Hey everyone, love the phone first of all. My problem? Sprint. I used to have sprint, but ended up going to tmobile with the nexus 4. When I decided to get HTC one, it was either pray for online store to have one available and pay $99 + $90 a month, or get one at a local sprint store and pay $50 for service (sero). Ended up transferring to sprint.
Right now, I'm in dc, and I really have pretty deeply data speeds, even on lte it gets maybe 3mbps... Granted, I know that dc market isn't live yet, but still. At the gym I go to, if I'm on lte it works good, but even with full bars it decides to drop down to 3g often, Shi h results in me not even being able to stream a thing... Never those issues on T-Mobile, reason I wanted new phone was to odd issues on nexus 4 and I wasn't sure if it was phone related, or network. A lot of people seemed to have similar problems on nexus though. It'd end up dropping all service, or just poor reception in general. I've heard that tmo variant of the HTC had much better antenna...
Now, I will be moving to Atlanta in 20 days, I know that T-Mobile is pretty good there. I know that sprint used to be terrible there, but how is it now? The lte there is supposed to be at 70% deploymenet, but I'm guessing that's just the downtown area, I'll be living in buckhead. Anybody out in that area that could comment on speeds?
Financially, makes more sense to stick to sprint. $99 for phone + $50 a month vs $99 phone + $90 a month.

If you want information on where you can find LTE, check www.sensorly.com or get their app from the Google Play Store. That's going to tell you where the LTE is where you're going.

If you're so concerned, go to Atlanta and test it. You can also check the thread in this particular forum where users are posting screenshots of their speedtests as well as general locations.
My friend had an Evo and moved to Atlanta. Fast forward to now, he switched to Verizon lol.
ps I will gladly take your HTC One off of your hands
I will say this, I live in atlanta and I get lte everywhere including all surrounding counties and cities outside the perimeter. If you are really moving to atlanta you should definitely stay with sprint, things have improved exponentially over the last year or so. Early last year I was this close to switching to at&t and decided to give sprint one more damn year and it turned out to be a pretty good decision. Now sprint might still be garbage in other places but in atlanta its pretty damn good.

For the most part I would say that I average about 15megs down with very low pings. Of course its not perfect, at times you will have those moments when you hit 30+megs and other times you will have those moments where you can barely hit 5megs but that doesn't happen very often at all.

Well a few of my friends have tmobile service and for the most part hspa+ is pretty fast as well but ping times are no where near what you can get compared to lte. There aren't many places where I would actually recommend sprint service but atlanta is definitely one of those places where I would recommend sprint.
also if you're looking to keep tabs on the LTE network for sprint, i'd recommend S4gru, its a blog as well you can follow peoples comments and check out what areas are spotting LTE. Just a warning it gets quite addictive i check like once a day for orlando lol

Haha yea, that's partially why I decided to give it a shot, the fact that s4guru listed Atlanta at such high completion. I just don't know, I like the idea of what sprint is doing, they should have very good lte coverage and good building penetration in the future. Although, sadly, a lot of what sprint said over the past few years sounded great on paper, yet, failed in reality.

I currently have Tmobile and planning on making a switch to a different carrier tomorrow. Needs a carrier that offers me better reception and Verizon/At&t are the only two carriers that can do that for me. I looked @ pricing and their both very similar give or take $15 which isn't a big deal to me.
At&t
Pro: At&t uses sim card so you can use it internationally
Can: More dropped calls
Verizon
Pro: Best coverage IMO
Con: IDK if this is true but can you surf and talk at the same time with Verizon smartphones?
Any other info and personal experience would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

If you're on wifi or (I believe) 4G, you can surf the web and talk at the same time on VZW. If you're just on 3G, you're SOL. But I've never really needed that functionality though.

Not true. Went into at&t the other day because my battery went bad. I don't even have warranty. Ten minutes later, I walked out with a new battery.
My vote is for at&t. Left Verizon for them and couldn't be happier. Better customer service and cheaper. And faster (3g) speeds. As for the service I cannot remember the last time I dropped a call. Verizon does have the best coverage though. And with they're lte network, they have the fastest 4g in America

Yes, that's one of the bonuses about AT&T, although I would rarely need that functionality.

Since price is not an issue, I would definitely go for Verizon since they have better reception and LTE. I currently have ATT and I do get dropped calls from time to time. Also, I only get 2.5 down max even on HSDPA.
A lot of it varies on your area for service, reliability, etc. The Thunderbolt is the only Verizon phone that can do talk/web at the same time (on 4G).
Otherwise it's the age old question, that everyone has an opinion on. Personally I prefer Verizon in my area, they have better coverage and less dropped calls than I experienced with AT&T, and much better customer support when I've called in, plus there's a Verizon store down the road from me, and the guys in there are awesome.
Your mileage, may vary...
I have had AT&T in one form or another since the 90s. Great service in my Area and great customer service. I also use the surf and talk feature all the time. If a customer needs some thing and I am not at my desk I just put them on voice and look up what I need and even order it while on the same call.
The Wife left Verizon years ago. Never had the coverage in our area I had at the time. Especialy on the coast line. That was many years ago and I am sure they are better now
Good luck with either choice!
At&t for me for sure

I'm not gonna ruin the Nexus 5, by putting it on Sprints network. Hello T-Mobile!
I work at Sprint and I play with all the new devices when they launch. First impression of the Nexus was it felt cheap. And the fact that it's made by LG this time just backs up the why the quality somewhat trash. The obnoxious circle phone speaker in the front was hideous. I thought it was a front facing speaker like HTC's One but it was an in call speaker. It looked like a knock off of all the phones that are out.
I did enjoy playing with the camera. A lot of new stuff that I want sure how to use yet but first impression was that the camera would be 1 of the key selling points for the phone. I had mixed feelings about the gigantic app icons but like I said it was my first impression so they could grow on me.
The feel of the phone in terms of performance wasn't bad. My GS4 is smoother with scrolling but I am stock rooted with stock kernel and debloated so Im pretty sure once this phone is too then it will be smooth as well. I did like how apps would open very quickly. Not much faster than my GS4 but was noticeable.
Honestly the phones performance isn't something to debate about because it is very resposnsive. And the Google Now feature is dope as well, but the feel and look of the phone just felt cheap like it was made from recycled parts or something. Just my 2 cents. The phone is a decent LG quality phone. If you like LG then go for it.

TMobile has 3G HSPA + which isn't actually any form of 4G but they advertise it as that. Your LTE capable phone isn't even on a real 4G or 4G LTE network.

So I had been toying with the idea of going from S4 -> N5, and went to the sprint store to play with N5. It does feel snappy. Just like when I install a fresh new rom on S4. Though Google Now fc on me on the N5.
Next I loaded up the same web page on both devices and noted that the page pan was not that significantly different.
Not convinced quite yet, but I may change my mind later. Still waiting for the ipad air to arrive which would keep me entertained for a while.

T-Mobile absolutely has LTE. And theirs is at least 20 times faster than Sprint's LTE here. I'm on Sprint LTE at home, and I just got 124 kbps down and 300 up. That's actually pretty good for their LTE! And it's been launched here for a few months. I guess that's what you get when you launch LTE handsets before you even have an LTE network to use them on anywhere in the nation. Once it's turned on, there are thousands of handsets sucking down the bandwidth as soon as it's turned on. Would probably help if they weren't running each tower off of one single Comcast cable modem...
Obviously that last part isn't true. but they shouldn't be selling or having LTE service here, if 124 kbps is there idea of LTE.

Than LTE hasn't been officially riled out yet in your area.it well get better. I typically get between 15-30mbs down and 10-15mbs up on Sprint LTE and my area is only 75 percent rolled out. When I first started getting LTE in my area I would only get 1-2mbs down. Hang in there and it will get better. Also, all carriers sell their LTE phones before the network is built out.

Yeah I hear you. I got sold on it today at work. One of my guys has been with T-Mobile for years I did a speed test and you see the results. He did it with his Samsung note 3 and got 29 mbps download and close to the same on upload. Frigging amazing. It's faster then my Wi-Fi on comcast at home. Time to make a move. Sad thing is I've been with sprint since 2000. Gonna be weird.

I have been with Sprint over 10 years now. I don't know how much more I can take either. The network is so unstable in my area. Constant dropped calls, 3G is to the point where even at full signal I have to do toggle airplane mode for it to kinda work sometimes. 4G signal strength is a joke. Tri band is coming very soon but I'm just so so so tired of waiting.
You think your speeds are bad?
Sent from my One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Here are results from my newly upgraded Network Vision Tower not even a mile away from me just down the road.
Sprint 3G with "great signal".
Verizon 3G will usually run faster than 4G Sprint LTE. Even though I'm very close to the tower, it constantly cuts in and out. The speed sucks.
Thank god for Comcast. I know a lot of people hate them but I am very happy with my connection except for netflix congestion which should be fixed soon. I usually am above my rated speed even at peek times.
My tower is absolutely pathetic. They aren't all done but my tower has been borked since July of 2013. Now 3G pretty much doesn't work at all.
The only thing that is nice is I now have an HD Voice tower which does sound awesome when it works when talking to someone else with Sprint on an upgraded tower. That's if it can actually hold a call.
Dan Hesse is still promising a Super 4G network to rival the competition when he did a recent interview on Mad Money seen here.
The build out is taking way too long. I know a new network is not built overnight but it's absolutely awful. It's so bad my local news did a story on it cause so many viewers were calling in wanting them to do a story.
I'm still holding out for Tri-Band is the only hope left, but I just don't know how much more I can take.
At least your guys 3G "works" if you want to call those speeds "working"
I have the same results in maplewod, voice in my house is terrible always getting dropped. I manage to get pretty good 4g in bloomington, but I am not in bloomington that often. perhaps if sprint actually buys t-mobile that will help things along.

A lot of the towers around here are just borked. What I have been reading it's the hand off between new equipment to older legacy equipment. So eventually it should all be replaced but yea pretty much anywhere in the metro it sucks big time. Most of our towers should be getting 800 MHz & 2.5 GHz LTE in the coming months. I will be upgrading to the next HTC in tri-band flavor. We *should* see awesome speeds on the 2.5 GHz band since we were in a wimax market. We will see how the handoffs go between the 3 frequencies. I'm expecting dumped signals & dropped connection but it's suppose to be seamless.
The fastest I got out of Sprint
Here's what I'm looking at
And that's after most of the university students went home for spring break. Usually at 4 AM the speeds skyrocket though I've hit the max that our 3G supports (I probably have insomnia)

I don't have any problems for the most part in the north east. Almost always 4g (LTE) and only occasionally does it drop to 3g while driving on highways.
I can stream netflix while driving and it only occasionally has to buffer.
Today I posted this on G+:
https://plus.google.com/104522596589171041648/posts/JfBDxdTAjSR
I'd be willing to place down a wager that the +Verizon Wireless and +AT&T variants of the Galaxy S5 will have the download booster feature disabled.
I can't imagine those companies taking very kindly to the idea of using WiFi and LTE simultaneously, just due to the fear of pissed off customers going over their data plans because they had no idea what they were doing. Plus it has the real potential to create even more usage on their networks, which most bigger carriers don't seem to like.
Considering how providers like to push people to use WiFi whenever possible (doesn't ever carrier have a WiFi finder app these days?), yeah, I don't see the big boys taking too kindly to the download booster. I guess we'll find out in a little under 2 weeks.
If my hunch is correct, I'd highly suggest that anyone owning affected variants scream and complain to anyone who will listen. This will hopefully lead to the guilty carriers releasing statements saying "The exclusion of the download booster functionality was an oversight and not intentional. We will fix this issue in a future software update."
Any thoughts?
It better not be. But yes, I can see them doing that. I say, it's my data, let me use it anyway I want to.
---------- Post added at 01:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:06 PM ----------
Well AT&T's sure doesn't mention download booster anywhere on the S5 page. I swear to God if they disabled it I will raise hell. Such a great feature too.
But these larger carriers have to much control. They really shouldn't be able to touch any device or modify it. Only Samsung should do that. If T-Mobile didn't have such spotty coverage by me, I'd be on them in a second ordering my S5 instead of ATT.
Ordering the non carrier version of the S5 isn't an option either because it so conveniently doesn't support bands 4 and 17. WOW
That's because the unlocked international version isn't intended for the US market. It's intended to be sold at retail in other countries and the LTE bands that it suppers reflects that.
Sent from my C6806_GPe using Tapatalk
I don't see why they would do this. If a customer goes over their data usage, that's more money in the carrier's pocket. Playing ignorance isn't an excuse for going over your limit. I don't see why a carrier would hand-hold customers on this issue. Not only that, but I don't see Samsung allowing them to do this, considering this is a pretty major selling point for the S5.
I could be wrong but i would imagine there is a setting you can disable to prevent yourself from constantly using both. So it should be in the purchasers hands hence no reason for AT&T to disable it to prevent data overages. That being said, AT&T is a company that likes to piss everyone off and remove features that are major selling points just because they can.

I can definitely see them doing this. Let me tell you why. AT&T is the only carrier that has brainwashed people in thinking WIFI is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I've often had AT&T reps tell me, ya know you really should use WIFI instead of your data. I was like why do I pay for it then? I still have the original AT&T $30 unlimited data plan for smartphones so I don't care, but even with that, they try to tell me to use wifi. I believe its because they don't want the same disaster to happen to their network that happened back in 2009. The network overloaded with all the iPhones. Nowadays, the network is amazing and has no problem with capacity. But I think they instilled it into all their rep's heads to make people use WIFI all the time. I have passed an AT&T store while driving and my phone connects to their crappy WIFI. I even argued with one rep a while back that my mobile internet connection is more stable than their crappy in-store WIFI network.
So yea thats my two cents. I really hope they don't eliminate this awesome feature. I pre-ordered the device on AT&T and will be the first one to post if they did or not when I get it April 8

I preordered an AT&T GS5 as well. I don't think it will replace my Z Ultra GPE as a daily driver, but I'm definitely going to have fun with it.

That's because the unlocked international version isn't intended for the US market. It's intended to be sold at retail in other countries and the LTE bands that it suppers reflects that.

Yea I know. Part of me just wishes there was only 1 GS5 that was a world phone that supported every kind of LTE network.
I did use the International Galaxy S3 years ago on AT&T and it worked great. No bloat, fast updates, and a black dialer. I may sound contradicting here, but now may actually be a great time to buy an HSPA+ only device. The HSPA+ network works great and isn't congested anymore. I occasionally test it out on my iPhone 5S since you can turn LTE off. I always get about 7-10mbps down. Even during calls speeds are now great. But when your getting 50mbps on LTE going back to H+ kinda hurts lol.
I ordered the white GS5. Never owned a white galaxy before. Cant wait to get it.

I ordered a white one too. The GS4 GPE only comes in white so I'm used to white Galaxy devices now. haha

This feature is a key selling point in Samsung's walk through of the phone, so I'd say it won't be blocked. My thought was actually that I will never use this feature unless it's an emergency" (I. e. need new rom ASAP) or I have a lot of data left for the month. Otherwise, AT&T could be making some nice dough off of people going over their data limits.

I am hoping that there is a way to disable it, as I really don't need it.
As it turns out, I changed my mind.. Cancelled my order and ordered HTC One M8
http://techknowzone.com/how-to-use-download-booster-in-samsung-galaxy-s5/
According to that article, not only can you disable it, but it actually doesnt impact normal web browsing or downloading small files. All the more reason AT&T has no excuse to disable it. For the average consumer, you wont got over your data simply because its on. If you arent downloading files over 30mb, it does nothing.
I'm sure the feature isn't there on the store models. Maybe because no sim card or active data connection

Sure enough went to the AT&T store today and chgecked the s5 that has a sim card in it and couldn't find the download booster.
Super predictable move.

Your local AT&T store has a GS5 out on the floor? That doesn't sound right.

Wow... Well hopefully the floor model isn't running final software and there will be an OTA before launch. I'm not going to freak out just yet.

If they disabled that feature then I think its time we start retaliating. I probably will send my pre-order back and go with the International version. The LTE networks are getting bogged down nowadays, while the HSPA+ network is doing great.

I'm going to head over to the biggest corporate store in the area tonight and see if they have a GS5 on the floor. If so, I'll try to verify it. If it's true, you can bet your ass I'm canceling my preorder.

Just wanted to say my farewells to the Sprint forum. I've been a loyal Sprint customer for 12 years but I just couldn't take the waiting anymore. My area still doesnt have LTE fully deployed and the speeds weren't that fast in the areas where it was. I had the M7 with Sprint and loved it whenever it was connected to WiFi! With Spark being 1-2 years away from my area I just couldn't wait for Sprint any longer. Got the M8 and jumped over to T-Mobile and now i'm living in the fast lane! Now granted one of these test was in the middle of the night I still average 30-50Mbps during the day!! Sprints LTE would barely crack 7-8Mbps!! Love the device!!

Besides speed...What I love about Sprint is the low ping times!
I'm always in the 30-40ms pings where I live

Well, development for this carrier for this phone is minimal.
Look at the other carriers development threads. Sprint is dying off, and it's a sad thing to see.
Verizon rules SC. Sprint all but abandoned this state when it came to service, and now everyone I know is on Verizon.
Not sure how long I'm going to stay on. Verizon has the best service by far here.

I rarely ever use data anyway. I'm on Wi-Fi no matter where I go. There is nothing so dang important I can't wait to read about it on my HTPC in my living room.
Data is basically for emergencies.

Kind of an unfair thing to say about the development for this phone. There are several projects being worked on and your going to see a lot more to come. The phone is still really new and everything doesn't drop at once.

I believe it to be quite fair.
The phone is getting tons of development, just not on Sprint. However, it is new, and many may still be enjoying their EVO's and M7's, or can't upgrade yet, but with the dropping of the S5, it's even more difficult.
In no way an I knocking our dev's either. That almost seems to be the implication. I'm merely saying that Sprint is lagging behind the other carriers, especially if you take into account the General thread, which has nothing for us.
The quick smirky answer is, "learn to dev then", but I don't have the knowledge, so I donate when I can, to support.
Again, the point is, Sprint is losing in a lot of ways, and the OP has the main reason why.
Sprint has been lax with their customers.
Well op I can't really blame you for leaving. Only reason I haven't left I'm on Sero plan and I know what Sprints intentions are however it seems like nothing ever gets done. My home tower has been borked for almost a year since last July. Spark looks very promising but I am also very tired of waiting. I am gonna wait it out especially since Softbank is now backing Sprint they have deep pockets. Coming up on 2015 and pulling struggling to pull 0.5 megabits is pathetic. I'm gonna hold out for it but yea it's tough.
For one Sprint has the lowest number of subscribers than ATT and VZ so that's kinda expected naturally.... But looking at the other carrier specific development sections sprints isn't lagging much behind if at all..... The main M8 section is a different beast though as that has a bunch of world carriers basically lumped in one and always has more activity compared to the US carrier section...
Of note things like kernels and such will work cross carriers... Often when an item is compatible same file across all versions it's placed only in the main M8 section as dev would only have to maintain and watch 1 thread then....

LOL no, I can get those numbers at any spot in LA where reception is strong. I think at spots where I get those numbers the RSRP can get in the -60 dBm range.

im with ya OP...This phone was too good to not use properly on Sprint for me too.I took a look at my average data usage per month on Sprint and headed on down to AT&T for 2 phones at $130/month for a 10 gig family shared plan, more than enough for us as we never passed 7.5GB over 12 years..I will come back to Sprint when their build out is complete and if they offer unlimited data still for new customers.
I'm starting to get to the same point. My 3g is atrocious, LTE is basically nonexistent, I constantly drop or miss calls. Could be the phone though. My wife's gs3 doesn't have these issues. Very frustrating.

Well it is your phone but not because its defective lol. Its a tri-band device (Spark enabled) so until Sprint launches Spark in your area the phone wont perform very well. Its a network issue and the only thing you can do at the moment is change the phone to CDMA only mode. It will block your LTE but atleast you will get all of your calls and 3G. It has to do with the tri-band phones not being able to to simultaneous voice and data...
Yea, I do realize that, I have it on cdma only. I'm not sure what happened earlier. I was on the phone and I dropped the call 5 times within 10 minutes.

Nice
To be honest there are only 2 reasons I'm still on Sprint.
1) Unlimited Data, as I go through about 30GB of data a month I NEED truly unlimited and unthrottled data.
2) Verizon tried to f' me over while I was in the Marines and for about a year they screwed my credit rating to hell. I faxed them a copy of my orders showing I was being sent to Japan and told them to put my account on hold. I paid my final Verizon bill and called to verify I didn't owe them anything else and that my phone would be placed on hold. About a year later I get a letter from their legal department demanding ~$500 for early termination and other fees and that it had been reported on my credit rating. So Verizon can go f' themselves, no matter what I'll never do business with them again.
