can get this thing torn wide open.
Previous Update (4th April 2011):
We are now at ~7600 mark.
We're starting to slow down from our initial boom, so I have now set up a Facebook page to see if we can wrangle in some supporters that don't use Twitter or XDA.
I will need your help getting this out there. So share the facebook page where you can.
I'm also looking to see if anyone is interested in helping me Moderate the page. Please PM if you are.

Hi All,
I have created a Groubal (online petition) to get a response from Motorola on it's bootloader policy.
>>This petition started for the Atrix, but I made sure that it was for Motorola's overall Bootloader Policy. I have reached 200 signatures in 2 weeks, but now believe it's time to expand this out of the Atrix space and into the larger Motorola Dev community.
Ok guys, we now have nearly 800 signatures, nearly 500 in one night alone.
Keep up the great work everyone, this wouldn't be going anywhere without your support.

It would be even better if we could get XDA to post it as an announcement across all the forums, but unfortunately I don't know any of the administrators well enough to do it.
If you want to champion that for us, that would be greatly appreciate. I'm starting to find myself spread to thin on this one.
Groubal has been attacked again!
Hello Irwin,
Yes indeed...Groubal was hacked once again. We have our technical team and our hosting enterprise working feverishly on this to remedy the problem.
Clearly your petition and all your supporters have touched off serious nerves; and your message has created amazing awareness around the world now.

Just sent this tip to Engadget.com
Please shed some light on the petition by the Android user community requesting that Motorola to unlock the bootloaders on their Droid phones. Smartphones are not just phones that can browse the web, they are mobile computing devices that can make phone calls.
We pay a large sum of money to own these mobile computing devices but we are not able to modify the operating system like any other personal computer that each of us own.

Wireless Tether?

Does the wireless tether app work w/ the Bionic? (https://market.android.com/details?id=android.tether)
To answer your question, No, and seriously, look around before you ask, if this worked there would not be threads on reverse engineering the wireless tether feature, how to get tethering to work and such, these multiple threads are getting a bit ridiculous.

Not everyone is as advanced as me? 1st off I'm not very "advanced", I simply have made a common observation that there are numerous threads on this topic already, which probably shouldn't have been posted in development to begin with, but that would be for a Mod to decide. The point of a forum as far as I'm aware is ultimately the exchange of information, if information of value is hidden amongst dozens of repeat threads, doesn't that hinder users in their attempts to find information that others have posted? Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of the forum? I'm not bashing the OP, I didn't call him/her names or imply he/she lacked intelligence, I answered their question first and secondly brought something to his/her attention that would probably benefit the community if prevented in the future. And it's not just my perspective when facts support it.

You're right. I agree it doesn't belong in development as it does not forward development on the device. It ends in a question mark, should be in General, seeing as the Bionic doens't have a Q&A section for some reason. Or even Themes & Apps seeing as it's about an application.
But, on the other hand, it isn't necassarily true that if it worked there wouldn't be thread on reverse engineering the built-in WiFi HotSpot application. Maybe people don't want a 3rd party application for tethering, so they would use the reverse method. Or they are simply interested in a learning experience.
Both of you had a fault in the conversation. But this is only my opinion. I don't know everything and don't claim to. Just giving my 2 cents on the situation as we've had similar in the Droid Incredible forums before, where I was before here, hence my username.

I did address this. I said it didn't belong here. It should've been in a different section, at the least. Yes, this thread is a waste because of the numerous threads already there.
This still does not stop VZW from monitoring your data use and charging you for it.
The hotspot is still configured to reconnect using the Tethered NAI and is therefore clearly distinguished by the network as external data use.
This is going to take some digging into the OS to figure out and may simply be impossible due to the way network authentication works now for LTE devices.
Users really need to understand that the game has changed in some very fundamental ways regarding tethering on VZW and all the carrier's for that matter.
I've used like 4 times for short period of time and by now nothing changed

I think that what cellzealot is saying is that even though the hack allows tethering and does not show he Verizon page about tethering, Verizon can clearly see the difference in data usage. Whether or not they will act on it right now is yet to be determined. But the important thing to know is that youvare easily tracked.

Im kind of the boat with these other guys. Is there any way to prove that Verizon can't track this and nail you for it later?
Sent from my DB using XDA premium.
What kind of proof are you looking for? The Bionic hasn't been released for a month yet to even see what their response might be to un entitled use of the Hotspot app.
I have already explained in detail in the other thread started by zedomax why this is detectable and why his video showing the RadioComm method of editing the NVM the same way as was done for EvDO devices is both completely ineffective and dangerous.
If you want proof look at the NVM yourself and see the new authentication strings that are different hardware ID elements and different strings than previous non LTE phones.
If you understand network data authentication you will clearly see why this is openly detectable and is using the tethered NAI to distinguish the Hotspot data use.
What don't you see that you need to? If they want to charge you for it they have the means in place t determine precisely when and for how long you were connected and exactly how much data was used during that period.
So how do we get the EPST menu to change the NAI like I did on my old incredible?

Is only the bionic trackable or no matter what phone I use I will be tracked?

What device have you been tethering on for the past 4 months?
My statements are regarding the Bionic which hasn't even been out for a month yet.
Have you been using the Hotspot app or other means of wifi tethering?

State of Development :)

For those of you that have been around these parts for a while, you may remember the State of Development updates that good ol' Gsleon3 used to update us with. These came for us at a time when development for the Vivid seemed to be at a standstill, and for those of you that were here, you remember why. For those of you who don't, let me catch you up a little (and I apologize for the bad feelings that this may drum up, but I don't want anything to get out of control again). So grab a beer and a snack, this may be a long one
It was about April, and development for the Holiday was still in its infancy. There were a few good ROMs being released, and generally, it was a good place to be. Then accusations of stealing other's work, accusations of corrupt moderators, and all around child-like behavior started, and it became the downfall of the Holiday forum at XDA. ROM threads started closing. Then came the bickering. Then the Devs left. Then the users began to play the blame game, and the "let me try to whine my way to what I want" game. All the best devs left and opened up shop in their own little corners of the internet (and I can't blame them one bit), and development for the device was no longer centralized. There were/are still AWESOME ROMs available for this device, just not on XDA. This always made me a little sad. As painful of a place as XDA (or any internet forum for that matter) can be at times, there's sooooo much good information crammed into one site that it has always been my one-stop shop, but that wasn't true any longer. I settled in, I found a home, but I kept a close eye on what else was happening across the interweb's Holiday community. I liked to keep my eye on one project specifically, synergy's CM10 project, because who wouldn't want JellyBean, right?
Now, a little more information for those of you who weren't around.. The original CM10 thread was opened at another site in July, where the project started. Syn put a lot of time and effort into it, but in the end, found it to be not worth his time to continue on a project he didn't see possible to ever be finished (mainly due to the ATT in-call mic issue and video issues), and again, who can blame him? He abandoned the project at the beginning of August. This is where mg picked the project up, and continued it with a few fixes himself, before somehow we caught the attention of h8rift. h8 has been awesome - cleaning up our trees, getting things in their proper home, and powering through anything that gets in his way It's so great to have him around.
Myself, up until October, had only ever had experience with things like making boot animations, icons, editing .xmls in .apks, and some slight .smali edits. Thanks to mg's excellent guide and a crapton of Googling, I learned out how to compile/build cm from source. Then I thought, "I wonder if I could do the same for other JB flavors?" So guess what? I tried, and it worked. Every single question I had along the way (with the exception of a few Ubuntu and git specific questions), were answered by a thread here at XDA. Cool, right?
I am very excited to see new ROMage out for this device...as I'm sure anyone who was here through the "Great Holiday Wars of 2012" would agree, I was pretty sure what we had was all we were ever going to see. Which again, would have been OK, cause there are some great ROMs out there, but I've never been the kind of dude to settle in on the same ROM for too long - that's why I came to XDA in the first place. Now as I'm sure everyone can see, through collaboration, this project is making HUGE progress! I cannot thank mg and h8 enough for keeping it going. This brings me to my last point...
I encourage everyone to participate, and offer suggestions, and share information - that is, after all, what a developer's forum should be about. The wealth of knowledge that's available at XDA is out of this world, but sometimes hiding deep within the threads, filled by off-topic chatter and users who have way to huge a sense of entitlement. Please always keep in mind that the things you're getting here are free. Hours upon hours upon hours of work go into these projects, just to be shared for very little asked in return. Wait, we ask for something in return? Yes - READ, SEARCH, and SEARCH AGAIN before posting. Like I said, there's already a wealth of knowledge here that's incomparable to other Android forums on the web, but yes, sometimes it can be trying to find that information. But it's not impossible. Also - keep an eye on the issues list. There are bugs. There will probably always be bugs. And as long as there are, they will continue to be squished to the best of our ability (though h8's ability is far beyond mine, so let's especially be nice to him )
In closing - PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not let this place become what it was before. So far I feel like the atmosphere around here has been a lot better, but I know how easy it can be for it to slip back to where it was. So be respectful, don't ask for ETAs, and be thankful for what we have - cause what we now have is a TON more options that we had before.
I remember the "Great Holiday Wars of 2012"... it was ugly, didn't even want to visit the site half the time. But things are looking up and I'm glad I didn't return my vivid thirty days after the release date like so many did.

Well said homeslice. Although I haven't been as active in my participation I got the Vivid on day 1 and am really happy to see development where it is today. There were many points I thought the device was basically dead and time and time again it was revived with new life. Hopefully the few left can make sure not to repeat drama mistakes of the past.
And great job on going from a reader to a developer, very well done.
Why is my xda premium app only let me reply/post on certain sections of forums and not development??:banghead:

i think is not fair to close a wip thread to bring a sense 4 rom to the vivid all i wanted to do is help this device users to be on the latest software as i said in the post that was closed i wasn't going to share it to everybody i want it to share it to developers to bring this rom to all users but it got closed for "kanging" which i think is not true since venom team never released a vivid rom even thou the did for rezound which is pretty similar device but cdma and korean's make their work on the rom also to make the radio work which no body here in xda could do after many tries all i want is to help the community and specific this device owners which expect more from this device and we know is capable of running this system and much more please let the development continue we are stuck right know on sense only because someone doesn't want to share their work on other devices which is ok if you are the developer of something and you don't want to share but why stop someone who is trying to help on a device you haven't released a rom I bet that many of the vivid users would like to flash a sense 4.1 rom on their devices

Sorry but we don't approve of the use of our work by non-team members and do not condone the porting of any of our roms to other devices for various reasons. One of those reasons is these roms will never meet the same level of quality and support our users have become accustomed to as such, these roms will never be allowed on xda and will also be refused Venom Hub access.

Btw, we're not trying to be the bad guys here... We're simply trying to protect our property. Perhaps the best way for you to achieve your objective is to reach out to the kangers to find out how they managed to port it over to your device...

That's exactly what I want but there is a language barrier, instead of releasing could you try to make it legit here with your team? Please I know there are really good developers and they can find how to make it legit is all I ask I do not want to make an issue out of trying to help others with this device, this device is capable of running this Rom flawless just like the one x or rezound which in fact is is the same device but cdma could you help us or assign this port to one of your team members?
Or if none of you has the vivid let a vivid developer take care of it please we have really good developers here to!!

This all sounds familiar...the point of this thread...
Let's just drop it. The villec2 should get its jellybean sense+ update soon, and maybe we can port it. Or maybe we can get the Koreans to share their secret. In the meantime, it appears to be elsewhere, so get it there if you must

So, the options are:
1. We remove all of our tweaks from the framework files of a kanged port of one of our roms so that you can use it as a base
2. You find a Korean translator to ask the one who got data working how he did it.
Let's not start more xda drama the vivid forum has already been thru this. Either find someone who speaks Korean to ask to translate or have them remove all of their tweaks like they ask. The vivid has come to far now to start drama over a sense 4 ROM

You don't understand the work effort in removing our tweaks from the framework so you'll need to follow up with the Koreans.
And I honestly hope we don't see any more links to this kang roms, either here or on rootzwiki.

Petition: Grant Galaxy S5 Users Unlocked Bootloader Upon Request

Greetings Everyone,
I posted this over in the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 threads. The original thread I'm speaking of can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2758406
As I am sure many of you are aware Verizon Wireless and AT&T users have yet to receive root. I have created a petition asking for an unlocked bootloader that upon reaching its signature goal will be sent out to VZW/ATT as well as Samsung Mobile. Petitioning has worked for a number of devices in the past such as the HTC Rezound. If you would all please take a minute or less of your time to SIGN&SHARE this petition it would help all of us out tremendously. Below I have pasted the OP from my original thread.
Petition link is at the bottom of this post.
There was some discussion by Russ77 about starting a petition over in the bounty thread, so I went ahead and made one.
You may think this is a long shot or even a foolish attempt, but the bottom line is it could work. The likeliness of this working goes up with every signature. If you are reading this- SIGN! If this really picks up we may be able to change Verizon's policy all together! It takes maybe 3 seconds to sign so lets get this thing moving!
How Can You Help?
1. Sign the petition
2. Get Social- tweet it, facebook it, anything to spread awareness
3. Share this on other forums and websites
Remember, signing this is great but signing and sharing is even better.
Current Goal: 5,000

Dude I'm not sure whether I should laugh or cry while reading this. Let me explain to you what you're asking, you are asking these companies to allow you the chance to break their device, I'm I right? That's like asking the owner of a house to let you in so that you can rob them, I can't believe XDA is being reduced to this level. Here is a tip, why not find another carrier that gives you the freedom to root until devs can figure something out. Over here we're still trying to figure out how to prevent Knox from tripping once rooted. I'm not sure petitioning mobile companies is the way to go.

Clearly you haven't been around the forums long enough? Hence, your logic makes no sense either. If you want more support for our devices, unlocking it for other variants would attract more development and hopefully contribute to solving tripping knox. So, don't try to discourage a movement that's been done on other devices which BTW was sometimes successful. It's a possible cause.
Thanks for the write op!

Based on my limited knowledge of American carriers, this has been attempted before and both VZW and AT&T have little care for such things.
Is there any *recent* example of success?
I remember very clearly that one of those companies stayed that they would not allow unlocking bootloaders, period.
Also I really really doubt you can move Samsung with a petition, they just don't give a crap about them.
Sorry but you might be wasting your time

It's easier to carry such view point, but of course there are those among us who are looking for quick fix while the rest are working diligently in finding a solution, if you believe that taking a petition to these company will be a positive way then by all means go for it, but remember we're talking about companies that don't give a sh*t about what customers think when it comes to granting boot loader access.
Sigh....another petition thread? This will never happen, so don't bother wasting your time. Don't bother wasting more time than you already have. It will not happen. Period.

Ummmm.... The Sprint S5 has had root since the day it came out. Go read some more please....
We buy their devices to do with as we please...period if the bootloader is unlocked warranty void end of story... what's so funny and hard to understand.people who know the risks also know the fix.
