Hey, I got my Z about a month ago. Until last week there was nothing wrong with the flap (Used headphones here and there, didn't abuse the flap, nor was any pressure applied to it) - But ever since it's just popping open by itself (Not fully, just slightly).
I took a look at the inside of the flap, there's a square gap that's supposed to fit on the slight bump of the headphones connector (Which extrudes a bit).
What I don't know is if there's supposed to be an extra extrusion in the gap that fits into the outlines of the socket (Like with the Charger/USB connector, Micro-SD and Micro SIM slot) or not.
Unfortunately, I do not have the means to provide pictures right now, but I'll see what I can do.
This is important not only because of aesthetics - I can't have a port exposed by itself when the phone is supposed to be water proof/resistant.
Has this happened to anyone else? Any solution in mind?
Thanks in advance!
The extrusion is actually to help you pull the flap out with your fingernail (which is OK).
As for the flap itself, just press it in until it snugly fits back into its place (I do that every time and all is well so far).

I wasn't referring to the small gap for the fingernails (Which all flaps have) - But inside the socket itself, where the headphones hole it self, there's a slight bump (Which surrounds the hole). It's supposed to fit the square gap in the inside of the flap.
Trust me, I've been applying enough pressure to put the flap to fit into its place. It's been fine until recently. Even if it fits perfectly, the flap just pops out by itself in a matter of minutes. I've taken a close look, and there doesn't seem to be anything inside in the way.
I'm puzzled (And slightly upset)...

Send it to repair on Warranty. Could be faulty unit.

Ok this has now started to happen to me, Its been one month I have had the XZ, and just tonight the headphone flap keeps popping out like every half an
hour or so. I cleaned any around the rubber but it still pops open eventually. I was wondering if the headphone jack which slightly protrudes from in the hole
became slightly loose and is pushing the flap back out. I figure that is what Tamirwig was talking about.
Odd thing is, it seems to have resolved itself fur the time being, and I haven't dune anything special as well...
I`ll update if anything changes again.
All the flaps on my z are pretty good, fit in easy but stay in place. My girlfriends one is really hard to close again though - we found a work around. If you line up the side opposite the plastic cord that holds the flap on first, then slide your finger across smoothing out and closing the other side, it tends to slip in much easier. It seems to be a bit different in that the side you have to insert first can be cord side for one flap, but the opposite side for another flap - you may find that switching it up a bit and seeing if any work for you might find a easier way to shut them.
Before we started doing this I was 100% certain that she had a faulty unit but now I'm pretty happy with it and am sure it'll probably out-last my one since the seals are much tighter lol.
We could never close it but just pushing it flat, the whole cover would stick up about 1-2mm and wasn't even remotely flush with the sides. Then about 5-10 mins later it would just pop open again.
I imagine this would occur when dirt, dust or oil builds up in the on the flap or the channel that the flap clicks into. I would recommend putting some spirits on the black part of the flap to clean it, and mostly remove any oily residue that might be on there. Do not put the spirits on the phone, because you are highly likely to touch the strip that reacts to liquid and void your waranty.
I use my headphones every day and I have had this phone for about two months no problems with any flaps
Well it somehow resolved itself after 2 days of popping out lol.

Mine is opening even more than before... I'd be guessing that even if it stopped its only a matter of time until it will start happening again...
I don't think it's a matter of dirt or residue. Spirits didn't help either.
I might take it to fulfill the warranty, but first restore to untouched stock and relock bootloader. If I burn unbranded stock, it should restore the kernel and remove the custom recovery, right?
Solved The Same problem ...
Hello Friends ...
I purchased the phone on the 14th of march and the same thing happened after two weeks of usage. At first i searched both google and xda developers and i could not find any solution.I was worried and was planning to take the phone to the Sony Service Centre as a last resort. But before that i tried if i can solve this problem and i have succeeded.

Here is what i did ...
I took an ear bud ...
Soaked it in spirit (Diluted Alcohol) ...
Thoroughly cleaned in and around the flap with the bud ...
Then cleaned the area in and around the headphone jack where the flap fits into (Taking care NOT TO TOUCH THE LIQUID INTRUSION INDICATOR) ...
And yeah ...
Now it has been more than a month and the the flap is normal ...

I noticed the area inside is a bit dirty - While proceeding to clean it while you mentioned, I noticed just barely of a very tiny rip in the rubber of the inside of the flap itself. I'm 100% sure It wasn't caused by me, but it's very likely what's causing this.
I'm going to have to take it to a Sony Service Center anyhow...

working solution (tested)
use ear cleaning stick having cotton on both sides, use body spray or perfume on it, make it much wet and clean the rubber with soft hand and inside of the port clean all surface and let it dry and then close the cover, it will open by itself again.

The other day, I noticed my phone stopped ringing, but was still vibrating. I did everything that I could to try to get the phone to play sound through the external speaker, but I got nothing. I eventually did the ODIN 1 click to restore and I'm still getting no sound. I took the phone apart to check to see if the speaker cable was loose, but everything is in tact...
Does anyone know what Samsung support is like? I loved being able to take my iPhone into any Apple store to get it swapped out for any issues. Is it the same with the Captivate and any AT&T store? I bought the phone from Best Buy.
How long has it been since you got the phone? Since you bought it from best buy I'm guessing you should take it there first if anywhere. They might swap you for a new one within 30 days of the purchase, but that's just a general warranty dealy that may not apply to phones. In any case I'd hit best buy first, because unless you bought it from the at&t store, I'm not sure If they'd help you that much as far as replacements go.

take off the battery cover and press down on the speaker.
Best buy will replace the phone within the 30 day buyers remorse period.
After that you have to go through AT&T Warranty dept (not the store). They will advance you a refurb phone, and give you stuff to send back.
On that note hopefully you are within 30 days so you get a brand new phone from BB.
I just had this happen to me for the first time today, and pushing hard on the speaker fixes it for me, too. For now. Not a good sign. I think today is my 29th day...gotta make a quick decision. Time to read up on restoring to factory default...I've rooted and lagfixed this guy.

i've got a replacement captivate now, but my old one did that once. no sound at all. i rebooted and it came back though.
Same problem
I am having exactly the same problem does anyone know how to fix it? :S i root it yesterday and tried the lag fix thingy.
I had the same problem. It happened on the night of the 29th day of owning the phone, the next day I took it to the closest AT&T Warranty Exchange center (or whatever they call it) and got a new phone.
I had this happen to me a few weeks ago, lucky for me it had only been like two weeks since I had bought the phone. I got it from At&t and just went back there and they gave me a new one. Does anyone know what causes this?
Fixed
I had the same problem...had tried the Odin One-Click restore, tried restoring, and several other things.
Do what VZSpyder says above...remove the battery cover and press down on the speaker. It immediately started working.
<<-- also a victim of the speaker issue. Pressing down on it has worked for about a month now. But the whole issue is a sign of larger problems I feel plague this handset.
I learned the hard way not to trust this thing as an alarm clock when the speaker glitch started showing itself.
The Samsung captivate has been by far the most problem prone phone or PDA I have had in my possession since 2002.
Actually, I haven't found any activity I can truly trust this phone to perform. It seems to randomly be unable to fulfill every task it is theoretically capable of.
Solutions to Captivate Speaker Issue
Ok, so I had my Samsung Captivate speaker cut out entirely last night and was, needless to say, very disappointed. However, I still believe it is a good phone, I cling to this notion despite the ribbing I took from my friends when the speaker cut out during a YouTube video. Grrrr... Anyway, and more to the point, what follows is my fix.
First, I pressed firmly on the speaker as suggested by many bloggers and the speaker started working again. Hooray! However, like many Captivate owners, I find this temporary fix, "unacceptable on principle alone." Ever the tinkerer and problem-solver, I thought there must be a low-tech solution to this issue as it appears to be related to the small 16mm x 5mm speaker unit’s unseen electronic contacts.
I thought: “If only there were a way to provide constant gentle pressure to the speaker unit without interfering with its performance or voiding the phone’s warranty, gentle but firm pressure that would stabilize the speaker unit and perhaps add a level of protection from vibration.” Here is what I came up with and I believe that it is quite possibly the lowest cost solution ever stumbled upon by a mere mortal.
I took one small "3M Command™ Strip," of the 16mm width variety associated with 3M's wonderful "Damage-Free Hanging Wall Solution" collection of devices. At one end of each Command™ Strip there is a 5mm section of the strip that is sticky on one side, the so-called “wall-side,” while the other side is adhesive free. I cut this end off producing a 5mm wide and 16mm long strip which has friendly adhesive only on one side. I then cut that strip to produce one 2mm wide and one 3mm wide strip exactly 16mm long.
Since the speaker unit is about 16mm long and 10mm wide, I then applied the 2mm x 16mm strip at the outermost boundary of the top of the speaker unit (closest to the camera lens) and the 3mm x 16mm strip at the outermost boundary at the bottom of the unit (closest to the battery). This seems to leave the tiny speaker grill, roughly 5mm wide, unimpeded and once the metal cover is put back in place it could, in theory, provide enough gentle pressure on the speaker unit to stabilize it and perhaps prevent a loss of electrical contact in the event of vibration and associated shifting or, God forbid, a small drop.
Stupid Speakers...
I have a similar problem with my Captivate's sound. Randomly, the sound will drop to almost nothing, though it is still audible if you put it right up to your ear.... Just barely.
It seems to "fix" itself if I gently tap the phone or drop it on a table or something... Could this be something similar? Perhaps electrical connections not being seated firmly?
it IS an electrical connection not sitting correctly.
press firmly on the left area beside the grill.
or take back for warranty.
if you dont have warranty, open it up press the connection back down and apply a peice of scotch tape over it.
Replacement doesn't help. I've got a new speaker put in by samsung .and 2days later. Same thing. I just havea small piece of paper behind the back plate to keep pressure on it.works well

If you phone is still under warranty call/take it in 3 times. After 3 times you can request a different phone. Just be sure to pick one that is atleast as good or better.
I have used this method to get pseudo free upgrades for years now.

Well? Managed to fix it? I do not quite understand where to stick tape, someone tell me?
Friendly warning -
Do not apply water (or probably any other liquids) to the screen. There is a very significant risk of it entering the LCD layers. The plastic frame is not sealed at the bottom where the "n" button is. The other three sides have adhesive tape applied. Why they didn't seal up the bottom is a real curiosity.
I used just a wet paper towel with some dish soap on it because I wanted to remove all dirt before applying a screen protector. This was enough to get water in and it went almost all the way to the top of the LCD and was very obviously visible. The screen wiping probably helped it get up in there. I was horrified, of course.
I tried blowing a fan at it for 24 hours and it did nothing. So I took it apart to see if it was possible to separate the LCD glass but it is not possible without breaking because there is an extremely thin layer of glass in there that breaks if flexed. I also noted that there is an oil layer to ensure a transparent connection between the layers of glass. I did this a month ago so I'm not sure but I believe there are 3 layers to the panel.
Actually this got me to go out and try a Acer Iconia A100 for a bit. I returned it though because the LCD is junk and the battery life is not so great. But wow it was so fast. Still, I'd rather have slow and an IPS screen than a TN screen with bad viewing angles. So I ended up buying one of those $150 Overstock.com refurb Nook Colors. $150 washing experience disaster.
The "irony" of this is that I had run without a screen protector for 6 months and managed to destroy the unit when working on applying a protector!
Did you try putting it in rice?

You never want to use water to clean electronics, that's pretty much the first thing one should learn owning any electronics. I prefer rubbing alcohol, if it does "get" anywhere it shouldn't, it'll dry very quickly and is less conductive than water.
One thing to remember is if you ever do get any of your electronics wet try submerging our device in rice overnight, it should absorb the water.

Dry rice of course.. Or desiccant packs that can be found in pleather products, such as purses at Wal Mart, etc..
I regularly wipe my Nook down using a damp microfiber cloth, and it seems fine. I'd put the device on a horizontal surface, gently give the surface a swift wipe or two, and dry/polish it using yet another bit of cloth. I never needed to use soap, but I'd probably choose ethanol or isopropanol for more extensive cleaning, anyway. Drugstore alcohol tends to leave behind a visible residue (bitter, too... don't ask) so I like to mix my own cleaning "cocktail."

too bad about your nook. thanks for the heads up ^.^
Alcohol (incl isopropyl) definitely attacks some plastics, rubbers and various finishes. That's why I went with water+soap.
It was just amazingly easy to get water into the LCD. It is easier than it should be. If you were to accidentally spill a drink on it I think water would definitely enter. It is very unfortunate that they left the bottom open as it is. It lines right up with the seam of the LCD layers. 3 sides are effectively sealed but there is nothing at the bottom side. Alcohol would get in there too and maybe affect the layers or oil.
Use no liquid on this thing.
Invisishields are great!

I would avoid any wet-applying screen protector...
Screenguard
I use screenguard all the time and it works great..takes off all the greasy finger prints and make Nook Glass shine...never had an issue with it..
Just be very careful how much goes near the bottom by the 'n' button. But good to hear you haven't seen it get in the LCD.
My NC still worked with the water inside but the water totally messed up the background of the LCD. Looked like a funky puddle in the background. Damn did that suck. You have no idea how disgusting it feels to have ruined the NC only because I wanted to finally put on a screen protector! After 6 months of being bare screen I wanted to try to end the messy finger prints annoyance.
I use a little spritz of the cleaning solution that came with my glasses and wipe dry with the cloth that came with the Nook all the time. Never had an issue. Maybe I'll be a little more careful in the future.
One must use instant rice for drying out electronics. Regular rice is like mamory glands on a bull.

Good point. I almost forgot about that... The cloth I use tends to wick away the oils and such, so I never needed to use solvents other than water. Alcohol also exhibits less surface tension than water, and that might help it get into the LCD.

Funny, I've used Windex over 6 times to clean off the screen of my Nook with no ill effects. I've sprayed it on the screen directly too and it's run down by the bottom.
Maybe I just haven't been liberal enough with my use of liquids. Next time I guess I will have to try the bathtub.

Lol. Ya I have been thinking of silicone. It would probably be necessary to disassemble the NC to do that though. Silicone is really easy to make a mess with too.
I did some searching on NC water damage and I'm not alone it seems. Other tablets and phones I've used have better protection around the LCD. Nook Color engineers only sealed 3 sides with their design. There is a narrow rubber gasket that can be seen at the bottom but apparently it doesn't work so great.
Btw, Windex has ammonia in it and that can cloud plastics with enough exposure. Bad for LCDs with plastic surface.
so, i didnt see the OP respond to all the rice comments.....do you still have the nook and have you put it in a box/bag/tub of rice yet??

No my original NC is dead because after 24 hours of ineffectual fan blowing I tried taking it apart and separating the LCD layers. Unfortunately there is an extremely thin pane of glass that breaks super easily. The LCD literally slides apart though. There's only some kind of oil layer between the 3 or so different glass layers in it (for transparency). No adhesive or sealant.
The rice idea sounds interesting but I'm not sure if it would work with how the water is pressed in there and also the oil layer that might seal the water in. The rice / desiccant idea sounds like a good way to dry out devices though.

Making this, detailed step-by-step, for those who don't want to dig thru that thread (Hopefully I'm not violating any rules. If so, Mods please replace my original post with this one)
ok I think I've discover the cause of the lift.
Got a replacement due to screen lift and guess what the new one had a slight lift on the lower left.
I figure must be a loose screw, it's not as bad as the old one where the whole left side bulged out.
So I open it and found all the screws to be snug. So I unscrewed the lower left, thinking it's too tight and that's where I discover the cause.
It's not that the screws are too loose, it's that there isn't enough space between the frame & the glass. So the tighter you screw it in, the further you're pushing the screen out, causing the lift.
Here's the simple solution I came up with.

You'll need the following:
Nexus 7 with back cover removed
Pill Blister Pack (Allergy pills from walmart shown)
Small screwdrivers
Scissors and/or knife
Sewing Needle (not pictured)
needle nose pliers OPTIONAL (for those with thick fingers)
First you need to make a hole in the blister for the screw to go thru.
Here I'm using a sewing machine like a drill press to create my hole.
Next, cut out a rectangle and use your small screwdriver (Bigger than the needle, but smaller than the screw)
This will make the hole bigger for the screw to fit. While blister is still on screwdriver, use your knife and run it around the excess plastic created by the screwdriver.
Remove the blister and trim the corners so that it'll fit in the round frame
Remove the screw from the frame and slide the blister in between the frame
Screw the screw back snug, DON'T OVER TORQUE IT!
Right away the screen lift is gone where the blister is installed. Repeat for each screw where the screen is lifting up.
Cut away the excess so you can put the cover back on
Don't cut it flush to the frame, leave a little so you can grab it and remove it if you need to.
OPTIONAL - use a flathead to push that little bit down to eliminate any chance of obstructing the back cover.
Snap the back cover back on and enjoy your flush screen.
depending on how much lift you have, you might have to use 2 or more to fill the gap. But beware, the more you add the thicker the frame will be and you might run into issues with the back cover not fitting snug.
Looks interesting, might give this a whirl later.
ya!
After receiving my replacement today only to find out it had the same problem I tried this and so far so good! I hope it stays! Thank you for this!
Awesome job :good:
Update: Failed. Spent Hour trying this. Keeps coming back just putting the case back on. Ill try again on Monday. Used same thickness plastic, then tried thinner, then tried IDE Floppy Cable (ASUS brand haha).
I am sending this back anyways. Here is my before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jDIgiWFPgc

Tried it with 1 on top. 2 on top. 2 on bottom (Pictured below). All 4.
I'll confirm this is still working 24 hours later and feels more solid than it did when I first took It out of the box. Thank you so much! I started the RMA process and received the links to order my replacement when I read they hold another $225 from your account until they receive the original back and determine I caused no damage. You saved me a lot of time/hassle/and money being held from me for at least 1-2 weeks.

Yes thank you man, I tried it when you first posted it yesterday, I can vouch for the fix in this thread as i did the previous one, so happy that it is working for me and several others, it is well worth the 10-20 minutes to perform the fix.
I wish this would work on mine, but my problem is clearly related to a bad adhesive job. I'm almost tempted to re-glue it myself considering there is nothing else wrong with the thing but I'll give Google one more chance to send me a perfect one.
How about a donation link? I'd like to buy you a beer or 2 for your fix.
Wonderful job with the pictures man, they really helped. I can confirm that this works perfect for me too. I just did not but the tablet immediately feels better. No squishyness at all. With the previous fix (tightening the screws) the screen still felt squishy. Nothing now. It feels just as sturdy as the right hand side.

I initially thought mine may have been adhesive related.. but turns out after this fix, it really is not.
Edit: id highly suggest giving this a try, it isnt difficult, probably cannot be detected as "user modification" if you remove the makeshift washers. If you dont want to that's your call, but i think the problem is still fixable with this method.

I dunno man, I can actually see underneath the glass on mine, that's how bad it is. I might give this a shot while I'm waiting for my replacement but I really don't expect it to do any good. I am happy for everybody who is finding success with this, just don't see myself being one of those lucky people.

I really would give this a shot...I'm convinced the issue is not adhesive related. My tab doesn't actually have a screen lift issue... it has been making a crunching sound that i discovered is actually just the black tape/insulation that the little black foam piece is glued to. If you remove the back cover and just fiddle with that black insulation you should hear the crunching i described. I am 90% sure that the crunching sound people are reporting is really not going to affect your devices integrity at all. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that one.
So far so good. Let's see whether it stays that way or not. The left side feel solid now
Thanks for the fix and the photos.

I just opened up my buddy's N7 with him, and check this out. It looks like the N7 already has some type of circular washers in this spot. OP, and those of you who have done this - did your N7s have these circular washers as well, or was that space totally hollow? I couldn't tell from your pictures. I've attached pictures so you can see what I'm talking about. It doesn't look like there's room in here to add the blister pack washers you guys are talking about, unless I really have to struggle to shove them in. Is it possible some N7s were missing these washers?

No, those were there on all of them. Those do not come out as far as i can tell. The blister washer goes in between the black round part and the back plate where the screw enters. Its snug but it should be, this will allow you to snug up the screws and alleviate the pressure on the screen. People seem to forget that only adhesive would not cause glass to bend, it would just sit loose but not protrude upward without a force behind it.
I just did what op did and everything is working fine. Fantastic work!

You, sir, are brilliant. I just did the fix and it seems to be holding well. I'll see how it is tomorrow but the logic behind it seems solid.
Thank you for sharing!
Performed the fix, and it seems to have fixed the problem on my friend's N7. The OP is smarter than stinking Asus! Bravo.
One minor issue on the N7 I did this on is the back doesn't seem to be completely flush with the bezel now in the area with the washers, but this beats the screen lifting.
Have people allowed enough time after performing this and rechecked their screens? Everyone was saying retorquing the screws was the fix, and it initially looked like it did help, but eventually the screen came back up.
Thanks for the fix, but to be honest all this seems to be ridiculous, there should be no defect in a product you had to pay good money for. I'm hoping a fix comes soon out of the box.
For those of you who have tried the various fixes on this forum and are having no luck with the screen lift issue, then this fix may be for you. I believe the screen lifting from the frame is caused by something internal that is pushing the screen upwards and causing the adhesive failure. This fix will use glue to re-establish the bond between the screen and the frame.
This fix involves taking the back cover off and removing some screws and creating a gap between the frame and screen for the glue. Oh, and while the glue cures, you will not be able to use your device for at least a few hours depending on the glue you use.
If this is too much for you or if you are addicted to your device and cannot put it down to let the glue cure, there is an alternate glue fix that is faster, does not require any disassembly, but it uses super-glue - which dries too fast for my liking. The post is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29220469&postcount=422 - Thanks to acegolfer for this.
*** DISCLAIMER ***
I'm not responsible if you break your device doing this fix.
Tools required
1. Guitar pick - or something flat to remove back cover
2. Small phillips head screwdriver
3. Toothpick
4. Glue
5. Damp cloth/ cloth - to wipe excess glue
6. Needle or tack - to apply glue.
7. Rubber bands, eraser, book - anything to keep screen in place and frame against the screen.
First things first. the glue I used is not super-glue, it is epoxy. Why? Because I've had much success using it, but not much luck with super-glue. See pic of the epoxy I used.

Since most of us have screen lift on the left side, these instructions assume the fix will be on that side.
Steps:
1. Turn off N7 and take back cover off
2. Remove the 4 screws on the left side.
3. Take the toothpick and cut it in half. It should now look like this:
4. Now flip the N7 over. Using the guitar pick (or the tool you used to take back cover off). CAREFULLY insert between the frame and screen to create an initial gap. then take one side of the toothpick and insert it to one side of the guitar pick. then take the other side of the toothpick and insert it to the other side of the guitar pick. take guitar pick out, it should now look like this:
5. Open up the glue. Squeeze a pea size amount onto a disposable piece of hard plastic. Even though the one I bought is self-mixing, I mixed it again using the tack, then used the damp cloth to clean off the tack.
6. Take the tack and dip it into the glue. The tack should now have some glue on the tip. CAREFULLY place glue in the gap you created in step 4. You do not need to fill it up, just a small amount. You can either place the glue continuously or spaced out at even points. I chose to put glue at evenly spaced out points approx 1/4" apart. Alternatively, the glue came with a fine tipped applicator (see pic), so you could have applied the glue directly into the gap, but that could be messy.
7. When the glue has been applied, remove the toothpicks and close the gap. Some glue will be squeezed out so wipe it off with the damp cloth. Flip N7 over and put the screws back.
8. take rubber bands and place them evenly spaced around the N7 to keep frame against the glass. then put an eraser on the screen to keep screen flush with frame. LEAVE THE BACK COVER OFF. You do not want anything that could possibly push the screen up at this point.
9. After putting screws back and applying rubber bands, double-check to see that there is no gap and the screen is flush with frame (similar to the right side).
10. I placed a phone book on top which I did not include in the picture.
11. If everything looks fine, let sit for at least 2 hours before touching it. If you used the same epoxy glue I did, I would not turn it on for at least 10 hours. I also did not put the back cover on until the 10 hour mark.
Final result.
I did this about 2 days ago. Since then, I've tested it by running some tegra 3 optimized games like Zen pinball and riptide until the rear lower left of the N7 felt quite warm. I know that when I performed the shim fix and the screw tightening, the screen would have lifted at this point - but it didn't with this glue fix. In fact, after gluing the frame to the screen, it feels more solid because there is no longer any sponginess when holding with my left hand and absolutely no creaks. Also, it feels good to see that after you've punished the tegra 3 chipset, the heat generated didn't cause the screen to lift.
Hope this helps some of you. If you feel that I missed something or have some suggestions, please let me know.
Cheers.
Thanks for both trying and posting this. You don't say at which point you replaced the screws? I'm guessing it was when the glue had dried?
I just did the following:
Started transformers playing [was plugged in to power]
Set it on repeat..
waited about 30 mins - so it got a little warm..
Used the same rubber band / eraser trick you did..[without removing the back case] to hold the edge of the screen down.
Waited about 4 hours - film on repeat
Unplugged, turned it off and left it over night [about 12 hours]
Screen has held down for the past week - so sign of lifting.
So maybe worth trying before you go for the glue - and 100% non warranty issues
I think you've hit the nail on the head here.
Looking at THIS teardown it seems clear that the screws play no part in how the display sits within the silver/black frame. The screws hold the internals to the frame and the display is glued to the frame. If the display is raised, then it's the adhesive not working. If you can push it to be flush, then its obviously not the screws pushing it out.
Looks like this is the only real permanent solution. I only wish there was a way to do this without actually bending the display up like that. My luck says I'd crack it! >.<

That should have been part of step 7. Edited. Thanks for noticing my error.
The fix looks great, no screen lift and no sideways bulge. Can I ask what sizes are those rubber bands you used?

I don't know exactly. I just had a jar of rubber bands and I chose ones that I thought would apply enough pressure to the frame to keep it from separating from the screen.

Ah that looks safer. Though I'll maybe wait for a bit until I'm less bothered about it being in perfect condition. My Xperia Arc had the famous casing crack and I decided to just glue it and got the glue everywhere and it'd dried before I got to wipe it off. I'm clearly still as skilled as a small child with glue. Not too bad but certainly not as shiny now >.<

I'm like you with the glue - that's why I used a type that takes minutes to set instead of just 30-60 seconds. It just dries too fast sometimes. You could probably try the epoxy instead of the crazy glue.

Definitely calling superglue 'crazy glue' from now on. I'll have to look around and find the strongest slow-drying glue available. Waiting around for another hot day though as that's the only time it raises enough to glue it, and given that I'm in the UK this could take some time.
padding my screws with the pill packaging seem to fix it for me even though mine was rather small lift. if anything continues or i see more lift i will definitely try this. good looks on the DIY
This is probably the most direct and effective way to solve the lifting screen problem.
I used 3M Scotch glue to stick the screen tight on the bezel.
The gap was really small so I used a IV catheter to drip to glue into the gap. (Yes, I work in a hospital)
After 24 hours, I tested every possible way to make the screen lift but it remained solid and beautiful.
For those who still have screen lifting or side bulging problem, just try this solution. There's no way it would fail.

No real screen lift for me, just the crazy sounds when pressing the left side of the screen. Depending on the type of fix sometimes the right side would make sounds also. After trying three separate fixes and all failing once the N7 heats up this is the one thing that really seems to have fixed the issue. Thank you!!!

Did you have any screen mushiness or waves when you pressed near where your screen lift issue was? And if so, did applying this fix help at all?

I think this worked for me. Except I didn't read about using toothpicks as spacers. I just found a really pointy toothpick and dipped the tip in superglue then dabbed the edge of the raised screen. Then pushed it in place and held for several minutes. I don't know if it'll hold or if its even doing anything. I'll have to see in the morning. Next time I'll spread the side bevel out using the guitar picks and toothpicks.

Just did the glue fix and got a little on the trim, it dried so fast I couldn't get it off. So while I rubbed it with too gone and scratched with my finger nail I thing the paint began to come off. Is it possible to take the tablet that far apart to paint the bezel or is it part of the screen?
Maybe I'll just rub all the silver off!! Lol

glue
Okay I tried a bunch of suggestions before glueing like tightening and loosening the screws as well as taking off the little square of black foam. Unfortunately, none of these methods permenently resolved the lifting screen problem. Then I tried the glue method. I loosened up the 4 screws on the left side and I seperated the screen slightly from the bezel with a few toothpicks. To make sure everything was nice and clean I used 91% isopropyl alcohol to clean the mating surfaces. At this point something interesting happened. When I took out the toothpicks and pressed things back together the reactivated glue stuck the glass back on. However, I didn't want to take any chances so I put a little more alcohol on the seam and spread things apart so that I could use some 5 minute epoxy to make things more permanent. After I applied the glue I put the back on and pressed everthing together with some rubberbands and a foam pad. Any glue that oozed out was immediately cleaned off with a cloth and alcohol. Then I left it alone overnight to set fully, and things are looking good so far.

You could touch it up with some silver paint.
Hello everyone.
I've had to send my Xperia Z a week ago for repairs, due to water damage.
Under the further inspection, all the water indicators placed within the ports of the phone were white, not red.
As such, I believe that the cause of the water damage is most probably caused by a design flaw of the Xperia Z in general.
As I understand, the glass back panel of the Xperia Z is removed through a heating process that weakens the adhesive between the back panel and the chassis of the phone.
Thus, I believe that due to heat issues with the Xperia Z, the adhesive used to seal phone is weakened in that area (top left hand corner, beside the back camera lens), possibly compromising the phone's ability to repel water.
I've seen display sets of the Xperia Z phones, and I've also noticed the issue on those sets.
Here's the link that shows the problem in detail: http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/127732
Have any of you noticed the same issue, especially when your phone gets heated up? (I've posted up a similar thread on another forum)
It's not a design flaw, all major parts of all phones stick together with just glue. If it wasn't glue then how for example would people be able to replace a broken screen?

I'm not saying that the glue is a design flaw (if there even is a design flaw), but rather, the way the phone was designed is what causes one corner of the back panel to flex upwards (probably due to heat issues).

i agree. whenever my XZ gets hot the headphone jack flap pops open. the heats causing something to distort in the frame.
Have this issue too.
Yes. I believe Sony overlooked the amount of heat generated from the phone. The phone should be able to withstand the heat generated by itself and not deform in any way.
Others are seeing the same problem.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2304680
Imagine how it's going to be in 1.5 years when your phone has been used thoroughly (including the flaps), gone through 1000 heat cycles and has been dropped a couple of times.......
If I would have the Z, I wouldn't feel comfortable putting it underwater in 1.5 years.
I'm happy with my ZL
It appears as though this problem isn't an isolated incident on my end. It might be good if this issue could be brought to the attention of other Xperia Z owners who might be unaware.
I wonder if Sony is aware of this issue...
The real question is that if the water that cames from back could go to the ports from inside...
Honestly, in regards to the question of whether or not water could get through the back to the ports, I don't think so.
I noticed one day that there was condensation covering the back camera. I was immediately worried, as I didn't know what happened. I thought maybe it was because it was humid outside and it formed within the phone.
The next day, I dunked it in a cup of water. All was fine, no problems. This was about 2 weeks ago.
Then, last weekend, I took the phone in the pool with me and took some pictures and video. I submerged it completely.
Yesterday, I put it in another cup of water to demonstrate it's certification to a friend.
The device still works to this day. So, I'm not sure whether or not the water will effect anything besides the camera. The camera also hasn't fogged up at all, which leaves me to wonder if it somehow fixed itself or if the adhesive got hot again and then was pressed together while in my pocket. Nonetheless, it still works. I will just make sure to be a little cautious. I don't want to lose such a beautiful device.

I also had camera lens covered by condensation half an hour after washing my Xperia Z. All the flaps are still white, so I thought it could be because I whashed it at the shower hot water instead natural temperature water at the sink. So I washed it on cold water to test. It seems to be ok at the moment, but 30, 40 minutes later camera lens were condensed again. I decided to keep my phone away from water, and when cleaning it with a towel I noticed the back glass cover was a litte lifted on the left side, not enough to see it, but I can fell it when firmly pressing it. I hope they use a stronger glue on Z1 or why not, screws!

Lol a good method of securing the frame would be ideal, as this IS a water resistant device... But overall they did I nice job, I just think they should have paid a little more attention to the heating of the device in strenuous situations. The fact that the device gets hot enough that the adhesive begins coming off or getting lose is a huge problem for Sony.
:silly:
back panel lift and dead camera
This issue is very real... My z now has a broken camera and Sony refuse to acknowledge the issue exists so no warranty.
in reading their documentation the phone is not waterproof as claimed in adverts. So be very careful of it.
hopefully the module i have ordered should sort it..
fingers crossed.
