[Q] Xperia Z Email - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, just wondering can someone with an Xperia Z answer a Q for me, when receiving an email does it get sent to the phone straight away like my iphone does or is it like older android phones and only options to check for email every 5/10/15 mins etc? Thanks

that depends on which type of email account you set up.
gmail supports push-email. that means, the server contacts your phone and you'll receive in almost in realtime. second one is an pop3 / imap account, normally every mail account except gmail works with these protocols. this means your old-fashioned way of checking for new mail in periods. I don't know, what it is about exchange... anybody else?

Exchange
iirc, Exchange accounts can be configured to use push, if the server has it enabled.

thanks for the answers guys, was just wondering because I used BT email powered by yahoo on my iphone and got emails right away, yet on my HTC Wildfire (downgrade, yes I know) its only every 15 mins. so it should work fine when i get a Z. Thanks

i have a btinternet account and only get my mail when the phone checks every 15 mins or whatever i set it to, does not seem to give push email

Check Yahoo email on AT&T tilt.

So I want to check my yahoo email from my AT&T tilt, however according to AT&T there is NO way to do it unless I pay Yahoo $20/year for something. I had it all set up when I first got the Tilt a few days ago and it worked intermitt for a while, but quit last night. After calling tech support they wanted me use xpress mail, but that does not get all the folder info from yahoo.
So, per tech I deleted the accounts, hard reset (I soft reset at the bloatware load) and now I need to install a new email account to check yahoo. After doing so, I get an error that says to check my user name and password...but I know they are correct. I did not get this error before, just got intermit email retrieval.
Is there a chance that when talking to tech they notified yahoo or flipped a switch or something so that there is no way I can do this now.
OR is there a way to check my Yahoo email without using xpress mail...OR by using xpress mail and being able to see all the folders I have in yahoo?
Thanks much...I tried the wiki and the search but did not find any info...although I am sure someone will point me to the solution right away.
outlook on your device should auto detect settings for yahoo, mine works fine and i'm not payin yahoo a cent for access
It does auto detect the pop stuff when I am setting up the email account, however I still get the "check password and user name" error.
i have no problems here...are you sure your putting in the right passworkd username?? lol iot happens to me also
Yahoo used to have a great add on app similar to windows live for hotmail but they put out a new one that blows and didn't allow you to sync your mail with outlook. Thats why I switched to hotmail. Plus i love being able to sync my contacts with my hotmail account.
there's another alternative, one of these threads shows how to direct all mail to a server and just set outlook to that to get everything you need from it
Well...to make me even more mad...I leave the house, go for a drive with the same "bad user name and password" and all of a sudden...BLING...I have mail! So I guess I have the right user name and password. WTF man? I just do not get it...and of course the knuckleheads at AT&T don't get it either. At least I have a non-bloatware phone now...stock ROM though.
Appreciate the help and continued comments.
stock rom shouldnt have to do with it but then again anything is possible these days.i never came across that issue with my old tornado,my 8125,hermes or my kaiser
At this point it still working, but I have little faith that it will continue as such.
Still reloading all my cabs after the reset...forgot I already put that much in this thing...might need to rethink it some. I will flash this sucker sometime soon...still have 20 days to return it if I am not happy.
Thanks again,
Well...that did not last long...it is back at it. Again with the "check your login and password" error. So, could there be a connection issue... ie. do I have to be in 3G to get email? I am on the edge of 3G coverage here.
I just do not get it.
since you get service on and off like that, it may be a different issue. being on 3g or not doesnt affect it, only affect the speed of your transfers.
at this point i dont get it either, maybe it's somethign wrong on Yahoo's end. could be blocking access to their yahoo mail service, making you sign up for their paid service or using thier new app yahoo 2.0 soon to be 3.0
I can't believe someone still uses Yahoo mail when there's Gmail.. It just boggles my mind.
yea i use gmail and comcast mail and have everything forwarded thats important to my gmail.i tend to use yahoo mail only for spam
Gmail has the best hands-down no-argument spam filter.
And charging people for POP3? Are you freaking ****ting me? What is this, 1980? How about charge them $1/email? Fraking ridiculous.
Well, I see you all don't like Yahoo...but that is what I use and I really like it...been using it for years. EVERYONE knows that email address and I I can't risk not having it for now.
But, this morning as I am talking AT&T about this thing...I explain that I have friends that get Yahoo mail...she says "it won't work, there is no way to do it"...then I tell her there is a forum where I posted this question and she says "look sir I do this for a living and I can assure you it will NOT work"...right then I get Yahoo mail on my phone. I tell her, "you might want to think about your line of work a little, or even switch careers and be a coffee jockey somewhere...cuz I JUST GOT YAHOO MAIL ON MY PHONE!!!".
Needless to say she was speechless for like 2 minutes. Then I concluded the call.
For most of today...while not in a 3G area...I got emails. I still don't get it.
I will look into the Gmail thing, however I just can't afford to not have my Yahoo account right now. Years ago I looked at Gmail and it was a joke...this was like 8 years ago or something...so I am sure it is greatly improved.
Thanks again for the help,
I get the same issue listed above, was there ever a fix for this. I've tried everything listed in the thread. I can't drop my Yahoo because I have way to many personal and business contacts linked to this e-mail. I just can't figure out why it is giving me password errors, any advice?

Was using yahoo and hotmail for the longest time too so I understand your reluctance to switch, AFAIK you can set most these web mail services to forward mail to another address and also have a "reply to:" feature this will make it easier for you to migrate to a new address if ever you do decide to do so. I migrated to Gmail a few years back because they had free POP forwarding. Now that I don't have a PC at home I use my device for all my email. Currently I have 5 email accounts on my tytn2.
3 Gmail = 1 for personal , 1 for forums i join, 1 for mobile , 1 Live Hotmail = the occasional straggler emails, and 1 Yahoo = the occasional straggler emails.
Oh and I don't use POP anymore all of the above are IMAP [Gmail also has free IMAP forwarding]
Yahoo does not provide POP3 email forwarding unless you pay $20 a year for "MAIL PLUS"
see this
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/yahoomail/manage/manage-69.html
you can get your email here
http://us.m.yahoo.com/
on your browser
I got yahoo mail though the AT&T application XpressMail, it worked all the time and you can schedule it to check your email at an interval, its free i havent been charged whatsoever unless its because i use it through wifi. the great thing is it integrates with mobile outlook, i would advise installing that at least so your yahoo problems are solved
Yahoo Go
I used this one and it worked out well, Yahoo Go 2.0. I can't find the download link as i'm in a rush out the door. But this manages your yahoo mail rather well and has other nice features. When I get the my study spot I'll try to find the link and post it.

No (real) push email even with Xpress Mail!!

After dealing with buggy versions of Windows Live (I got one version to work reasonably well with push, though it's spotty), I decided to try
Xpress Mail after reading that it has improved.
I set it up on my AT&T Fuze (stock ROM) to use my Gmail account and soft-reset. It's set up to do push by default. I sent myself three test e-mails and, of course, none of them came to my phone immediately. It took anywhere from five to 15 minutes for an e-mail to come through.
After I performed a manual send/receive I sent myself a couple more e-mails and NOTHING! They all came super late.
I know some folks on here are having no problems with their e-mail, but why the hell is it so hard for others to get our push e-mail going?
I've always been under the impression that "push" mail only works with an Exchange Server... and it works well with my business e-mails. I check gmail through IMAP which is an improvement overPOP3, but still needs to poll the server on a schedule.

Push email is a service provided by the email carrier or vendor, exchange works very good with push because I use it on a daily basis. GMail (as far as I know) does not offer Push, what Xpress mail does is poll (via IMAP) to gmail and pushes the emails once Xpress has received it rather then having your phone do the polling.
Are you serieus? Why my w810i/k850i/w960i all used pushmail service from Gmail? So yes it have pushmail for shure, only MS don't like the idea of not using exchange for it and now we all have to suffer for that :S

Ciao
I have windows live set up on ROMeOS and I'm having no problem with push. Sometimes I send CABs to myself so i can get them on my phone and it always happens instantly.

If MS didn't like the idea of not using exchange... they wouldn't allow outlook to get mail from pop3/imap. If that's suffering you need to expand your horizons a bit... Sorry for the rant, just tired of anti-MS (not that I'm a big fan). Credit where credit is due.
I didn't read the RFC, but I don't think IMAP supports "push". There is a new proposal for Push-IMAP (P-IMAP) based on IMAP4... Android OS seems to support "push" Gmail and iPhones have some proprietary hooks to get "push" Gmail. So "push" Gmail is out there...

Emoze - www.emoze.com offers not only G'Mail "pushed" but also access to G'Apps too!!!!!
.
IMAP IDLE can be called Push-Mail.
The email client can stay in contact with the IMAP server, which tells the client that there is new mail.
Unfortunately, Outlook Mobile does NOT support IMAP IDLE.
ImapPusherService adds this functionality, but it's still an early version...
I'm not satisfied with Xpress email either. I've only added my main Gmail on so far for testing, but I have several more I want to monitor. With my Treo 680 I had no problem with email monitoring. During Mon-Fri daytime I monitor all my accts with thunderbird portable and therefore don't want email being picked up by the phone too. I set up the custom time settings in Xpress to not do this and yet, email still came through. Also it often picks up old mail - mail that was sent several days ago that I'd already read via POP on thunderbird, etc. I don't want to deal with this ridiculousness. I don't need instant Push per se, but at least the ability to set an account to check every five minutes. Would I be able to replace Xpress with Emoze, FlexMail, ProfiMail, or other email apps smoothly? As in replace it on my email tab easily?
I've had no issued with xpress mail. I'm actually participating in their beta program and have hotmail, yahoo and my work lotus notes mail pushing. A lot of times I will get mail on my htc touch pro before my Notes client on my laptop pulls in the mail.
The big ting I'm looking for (for my wifes phone) is a solution that can push contacts and calendar from yahoo, hotmail or gmail.
Lastly I wish one of these solutions would some how include a script or something triggering your VPN client. When I'm away from my desktop I need the connector to reconnect to the work mail server but it can't without me manually starting my vpn client.
Maybe I need to learn how to write a script to not own launch my VPN client but also to click on connect...
For everyone that claims Gmail doesn't offer push, if i connect the first time to it via imap on every latest model (later then w810i) it says 'gmail offers pushmail, activate it on this phone?'... it workes really great (on a SE phone) but MS don't like us to use other clients...
It just sucks, and of there was a real solution for this (a real program instead of ms outlook) it wil be used by almost everyone with wm i quess!
I wanted to throw out some names: I use Seven's Beta for my university (Yale) IMAP push. I also use Funambol to synchronize contacts, tasks, notes, calendar with Outlook.
Alternatives for Push Gmail include Emansio, Emoze, IMAP-pusher service, Mobipush.
I've posted on this issue extensively, so just do a search!
Okay so I need to know which is better:
Seven?
eMoze?
Mobipush?
Emansio?
I currently use seven and don't like that it can't set times to push the data (say every hour). It just leaves a time on to push. Like a time period. How is mobipush or emoze?

Be frank forget all above. there is 2 best option you can have.
1) get mail2web.com account: they offering free exchange service.( my opionen best for free only negative point.. the mails that you send hve the extension [email protected]
2) flexmail software:I think best email client but takes some memory. with that you can download you mail (gmail) IMAP and IDLE which is kinda pushmail. it take 1 minute to arrive on you device.

[Q] Stupid, stupid email problem..

I got my Note just a few days ago and I am getting to know it but I'm having a really stupid and annoying email problem.
I have an iPad and a Note and the same gMail account configured on both. When I get an email in the gmail account, the iPad gets it first EVERY time. If I test the email by sending it from my PC, the iPad will get the email in a few seconds. The Note always takes longer. Sometimes 10 seconds, sometimes 20 minutes and occasionally, never at all!!
I've tried both the gMail app (which I hate) and the stock Samsung app (gmail setup as exchange) individually and both together and sometimes one will get email first and the other will get it 10 mins later!
I've also configured my wife's iPhone 4s to get the same emails and that too gets the emails exactly the same time as the iPad.
What on earth's going on?
I had a Galaxy S before the Note and that would get email at exactly the same time as the iPad, every single time.
Auto sync is on, email is on push for both email apps. Both devices are using the same gmail account.
Can anyone please help, I've completely factory reset my Note twice and the problem's still here.

Try this:
Set it up as an Exchange account like this:
enter user name and password
do manual set up
select Exchange
leave domain blank and /your user name as is
leave password as is
change server to m.google.com: 443
select push
Syncs just like any other Exchange account. Should receive everything at the same time.
Thanks. I tried this and it didn't seem to make any difference but I tried something else that seems to have done the trick.
I was previously syncing email, contacts and cals via the gmail account and not using the exchange account. I unchecked ALL the sync items on the 'normal' gmail account ie no contacts, no mail and no cals but checked contacts on the exchange account. Just to recap:
gmail account --> no sync for any items
exchange account ---> sync mail, contacts etc
selecting anything else to sync using exchange seems to have done the trick. It now seems to sync and for the moment, it's getting the email within a few seconds of the iOS devices. Few seconds later later though
Now onwards to tackle the sucky battery life...

[Q] Gmail Exchange Setup

Hey all,
just upgraded from a Note2 to the Xperia Z.
I've been trying to setup my Exchange email for over an hour without success,
I've got it setup on the note2 working fine and notifying when mails are coming in. So settings seem right, but it won't budge on the Xperia Z, I know google talked about ending support for Exchange, but surely if it's working on my current phone, why not work on my new phone?
Settings being used.

Any and all help welcome, thanks
Luke.
Same here. I have switched to android 2 weeks ago from iphone. On iphone i was getting e-mail notifications from google instantly when message was received on google server for few last years. Now it is not so good. I have checked now set up instructions for google sync and it says that it is for Google apps for business, education and government users. It was free for all before. It is free for all old users though but it seems that when you switch phones while using same gmail account, it does not transfer. Notifications on my ipad are still instant.

One reason especially on my old Samsung was that it displayed emails in a better format, as gmail used to have a stupid limit to the zoom meaning i had to scroll left to right on emails and it was bloody annoying. Also i find Exchange is near instant on arrival, while gmail is anywhere from instant to 5 minutes late.
If this is the scheme of new phones no longer working on exchange i'm pretty pissed off with google.

[Q] IMAP Push email on Mail app ?

Is there is no support for PUSH email through IMAP on the stock mail app ? I've been using K9 and while K9 works great, the UI on the mail app looks more pleasing and easier to navigate than K9. I'd like to migrate my work email to it, but only if I can get push.
I'm leaning towards its not possible through IMAP because I couldn't find anything while in the settings, but it's worth a shot to ask.
Anyone know ?

The stock HTC mail app has always supported this, so I'd be very surprised if anything has changed. Sounds like you already have the IMAP setup within your e-mail account, so you just add a new account and choose "Other (POP3/IMAP)" from the options and enter your particulars. Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync is also supported.

Doesnt work. On K9 it works flawlessly. With the mail app it doesnt.
The ONLY thing it could be, is my understanding of what SmarySync does. I've tried varies combinations of peak and off peak. But there is no push option. Its either smart sync, or some interval (every 5mins, 30mins, 1h etc..). With smart sync enabledd, it takes minimum 5 mins before I get a notification that I have an email. lol...thats the most laziest 'push' ive ever seen if that is what htc is calling push email. lol
Anyone get a non Google and non Microsoft Exchange email account added with working push ?
bump
I'm not entirely sure if this has changed but it used to be that POP and IMAP were client-based protocols meaning that the client initiates the act of message retrieval and the server sends messages as they're requested. Push requires a server initiated connection or at least would have to have a way to ping the client to make sure it's still available. Hopefully someone who knows more will chime in to confirm this or correct me where I'm wrong...

Far as I know, push doesn't work with the stock mail app. Smartsync just extends the sync interval when you don't use the mail app for a while.
