Dust inside my Xperia Z. How to clean it? - Xperia Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Even though the Z is water and dust proof, keeping it in my pocket seems to get a lot of dust trapped in it's seams between the glass and side panels.
Even the speaker seems to have dust particles trapped inside it.
Is there a safe way to clean my phone out?
Should I just wash it in water to clean it out?
Anybody else have this problem?
Thanks

Me too...that dust really annoying me!
Sent from something from somewhere...

Water does the trick. You could have tried that yourself before posting though. It's not waterproof for nothing.

I just cleaned it with soap and water and voila it's fresh and cleaned!
I was scared to try it with water even though it's water proof sometimes things can go wrong LOL.
Now I'm just waiting for the speakers to dry out so I can test the sound quality.
Thanks

I hear you lol
Even the z is waterproof I too haven't tried to run it under tap water ever once since I got the phone.

Water sink cleans the dust for good done it a couple times, right, it's waterproof for a reason. Haven't tried using soap tho.. I'm afraid tthe phone will slip off my hand and hit the ground

The manual says no soap though...

yeah im afraid to wash mine even though its waterproof

Can of compressed air would do the trick, although not exactly the most portable to have with you out and about.

But isn't supposed to be Dust proof to? IPX5 is for that and IPX7 is for water proof.

By dust proof they mean dust wont go inside [Hardware, chips etc] and ruin your phone. Not dust sticking to your phone/screen gaps.

Water resistant.
I cannot help notice that over and over again I read comments about this mobile being water proof. It is water resistant NOT water proof.
Even the water resistance has limits and this is clearly stated by Sony. I meter of water for 30 minutes though WHY some one would deliberately do that is beyond me. The idea is accidental exposure to some water such as a splash or damp in a bathroom.
I fear Sony may have shot themselves in the foot with the Z as so many customers think they have a water proof phone. I have even read remarks where a customer has taken his phone into the bath with him and then complained he couldn't write on the screen! Absurd behaviour.
I have every confidence some silly person will take his phone diving with him then complain!
The idea is to make the phone usable in areas of dampness like a bathroom and when its raining. Its not meant to be sunk under water even though Sony unwisely do this in their adverts. People being people will abuse the phone expecting it to be something it is not and its NOT water PROOF. Take a look at the watch on your wrist, no watch is water proof. They are graded into categories of water resistance only.
Had to write this as its getting ludicrous the amount of people who are doing strange things with this mobile under the misconception its water proof.

Absolutely!
But you can still rinse it under water, as in Sonys own launch-commercial, to rinse dust and crap off the phone.

Yes but that means dust actually getting inside the casing of the Phone. As said before. Wash under a tap. Sorted.

You can clean it with a soft brush! The one that u use to apply butter on cookies
BE WARNED! DO NOT APPLY BUTTER ON THE PHONE use a clean brush!! LOL!
I use this trick since I bought my X10 and it's super effective!

buy a mini vacuumcleaner, you can also use it for your pc. This is my 1st post so i can't post links, so google "mini vacuum cleaner for pc"

I'd strongly recommend not to use soap. You will stuff the microphone, earpiece or loudspeaker. Goes scrape down your shower screen and take a look at the amount of soap scum that builds up. Even after you completely scrub it all off a shower, it's back again after only a few showers. Thats on a perfectly flat and smooth glass surface with no crevices for the soap to build up in. Won't take long to build up on the tiny little holes, gauze and speaker/mic membranes. I'd even be concerned about limescale build up just from water frequently getting in there.
Water resistance is a great thing to have, but with great power comes great responsibilty :good:

The idea, is for Sony to tell people it's Water Resistant and that you can wash it under water to remove dust. At least, that's just a guess based on Sony's advertising.
I have personally had shower gel, water and soap on my Z not necessarily on purpose but it's designed to use it without worrying about jets of water.
To say that it's meant to avoid dampness in a bathroom is just your opinion and is wrong to be fair, as every phone I ever had was resistant to damp bathrooms.
It's water resistant, as long as you keep the flaps closed. Fact.

Xperia Z crashed all together

Hi! I used my xperia Z in shower for the 3rd time now. suddenly it stopped responding. The screen started slowing down and eventually stopped working all in all. Now the screen is black and the LED is red and its even warm from the back. The emergency shutdown doesnt work. I can see some moisture on the backside on the camera. All the flips were tight when i used it. ATM the phone is in bag of rice but im scared ****less because i need the phone in the army and dont want to send it for repairment. Any help would be awesome.
You shouldn't have used it in the shower in the first place. See this image from the user guide -

So a shower would expose the device to excessive moisture, hot water and liquid chemicals in the form of soap/shampoo, all of which you're not supposed to do.
If water has got inside, I would think something has been damaged, so repair will be necessary unfortunately.

It doesn't matter why - this phone is water resistant up to 1m/30minutes/low pressure and as long as the covers are closed, it cannot die on you - otherwise you claim warranty.
That's what you pay for. And there isn't a "no shower" rule in the manual, so as long as you didn't spill a showergel ( chemicals void your warranty ) on it or sprayed it with what Sony considers a "high pressure" stream of water, and your covers didn't leak ( strips below them are still white ) they'll replace your device.

WRONG. Do not expose to excessive moisture or hot water surely suggests that you shouldn't use the phone in the shower. It is not Sony's fault that some people are idiots and do not read the user guide that is easily accessible through the support app on the phone.
I'm quite sad that this phone has attracted many morons that want to go swimming/snorkling/surfing/bathing/whatever, then blame Sony when their phone breaks. Cretins.

I think that it is you who is wrong. Avoid moisture doesn't mean it's prohibited.
This device has IPX certificate which states that it has been tested and guaranteed as water and dust ingress protected. If Sony applied for a certificate that says your device will survive this and that, saying to avoid it is purely a back-up on their side.
Of course you shouldnt really take a shower with your phone, but IPX certificate guarantees it will survive contact with water - it doesn't matter if accidental or deliberate... otherwise what's the point of bothering with certificates ?
Also, there's no need to call people names, it's not the third grade, doesn't make you 'cool' you know...

We're not fighting mate, just exchanging opinions
Our friend here has slightly different opinion on the matter, and as you said we're both correct - you shouldn't take a shower with your phone, IP certificate or not, but the phone actually should survive that thanks to that certificate as long as you fulfil the requirements ( covers, time, pressure etc ).
Anyway, there are tons of people taking showers with their XZ, washing it, putting it in the sink just for fun - and we only hear single cases of water damage, so I think it's safe to assume it's not a common problem with XZ waterproof build.
If you don't stick to 1m / 30min / low pressure / covers closed / various "do not" rules, you can't blame Sony for anything.

Sea water vs Xperia Z

hey all
just wanted to ask can xperia z go under sea water (in 1.5m and 30 mins) or not as its salty water?

No. You shouldn't go in the sea or below 1m. This info is in the manual available through the 'Support' app on the phone.

While that is an impressive video, it proves what, exactly? The manual tells you not to expose the phone to sea (salt) water. I'm sure they didn't specifically put that in there for nothing.
If I had to guess, I would say that the salt water will probably corrode the seals on the phone, eventually causing them to fail.
Sent from my C6603 using Tapatalk 2
They everything in manuals to avoid lawsuits. It says avoid dust and sand, but the phone ad shows a guy using it covered in road dirt and dust. You have videos of people cooking, swiming with this phone in all kinds of water so its probaby gonna be fine in salt water, only thing I would do is clean it with fresh water afterwards cause salt can get into speakers and corrode metal and plastic. Summer is coming and I'll be tempted to film some water shenanigans.

It's exactly as you say. Sea salt corrodes rubber from which they made the seals.
You can easily submerge the phone in sea/salt water, but if you keep doing it and won't "rinse" it afterwards to wash the salt away - you may damage the seals someday.
Regarding the manual... it's obvious XZ can survive most of those things - but Sony needs to place it there as a backup, oterwise they would have to replace every single broken device, and frankly they can't allow themselves to do so.

LMFAO at the people that think the manual doesn't apply to them and that they can go swimming in the sea and stuff with the phone. I don't understand the mentality of it. Either you're very rich and can afford to buy new stuff when you destroy it or just don't care about your expensive property.
Do what you want with your own property guys, just don't advise others that it's fine to do these things and don't come back here complaining when your Z is toast!

Unfortunately that is the mentality of some. Either it explodes or its fine, never considering a slower ongoing threat. It may be fine after the 1st 10 uses then what? the seal breaks.
Fresh water damage may be fine too if you turn off the device as fast as possible and let completely dry but what about sea water damage on the internal circuit boards?
Water is water so if they say it is waterproof then it can take water of any kind fresh/salt initial as long as seals are not damage, but just remember, sony does not cover water damage under warranty.

There is a limit for WHAT mate. There's a good reason why Sony says "no sea water".
Look at what happens to rubber exposed to sea/salt water for a very long time:
Now, remember that the thing that protects your XZ are rubber seals beneath the covers. You don't want that to happen to them, do you ?
It will be fine if you treat it with sea water, once, twice, even 10 times or 100. But doing that might damage the seals and eventually break your device, and Sony will deny your warranty because they'll immediately know what happened.
Just a friendly reminder to all - we don't want any Xperias dead, do we

[Q] Xperia Z Design Flaw?

Hello everyone.
I've had to send my Xperia Z a week ago for repairs, due to water damage.
Under the further inspection, all the water indicators placed within the ports of the phone were white, not red.
As such, I believe that the cause of the water damage is most probably caused by a design flaw of the Xperia Z in general.
As I understand, the glass back panel of the Xperia Z is removed through a heating process that weakens the adhesive between the back panel and the chassis of the phone.
Thus, I believe that due to heat issues with the Xperia Z, the adhesive used to seal phone is weakened in that area (top left hand corner, beside the back camera lens), possibly compromising the phone's ability to repel water.
I've seen display sets of the Xperia Z phones, and I've also noticed the issue on those sets.
Here's the link that shows the problem in detail: http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/127732
Have any of you noticed the same issue, especially when your phone gets heated up? (I've posted up a similar thread on another forum)
It's not a design flaw, all major parts of all phones stick together with just glue. If it wasn't glue then how for example would people be able to replace a broken screen?

I'm not saying that the glue is a design flaw (if there even is a design flaw), but rather, the way the phone was designed is what causes one corner of the back panel to flex upwards (probably due to heat issues).

i agree. whenever my XZ gets hot the headphone jack flap pops open. the heats causing something to distort in the frame.
Have this issue too.
Yes. I believe Sony overlooked the amount of heat generated from the phone. The phone should be able to withstand the heat generated by itself and not deform in any way.
Others are seeing the same problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2304680
Imagine how it's going to be in 1.5 years when your phone has been used thoroughly (including the flaps), gone through 1000 heat cycles and has been dropped a couple of times.......
If I would have the Z, I wouldn't feel comfortable putting it underwater in 1.5 years.
I'm happy with my ZL
It appears as though this problem isn't an isolated incident on my end. It might be good if this issue could be brought to the attention of other Xperia Z owners who might be unaware.
I wonder if Sony is aware of this issue...
The real question is that if the water that cames from back could go to the ports from inside...
Honestly, in regards to the question of whether or not water could get through the back to the ports, I don't think so.
I noticed one day that there was condensation covering the back camera. I was immediately worried, as I didn't know what happened. I thought maybe it was because it was humid outside and it formed within the phone.
The next day, I dunked it in a cup of water. All was fine, no problems. This was about 2 weeks ago.
Then, last weekend, I took the phone in the pool with me and took some pictures and video. I submerged it completely.
Yesterday, I put it in another cup of water to demonstrate it's certification to a friend.
The device still works to this day. So, I'm not sure whether or not the water will effect anything besides the camera. The camera also hasn't fogged up at all, which leaves me to wonder if it somehow fixed itself or if the adhesive got hot again and then was pressed together while in my pocket. Nonetheless, it still works. I will just make sure to be a little cautious. I don't want to lose such a beautiful device.

I also had camera lens covered by condensation half an hour after washing my Xperia Z. All the flaps are still white, so I thought it could be because I whashed it at the shower hot water instead natural temperature water at the sink. So I washed it on cold water to test. It seems to be ok at the moment, but 30, 40 minutes later camera lens were condensed again. I decided to keep my phone away from water, and when cleaning it with a towel I noticed the back glass cover was a litte lifted on the left side, not enough to see it, but I can fell it when firmly pressing it. I hope they use a stronger glue on Z1 or why not, screws!

Lol a good method of securing the frame would be ideal, as this IS a water resistant device... But overall they did I nice job, I just think they should have paid a little more attention to the heating of the device in strenuous situations. The fact that the device gets hot enough that the adhesive begins coming off or getting lose is a huge problem for Sony.
:silly:
back panel lift and dead camera
This issue is very real... My z now has a broken camera and Sony refuse to acknowledge the issue exists so no warranty.
in reading their documentation the phone is not waterproof as claimed in adverts. So be very careful of it.
hopefully the module i have ordered should sort it..
fingers crossed.

Does it have the waterproof issues of the Z?

I'm thinking of buying, but I'm not sure if Sony has fixed the faulty back panel housing or whatever the reason caused the Xperia Z to have water leaks inside with all flaps closed.
Seems that the Z1 has additional bezel above the front and back glass, do you guys think it is for keeping the glass plates in plase?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXPbq-PuqC8
There's your answer. None of these phones are waterproof. It's all false advertising. The commercials show you can take it swimming in a pool, but the manual and the fine print say NO. No to pool with chlorine, no to beach with sand and salt water, no to shower with soap, no to using it while wet because the touchscreen won't work, no to EVERYTHING. This is barely a feature unless you REALLY are afraid of spilling some clean ice water at a restaurant. Most phones can survive that already. With the faulty waterproofing of the entire Z line, you also sacrifice the quality of the speakers and the microphone because they require a membrane to repel water, heavily muffling them.

You know why they state that it shouldn't be used in salt water or in swimming pools? Because IPX8 test was made using clean water! That is why it is certified for clean water! This is just the specification of certificate. Get your facts straight first.
It will survive both swimming pool and sea water but you'll have to wash it after that with clean water. And yes, you can take it with you to shower just don't wash it with soap. But hey, who is insane enough to wash his device with soap!

Xperia Z is only IP 57 while Xperia Z1 is IP 58
Z1 also has a hardware camera button, so you don't need to touch the no working screen underwater to take video/pictures now.
Funny. I used my xz in my pool all the time. No problem.

First of all When u spent some enough bucks on a phone, you always try to be careful like holding the baby... Your phone doesnt need to swim or take shower everyday even humans wont bother nowadays... ... And you are not going to put in water overnight instead of ur bedside table... But when you walk in the streets suddenly rain comes and its all wet, or you drop it suddenly into water in the roads/streets , it can cause no damage... and In case you are bold enough to take ur phone to swimming pool/beach and want to take some snaps this phone is ready for it...

lol I like your style.
I hate to admit it but I think I like it a little more cause it looks like my psp.
seeing that the back cover of the Z1 is only glued on again, like on the Z, I'm wondering if it's going to start to lift in the future and compromise the waterproofness?!
I'm currently on the XZ which has the lifted back cover and amazon will refund me what I paid in April because of this defect! I guess I'll put a few Euros on top of it and get the Z1.
Having currently this issue, this is of very much interest to me and also if the phone is going to heat up like the XZ and thermal throttling sets in....

im confused, if it's glued on then isn't it false advertising to be saying its a unibody enclosure?

No, that does not answer my question. I asked if the Xperia Z1 has the same flaw as the Xperia Z with the back cover lifting, not if a phone can be wateeproof, but thanks for taking the time to try to answer my question. I believe there's a topic here in xda on which you can educate us all on the "no phone is waterproof" topic. But since that wasn't my quiestion, please stick to the topic.

Yes, that seems reassuring, hope they've addressed the Z issue somehow

Well, there seems to be a screw in a interesting position near the flash, could it be related to the back plate lifting issue?
Also, Z1 has additional plastic bezel wich may or may not be there to act as a 'retainer' for the glass plates...?

I had the Z (Just changed to the Z1) and I took it in the shower, in swimming pools, in rock pools, in beer... almost any kind of liquid you can think of and it's fine! I never had the back plate issue and the phones water resistance worked perfectly, even to make some underwater Instagrams!

Dew inside camera?

So i was out in the cold weather today, and when i wanted to take a picture with my gear when i got in i saw that it was all blurry, and that there was dew on the inside? Has anyone else had this problem with their watch, or should i return mine?
I'm certain that it's from the cold weather, i haven't been near any water with it.
Here's a picture i took with the watch, quite blurry because there's dew on the inside:

I hope it's just our specific devices that are faulty, and not the device as a whole.
I'll try to return mine and order a new, i hope it doesn't happen again.
if it has moisture in it like with the thread about sweat entering it, shouldnt you remove the moisture first? just curious if it will work fine again once the moisture is gone....

Well, i'm not very hardware technical, how would i do that? Remove the glass from the lens?
This is supposed to be water resistant. It should not get moisture in there.

DO NOT SELF REPAIR YOUR GEAR.
You should return the watch to the store of origin requesting either a full refund or an exchange.
This is a repeat thread. This subject is being debated on another thread. IT APPEARS this COULD be a design fault. IF this is the case Samsung will need to recall all watches and resolve the situation.
I had some doubts about the IP rating of the gear. Now the more I read threads here from owners who share identical problems I am truly starting to get concerned that the Gear has one or two major design flaws. Second flaw being those exposed contacts at the back. Water or perspiration could cause a short.
Very mixed bag is the gear. Superb technology in some areas and absolutely useless in others.
Regards
Oh, you could place the watch on a tray, or in a bag, of rice in the sun, this will dry out the lens until the next time.
It's rating of IP55 so it should be water resistant. I haven't gotten much 'mileage' with mine on the outdoors to merit this. And I'm with the guy^ you should just return it right away.
Hopefully, people having problems with theirs get resolved quickly while it's still under warranty.

Yeah, i just spoke with them and they told me to send it back. I hope it's just a few of the units that are defect, so the new one i receive won't have the same problem. Or i'll just wait for them to send out fixed units.
if the weather is humid this will happen too, just imagine wearing glasses during really humid/hot days and they will form a fog and you wont see a thing lol, same with the gear is what I predict.
so solution is to either protect the camera when temperature/weather is suboptimal or wait till the moisture dries.
this is a first generation product, very likely they did not realize this
you guys might want to invest in this, seems that some cameras definitely go through this

My problem is that after entering a warmer environment, the fog is now water and is located inside the lens, so all my pictures are taken through a drop of water, smearing the picture.

Thanks for the heads-up.
I think I will take some precaution to guard the camera lens from getting too cold ...

Moisture in my camera as well - not related to cold
I had my Galaxy Gear Watch for two days before I started to see moisture forming in the lens. I believe the moisture came from the sweat from my skin. The watch never saw a wet environment; no rain, no water from washing hands, etc. After the third day the image was completely clouded and I could see actual water drops in the area of the lens. If I lightly pressed on the cover with the tiny hole in it behind the camera, water squirted out of the hole. It took about eight presses on the cover before no more water came out.
I let the watch sit for a day in the dry open air and the image remained clouded. I returned it to Best Buy and they replaced it. I bought the protection plan and told them I'd be back every time it gets clouded On the new watch I put a piece of clear tape over the hole after the watch sat in a low humidity area at room temp for a day.
I would love to know:
a) what is that hole in the cover behind the camera meant for?
b) why is the capsule that contains the camera not sealed?! Why would the design give up a place for water to accumulate between the front of the camera and the lens? IF that was sealed there would be no way for water to get in there.
c) how did this ever get through testing (or even design review)?
This is a major concern - Mine arrives today, and we have high humidity in the summer, and I travel to Orlando a lot - So basically, the camera will become useless in almost every environment, eventually. I would have hoped that a $300 watch wouldn't have issues if you happen to get caught in the rain one day.... Or if you actually walk a lot and use the pedometer on the watch .. Love my Samsung stuff, but they do need better QC on their stuff. My Win8 Ativ Pro is a great machine, but they had MAJOR keyboard disconnect issues on release (3 Units in my house, all had the issues).
A day later - new watch with tape over the hole
A day after getting my replacement Galaxy Gear Watch and putting tape over the hole in the cover below the camera I've experienced no fogging problems. What I don't know is if the tape is the reason I have no problems or if the new watch would not have a problem if there was no tape. And, frankly, at this point I don't want to remove the tape to find out.
. One dried out after 1 day and moisture never returned. I have to exchange it tho because the screen bezel sticks out further than watch face.

I just went to use the camera on mine and noticed it's full of water droplets. It's never been out in the rain or in a wet enviroment just normal everyday use. I'll be taking mine back and just getting a refund.
