[Q] Camera on AOSP - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On the Evo LTE (and I'm pretty sure on many other phones as well), the camera wasn't as good on AOSP ROMs as it was on Sense ROMs due to the ImageSense chip thing only working with the Sense framework and stuff. Will that be the case when AOSP ROMs start to become developed on this phone.?

If its happened with all previous phones why even ask?
It's a pretty safe bet to say yes

You never know. Things might be different on this phone. Is there something wrong for hoping for change.? But yeah. It'll probably be the same. :\

I'm fairly sure you need some Sense APIs to use the camera at its full potential. Was the same with last year's One series devices as well.

Just upgraded both me and my wife's phones from captivates to vivids. Had it about a week, so far i love the phones. I look forward to meeting everyone and learning about mods and stuff available for this phone. I had my captivate maybe a month if that before i rooted and put my first custom rom on. Not sure if I'm going to do anything like that to this phone yet, on stock ics and i like it the way it is for the most part.

If you love stock and just want a cleaned detoxed Rom you should check out wildchild's Rom his roms are on his site so check his signature if you want a link to his site. The vivid is a great device.

Yeah sense is all and all pretty nice, definitely an enhancement over vanilla gingerbread, not sure about ICS though as it looks beautiful already in its vanilla form. But i probably do like the sense launcher better than stock ics since you can remove unused home screens and don't have a gigantic search bar taking up a quarter of the screen. Just wish it had a more ICS ish app drawer with widgets inside and all. Also wish the gvoice integration with your call history worked. Otherwise i like it.

welcome to the vivid...have fun and remember to read read read before you start to mod your phone..the vivid is a lil diff when it comes to flashing roms and stuff so please read read and read some more
Yeah Samsungs seem naturally more tailored for custom roms. I always read a ton when I haven't done something before, and since I'm on a new phone by a different manufacturer, I'll have to learn everything over again

Yeah I think of myself as a pro by now ;-) I've flashed my easily probably a 100 times, had everything from custom froyo roms to cm7. 1, to vanilla ics! But I'm happy with my vivid for now, in fact it's pretty close to 100% satisfaction. Never had that with my cappy, I was annoyed with the lag and gps within the first week.. Speaking of lag does this phone even have it? Not saying that's a bad thing

Thought HTC said Sense 4.0 couldnt be on Incredible S?

So I was on HTC's website today just looking, then I saw they had another phone coming out. Desire C. Looked at the specs here http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_desire_c-4759.php HTC didnt have it on their website yet. When we get our update rolled out it is only coming with Sense 3.6 because they said our specs were too low. But when you look at the Desire C specs they are worse than the Incredible s and its getting sense 4.0.
Desire C specs
600mhz processor
512mb RAM
Incredible S
1GHZ processor
768mb RAM
Why is HTC holding out on us!!!!!
Im running NIKHIL007's Project X and its awesome!! cant understand why HTC wouldnt be able to have sense 4.0 included.
Are their developers not as good as the guys here on XDA?
Giving us the latest version of sense would kind of defeat the purpose of buying a new phone
They would be shooting themselves in the foot so to speak

True enough. But I dont go and buy a phone based on if it has the latest software. I would buy a new phone based if it has better specs. They should be keeping their current users happy no?
This phone's old now. They want people to ditch it and go pick up the latest HTC phones. Hence why they brought the one series out.

2 words; Project X. It's a brilliant rom with sense 4.
As said, the manufacturers aren't going to update forever as people wouldn't buy new phones!

Sorry, but... what's it with sense4 that makes it so special? (I know it is ICS, but except for that)

For me its the whole user interface. I have been one to love sense since it came out. Loved it when I had a windows phone and still love it with android. Ive tried other UIs but still like sense way more. i like the look of sense 4.0 just some minor differences and big differences between 3 and 4.
But yes I cant wait till NIK releases Project X Transformer. Since he started making ROMs Ive been with his work since, only reason I am staying with my Incredible S

12hours with 3G, data and wifi on all the time and I've got 57% left.

Why is ROM development so slow for HTC phones?

I'm trying to decide between the sprint galaxy s 4, and the HTC one. My concern with the HTC is ROM development, my original galaxy s gets fully working cyanogenmod before a useful rom is made for my evo 3D. This seems to be the case with most all of their devices.
Why is it this way? Will the HTC one be this way as well? I'd like to hear people's thoughts on this. Thanks.

lol! Cyanogenmod ROM comes first before stock ROM? Ain't believing it buddy
useful ROM = Stock ROM
Nono, the evo 3d has unofficial cyanogenmod at least 3 months after the epic 4g receives official. Two, unofficial AOSP roms seem to be more stable (and released earlier) on galaxy s devices than htc devices why is that? Both being flagships, what leaves htc behind in custom AOSP roms?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
My galaxy s would be on. 2.3, it is now on 4.2. The evo would be on 4.0 with outdated sense, it is now on 4.1. Nexus 7, stock 4.2. I use stock until the phone ages, and stock isn't good enough. I plan to have my next phone for 2 years, I might as well choose a phone that will stay current throughout those two years.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
HTC supports the flagship in every way possible, look at the One X. Even the newly released One is getting OTA at a crazy rate. And for custom rom developers, my Desire HD has fully stable 4.2.2 CM, AOKP and even paranoid. I hope this was helpful

I'm beginning to think that the evo 3d was just a horrible buy. I hope that the fact they're releasing the exact same device across all networks helps development. Still can't decide between the S4 and this. Both very good phones.

I've never owned a Samsung, but I've owned 2 HTCs, and my device is great in durability. I have this phone for about 2.5 years and I drop it around once every 3 days (obviously not intentionally) and it still runs good, no issues. For Samsung, you should read Samsung forums.

Ohh ok I got it now. Unfortunately there's won't be any CM or AOSP ROMs until kernel source code is out. Thing is Stock kernel is not compatible with AOSP/CM ROMs and the other way around since both custom and stock has some functions added to the kernel for it to work.
And the thing here is samsung releases kernel source code earlier than HTC. So it really depends on the situation. And by the way samsung is not releasing opening up it's exynos to developers. And now that samsung implemented octa core & big little architecture on their new processors. I doubt they would be able to make a CM/AOSP ROM anytime soon on S4.
I know cm10.1 runs slow as heck on my wife's one x as a custom sense rom works smooth as butter. On my note 2 cm10.1 actually runs better than any touchwiz rom. My advice is to wait until there both out and go see them in person. Both phones will get a good bit of development.
Thank you so much. That's exactly what I was looking for. Do you think the unlocking/s off process going to be simple to get it to run AOSP? I had to do the horrifying "wire trick" to get AOSP on the evo 3d.

You don't need s-off to run aosp. You just need to unlock on htc dev or buy the dev edition one that htc will offer. But yes I'm sure in time we will get s-off for everyone. Lol.. I remember the wire trick, I used to own a rezound, horrid phone. No I just did s-off on my wife's new one x and its just a command line hack and software.

Doubt that, it's not unusual for phones to ship a version behind. But with the s4 shipping with the latest I'd hope htc will push an update ASAP.

[Q] how deeply integrated is the camera software?

I haven't been able to play around with the dumps and international ROMs floating around yet. To those who have already played around with development: how difficult will it be to port the camera software to other devices? I'm getting the HTC One next week but my wife is really interested in the camera features.

I think this depends on the device you're porting to. For example, I currently have the HTC EVO 4G LTE and I'm running a Sense 5 ROM and the camera is the same camera. I think so long as you have a phone that can run Sense 5.0 you should be fine
So its more baked to sense as opposed to being built around hardware, I'm assuming?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Both. It won't be the same experience as using the One but it will do a good job at mimicking it, depending on your phone.

Returning to get S4?

Ive been thinking about returning my one to get a s4 from sprint. My main reason is that I dont find any info that the one will ever get a 100% working aosp rom as im not a huge fan of sense or touchwiz and the s4 is already getting cm nightlies for some variants and shouldn't be long till all versions do. Also what phone do you think will get more dev support?

Pretty sure that if you been "modding" devices alike for awhile you would know more about HTC devices and there source code and binaries arn't just a overnight process to port (not to say samsung are easier at times).
AOSP is very close to being done via the msm8960 group that is porting all the code daily. Daniel on the team posted this on his Google+ today Cm10.1 HTC ONE. By next week we will almost have a working AOSP build / kernel for this device, outside polishing its gonna be awesome and worth the wait. If you insist on a s4 go for it! its your money, your decision!
