I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE THAT RESULTS FROM USING THIS TWEAK, RAISING THE THRESHOLDS OF BUILT IN SAFETY FEATURES MAY DAMAGE YOUR DEVICE
I saw a few people have tried to alter this file with no success, weird when its the same permissions as temp_throttle and temp_shutdown. Here is a working method to alter this value, to be entered in terminal:
su
cat /d/tegra_thermal/temp_throttle_skin > data/local/tmp/temp_throttle_skin
echo 50000 > data/local/tmp/temp_throttle_skin
cat /data/local/tmp/temp_throttle_skin > /d/tegra_thermal/temp_throttle_skin
Click to collapse
This tweak helps performance especially when charging, but be aware other parameters or kernel bugs can cause poor clock speeds and core use
Notes:
Do not use "echo 50000 /d/tegra_thermal/temp_throttle_skin" as a shortcut, this doesn't work.
I told the devs of tegra overclock about this, it's coming in the next release
If you are not sure if it worked just go to /d/tegra_thermal/temp_throttle_skin in es file explorer and open it as text, you will see it's current value
To set this at boot you will have to make an init.d script, otherwise you can open your terminal preferences and paste the command in "initial command", this way as soon as you open the terminal the commands will be executed automatically

ofc, just a note, you'll have to run this command every time you reboot, or make init.d script. thank you for this :good:
btw, just wanted to say, changing this value doesn't remove throttle for me. i still get throttled down at 40ish temperature of battery (on werewolf stock version, and yeah, the file reads 50000, or whatever the value i put in)

i've just tested iodak & werewolf, both throttle down at, what i presume, is around 40c battery temp. doesn't matter which governor i use.
stock rom, 20a, if it's of any use.

no problem, man.
i just can't understand what the problem is for me, and why it's not working. on PH85's kernel, i dont get throttled almost at all. his tegra_throttle_skin is set to 48000 on boot. iodak and werewolf are on 43000, and i get throttled almost as soon as i start using the phone for something that uses all four cores (it's quite noticable on benchmarks f.e., since it will often throttle during the test itself :/). i tried your method of echoing to temp file then echoing it back, tried root explorer text editor, and saving it. the file shows the change, but no change in the performance.

Well you verified it changed the value so theoretically it should work. Does the value stay the same when it throttles? Try leaving the terminal window open to force the value to stay

Another one its not working for!? Maybe I did something else, but I don't think so... Perhaps the problem for you guys is the throttling is caused by something else
Sent from my rooted P880
I must say I still occasionally get this throttling, but nowhere near as often. I think for this value to work all the time it has to be the kernel default. I find when I set it at boot it seems to work, but if I forget and it throttles, enabling it doesn't help. For those on CPU variant 2 and above use ph85, it has skin throttle @48 default. I am variant 0

I have setcpu installed on my Nexus One, along with the Zimage and lib files I need to overclock it. Can anyone tell me what an appropriate temperature range is for the Nexus, as would be shown in the SetCPU widget? I want to be sure I don't cause my Nexus to overheat.
Around 21-36 for me.. highest it ever got was 40.3 degrees.

Would it matter if I have a silicon case on it? And how high is dangerously high?
I have the same case, I wouldn't want it to go over 40C or bout 102 F. Thats pretty hot, I notice my phone gets sluggish and starts forceclosing too... What ROM are you running? And are you using OC-UV kernel? If not I suggest you get it.

At the time I had SetCPU and was overclocked, I had Cyanogen's latest stable ROM (5.0.5.3?) installed. I was using the UV kernel. Last night I switched to Alpha r20 of MoDaCo's desire ROM for Nexus along with whatever kernel that comes packaged with.
You should be able to flash the OC-UV kernel by pershoot over Modacos desire ROM.
Battery life means more than OCing to me so here's my SetCPU profile settings if it helps.
Default setting: 998/245
Charging: 844/245
Standby: 245/245
Power<35%: 883/245
Failsafe batt > 40: 729/245
I should add that I'm charging right now, music player on, using my phone non stop and my batt temp is 95F.

Sounds like a good profile, and I think I'll try that myself and see where my temperature lies with those settings. Just curious... what are the advantages of using the OC-UV without overclocking?
Here's information on the kernel with the ROM I'm using, directly copied from the page with the ROMs.
What kernel are you using? Any other tweaks worth knowing about?
The ROM has the usual MCR tweaks (tun.ko, openvpn, busybox, dropbear etc.) and is running a custom kernel by teknologist and myself based on the stock .33 source (check the changelog below for more details). Himem is enabled. The kernel runs at standard clock speeds, uniquely only using undervolt at the lowest clock speeds.
Good question, I had an option to just undervolt it, there is a UV @stock speed kernel by Persianone too, but I opt to get the OC-UV just incase I need to show off how fast my N1 is. LOL. Better to have the option to use it when i need it.

GPU = 400mhz (default = 300)

Clemsyn, thanks for your efforts. any chance of getting your Kernel for Adam CM7?
Well...
...what can I say. It´s freakin' fast! Very quick touch respons. 1500MHz does not seem to be a problem. I was not able to find the specific gorvenor you mention.
Only issue I´ve run into is the auto-rotate. When it rotate to portrait it won´t rotate back to landscape mode. Changing cpu freq. did not help. Actually it seems the sensor does not work, as it only rotate if an app forces it to change mode.
As for beer - alcohol is no good mate! Sorry.
I got a Quadrant score saying 3273, a number My adam has never reach before.
Everything is fast and has a quick and stable responsiveness and surfing the internet is a bless. I would love the HC to have these qualities, maybe you could join the team? Maybe you already are on the team
The 1.5GHz overclock is doing a nice job and there has been no issues.
Still an issue, the sensor to rotate screen.
Am I talking to myself?...
So PimpMyGtab is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895825

na, its alright. you wont lose extra battery because of it, if thats what you are worried about. many custom kernels include this as well, since there isnt any difference in battery loss.

Ive been using that firmware sins the day it released (a weak ago almost)? but no change there...
what i have done now is done some heavy modifications to the kernel and some CPU governors.
I flashed this Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/development/kernel-andropluskernel-t3392772
the kernel works like a dream after under-clocking it with this program: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grarak.kerneladiutor&hl=no
Used the "alucard" governor, CPU is sitting around 60 degrees when using the camera, and its a bit laggy, but much more survivable that it was before...
This Kernel is the best you can do, perhaps you can try to deactivate one or two of the big cores.

Anyway your lag is too much or just a little bit???
And one thing I use stamina mode whenever I'm about to do something CPUy
So try it without tweaks and tell me what's the result.

I get the stamina thing, id do that too if i did not need the screen brightness
The laggs are not small, im talking CPU om 80 degrees an so hot that i can not touch top backside of the phone
and thats withou any tweaks on MM .244 with everything stock. Ive also tried it with root, but really that does not make any differense, i need to edit the kernel to be able to use the camera, or else it will shut down when recording in 720p.
Anyways, underclocking the device for me, actualle made it faster in my case, i have no idea why makes no sense, but there is no throtteling and cpu struggles when underclocking it, so now it relly smooth, a lot smoother than on stock .244 MM,

I dont mind the heat as well, but it is throttling in my day to day use applications, that's what's bothering me?
Hello guys I got some huge problems here.
I recently switched from my Z2 to the Z3+ and actually like the phone but the overheating is insane and especially kills Pokemon Go through CPU throttling, which runs smoothly on my old Z2 .
So far I am on 253, cleaned it up and tried a self modified and the zach beta9 Kernel and and runs quite bad on both. Is heating a lesser issue of 224? I actually do not want to reflash the whole system to 224 just to find out it doesn't get better.
Also is there a way to undervolt/underclock? I can change settings in Kernel Aduitor but I have the feeling the phone doesn't really care.
Help much appreciated - thanks!
Try Zach beta 8 kernel. Limit max cpu frequency by kernel auditor.
Still it's only your Goodluck if your device cools down. It's a bitter truth about this model.

Try Zach beta 8 kernel. Limit max cpu frequency by kernel auditor.

Do you have a clue whether 224 or 256 make a difference?
I will try beta8 and report back.

no there was no thermal improvements between these builds, dont flash your system back
but do underclock and tell us the results!
Im also affected by your exact problem
Try this kernel, seems promising. I haven't tried it since it doesnt have twrp.

Edit: Today I have flashed 256, haven't found any improvement. As per my experience 256 haven't brought any noticable change.
**** posted twice and dont know how to delete
Thank you for the replies!
Tested zach beta8, didn't help. Now I am testing http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/orig-development/kernel-om5z-kernel-t3421630/ as suggested and if that doesn't help much also with http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/general/kill-overheating-flash-zip-t3421782.
And Stamina Mode helps at least a bit.
Statusreport: It always runs bad. But best at the moment with root patched Stock Kernel (253) and that underclocking zip. Although I think that underclocking doesn't really help at all.

What are your temps? When does it start to throttle? Done any thermal-conf configuration to allow more heat?
---------- Post added at 21:03 ---------- Previous post was at 20:58 ----------
I know that @Trilliard has a very good and stable cpu governor where he has disabled two of the little and two of the big cores, this helps a lot if you underclock the remaining 4
Here are his files:

UPDATE: Added my edited files used to apply CPU tweaks (cores down clocked to 0.9 and 1.2ghz, two core disabled, tweaked cpu governor, power and others mods) and these files located in etc folder. Replace them and set correct permissions then reboot.

Actually I didn't know about this combination - I will try it thanks!
Do you know about a thermal-conf? Actually never tried one. The phone gets hot indeed but I still think there might be some space before it actually melts.

Thats what i thought as well i have my own here, its based on another persos post, but i dont remember where...
Anyways, his camera mod worked, but cpu throttle was not tampered with, and it caused a very unbalanced throttling... Ok yay i can use the camera linger and fluently, but when i exit the camera app, i cant use the phone couse its runnig at 348 mhz...
So i i did some modifications to it cpu never get under 840 for little cores, so your phones menues end web browsing are always safe from performance drops.
I made it to be able to play Pokemon go, and achieved a lot better resault than without any changes.. still prefer playing on my shield tablet, but if i dont have it around when theres a lot od pokestops nearby, then this will work for me.
While playing Pokemon go it does not go over 80 degrees, but using snapshat it can get to 85, so dont use snap for to long
Let me know if it worked for you!

Oh nice! Thank you a lot! I will totally try it out directly when PTC comes back alive. X)
What kernel and governors do you use?

Im using stock kernel, may switch to another soon. Im using stock bcause of batterylife and idle power consumption
Im using the governor and cpu modifications in this post ; http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/general/dont-custom-kernels-want-to-avoid-idle-t3409647
Hmm. Still runs ****ty.
Can anyone give me a short guide how to edit thermal and governors?
According to my observations the phone gets hot and then cold. I think the throttle is more aggressive and needed and I want to make it less aggressive.
Update:
I made my own modifications to the thermal engine. It is pretty bad for battery I guess but I had a very good expierence playing Pokemon Go with it today. Yes the phone gets hot. Like it doesn't drop below 70°C while playing and regulary hits 80°C but it works good. No dark screen, no 0 CPUs downclocking. So far it's fine for me, maybe I get squeeze even more out of it.

Done any other modifications to your file for a while? Or is it working good for you now? What's your SoT?

Still working good for me. Not sure if I can really squeeze out more and as long as it works at the moment I do not have a good motivation to try anything else.
No idea about SoT. Always running around with a powerbank. Probably bad, it is not designed for good battery life.
