Q: Simultaneous Data and Voice on T-mobile HTC one - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HI everyone --- just picked up my phone tonight from tmobile. however, the data drops every time i'm on a call. no 2g, 3g, or 4g indicator after about 10 seconds of initiating a call.
just trying to figure out if i have a bad phone or if others are also noticing this issue.
any feedback is much appreciated. I may switch to At&t and get the optimus g pro if this is "feature" of the HTC one

If you're on EDGE it can only do one at a time not both.

I hear ya....but it's happening from 4g to zero; 3g to zero....the data connection (regardless if it's locked onto 4g or not), just drops after a few seconds of being on the call.....

what does everyone have their data settings set to? under mobile data > network mode.....
mine was originally set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto....
I changed it to GSM/WCDMA AUTO since tmobile doesnt' have LTE where I live to save battery......
but the problem persists with all settings, even when I select teh LTE....
any thoguhts?

Dial *#*#4636#*#* select phone info and see if it's set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE there as well.

I had that problem. Mine was set to CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto from factory. I did the above and set it to GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto and it fixed it for me.

where exactly is this setting? i entered *#*#4636#*#* and clicked on the three little dots in teh upper right hand corner....then i selected "select radio band".
A window popped up with "automatic" or "usa band". I selected "automatic".....but i don't see anywhere to select between GSM / LTE, etc. within this phone settings hidden menu..
help!
****Edit:***** never mind i found it however, mine was set by default to WCDMA......should I change it?

yes should be set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto or if you don't have LTE in your are just GSM/WCDMA auto.

got it....THANK YOU TO EVERYONE for their replies....changed it now...but still -105dBm to -93dBm at best......
what's funny is that my work provided tmobile blackberry sitting right next to my HTC one has awesome signal right now.....i don't get it.....although the blackberry is a 3g blackberry at best with no 4g capability.
also, i have noticed that if i switch the ONE to GSM only, the signal jumps to -71dbm.....!!! so apparently the "4g" sucks here in northern cincinnati....

4G have low coverage in all countrys, only usa have widely 4G.
If you got 4G that means you got better internet speed not stronger signal.
Signal depends on internal antena which dosent care if signal is 2g,3g,4g.

Simultaneous Voice and Data HTC One on T-Mobile
After dialing *#4636#*#* my HTC One on T-Mobile is set to WCDMA preferred as we do not have LTE coverage yet.
Voice and Data works superfluously under "4G" HSPA+ 21. I tested both while making incoming and outgoing calls.
I was told to change it to GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto when they put LTE live in my area.

Hi there erg208, I've tried all of those settings and still no success. Only for a very short time (data will stay on anywhere from 3 seconds into the call to no more than 10 mins into the call....last night was a record with 30 mins into the call) but the moment I begin to do to much surfing or send one too many emails or Gtalk for too long it's like my phone just gives up and the data disconnects and at no point during my phn call will it ever reconnect. I have to hang up my call and INSTANTLY the data turns on with all 5 bars and an H signal. AND most times I have to restart the phn before I can get simultaneous voice and data again. Do u have this issue? May I please ask if you've done an extensive test with your simultaneous voice and data? Meaning have u actually been on a long enough call and seriously surfed the web, sent & received multiple emails, chatted on Gtalk and sent an MMS all during one call and it stay connected? That would be a real test b/c mine doesn't. And if your data does disconnect do u have to hang up the call for it to come back on?? And does it work again if you make another phone call without having to restart your phone? No matter what, having to do either of those things is unacceptable b/c I have NEVER had to with any of my previous HTC devices on Tmobile's network. And I'm a flight attendant so I'm all over this country receiving 3G, 4G and LTE signals and it does it no matter where I am, if I'm moving in a car or sitting perfectly still in the same area with good coverage. Pls let me know your full experience in testing this. I really appreciate your help! Thanks

That is not true. We have decent LTE coverage here in UAE (inside the cities at least) and great 3G coverage even on highways.
I did have a similar issue that while on 4G data would drop if i receive a call but that's because 4G LTE does not support voice and my call gets "demoted" to GSM which does not support data+voice simultaneously.

WCDMA preferred vs GSM AUTO PRL

Had to hear it from the horses mouth, I called up HTC's tech support. I asked what was the difference between WCDMA preferred and GSM AUTO PRL. The gentleman I spoke to told me that they both have lots in common and that the only difference is that WCDMA preferred will favor 3G and GSM AUTO PRL will favor EDGE.
He continued to tell me that WCDMA preferred needs to reach a low threshold to go straight into 3g from edge. GSM AUTO PRL has a higher threshold, or higher standard has to be met (db of 3g signal) before it will go into 3G.
He mentioned that gsm auto prl will save the user a bit more power because it wont force the phone to continuasly hunt for a stronger signal. Typically this option gives our n1's a weaker signal and slower data speed. But he said it depends on our network in our city.
I also verified this information with t-mobiles tech support. They were a bit vague though. But they did mention that WCDA preferred will prefer 3g and that gsm auto prl is its complete opposite and will only prefer 3g if the signal is strong enough.
What do you guys think? Does this make sense?!?
Got this
WCDMA preferred - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 3G is favored more.
GSM only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
WCDMA only - The GSM phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM auto (PRL) - The GSM phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more. This one is a bit confusing to me since PRL is associated mostly with CDMA technology and not GSM technology.
CDMA auto (PRL) - The CDMA phone is capable of using both 2G and 3G data communication and when signal strength is low 2G is favored more.
CDMA only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 2G data communication. When the 2G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
EvDo only - The CDMA phone is capable of using only 3G data communication. When the 3G signal is too low you get nothing at all.
GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) - Some phones are equipped with both GSM and CDMA capabilities. This setting appears to just have the phone attempt to stay connected to the data communication type that works the best. (Maybe the Samsung Galaxy S will take advantage of this???)
Unknown - If none of the above fit or the phone is acting weird as far as connecting to the carrier, you will see your preferred network type is set to this
When using the 'only' options you should still be able to make calls.
To put things into perspective, The Nexus One is set to WCDMA preferred as default and the Droid Incredible is set to CDMA auto (PRL).

I guess from this we can conclude that we will get a stronger signal and faster data using wcdma preferred, if we live in an area with horrible service. Seems like the guys with excellent service wont be affected one way or the other.
right?
just conducted a test. I get no service inside of my sons school with my n1. i put my n1 on gsm auto prl and i left my sons n1 on wcdma preferred. we both walked in the school till we lost service. as soon as we walked out i was on full bars of edge. my son was on 1 bar of 3g. i wanted to repeat the test over and over again but my wife gave me "that" look. BTW my daughters moto cliq had full bars of 3g inside the school and outside the school.
kids are 8 and 10, they have never brought home a B. straight a's and always on the honor roll. they wanted android phones, my 10 year old chose the n1 and my daughter picked the cliq. wife has a bb till the mytouch slide is released! android family that roots together stays together lol
here is a really good explanation about the gsm auto (prl) setting from another forum. i'll quote and also link it.

WCDMA preferred has the phone try to find 3G directly. This takes more power until a connection is established.
You can verify this in the 4636 display, below the Run Ping Test button. You will see the Network Type say EDGE, then, after a bit, it will switch to HSPDA.
If your phone is near your computer speakers, you will hear edge chatter as it obtains its Preferred Roaming List. You may periodically hear a lot of EDGE chatter if you have nothing requiring a data channel running, because it might drop to edge and stay there for unexplained reasons.
Depending on your towers and service availability, you may see no difference in this at all. I live in a strong 3G area, and this does not help me at all. In fringe 3G areas or in 3G areas where there are a lot of 3G phones (cities, near schools, etc) this will help quite a bit.
In Edge only areas it saves a lot of battery by not searching for HSPDA when it does not exist.
Note: I also see something of a speed test hit on GSM (PRL), but this may be just the speed test app doing odd things.

Interesting, my Nexus S constantly drops the 3g connection (need to wait 15-30 seconds before it connects again), and I just realized its set to GSM/CDMA Auto PRL, will set it to WCDMA preferred and see.
You'll have to keep an eye on it, unless you change the build.prop, it will revert back to it's default setting.
How do I change this on my desire, the wcdma is terrible at my house so I always need to switch it manually or else if someone calls they can't hear me...
Would love it if I could get my phone to just switch to gsm when the wcdma sucks

That's how it behaves by default.
You can force GSM on by ticking the 2G networks only box in the network settings though.

Will this make GSM Auto (PRL) stick?
Should do, although mine seems to revert itself to WCDMA Preferred every so often anyway.
the PRL's of each of the phones should be different. They update those files constantly. It wouldn't be a fair and accurate test unless you knew for sure that you had the same PRL on two separate phones one that runs WCDMA and the other EDGE.
The PRL contains the RF information that your cell can access. When they update them they change the signals that your phone can and can't access so some signals are inhibited or blocked. There can be other modifications besides this like restricting speed or data.

I am in 3G.
I have no problems when putting my sim in my tp2. And talking while surfing.
And i am not the only one. No one has givein a reason as to why.
Uh..unless you changed you radio settings to "WCDMA only" you should be able to talk and surf.
It should work. I do it all the time, but it is network dependent.
In case it works on your TP2 i suggest you check your settings.
Hey big guy are you using a t-mobile nexus one on AT&T? Or AT&T N1 on T-mobile? That used to send all my calls to voicemail while I was on the intarwebs

Incorrect. "WCDMA only" is still UMTS/HSPA (3G/3.5G in consumer speak), therefore you still get voice/data at once. I can only conclude that you're under the assumption that UMTS/GSM work the same way EVDO/CDMA does. On an EVDO network, all data goes through the EVDO network, while voice stays on 1xCDMA, because EVDO is an addon to 1xCDMA.
UMTS and GSM are two completely incompatible technologies that only share GSM backend features and a SIM card. The circuits in the phone are separate, the antennas on the towers are separate. You're either completely on UMTS for voice and data (inc. both at the same time) or you're completely on GSM (for voice or data but not both at once. In fact, if you're locked on to a strong UMTS signal, the parts of your phone that handle GSM shut down for power conservation and only wake up when your signal drops to check to see if you'll get a superior signal over GSM. It will do this periodically, but won't stay active for long unless your UMTS is so bad that you won't be able to hold a call. THEN your phone powers up and maintains the GSM radio, while putting the UMTS radio on standby, only powering it up momentarily to look for a better signal.
The only time you have GSM and WCDMA/UMTS powered on at the same time is during hand-offs from one network to the other. That's why staying in areas where you bounce between the two kills your battery so quickly, the radio is drawing roughly twice as much juice as it normally does, plus it's computing which one will do the better job for the moment. Even then, at that time, the phone and its OS will be using only one of the networks at a time, and if it's UMTS, you'll be able to hold a call and surf the web.

I have this on every rom or radio i try.
Hey, sort of same thing just happened to me
in my case using GSM Auto (prl) or WCDMA prefered I can connect to HSDPA but GSM is in emergency calls only, weird.
but I can do both on GSM only (GPRS/EDGE)
Re-flashed to official release of 2.1 same thing.
i use voice and data on my nexus at the sme time every day. it just works. as long as you have a 3G symbol next to your reception bars, then it works.
i dont know what you could have done to break this. can you demonstrate to us what you are doing that is not "working"?

When you have bad reception, that's what happens. Normal and expected. During the call it won't re-negotiate 3G, only when the call ends.

Yeah, that is normal and it really sucks when you're on a long call. Once you lose 3G signal it's gone for good. I don't know if it's a network problem, or the phone, but it should be fixed.

Im in the same boat. Seems like 4g is HORRIBLE with this phone. Had the Note 2 and wife has GS4 both pick up 4g no problem, but the One picks up 4g for couple seconds then drops off completely. Yes, I tested this in the same areas.
really bummed out cuz I got the phone used so i can't return it. Love the phone, but its useless if i can't get 4g because Sprint's 3g is so slow its unusable.

I have been all through the service provisioning matching it to my friend that has one....and only found one difference. Seems my phone is only picking up CDMA-EVDO Rev-a instead of CDMA - eHRPD. When I change the prefered network from LTE/CDMA it will try to connect to eHRPD but then switches back to EVDO and no 4G. So I will try to call sprint and have them inspect my account as I have not seen a way in the service programming to force eHRPD. It would be nice to have the others that are having this issue check the Mobile network type as well and see what they are running.
Try not touching the phone and see that it holds 4G until you touch it...I know its pretty useless to not be able to touch your phone but this has been my experience.
In my experience, not touching the phone does not seem to fix the problem. I do notice a small signal loss if I have the left side of the phone against the palm of my hand. The real issue here seems to be related to the phone having some sort of broken threshold from when to switch to 3g to 4g and how much better the 3g signal has to be in order to decide to switch off of 4g to 3g.
I noticed that the LTE Scan Time is set way higher than what the EVO LTE is set to with latest firmware (300 on the HTC One vs 5 on the EVO LTE). I have not had much time to test changing this to see if it makes a real difference or not though. You can check what your LTE scan time is set to in ##3282#. You will need to get your MSL to change it if you want to do that (there is a method to get your MSL without rooting here on XDA).
Another thing you can try to see if it is indeed a reception problem or a problem with the phone not switching between 3G and 4G smartly is to set the phone to LTE / CDMA(1xRTT) only. You can do this in *#*#4636#*#* under the phone information submenu. Tap where it says "CDMA + LTE/EvDo auto" and change it to "LTE, CDMA" or even "LTE only".

Issue resolved for me! After 6 phone exchanges I was able to uncover what was causing the phone to not get on eHRPD which is Sprints upgraded software on the towers. I called sprint support and made them verify my UICC ID under about/phone identity, this also is the same as number as the SIM id. They did not match what was on my account. I went back to Best Buy and they called activation's and they sent a profile update with the correct SIM and UICC ID and it solved the issue. No more 104 data issues and I can get 4G now. WOO HOO!
I do want to say that Sprint really went to bat for me to get this resolved. I have to say thanks to the San Diego Sprint rep who kept in touch with me through out all of this.....Thank you man!!!

I had the exact same problem. My phone will not connect to 4G LTE. I have a few questions. How do I know the UICC ID, SIM? Where do I find them under my account?
Thanks a lot

You have to call sprint customer care to have them verify what you have on your phone. I recommend calling from some other phone when you call though. Just explain that you are having issues with your data and you heard that sometimes the UUIC ID/SIM ID are incorrect. They might come back and tell you, "well thats for international only" but in fact the SIM ID is used for LTE from what I found out. Just insist (nicely) that you just want to try it.
On the phone you can see your SIM ID under settings/about/Phone Identity.
One way to see if this fixes the issue is look under settings/about/Network and look under Mobil Network Type. If it is always running in EvDo rev A. then you have the issue if the towers in your area have Network Vision updated towers.
Hope this helps...PM me if you want more information. I can also get you tower data in your area if you would like.
slayer69, Thank you so much for your quick response. My phone runs with EHRPD when it showed 3G, not rev. A. However, my phone had the same issue, not connecting to 4G/LTE. From time to time, it will show 4G signal on the bar. However, when I tried to use it, it will switch back to 3G. I will call sprint to verify if tI have the sim card issue.
---------- Post added at 08:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:24 PM ----------
I talked with Sprint. It seemed that my SIM/UICC code is matched with the system. So my problem is still not resolved. I used an app to check the signal information, which showed that I have -70dB LTE signal. However, I just can't connect to LTE.
It seems that it is not only me. Check this link

Thanks to all in this thread. I had the same problem while in Oakland. My wife has an S2 on sprint and she had a strong 4g connection and mine was stuck on 3g. Now if this is a hardware issue that this phone has what if anything can we do. Can we exchange for a different device

[Q] HTC One signal drops

Hi all,
I have bought a Htc One M7 handset recently and I have noticed time to time there are No Signals (Limited Service) on it. When I switch off/ switch on or if I turn on the Airplane mode and turn off again, the signals will restore. This is happening around 2 times per day and really annoying. Need to know whether this is a known issue for the model.. I still didn't change the SIM and check. Please help!!!!!
Thanks alot!

I have the same thing
To add some detail for diagnostics see below:
- I travel into London every day and sometimes when signal drops in the tunnels it will never pick back up again after leaving them whereas my old One X did not have this on the same journeys.
- It even dropped out mid call and came up with the sim card icon at the notification bar as if no card inserted (but no selectable notification) first time its happened to this extent.
- Do you have a 4G SIM/connection or are you on 3G like myself? I'm thinking perhaps its something to do with trying to pick up 4G instead and completely disregarding the 3G connection that is available.
- I have also noticed that ever since getting the handset its never had as good signal as my One X which was pretty much always full signal in my normal areas (home, work etc) This may just be the way the handset gauges the signal not the signal itself but something to note anyway.
I'm having the same issue here in the US. It's prolly my only complaint with my phone.

I'm also having this issue but more sever with an all-day no signal. After reboot, I gain signal and I can't make and receive calls.
Try to turn 4G off.

How does one do that? Having the same problem, both wifi AND mobile network drop off. Wifi comes back on its own after a few seconds, the mobile data connection often comes back (obviously if not on wifi away from home), but the mobile network stays as no signal and doesn't come back, unless I reboot or cycle aeroplane mode. I know there's some problems with touching antenna, but this is happening a lot in the car, when the phone is powered and sitting in a cradle.

To turn off 4G you go to Settings -> Mobile data -> Network mode and then select "3G / 2G"
don't know if it'll help though, but trying is worthwhile

Thanks. The problems seems to have gone with that change. Perhaps it is some system thing kicking me off the network because I don't have 4G on my contract and my phone was trying to get it.
Now, if you can just tell me why my lovely 3-4 bar indoors signal on EE has dropped to 0-1 outdoors (as they deny there is a problem)

Are you sure it's not just cosmetic? Try going into Settings->About->Network and see if the signal (dBm) is dropping.

I have it constantly on att - I have to turn on airplane mode and turn it back off to get my network back, I have tried different roms and updates and still the issue is across all roms.
Maybe try this: in your dialer type *#*#4636#*#*. Once the menu is opened, select Phone information, then scroll down to Set preffered network type and choose one of the options (im from Serbia, europe, and I usualy go with GSM auto (PRL)).
Issue with 3g only
Whenever I keep it on 3G, it drops signals for 2 to 7 seconds at random intervals. People often complain that when they call, they get a message that my phone is switched off.. I am probably gonna try another ROM and SIM to see if that helps before dumping this phone forever.
how to solve limited service or loosing service on htc one m7
Hello
it seems to be a hardware fault where the radio is not staying on higher band
it seems to be having issues on 2100 and all umts and hspda or lte networks
however switching back to 2 g can resolve this issue and phone ( hope so) will never lose signals or drop then again
i tried this and for me this works fine so far over 12 hours now no issue
give it a try and see this should work
setting>data>network>2g only
by this you wont have option to use fast internet though but at least you can phone can be used for voice calls messaging etc and also wifi too
I was on stock lolli pop and tried to flash cm12.1 but does not help sort the limited service issue
enjoy and leave your feedback
Edit:
some people cant find 2g in settins>mobile network>preferred network type> lte or 3g only, the solution is go to *#*#4636#*#* phone info>set preferred network type>gsm only( this will put your device into 2g mode)
hope this work

[Q] Nexus 6 4G Issues

I am having issues with the 4G on my Nexus 6.
I live in the UK and I am about 150 Yards from my nearest Tower. I am well within a 4G coverage area but I get no 4G connection.
I am using the Carrier Giffgaff a subsection on the O2 network.
I have a 4G sim with a 4G package so I know I should be recieving 4G. I am waiting for my carrier to get back to me on my issues.
I was just wondering if anyone could suggest anything that may help.
I have rebooted my phone multiple times.
I have cycled Data on / off multiple times
I have cycled through Airplane mode.
I've switched the network to 3G only and back again.
In phone dialer do this: *#*#4636#*#*
Then choose what you want to connect with.
what is 4G? what kind of signal are you talking about? both hspa+ and lte are considered "4G". 4G is just a term that data providers use, its not a real signal.

if you dial *#*#4636#*#*, then press phone info, you can set your radio as lte only. after setting lte only(you wont get phone calls on lte only btw. it needs to be set to lte/gsm or lte/cdma/gsm to get calls as well). if you get no signal on lte only, then you either dont have lte in your area, or you need to talk to your provider.

Thanks for the help, no such luck LTE only gives me no service at all. I'm definitely in a 4G area. Will have to wait for my providers response.

No such luck im afraid. But according to my provider pages there's a small percentage of customers 1 in 1000 with the inability to connect to 4g even when fully set up and standing directly next to the mast. Seems to be an ongoing issue for the last month. Maybe I fall in that category just need to wait till they respond.

Are you with o2 by any chance? I'm having the exact same problem. I'm in the UK as well and haven't been able to get LTE/4G at all since I put the sim in my Nexus 6. Could get LTE almost everywhere with my Note 4.
Ask your provider to give you a replacement sim or at least go and try one in a store that is in a 4G area. This will if nothing else rule that out.
