Is there anyway to FORCE the apps to use the MicroSD memory instead of the Internal storage?
It seems every app I've installed ( Dropbox, Google Docs, Evernote, etc) uses the internal memory. I have a 32GB MicroSD that seems to be useless right now. I tried moving all the apps to SD, but they still use the Internal Memory to store cache/files
I have yet to see a fix for this as well. The way I work around this is if the app saves files to the internal storage there is usually a setting in the settings menu that will allow you to change where it saves files. For instance with the TapeRecorder app. It automatically saves files to the sdcard (which Motorola stupidly named the internal storage for). I go to the settings and change the "sdcard" to "sdcard-ext", then it works!
For the time being, you can use the SD-EXT microsd card for music, videos, pictures, TiBU backups, downloads, etc., but in some cases you need to change some settings to do so. Apps cannot be installed on the external microsd card for now and you should make sure you 'move to phone' any apps which are check marked in the 'media' area or you are subject to losing them.
Sorry this next generation android phone just like Droid X it has dedicated app memory. That memory is used strictly for those apps. U can put 500 apps and not run out of room. SD card is used for media music movies etc

Is this why When I selected "Move to Media Area" the application shortcut disappears from the "All Apps" menu?
I moved 2 games to the "Media Area" and now they are gone... they are still installed, but I have no way of accessing them. (I know they are still installed because when I went to reinstall, it said something about it replacing an app thats already install)
After researching more, and fumbling through the phone I discovered that Motorola has deemed the 8GB of Internal memory as an SDCard.
Another FAIL for Motorola, and I doubt there will ever be a fix for this. I could be wrong, but I don't think so.

Folks, it's the storage naming system in Android. If you go to any forum for any phone with internal and external memory you'll see the same complaints. There are multiple threads about it here.
Even though in Motorola's file manager you see "internal phone memory" and "SD Card", the internal memory is actually "sdcard" and the external is "sdcard-ext". Like I said, it's like this on every brand of phone with this set up.
So, what's happening is the apps are saving to the internal memory because it is, in fact, the SD card. Motorola has tried to remedy this confusion by discontinuing to say "move to SD" and instead now calls it "Move to Media area".
And no, your external SD is not useless. You can still set your photos from the camera to save directly to your external, you can still put music and movies and all kinds of media on your external and your phone will see them just fine. This is why there is a 16GB card included with your phone, so you can use it for media and if you want to move your apps off of the system memory to save space you move it to the 8GB internal area. Of course 8GB is still plenty of space for apps and other media as well

Its a crock of sh1t. Yea you can save media files on the real SD card, but how many apps actually find them? Smooth move Motofùckingrola!
Fortunately with some coaxing and about a month of messing around, DoubleTwist can find media files on sdcard-ext. Its about the only worthy music player that can.

The Stock Music App seems to find the music files just fine on the MicroSD (just add some to try) and the Gallery Finds the Pictures. But I don't give a damn about Music or Pictures.
I have 123MB of the "Internal Memory" (SDCard) left - after I loaded all my work documents (spreadsheets, powerpoints, etc) & E-books. Right now I have to Move the file from the SDcard (InternalMemory) to the SDCard-Ext(MicroSD) after I've edit it and reuploaded it to Google Docs, then if I want to Edit it agian, I have to move it back to the SDCard(Internal Memory) Just so Google Docs will see it again.
Stock? That's okay, I'll pass. I froze those apps with TiBackup.

i use videovault and when i pulled my video vault folder from my old backup and loaded it to the external SD, the VideoVault did not find them. There is no way i will load 4GB of videos into my Internal 8GB card just so i can haz my pronz!
What I noticed is this seems to be very similar to how the Xoom and Honeycomb handles sdcards and internal storage (minus the fact that we still cant write to sdcards on stock honeycomb....) so it could be Motorola setup the phone this way for a smoother migration to Ice Cream Sandwich when it comes out?
If ICS looks anything like the "leaked" video then ill pass.

I have an Asus Transformer android tablet that has absolutely NO trouble at all when it come to read/write access of the MicroSD.
Motorola seems to fudge everything up. But verizon doesnt off any better phones (IMO)
You would think with all the Smart/Nerdy People on this site, someone would come up with a way to Rename the partitions Motorola has setup.
If it was just possible to rename the "SDCard-Ext" To "SDCard" ...
The reason you have no issue is Asus did a hack mod to get the SD card to work. Moto did the same on European xooms but on USA version its a google product there fore moto has no control on software manipulation. As for apps to SD card there is no need the device has dedicated app storage stritctly for apps.

This is essentially the final thing I'm wondering in this Nook HD(+) development world. It seems that the two main options are opening up the stock Nook by enabling the Play store and all the benefits that go with that or CM10 which is essentially turning your Nook in to a Jellybean device.
For me, the clear winner is rooting Stock. For one, I have an HD which means 8gb of storage. I really don't want to tie up my Micro sd slot with an operating system. Also, it's nice to be able to get back to the Nook screen simply as I think its default library function is great for books.
I know CM10 is very popular, and since I am still figuring it out I'd love to hear which method people are using and why.
For me, so far, rooted is better. However, CM is quite feature rich, and once completely stable I suspect I might switch over. I'm interested in more file systems and overclocking for instance.
I've used both to date, and everything you can do on stock+ you can do in CM, except the built in reader (although the Play version is very close) and the app drawer widget. Profiles are nicely implemented on stock too, so that might be important for some family uses.
As for the internal memory, you can get to that now with CM10. And SD cards are fast enough you don't notice any lag. Also, with stock there's always the chance you'll bork something in /system and enter the bootloop issue without a CWM recovery nearby...

Great points all around. What do you mean that I can "get to internal memory on CM10"?
My goal would be to be able to use the portion of an SD card that's not tied up with CM10 as EXternal memory.
I haven't played much with CM10 as it runs poorly from my SD card.
One more thing to note, stock+ isn't recognized by android file manager. I'll have to see if CM10 is.

My take on the situation is that rooted stock is nice (ESP the reader app), but it will not run everything. One case in point, Google Voice. I use it for free texting over wifi. It will not run on rooted stock.
And what he meant about get into internal memory is the media partition (called sdcard in stock) shows up as emmc media storage in CM10.
And what you want is already implemented in CM10. It partitions what it does not need for itself to operate and makes it available for sdcard media. It usually reserves about 3GB for itself and makes the rest of the card available as media space for CM10 use. And it is possible to have stock see that too with the right modifications to stock configuration. But it does you no good since you cannot boot to stock with the CM10 SD in the slot anyway.
What is stock+ that you want recognized? And what is android file manager?

I have a short brief on CM10, and here is my take.
both:
have bugs, some apps working well on one but not another.
CM10:
More freedom, a lot more apps open up and works, and no need to worry about apps that mess with /system.
You lose some sd spaces, and inability to swap sd.
stock:
Required a lot of mod just to get 80-90% of what you can do with cm10
sd card swapable
doesn't work with cm10 sd card, I guess it can but you do need to mod.
Most of the pros and cons have been covered above and my experience is that both can get you to the features most important to you one way or another so it comes down to personal preferences and usage patterns.
For me, the difference came down to keeping stock clean and getting CM10 separate on an SD card. I can pop the SD card out and use my Nook in BN store or sell it without any issues. I did plenty of rooting and re-imaging on my Nook Color before this and I could never get it to a clean factory state again. Even when I cleaned everything and installed stock, Cyanogen logo would still show up on boot.
With my Nook HD I decided to keep the stock image clean.
I'd like to add on CM10, I haven't been able to transfer any programs to the internal sd. Used titanium backup and the os option for it. No go. If anyone knows a way let me know but I had an easier time installing everything with my rooted Nook HD than on CM10.

I don't think that option is available for any device to move an app to internal SD. They always have to be an external SD (apps2SD). And you can install them to the external SD with CM10. So I don't know what you mean by easier on rooted stock.

I meant to external SD. I tried the moving to SD options on both titanium pro and within the is and it doesn't do it despite saying that it does. I am stuck on the 2gb partition that cm gives me.

How do you know it does not do it? Mine does. I used the settings/app to do it. They are no longer in /data/app they are in /mnt/asec which is the new way of storing on SD.
And 2GB is not enough? You must have a lot of very large apps.

I'd go for rooting the stock. CM10 works great but its reader lacks the funtion of Nook's original. I read a lot of PDF textbooks and there's just no good PDF reader, yes, szpdf included that can render as fast and stably as Nook's, not to mention the built in dictionary function.
In my experience, the stock PDF reader falls way short in zooming department. If you use ezPDF, you can double tap the text and it zooms the text perfectly cutting off the margins. Stock does something random altogether. That is a small problem though. Bigger problem is that you have to repeat zooming on each page. ezPDF remembers your zoom and then you can easily go through the rest of your PDF at the same zoom setting. This allows me to read a lot of my PDF's in portrait mode. If you use landscape then you don't really need zooming but it does come in handy.
And for my PDF's I have not noticed a speed difference between stock and ezPDF.
Also, I did not know there was a dictionary in the stock PDF reader app. I will have to try it sometime.
Stock
stock is better in my opinion. I just bought a Nook HD like a week ago and compared to other android devices, it seems faster. I got it rooted and everything and i started thinking about CM 10. I have CM 10.1 on my Samsung Fascinate, and I love the features but its always got a very low battery life and I also did not know how to unbrick a Nook. I read many comments about CM 10/10.1 for Nook HD and the battery life was an issue. So in conclusion I decided to stay on stock with root and GApps and all.
My wife has a Droid Incredible 4G LTE that is basically out of space because of the way it is partitioned by HTC. Rather than having 1 big partition, it has one partition labeled internal storage, one labeled phone storage and then the external SD Card. Unfortunately, apps can only be moved from from the tiny 1GB internal storage over to the still small (not sure of size) Phone Storage. Even though every app that can be moved over to Phone Storage is moved, big apps like Facebook always fail to update and say Insufficient Storage available. Although when I look in Settings, it does show over 100MB free for the Internal Storage. On my Galaxy Nexus, when I go to Settings->Storage, it just shows my 1 big 32GB partition and everything seems to use it and I have many more apps installed than my wife and never once had an app fail to update because of insufficient storage. Has HTC gotten away from the strange partitioning setup that the Incredible 4G LTE uses with the One and gone to one big unified partition?
The partitioning is part of ICS I believe. But as of now, I've got tons of big apps and I've never run into that issue. Apps according to the Storage settings is taking up 7.53GB, but that includes the big ass game files of 3 racing games, Batman and a few others that actually reside on the SD.

The programs also has to download, and then installed - so it takes more storage than one would think. I ran into this on my old Amaze that had been upgraded to ICS. The only solution is to remove files from internal storage. I'm assuming you have run the utilities to clean out the storage?

Thanks. That looks more like my Galaxy Nexus. The Incredible 4G shows how much space is available on the different partitions. It seems like the One allows all of your storage to be used for whatever you want.

Yes I have run the "make more space" utility. It usually will let me do that round of updates. But a couple days later its telling her insufficient storage again. Its quite annoying. Just glad to see the One doesn't have that issue. Once Verizon gets it I may upgrade to it.
So I have a stock, 4.1.2 Moto Atrix HD that has 8 GB of storage. With all of the music, apps, pictures, etc I have saved on here, it says there is about 500 MB of storage left in the storage settings menu. But, whenever I try to install a new app/ update an existing app, it says that there is "inefficient storage available". I'd have to delete some pictures/move them to Google Drive or remove some seldom used apps in order to download/update these apps.
Why is this happening if I have free storage available? Does the phone need 500 MB of free storage to properly function, is there any workaround?

I could, but I'm done with this phone in a few months and don't really feel like investing in a micro SD card. I mean, 500 megs is more than enough room for me to survive, I dont play a lot of big games on my phone or have apps that take up a lot of space. I do all of that stuff on my tablet.
And your next phone you don't plan on using a SD card either? They're not a lot to invest in man. You can get a 32gb for about 20 dollars.

well for my next phone, I plan on either getting the Moto X, HTC One, or the next Nexus phone, all of which don't (will not) have an SD card.
I understand that they aren't very expensive, but I was just asking about how to fix THIS problem. It just seems weird that even though there is 500 MB of space left, I can't install stuff.
i'm assuming your phone is not rooted as you stated to be on stock 4.1.2. have you tried freeing up say 75 or so MB by moving whatever to google drive like you said or a comp hard drive, if even temporarily, so you would have 600+mb free and then try to download/update an app? may aid in isolating the issue at least. also can try going into settings-->apps-->all apps-->google play store--> clear data/clear cache. reboot after just for good measure and then see if it will update/accept new app..
im having the same issue. right after i install a rom i only have 400mb of space left. i cant even install 1 app because it says storage is too low. i know something is taking up all my space but cant find what it is.

SD Card
Install a micro sd card you can usually get them fairly cheap and then get on the development section and find a post that says Switch internal to external or something like that and do what it says. It switches your sdcard extensions in the phone so that you can us your external as internal.
He doesn't want a SD card.

I am having this problem right now.
Thing is its a new install of the HOLO Blur rom.
My storage is reporting 3gb of space free but I cannot install anything new and its saying i need more space.
I cannot figure out what is going on - I tried clearing my cache but that did not help.
Any ideas?

I had same problem on different rom.
For me Lucky Patcher helped me.

OK, so I have no idea what happened. All of a sudden my space was used up. Which I thought was pretty strange. When I look in settings, I'm only using about half of what I have. However, the other half of my internal storage is just unavailable. My tablet knows how much space it has total, however adding up my used space does not yield a number matching my total space.
As long as everyone understands lol, can someone tell me how to fix this?

Try the app DiskUsage to see if what if anything is using up your storage.
Also try booting without a microSD in the tablet. I've seen it that a bad card caused this.
OK, so I downloaded disk usage. Apparently, 11 GB is taken up by Android. This seems strange to me.

Seems you used a different app. I meant the one by Ivan Volosyuk.
But if you have ES File Explorer or File Manager HD, they also can show you what's taking up storage down to the file level.
Either you have a lot of forgotten nandroids on there on some huge log files left over. Dig and drill down...
Ok, so I downloaded the one you meant. And this illustrates the problem to be system data. 11GB of it to be precise. What is in there for me to clear out? And where do I clear it from?

If not all the stuff in green is inaccessible to you. I'm running a debloated custom rom and my System section is about 9 GB. Your's is 12 GB (1 mib = 1050 kb roughly). Could well be that non-removable apps (aside from necessary system files) take up the difference. Nothing you can do about that without root.
But I see a pretty good chunk occupying media, especially your Android folder is pretty hefty. That is where your app data lives. The most interesting part is cut off in your screenshot. You got some game installed with a very large footprint in terms of cache. Check out the size of your Android/obb folder!!!! Mine is empty!
Swipe to the right in DiskUsage and check what's taking up the space. Pinch in/out to see details.

Yeah I have root. I am running CyanogenMod on my tablet as a matter of fact. Was a real pita getting there thanks to Asus but I managed with help from XDA.
As for the Android folder, I checked it out, and I am an idiot. GTA San Andreas, KOTOR, Bards Tale. That's 7.5 gb right there. I didn't realize there was so much extra after the fact with them.
