[Q] Weird Vodafone service issues - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so I have this weird issue and i hope you guys are able to help.
I live in the Netherlands, specifically in Emmen, Drenthe.
A few days ago i changed my network operator from T-Mobile to Vodafone.
I did this because I wasn't very happy with T-Mobile's network, they do reasonably well in the west parts of the Netherlands, but in the East part, not so much. Vodafone seemed a pretty decent alternative.
Now i came across a problem, I study at Stenden, which is in Emmen, and nowhere else but at Stenden (and Drenthe College, another school right next to it) I have no signal. It's not all the time, but pretty much 90% of the time there i'm getting no service.
I have an (almost) 3 jear old GS I-9000, with CM10.1 on it. Seeing as it's so specific, I was really doubting it was because I'm using a custom ROM, nothing like this happened with T-Mobile.
Regardless, I decided to go back to 2.3.6 stock just to be sure, and apparently that fixed it. I'm getting an Edge (E) mobile connection at the points at Stenden and DC, and i can call people normally again.
I find it strange that i'm actually getting an E network anyway, but to think my connection previously was thanks to CM10.1 just seems weird. Not to mention my Phone is once again as slow as Peter Griffin during KisStock
LONG Contextual story, Now my question is this: what's causing this loss of service that's ONLY at college, and am i limited to stock 2.3.6 or can i use another ROM?
Any additional info i need to add?
Edit: FYI, My IMEI should have been fine when i was still on CM10.1, so unless i missed something there, it shouldn't be because of that.

That would have been caused from your modem. Flashing CM10.1 changes your modem to XXJVU (I believe, its been a while since I've used CM10.1) regardless of where you are I think. Try flashing in a modem that's Netherlands specific and see if that fixes your problem.
I think there's a slight chance that its kernel related as well but that's not really likely at all.
So try either flash in a Netherlands specific modem or the same modem as the 2.3.6 version you're running.

Factory Reset, low signal issue? (Bell Vibrant - Rogers Network)

Um, hi.
Last night I purchased a new Galaxy S Vibrant from Bell. Of course the first thing I did was jump over here to XDA to do some required reading. I proceeded to unlock, root, and flash froyo. All was working fine, until I found an App on the ROM to do a factory reset. There was still a lot of bloatware on the phone so I figured that would be a good idea. After that, I've begun experiencing low signal issues in certain places. The phone can still connect to the Rogers Network, and I have the correct APN settings (I get 3G), but in many areas my phone loses signal. Before the data wipe I could make calls just fine out of my basement but now I don't get signal down there. Is there any way to fix it? I know this sounds pretty vague, however if you need any more information I'll be happy to provide it.
Cheers!
(By the way, I love this phone!)
A lot of people have complained about losing the 850mhz frequency when upgrading to froyo on the bell sgs, so if you can't get 3g then you just lose reception all together, there is a fix for it, I believe its in the android development section, search in there, I saw it in there yesterday, search 850mhz lost signal and it will come up for sure, there's a fix for it

Ah Alright. I've been reading around these forums a bit and I came across a few of those threads. I wasn't sure if that was my problem though, I'm still pretty new to the phone. Thanks for the help!
No problem, glad to help

From what I am reading, it doesn't look like there's a froyo fix :/
Does that mean I should downgrade back to eclair, at least until Bell releases official froyo? If that's true it's unfortunate
did you read the 850 sticky topic?
just go into the service menu
and play with the band selection options
that should get your 850 back

[Q] No WiFi, now no HSDPA

Somehow my WiFi has quit. I noticed it about a week ago. It will start when I turn it on, then scan for a few minutes, then just shut off.
A few days ago we had an update on KIES for the firmware, etc. Now I cannot get HSDPA signal.
I may have loaded something that shut everything off, don't ask me what, I really don't remember what or what order I loaded stuff.
I need a good back up app and some clear instructions on how to use it. I believe if I back up my apps and do a factory reset then it will be wiped clean and I can try again. After the reset, if WiFi doesn't come back then I headed to the Samsung Service center.
Thanks!
Thanks for the help, guys.
I took my Tab to the Samsung sstore and they did a hard reset and wiped everything off. They were sure it was one of my apps that was in conflict with the wifi settings. Now I have to reload all my apps one by one and see what happens.

Thank you for the invite, but being in a foreign country where I do not speak the language I cannot afford to take the chance of bricking my Tab or voiding the warranty. Should that happen I will be out of luck as, being a foreigner, the service personnel are not always so accommodating and they would likely tell me sorry, no can do.
Besides, I am quite happy with the stock software and firmware. I regularly check Kies for updates and they install with no problem. That way if anything goes wrong then it is in their update, not mine.
As it was, they said that the WiFi loss was probably a conflict in some app I had used. The HSDPA was explained as the same thing as 3G. Well, not hardly, but out here in the rural country area where I am it is possible that the HSDPA was never available and it was a glitch that showed it in the first place. I can't argue with them, so I just have to say ok and go on.

3G Internet Issue

I just saw that early today was added a Fastboot Package for Claro Argentina (Milestone 3 XT860) in this thread: [Fastboot Files] Gingerbread 2.3.5 and 2.3.6 for UMTS XT860 Milestone 3 (Can't link, sorry).
Here is my problem: two weeks ago I was able to access internet from my XT860 using 3G from my house, but since the 24th of December I'm not able to (2G - EDGE works good). I don't know why. If I move two blocks away from my house I have perfect reception and I can use 3G data without any problems. I already took the phone no customer's service and they gave it back to me with another blur version but still it doesn't work. I'm making almost daily calls to Claro but they don't do anything.
Currently I'm using: 2.3.4 with 5.1.790. Should I expect any change if I flash the new files?
Thank you for your help.
P.S: I don't live inside a Faraday cage

That sounds more like a problem with their network. I don't know why your device would selectivly not work just at your house. That's an odd software bug.

I don't know what's going on but it's weird for me too. Anyway I'm going to flash the new firmware with RSD. First time doing this with Android, any tips?

Make sure your battery is fully charged, recently another user borked his phone as it died during flashing. I have a thread called xt860, custom roms and you that has a full guide on fastboot flashing, rooting and custom roms

I think its with their network, or perhaps physical interference from something nearby. I can't think of why it would selectivly not work only at your house if it was a hardware/software issue it would be either all the time or totally random. Try mapping out the area where it cuts in/out and report it to your carrier.

I've already reported it. Several times. But they just answer "the computer shows that the antenna is working fine, you shouldn't have any troubles". I call every day to complain about it but they just don't do anything.

German Galaxy Note bought from Singapore, now has bad radio?

I bought my Note on EBay, received Jan 3rd. Jan 29th the radio started acting up. It goes from H+ to H, 3G, E then G, then "no service", or sometimes from E to no service, then back to H+, then over again. Weird thing is, if I'm streaming [email protected] 128kbs or HQ video, it has no trouble doing it, even for long periods of time, flawlessly. I'm not being throttled, replaced sim card, tried all the APN's I could find, with the same result. As far as I know, nothing changed from the time It worked fine, to when the trouble started. I factory reset it twice also. I know Samsung US can't/won't help me, I called to make sure. They couldn't even give me a number or email to Sammy UK.
Any one experience this, and fix it? Did a setting get screwed up? How would I get Warranty work done? Or am I just screwed. I did register at SammyUK, submitted a trouble ticket. Also contacted the eBay seller, but haven't heard back, and probably won't.
I spent $700 on this thing. Any help anyone can give would be much appreciated.

Hi there. I live in Finland and bought my Note from Amazon Germany. Not exactly the same situation but never faced the issues you mentioned.
Did you try to update your device? I really doubt if the problems are caused by APNs- To me it more or less sounds like a problem with radio of the phone. I assume you are not rooted? If you would be, you could try flashing some other modem as it might help.
AT&T is notorious for coming with innovative ways to hassle the customers with non AT&T branded smartphones on their networks too....just a thought.
flash a new firmware that belong to you country.
HERE
Thanks for the replys. The seller responded and said they will take care of it. Thank goodness!

[Q] Stock, unbranded, UK firmware

I have a I9305 purchased from Hong Kong which came loaded with HK firmware, whilst it would have worked, for various reasons I want to install UK firmware, specifically official/stock versions. (I have run custom ROMs on other handsets in the past, just going to stay official for a while with this one)
I don't want any carrier-specific stuff on there, nor so I want to be held back (in the future) waiting for carrier-specific upgrades etc.
I have a few, hopefully yes/no questions:
1. I've search and as far as I tell you there is no unbranded, UK, stock firmware available, is that correct? (guess this is because nobody's selling it unbranded in the UK yet)
2. Is the best thing to do to monitor sammobile and samsung-updates until I see what I want?
3. When I finally do get my hands on the firmware I'll flash it with Odin - will I automatically get subsequent updates via Kies/OTA?
I'm current running I9305XXALK3 for region DNF...which I thought might be international/country-agnostic but since the default language it offered me on first boot was Suomi I guess it's actually for Finland!
The phone works fine, but it's only Android 4.1.1 and obviously I'd like to get on 4.1.2, I suppose another country (e.g. Germany) but unbranded is ok...but not perfect
Apologies for the long, first, post, hope it's not too annoying...I'm just excited about retiring my Hero and enjoying this new beast!

Thanks for the response...but those are all EE branded, will that:
1. mean I have to wait for EE to approve future updates? (I'm thinking once we have unbranded/unlocked handsets in the UK they will receive upgrades first)
2. have any effect on the network e.g. performance, connectivity etc.? (I'm currently on 3, not EE/Orange)
Thanks for any additional info
No and there is no EE branding or bloatware just pure stock.

Seriously!? - OK, that's great news - thank you for your help
hmmmmm...
OK, I've installed the latest i.e.
PDA: XXBMA6
PHONE: XXBLL5
CSC: EVRBLL1
A couple of observations:
1. As others have noted, the mobile network modes are limited to just 2 (2G/3G/4G auto connect & 3G only) whereas the previous firmware I was using had 4.
2. With the previous firmware it seemed to hold an H+ connection much better, with this firmware it seems to drop back to 3G+ most of the time.
Any thoughts? It would seem that this firmware, despite being official, is more limited than some others.
I'm not overly concerned with #1 (although does 3G only really mean just 3G or will it also use GPRS if that's all it can find?) but #2 (and I realise I haven't done any structured testing!) does worry me - I want the fastest speeds I can get as often as I can!
My gut feeling is that EE's firmware might not be optimal for those who want to operate on non-4G networks. (what does the Vodafone or O2 firmware have?)
Does anyone know for sure what's different and why?
Over active imagination?
Have flashed 3 different firmwares today

^this I think is a mistake on my part, I've played around a bit more and it looks like (but could be my imagination of course!) that the phone jumps up to H+ on demand e.g. refreshing a web page causes it to switch up from 3G+ to H+ once the page is loaded it reverts to 3G+.
Am I going nuts?

What you are seeing is called fast dormancy. Its kind of a battery saving feature hence why H+ is not always on. Most networks support this nowadays.

Thanks for the education
@big-nose.
Can I ask, did you get the phone from Simply Electronics? Im currently waiting on mine arriving and since I ordered it have found out that their main warehouse is in HK, so I think I will be getting the same phone as you.
Im on Orange just now and when my contract is up will switch over to EE for the 4G, so will probably just flash the EE Firmware whenever the phone arrives.
Cheers

I got mine from Panamoz...but all the Hong Kong dealers probably obtain the phones via the same routes.
Have to say I'm impressed with Panamoz so far, ordered at 2130hrs on Sunday evening and delivered to me in the UK on Wednesday. The real test will be if I have to use the warranty...but obviously I'm hoping that day never comes anyway!
My only comments are:
1. Mine was packaged for the French market e.g. the mains charger is for French sockets, the instructions are in French etc. (Panamoz did put a free mains adaptor in the package to deal with the charger) Wonder if any other options besides French were available, would have been nice to know this up-front.
2. The initial screens were in Chinese and if you're not familiar with Android you might not know that the first thing it asks on initial boot is what language you want to work in...I think it'd be handy if Panamoz provided a piece of paper with brief instructions and a screenshot explaining how to switch the language, otherwise some people might panic!
Thanks for the feedback.
I have actually just cancelled my order. 2 Weeks after placing the order it still hadnt been dispatched, and I was wanting it for this weekend. I'll just pop down to the local Orange shop and buy it there, its only £50 dearer so i can handle that ok.
Still using my trusty S1 just now but looking forward to the upgrade.
Cheers
