So I have tried many times to restore my phone from a backup made by recovery manager, but it never seems to work. It will always make it to the desktop, but either restart constantly or everything will constantly crash making it unusable. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Is your back up the same base as what toy are on. Meaning 2.1 to 2.1. Are you trying to restore a stock backup over 2.2?

No. The ROM I was running when doing the backup was Serendipity 3.0. I flashed back to Serendipity 3.0, then ran my restore. Everything constantly crashes.
EDIT: I've found uninstalling and reinstalling the applications works, but then there's no point in making a nandroid backup. I might as well just flash back to the ROM I was on and use TiBu in that case.
Anyone else have any ideas?
I'd really like to experiment more with ROMs and custom projects, but I don't want to unless I can basically go back to what I had with one click.
Get titanium backup pro. lts $5, but well worth it. Everything restores with one click.

Yeah, I guess I'll just backup absolutely everything with TiBU Pro and keep the installation files around for each ROM, since CWM backups do not seem to work properly.

CWM backups work fine as long as you have matching firmware versions (2.1-2.1, 2.2-2.2, or 2.2.1-2.2.1)
also you need to be aware of lagfixes in the rom that you may currently be running, they are not always compatible between roms
nandroid does not backup your kernel or modem which is why you need to be moving within the same firmware versions
you cant make a stock nandroid backup, flash a 2.2 rom, then restore from that backup immediately. you will need to do a couple of things first.
keep a stock 2.1 cwm flashable kernel and modem on your sdcard
revert any lagfixes your phone may have prior to trying to restore your nandroid of stock
once lagfixes are removed, flash your kernel and modem (same firmware version as your nandroid backup)(its possible to have this set up within ONE zip file)
once you are rebooted back into CWM, restore your nandroid...reboot and profit

Well like I said, I made a backup on my Serendipity 3.0 ROM I had going, flashed to something else, then even flashed back to Serendipity 3.0 before restoring and it still didn't work properly. All the apps I had installed just force-closed until I reinstalled them, or force-closed somewhere during use.
Hey,
I've looked around and cannot seem to get a straight answer about this. So I'll keep this short
My question being: If I have lost root is it safe/recommended to gain root again by restoring a NANDroid backup (with root) or by flashing a new ROM (with root) as long as I can get into CWM (even without root)?
Thanks in advance!
You say you have lost root. I assume you're on one of the ICS roms?
Without root how you can restore nandroid backup?
CWM won't work without root.
correct

Yes I am on an ICS rom (MidNoteV2.0). It says that I have root, then to go do a NANDroid backup, I have to flash the abyss kernel, reboot into that recovery, make the NANDroid backup, then flash CF-LP1 kernel.
Problem is that when I reboot now, I no longer have root privileges, but I can still reboot into CWM recovery.

And yes I can still get into CWM and restore backups, or flash new .zip s even when it says I have lost root
Is it possible that I may have lost a more superficial part of root, where apps are not allowed to gain super user permissions, but the core functions enabled by root are still available?

What you've got right now is partial root, and that's the plague of all early ICS Roms. You can forget about making useful nandroid backups. Restore brings back partially rooted Roms no good to anyone.
The only way to gain full root again would be to do it all over again, which means
rooted GB Rom
Chinese Repack through Mobile Odin
Desired ICS custom Rom (with wipes where the dev says).
And there is no other way to make sure you're properly rooted.
I've done it 3 times already.

Yea it sucks :/ but I've just been reflashing the original ICS ROM I was using. And haven't encountered too many issues so far.
When you say root GB rom then Chinese repack then install ICS ROM, you mean first flash back a GB rooted rom and kernel, then flash a Chinese kernel, then it's rom?
Initially I actually just rooted my GB stock rom, then immediately jumped to a ICS ROM that included the new kernel. And I didn't end up using Odin once, I somehow mnaged it all through CWM.

Hi , some questions. Will appreciate if anyone could take the time and answer.
1. What things are left out in a nandroid backup? Are kernels included?
2. I can't restore a nandroid backup of froyo on GB without flashing a stock froyo build first, is that right?
3. Can I restore a Nandroid backup of GB 2.3.3 (say) while on GB 2.3.7 or any other 2.3.x? If yes, what if I am on different kernel than the backup kernel, can i still do it?
4. Suppose I am on 2.3.x based custom rom (say MIUI) and I restore a 2.3.x based CyanogenMod Nandroid backup, will I get my whole CM back or all my apps/settings of CM on MIUI?
Thanks a lot.

I'm not sure I can answer all your questions but I'll tell you what I've done.
From stock, after making a nandroid backup using CWM, I've flashed a CM7 having done all the usual wipe(cache, etc) procedures and gone back to stock using the backup. Everything is restored, including my settings, old messages, kernel, apps, everything. Be warned, you will obviously lose all the messages and call records that you received after you flashed the new ROM, unless you use an SMS/call log backup app. Same with CM7 to CM9 and back. So if you plan to flash a new ROM, the nandroid should be able to get you back to the exact same state that you were in when you made the backup.
I'm not much of an expert though, so I might be wrong. Feel free to improve on this answer!
1) Yes
2) Yes. Because of change of Linux kernel version.
3) Yes.
4) You will get whole CM back!

One more question.
As you said, since I can't restore a backup of froyo on GB (because of linux kernel change), how can i restore a 2.3.x with a different kernel on a different 2.3.x with a custom kernel. Or is this kernel different from a linux kernel?
Asking because you answered the b part of 3rd question as yes (or maybe you didn't answer it at all, i am implying here)

Since GB to froyo is not allowed then CM9 (ICS) to CM7 (GB) should also be not allowed? Just want to clarify, have you restored CM7 backup on CM9?

Cm9 for the Ace still uses the old 2.6 linux kernel(same as the gb kernel) because linux kernel 3.x of ICS is difficult to port for our device!
I have restored a CM7 nandroid backup from CM9 and CM10 and it works perfectly!
Any Gb to gb rom restore works.

Cant restore my contacts, sms, apps and data from Gingerbread nandroid backup
Hi,
I have a similar problem.
Thought of posting a new thread but afraid that i would flood the forum.
I have taken NANDROID backup of my Gingerbread Stock ROM(rooted) using CWM.
Currently im in Cyanogenmod 7.2 for galaxy ace S5830.
I thought of restoring my Contacts,Sms,Apps using Advanced restore from Recovery mode.
Result: "MD5 mismatch" hence unsuccessful.
I tried restoring my Entire NANDROID back up.
Result: The Ace was stuck up with Samsung LOGO.
I flashed CM7.2 again after restoring factory settings.Things work but a blank phone.
So im in 7.2 again. How do i restore the GB Rom? I just want to safely export Sms,contacts and data using .APKs and retrieve back in CM7.2 ????
(BTW CM 7.2 gives me 2 days battery backup at 480 Mhz (underclock) with many useful apps customized as ROM. Quite Delighted. Thanks to Mclaw)
Custom and stock roms use different file systems. Custom uses ext4, stock uses rfs. You need to convert file systems before restoring backup.
Ways to do it:
-flashing stock firmware with odin.
-using the cf-root ext4 manager app, which you can extract from cf-root flashable zip.
Good luck
Hey Guys,
I have a rooted LG p990 from FIDO in Canada. I was wondering if i can get back to stock rom in order to get the ics OTA update.
I have NOVA HD REBUILD 1.1.0 (unofficial cyanogenmod 9) on it currently with the 2.6.32.59-HP-CM9-ICS-SUPERSONIC-RC2 Kernel.
I also have a nandroid backup of GB, but dont want to backup because i read online that the kernels are different and something to do
with the file system so you can brick your phone. Can i just restore the nandroid? or go back to stock? and how?
New to flashing, ROMS, Kernels etc. so i need help
You can restore the Nandroid without any problem. Everytime you change the ROM, Kernel will also be changed along with that. So after you restore the nandroid backup, your kernel will also be changed to Stock Kernel along with ROM. There wont be any problems.
Press THANKS if my answer is helpful.
If you are in Canada then I don't see how you will get ICS ota when LG Canada have said they won't release it there.
I doubt any release of ICS will be ota.
You'll possibly need to flash a downloaded rom to ICS anyway. Not sure if just changing regional settings will work but someone else can chime in on that one.

Are you sure, because i read online that ics changes the file system rendering the nandroid backup useless. And finally I don't need to flash a gingerbread kernel before right?, as nandroid restores my stock kernel.
Stock kernel is a gingerbread, one

Yes... The nandroid restore will restore the stock kernel as well. I have tried a few ICS Custom ROMs and restored my Nandroid backup and it restored the stock kernel.
One more question
Will the nandroid backup also restore the stock baseband and RIL?
Help - boot loop
I did the restore and it restored successfully, but when i reboot im in a boot loop and cant get past the white lg logo! HELP
FIXED
Changed to ext3 file system and it works now

Yes. Download a stock image from xda threads and flash it. You might have flash a new kernel if your coming from ics.

I have an Xperia Z C6603 which I purchased last month, updated to Android 4.2.2, and which is still under warranty.
I want to root the device so that I can make Nandroid backups among other things. I am going to use DooMLoRD's Easy Rooting Toolkit and have the necessary files in place ready to use.
After rooting I will have to install CWM Recovery in order to restore any Nandroid backups should I need to. I do not want to install a non-stock ROM at the moment as I'm quite happy with the performance of the stock ROM.
If I need to return the device under warranty I shall need to restore the stock, non-rooted, ROM and I have a stock ROM C6603_10.3.1.A.0.244_Generic UK.ftf to do that if required.
What I don't understand, even after doing lots of searches, is whether restoring the stock ROM will overwrite the CWM Recovery as that would be a bit of a giveaway.
Can anyone explain please?

Flashing stock FTF will first wipe your existing files on your phone (even Superuser / SuperSU / any superuser permission-app will be erased) and then replace everything. This will also erase any trace of custom recovery image that is existing on your Z!
