[Q] Vibrant GT-I9000 Possibly Bricked? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a possible soft bricked Samsung Galaxy S GT-19000m which I got from a friend earlier in the week. I've done a good amount of reading and haven't gotten far, at all. (Mostly all the stickies and so forth have been read and tried)
Currently, it's dead. It does not want to charge through the usb or turn on through with a USB conencted to it. Before it died, I was able to access Upload Mode and Recovery mode but not the download mode.
The firmware has been set to a SGH-T959 (which is a Vibrant model under T-Mobile; This phone was originally with Bell before my friend flashed it.)model when I checked the about on the phone when I was able to access the main interface.
Another note: The sim card and memory card were not detected before the phone died.
Model : GT-I9000M
Manufacture Date - 10.10
Firmware is 2.2 (I think)
Any ideas?

Well, it's not a vibrant. It's a I9000M. Also, there's no such thing as a upload mode. That's probably the download mode. You need to find a I9000M and flash it via odin. What do you mean by dead though? If you cannot access download mode and it won't charge, I am afraid that there's very little you can do about it. Even with a usb jig you still need a battery with juice left.

Well, you are correct. It is a Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000M but the fool who gave me the phone had downgraded it to and changed all the internal files so it's now a SGH-T959 Vibrant (Which is 2.2 gingerbread I believe) on GT-I9000M hardware. The upload mode is what is available to that specific model of phone and looks like this. 1260.photobucket . com . albums/ii579/Tmanschuette/e799aab9.jpg Not of any actual use (except to dump)
The battery is dead and there is currently no way to currently charge as it does not charge through USB. When the battery still had a bit of juice left, the device worked but had clear issues. And whenever the device was powered on and a usb was plugged in, it would shut down. The software is not compatible with the hardware so it will not charge. That would be my biggest issue.
Would getting a jig and kicking it into download mode through that work at all?
Thanks for taking the time to reply. This is all very frustrating.

Well holy ****. What on earth is that? I apologise for saying there's no upload mode, it's just that it's a very rare condition... Man, that's a quite a mess you have on your hand.
Found someone who claimed ot have solved it using USB jig
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858233
If you can get it into download mode, flashing a I9000M rom should do the trick. The jigs are very cheap anyway. I am just worried whether odin will even recognise your phone.

If your phone can't get into download mode due to it being disabled it looks like your pretty much screwed. You could phone samsung and see if they'd fix it.

If you can get to the AT&T logo part, I'm assuming you should still be able to get to download mode. Did your phone have dl mode before?
Thread moved to Q&A section
Yes my phone could get into dl mode b4 but now it doesn't work any more, phone just keeps on showing at&t logo and rebooting.
When I put the USB lead in the phone does not switch on at all..
thanks 2 all for assistance in this horrible mess negligence has left me in.
the USA models goes into download mode by using the volume up + volume down + power
see if that works
Thanks for your reply...
no joy... any other viable button combinations I could try? I've already tried many to no avail...
I'm no expert on the matter but don't you think that since you flashed a Captivate ROM on an I9000 that the home button wouldn't work since the Captivate doesn't share the same home button? Logically I would try looking for what the combo is for the Captivate to get into download or recovery mode. Now, I may be wrong and it may not work if the captivate uses its home button to enter the home button but it's worth a shot.
Edit: I just checked here and it says you hold both the volume up and volume down button while you press the power button. Try that.
With the device off, try holding both vol + & - then plugging in usb cable. Thats how a captivate enters download mode. If flashing the i9000 on captivate changes the button sequence it could not hurt to try.

@ Bell & foom....
I understand both your thought pattern and YES this was mine also...
However thus far no combinations have worked, still continually looping the at&t logo.
If I plug in the charger or USB whilst its doing this it kills the device, it wont switch on...
Knowing the different CAPTIVATE button comb. to recovery or download mode would be a big help right now.. also how the buttons would be mapped... i.e Captivate rom. on GALAXY S device?
How would one fix a captivate that was continually re-booting at operator logo start-up? Might be another way to angle this?
Thanks....
Think u are better off paying the guys at samsung or phone repair store to load the right firmware back in if u dont have the 3 btn combo...

try downloading that one click unroot program, plug the sgs into the computer and then force unroot, although the unroot won't work it should then allow the sgs to enter recovery mode.
Unfortunately my PC is not recognising the phone...
Plugging the USB in while the phone is switched OFF does nothing....
lugging the USB in while the phone is switched ON.. Turns it off...
Same things happen when the Charger is plugged in.. Althou the phone seems to still charge!!!
Arghhh..
Thanks for your suggestion thou.. Any more help/ ideas are welcomed...
Last resort maybe try heating up the phone like the others did to force download mode?

so any news on this? i too have successfully flashed the captivate rom on my unbranded i9000 the official repair shop i first took it to (mttc <Lithuania>) told me that it needs a new motherboard, and it would cost me 700LTL(270 $us)... kinda sounded like bull****, so a week ago i took it to a private repair shop, they said they had jtag, so i should be hearing from them this week, if not, i'll buy the stupid riff box myself and repair it..
no button combination worked for me, and the symptoms were exactly the same, flashing att, usb kills it etc. etc.
well, my advice would be to keep contacting different local repair shops, and asking do they have a jtag that supports the samsung galaxy s, if they do, the repair shouldn't cost more than 25$, at least thats what I've been told. good luck, and stay in touch, update on your process, cause the number of people flashing the wrong rom on the i9000 is horrifying.
it kinda sux that its so easy to brick the sgs... and its wrong for people to state that "if you have 3button combo enabled, you are safe", well thats just bull****.
No GOOD news as of yet, but I am in the process of to admitting my SGS to a official samsung service centre.. I was also thinking of sending it directly to them for repair...
???
Still been trying some other things to try and jump-start this blasted thing in the meantime but NOTHING IS WORKING!!!!
I to am thinking about purchasing this riff box or JTAG but it would be for a ONE TIME USE only... Seems like a waste of money when I can just claim a new SGS through insurance only thing is playing the WAITING GAME!!!
I Shall definitely update this thread with any progress made in the coming days...
Here I was thinking I was a lone soldier with this dilemma...
Also I agree... SGS = Too easily bricked.. and no solution?? Other than splashing out 100+ £/$... in your words truly SUXXXXXXX!!!!

Sorry, but ANY phone (or even any electronic component for that matter) is easily bricked if you flash firmware from a completely different device onto it.

well, afaik, its very hard to fully brick a new htc device.
anyway, i suggest you try finding a jtag repair shop first, as samsung will take a lot of time to "repair" it, or even tell you that it needs a new motherboard..

[Q] USB No longer Working.......?

My Samsung Captivate was working fine a day ago when I was transferring video off of it to my PC. Now this comes up and I'm like WTH lol. I've never dropped my captivate or damaged it( to my knowledge).
I have read in other posts that the only way to fix this is to replace the mini usb port inside of the phone... If that is true could someone direct me to a site that sells it?
Or is It a battery issue? because It now has a problem with showing the charging battery symbol when its not charging now...
I also thought about going to At&T and letting them tell me what they think, only thing i'm afraid of is that without me being able to flash back to Official 2.1 Eclair they wont help me...
Any suggestions guys?
Bump T_T............
lol, make it totally bricked, att will not see if the phone cannot turn on.
Have you tried switching computers? My laptop stopped reading my phone, but my desktop picked it up just fine.
Try factory reseting and flashing to a new rom
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Well I would Flash it to stock, but how would I do that without the use of USB, because no computer can detect my phone as it is now.... the USB Port is damaged I believe.
As for Bricking it how can I do that because they told me I could replace it because I'm under warrenty, but they also told me that if its found out of warrenty that they may charge me upwards to 480 bucks for the replacement. The guy on the phone told me it only applied to cosmetic and liquid damage though, he didnt mention stuff like flashing the OS or modding.
This is strictly a Hardware Issue as it was working 2 days ago.
lol, you can easily brick your phone by doing the following:
1. download a rom;
2. go to recovery mode;
3. start flashing the rom and remove the battery during the process;
never help people like this ... i feel guilty ...
lol ikr? Never thought I'd ever ask that xD.
Can you plug your phone in to the wall charger and it charge. When you plug.it into.the PC are you getting a message about USB device not recognized. Are you using a.deshktop or a laptop what OS. If you are using a desktop are you using a port on the back preferrably the one closest to the motherboard. These are all things to take into account.
If when you plug it into the wall.or computer your phone will charge then most likely there is nothing wrong with your micro-usb on the phone. Instead its the computer. I had the same issue and had to fight with it for days but now it works everytime I plug [email protected]

like i said in the OP it was working 2 days ago perfectly and I did nothing to change it or damaged it in any way ( to my knowledge) maybe the usb port got messed up when i tried to charge it but I can still get a charge but the battery keeps showing its charging even when it is off of the charger.

only way to really know is by flashing another rom... use your mobile browser not xda app, and go to xda, find a rom thread, and use the mobile browser to download the rom over 3g... reboot into recovery to install it, it will be in the download directory on your internal SD...
Well I would do that but Now I have another problem... it turned off and now it wont turn back on!!!! UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH!!

And Soon as my PC detected it I hurried and Downloaded Odin for Stock 2.1 and Put my Captivate in download mode using Cognition's Download mode option in the hold button popup on screen.
Long story short I was finally able to get my captivate back to 2.1 and the reported problem still exists... I'm calling ATT right now for my replacement that should be here in 2 days ^_^
Thanks Again to all the people here at xda for your help, I deeply appreciate it!

[Q] Dramas - Galaxy running Vibrant Stock ROM - HELP!!!

Major dramas here, I've been having major issues with getting my Galaxy back up, and finally I got Odin 1.7 to put in a ROM and get it running. Thing is, it's now fired up and running Vibrant stock firmware, and I can't find a way to:
1) get a i9000 ROM going on it, and
2) how to get the SD card partitioned.
Any help will be appreciated...
first of all make sure you have the 3 button combo to get download mode
if not try adb command to reboot download
if you have that working get your firmware from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846913 and flash it thru odin
if that doesnt work search again for a firmware with 3 files and PIT, then click RE PARTITION in odin and try again... that should sort you out
Muchas gracias for that, I will post results...
Yeh, bigger fish have spawned, now the phone just shuts down the moment I plug anything into the USB port. Can't use three button trick either...

take battery out for a good 10mins... do the 3 button combo whilst putting the battery back in (hard with only one pair of hands) that has fixed issues in the past, if you can keep download mode on with usb connected flash away.
Cheers, azzledazzle, I will give it a whirl when I next get a spare minute...
Still no go, it just dies when I plug in the micro USB, still can't do the three button trick, and it keeps getting hot when it's running...
check the micro usb for any signs of damage like a bent pin or something. or maybe even some dirt..
if you cant get it working it will have to go to samsung service centre, but if it was running a custom rom before it broke they may charge you or even refuse to fix it :S
Yeh, I guess I'm going to have to return it to place of purchase, but the phone's saying that it's not rooted, so I'm going to focus more on it overheating and that it shuts down after connecting any Micro USB lead to it. I'm also going to tell the retailer that in my opinion the Kies software has gone nuts somewhere along the line and loaded in the Vibrant ROM due to a software error. Or, I could just claim it under insurance...

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S 100% unresponsive after Odin flash..

Oh dear...
I was experiencing the PHONE-->Triangle-->PC logo problem after a flash with odin went 'wrong' with my galaxy S phone.
I followed the guide here to solve it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=981343
And as a result flashed my phone with the stock firmware from this file:
T959UVKA6_REV05_home_low_CL860813.tar
ODIN successfuly reported a green 'Success' Screen, so i disconnected the phone and tried to power it on. But the device is completely 100% unresponsive.
Nothing happens when i plug it into the PC, nor when i charge it from the mains.
I've searched and tried loads of suggestions from this and other forums, solutions including:
1. Removing battery, holding both VOL keys down, plugging into PC.
2. Holding normal HOME, VOL+, Power key. and HOME, VOL-, Power Key...
The problem is, i cannot get the galaxy s to respond to ANYTHING. So there is no way i can get into the download screen to re-flash.
Can anyone lend any advice to me about this issue? Is the phone totally dead now?
I read things about a JTAG? or somesuch cable, but these cables appear to only work as long you can get the "downloading" screen to work.
I don;t want to throw my phone away. Can anyone help?
Thanks

The first flash went 'wrong' becuase ODIN kept getting stuck at the setupconnection stage.
I learnt that removal of the SDCard and SIMCard was the route to fix this, but having fixed it, i flashed it with the stock ROM as detailed in the first post.
Thanks
Hi.
Firstly. If the phone will not response if you put the charger on it the bootloader seems to be dead.
Maybe a possibility would be to use a "USB jig"
Thats not the JTAG!!
JTAG is a develover device for flashing and only the samsung support will have such jtags.
JIG (for USB) is a resistor soldered to the usb connector.
You can buy that usb jig in amazon, ebay or do it yourself.
May you can switch the phone into download mode with it. But no guarantee..

Hm why did you flash Vibrant firmware? If you don't have vibrant of course it doesn't work..and if it contained bootloaders your phone is probably hard bricked (assuming vibrant had different bootloaders from i9000). But if you only flashed ROM then you have good chances of recovering it with jig..let's hope it works
Sent from my CM'd SGS
Does a "hard brick" mean it is proper dead?
I could have sworn i got that last firmware file from a samsung galaxy s forum?!
When flashing with proper firmware ("Cyanogen") will the flash re-write/fix the bootloaders? Or to put it another way... what options do i need to select in Odin?
Thanks
Jig Doesn't Work
Hi... sorry to self bump like this.
I bought a JIG off ebay, plugged it into the phone and sadly the phone did nothing.
Does that mean that the phone is ultra-dead, and there is NO HOPE?
I don;t want to throw it away mommy!
Could the battery be flat?
***Edit - I used the jig on a friends Galaxy S and the phone went into download mode ok. But it does not on mine.
If windows doesn't even recognise the device in any capacity at all... doesn't that mean Game Over? Surely any solution now would still require windows to see the device?

If you have a i9000, that's not a vibrant, and I think that rom you flashed probably contains bootloaders (since it's meant for recovery). Did you select phone bootloader update in odin?
You could try borrowing a battery/charging the one you have, it might be flat, hence why you can't turn on the phone at all. (Maybe vibrant bootloaders have some similarities). Also try check if vibrant has alternate ways of getting to download mode
Lastly, try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330491
Thank you
I have tried using the JIG on a battery that is full, and i still get zero response from my phone.
The link you gave me looks at first glance to be quite complex, but seeing as it is dealing with hardware, it looks like it might work.
Cheers
J
If you open the firmware file with 7Zip, you'll be able to check if it contains bootloaders. Look for bootloader.bin and sbl.bin, if I recall correctly.
Also, what was the battery at when you were flashing? I remember accidentally flashing a Vibrant ffirmware when I first got my i9000m (due to the box saying "Samsung Vibrant", duh) and I distinctly remember my phone losing the ability to charge the battery. If your battery died, there's a good chance that nothing is happening because of this, even when you plug your phone in.
Your best bet sounds like getting a USB jig, I'd say. But check to see if the file you flashed contained bootloaders. If it didn't, it's probably something similar we've overlooked. If it does contain bootloaders, you may have bricked your device.
Use UnBrickable Mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330491
This allows total resurrection regardless if you've damaged your bootloaders or not. You just need to mod your device once and then you can upload Download Mode from then on!
If you'd like, I can perform the mod. I ask for $30 + shipping (usually $6 unless you're overseas). Send me a PM if you need me to do it.
There is no better option than UnBrickable Mod. If you have JTAG performed, then you've got a working device one time. If you do UnBrickable Mod, you can ALWAYS upload Download Mode by removing the battery, plugging it into the computer and pressing the "Download Mode" button on the resurrector I created.
SBL.BIN file located.
Oh deary deary me... the firmware DOES contain an SBL.BIN file :-(
Sadly, i tried all softbrick button pushing solutions on a friends FULL battery. But this had no effect either. And i have already bought a USB jig, that does nothing on my bricked phone, but DOES work on another GalaxyS. This might be the battery though.
Having never soldered anything in my life, i am reticent to start on the hardware hacking side of things if there is another option. But the longer this goes on, the less and less likely it sounds like another option is available.
For Sparta?

"Bricked" Captivate???

I have a Samsung Captivate i897 for AT&T
Firmware version: 2.2 Froyo
Ok, so I had tried to foolishly upgrade my phone through Kies to 2.3 Gingerbread, knowing that I was
upgrading to the SIII in a few weeks anyway. Kies came back with a response that the upgrade
could not be finished, so I proceeded to follow the instructions and do an emergency recovery
of the phone, but after a while, that also failed.
After the recovery failure, I ended up with the "phone ! computer" screen (fromw what I've found, a
disconnect of the phone and computer). It took me several tries, but I found a forum somewhere
that showed me Odin (something I had never really played with for fear of bricking my firmware).
I followed the steps outlined in an xda forum by opening Odin and trying to flash the phone
back to stock.
But alas, my phone's screen turned red...which from some forums seems to be a problem with the
Odin installation. I had looked around a bit more on how to fix this issue, and eventually
arrived again at the Downloading... screen. This was promising at the very least,
but trying to connect to my computer started to fail. I would continually get "USB device
not recognizable" by Windows. I've tried multiple USB ports, reinstalling the phone drivers,
but could not get Kies or Odin to recognize it.
Now...the worst part. Someone somehwere suggested to restart the Download mode, which I did,
and now...the phone won't even return to the Downloading... or phone/computer screen. It's just blank.
Some have suggested that the USB cable or USB ports (more likely the computer) may be at fault
here as well. So I have ordered a cheap USB cable off of Amazon to maybe solve this issue.
The phone does not boot up to any screen, nor does it seem to charge (either in wall or
computer).
So my question is..., does anyone believe I have achieved an unsurmountable task in "bricking"
my Captivate, or is there hope yet that I can revive it from the dead. I plan on selling it online
for around $85 so that I can lower the price for the SIII, but a bricked phone won't get
too much.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to anyone who can enlighten me a bit here.

What did you do before losing download mode/phone-!-computer? Did you flash boot loaders?

If you are interested in trying to save your phone instead of scrapping it for the S3 you might look into either making a jig or ordering one. There is a thread somewhere on here that shows you step by step how to make one and it will force the phone into download mode if it's not completely bricked.
I have made one myself and it worked flawlessly and provided you have an extra micro usb sync cable that you are willing to destroy in the process it will cost you less than $5 to make.
been there..and i fixed mine
can you still do the up+down volume and plug usb to download mode?

Dont know if this method works but its still an option for you to try, might as well.
Install Odin3 One-Click Downloader [I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe] mediafire /?0w2y31maz8mdom4 (I cant seem to post link because Im a new member)
Its basically a hard format.
-Unplug your Phone from USB
-Launch the application
-Take out your battery for about 30 seconds and place it back
-Press and hold Volume Up & Down buttons
-As you're holding the 2 buttons, plugin the USB
-If the application recognizes your phone, just click [START] button and it will wipe everything on your phone (And I MEAN EVERYTHING, so its a sacrifice of losing whatever you had on to fix your phone), and have your phone in factory mode.
I fixed my phone when it was bricked this way. I reinstalled all the mods and updaters.
Hope it works for you!
