Have just tried to run repair my phone through the sony pc companion. it detected my phone ok and downloaded the firmware. When it tried to install the firmware it failed saying my phone was running modified software and couldn't update. Is this because I unlocked my bootloader?
If it is, is their a way around the problem?

Once you unlock BL, Sony will stop bushing update to you and support.

It is lame that you can't even get an update through PC companion to return to stock. I can understand not doing ota. I don't care about warranty on Sony stuff, their warranty process sucks

I would dissagree. My XZ died (soft brick) and there was not any other way than service. Warranty covered it. They saw intact BL, they told me. If it wasn't, well...

When is it coming ? Jan the 31st ....So today ?ok Not today but weeks later http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/01/3...oming-firmware-version-9-1-a-0-489-certified/ better late then never though I wouldn't expect never for such a new phone that would be just ridiculous
Just out of interest, when an FTF file becomes available, could you then flash it with flashtool on a stock ICS locked bootloader?
Judging by past firmware updates, it's taken 2/3 months for Orange to push an update.
Yes, or you could flash the 303 generic UK and ota to current. You'll then get jelly when Sony says not ee.

I wonder how I flashed my V with its locked bootloader to Xperia VL's firmware using Flashtool, then.
All you need is matching signatures, and all similar models share them.
Yes good news

Sorry but you've got that wrong, you can use flashtool to flash an official ftf onto a phone with a locked bootloader, I've done it loads of times with my xperia's. In essence if your locked to a network orange, t-mobile ect then you can get the region generic ftf and flash it with flashtool to debrand your phone
What you can't do is flash custom ROMs which require a custom kernel.

Thanks for the responses guys, I thought it would be possible, the only reason I ask is that I've flashed ICS firmwares to the T in the past, but wasn't sure with it being a different version of the OS.

Please read before continuing to facepalm yourself.
Flashtool does not require your bootloader to be unlocked. It also does not even you require your phone ot be rooted.
Flashtool can be used on any xperia phone regardless. It does not require fastboot

So this is 4.1? I got the update in sony bridge, but updating means I lose my root right? (locked bootloader)
Yes when you update to different firmware you will lost the root privilege

Not always, there are ways around it. But in general yes.
Once the new firmware hits users with locked bootloaders we will see if we lose root, but then we will also find a way to root the newfirmware or find a way to update that does not lose root.
Hi all I recently tried updating the FW on my xz but when it restarted, it said that it failed to install. I tried to install it twice but failed both times.
The bootloader has not been unlocked. And the phone has been rooted.
Can I update using the pc companion?
Thanks for your help

Sorry, I'm new to all this android flashing since this is my first Android device (came from ios)
If I download a 434 FTF and flash it, will I lose all my apps and app data?
And can I flash in recovery, or can FTF files only be flashed using flashtool?

You can't flash FTF files through recovery. Using the flash tool you can keep data and settings or you can wipe them if you wish.

Update .434
Hi
I have seen this update on the SOny website but my phone (C6603) will not recognise the update, I have tried PC companion and the web route and no luck. Can anyone advise or help to establish why I have not received the update OTA also?

Probably region specific. I saw a post about it last week regarding 434 being pushed to some devices. But I only got it today. Maybe just wait a few more days!

I read that SUS refused to repair because stock apps were removed. So you should deactivate them instead of removing.

no, i think as long as it recognises official firmware (regardless of apps), it will reflash.

i think you need to unlock the bootloader to install custom roms, so technically if you keep the bootloader locked you'll always be able to repair.
Flashing a phone with a locked bootloader should always work as long as there are no extensive build.prop changes made.
I'm on Three UK and still haven't got the new OTA of 101.A.1.434. It's a C6603 and it's rooted with a locked bootloader. I don't know if it's just my carrier being slow or what cause everyone I know who has the Z is on a different carrier... Any ideas? Even the sony pc companion says im up to date when im still on 101.A.1.350. Thanks in advance.
I'm also on three UK
Its just them being slow.
Press thanks if I help helped

Just debrand the phone. You won't need to unlock it.

Hi, today ihave unlocked and rooted my friend's xperia z, and i got software update in PCC, can i update it or should i go by installing it via flashtool?
thanks
You can't update or restore the Z via PPC or SUS.
So you'll have to use Flashtool or EMMA Flashtool.
But why go through the hassle of unlocking the bootloader if you will keep stock firm?
