[Q] Gap issues - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I decided to get HTC One, after giving it some serious thoughts. I heard/seen gap issues on HTC One on some of the batches(some really bad). Wondering if this is still an issue on current batch(3rd), because I want my phone damn near perfect. I may wait a month or so if this is still an issue, but rather just buy it if the problem is minimal(no guarantee that it will be fixed on next batch). So what would you guys do if you are in my position?

If the OP wanted an S4 I'm sure he'd be over in that forum instead. So please stop making such comments if they're not going to be useful.
OP, although I'm not 100% sure I believe that the gap issues have been resolved now. At least that's what a lot of members have been reporting anyway

"Hate" sounds rather too strong to my ears' liking. I believe S4 is a great phone, but I prefer the One. Not everything can be defined as black or white, some are more complicated.

@Thug_4_Life its exactly about cour chance. in my country lots of guys bought different batches eg ( HT34,HT35) some of them has gap problem some of them has not.
that means you have possibility if you buy new batch.
thats why , batch is not important, if you allowed to unbox device before buy, then dont care about batch (really willing to buy)buy it .dont spend time for nothing.

I bought my ONE last week.
No gaps or dead pixels (batch fa35)

does the fa35 come after the ht35, because i have the gap problem and an elevated speaker grill at the bottom of the phone, bottom left

Sexy Nexie or Sexy Desie?

K you kind folks.... if you had the opportunity to trade you Nexus One for HTC Desire?
would you? Or would you not do it? Please add reason.
I know they're practically the same phone but I'm caught in a dilemma here.
I'd stick with the Nexus.
With the Desire, I'd just install a non-Sense ROM anyway
Hmm..how about there's a higher chance the Nexus one will receive updates before the Desire (Gingerbread?) See how early it had froyo
Where I am from, the telco's are bundling line plans/contracts with Desires, making it affordable and common place. But there is nobody selling Nexus ones here. Now that Google has taken it off its store, this phone has just became even more rare. Love the unique feel about that
These 4 young ladies suggest you hang on to your Nexus
Nexus One + ROM with Desire theme = sexy UI, sexier phone, minus SenseUI crap.

Any suggestion on which one is the best one out right now?
And for all of you who responded... thanks. Now just to add a twist to it...
What if you had 2 Nexus Ones... would you still trade one of them? I'm really leaning towards no right now since the announcement that there aren't any more Nexus Ones.

No. Why would you?
Why do you have two?
I was in the same boat as you last week. I went with the Nexus. The support for it is amazing and I prefer vanilla over Sense (I wasn't before I bought the nexus). I already has Froyo before any other Android device....Correction, WAAAAAAY before any other Android.... The phone is amazing and I love every aspect of it. Hopefully, I will have influenced your decision

If I had two, sure, I'd probably trade just to diversify. But I wouldn't want to replace my primary at this point.
I agree with above. I wouldn't want two of the same devices.... Even though I do love my Nexus . What's the point of having two of the same device when you can have two different ones, with different designs and slightly different features.
Believe it or not the 2 that I have in my possession are Nexus # 4, and #5. I sold my 1st 3 and after the 3rd one, I couldn't last a day without the Nex. So I bought 2 and 1 as backup. (Wife using it in the meantime until she gets her iPhone 4...) I told her it's grounds for divorce for her to own an iPhone 4 =)
The diversity thing makes sense and was the main reason for a trade, but since the Google Announcement, it made it harder to let it go even if I had 1 already. That and that they are practically the same phone too.
Thanks for everyone's input... I'm not gonna do the Desire trade anymore, I'm working on trading it for a Galaxy S if anything. For Diversity sake, I just hope I don't lose my Nexus One somehow.
i'd keep the nexus because the desire has more of a plastic back battery cover and isnt quite as good build quality as the nexus. but the desire is still awesome, i'd just give the edge to nexus.

sexy nexie/desie? yep mate your a proper ******. unless your 12 that is
I'd keep the Nexus, for its triband 3G radio. I'm in Europe and I want to be able to cross the Atlantic and have working 3G and just pop a SIM card in. That's one of the reasons why I had a N900 before, I like to know I have the possibility to make it work both in the US and in Europe. The T-Mobile version, that is.
Keep both Nexi. You wont really be getting diversity in my opinion. You will be getting a few more hard buttons and an optical pad instead of a trackball, and you will lose out on the N1 support. Be strong and hold out till an new phone is released that you don't think twice about switching to. It is not a bad decision to go with the trade, does the Desire sell as easily as the N1?

Have HTC recognised build issues ?

I genuinely hope mine comes perfect, but I was just wondering if anyone from HTC has came out to clarify some of the build issues such as gaps in the unibody.
Or if anyone has had contact directly with HTC highlighting these issues.
...and of course what actions HTC will be taking ?
I know the phone was initially delayed but it still seems as though people are receiving defective handsets.
The gap and speaker covers I think htc is looking at the glue for them

same - a complete guess by me would probably be around 25-30% of XDA users with Ones just from seeing threads etc.
no idea for general people - theyre probably much less fussy
How often are fresh batches made? I mean is it done every couple of week, a month..

Then again, it's usually the people with problems who post, so the sheer volume of the "my phone is defective" posts that you see may not be completely accurate either.

im from the first batch no issues here, but i have heard that S4 users are weary of their initial batches, as the plastic used looks kinda cheap
I hops samsung are addressing their issues of making cheap mass produced phones

In terms of gaps and other issues, that's a question of better fittings to fill the gaps. For things like speaker covers falling off, it's probably a glue issue.
Otherwise, there's basically zero issues. Compared to last year, HTC has improved a lot.
Mine is pretty flawless considering the issues that have been reported here. Just a super tiny gap at the top end of the display, but barely noticeable. Not gonna return it, would most likely get a worse one.

This ^^. Although I'm UK Midlands and I'll be having " one " ( pun ) from first batch.
I'll do exactly the same ha ha. I think I'll be ok, I just want to actually get the bloody device now !
The wait is killing me and my Arc S is just dying with its measly 512MBram.
A previous poster makes a good point - only people who have a problem (or a Samsung) are likely to post.
Just to try to redress that, I got my One on March 22nd - clearly an early batch.
It has no overhang, no gaps between the case and edging strip, no loose speaker grille - in fact absolutely no defect that I can find. Up to now, all features have worked perfectly.
This is, without doubt, the best quality and most exciting phone I have ever owned.
I think people forgot how bad things got last year. Last year the One X forums were LITTERED with massive issues. People talking about how the phone overheated to the point that the polycarbonate started to deform, how the display would flicker and corrupt, how there were lamination issues and yellow spots everywhere on the display. How their phone would creak and the massive gaps that would show. How their wifi antenna would break.
A year may seem like a long time ago, but it was only a year ago that the One X had horrible defect rates.

This time HTC will take care as company's future depends on HTC One. HTC really needs a hughly succesfull phone to get back into the business. HTC One X was their worst mistake in terms of QC.
Yup, mostly ppl with issues will complain about the phone, which is absolutely normal in the General or Q&A sections. So I think for the most part the rest don't have any issues. The S3 forums had many threads exposing problems as well, the Amoled screen on mine turned yellowish when tilted 20 degrees or so and there were many issues with black ink marks which made me and several other ppl angry even though it's an amazing phone.
I think it's normal to try and see if other ppl have the same issue and if there is a solution. Aside from the uneaven build quality which many early batches have I'd say that's very good issues wide.
I don't get why there could be issues between owners of HTC and Samsung, we're all supposed to be on the same side and trying to make android and our android phones better. Both phones are good no one can deny that

What is more funny is you have guys setting up threads complaining about the phone, when they dont even own one
I assume phone is now delayed due to build issues and also from what I hear camera issues be it software or hardware ?? Went to buy one from 3 the strand uk they had none but when I was looking to buy the manager got on the phone then said some are on the way. I asked about issues and he basically avoided the questions so asked about stock levels and he wouldn't tell me. I was put off by the staffs shady behaviour so it convinced me to wait for 64gb which was advertised on an in store flyer. I asked about it and manager said they wont get it. Just felt like they were not being honest want the phone now but decided to wait. Just hope 64gb is released in uk!!!

Gaps in the unibody is a completely made up issue imo. I have still not seen a gap in the construction in any photo posted here. I have seen small gaps, as thin as a hair, where the speaker grille attaches. This is not the zero-gap unibody, it's a speaker grille. This phone is built better than probably any phone on the market today, or in recent memory. All of the whining about "poor build quality" sounds childish and is undeserved by HTC. If anything they deserve some praise for the incredibly GOOD build quality of the One.

HTC First Discontinued

According to BGR, the First is about to be discontinued: http://bgr.com/2013/05/13/htc-first-discontinued-att-facebook-phone/
I love the First, it's a great size that can be used one-handed, it has stock Android, and the battery life is amazing. But I've held off buying one because I want to make sure it gets CyanogenMod support first. If it does get official CM support, I'll go out of my way to get one, if I still can.
Does anybody know how long it will take HTC to release the source for the First, so CM support might start?
The only competitor to the First on AT&T is probably the One Mini, but rumors are that the Mini will have a significantly smaller battery than the First (1700 instead of 2000mah).
Can't say I didn't see it coming. With the lack of support in this section I doubt it would get official CM support.
I might pick up one of these in the bargain bin if I find a good deal somewhere. I'm looking to open a second line for my daughter, without a contract and this one will fit the bill.

yeah might pick one up too. 150$ on eBay isn't bad of a deal.
That's disappointing. Now I question whether it would be a good idea to give my mom this phone.
On the other hand, there is a update with this statement from AT&T in the article:
As mentioned previously, we do pricing promotions all the time and have made no decisions on future plans.

This is one of the best phones I have seen for years. I dont understand why so few people bought it, it even has stock android... It should be easier to develop a working cm for this one than for all these galaxies out there. I would even get over the small storage for all the advantages.

I've been trying to figure out how to compile CM as well, do you have any repositories I could look at yet, or is it all still just on your local checkout? I'm not having as much luck, but I've never built CM for anything beyond my Galaxy Nexus before, so I'm not familiar with porting it to new devices.

This is sad to hear. I just got one for my grandmother too. While 4.1 is nice, the polish of 4.2 vastly improves the experience with things like a timer, stop watch, and swype keyboard. Sadly, I don'y see 4.2 coming official to this device.
The phone has descent specs, at least it could be a good option for some CM10.1 love
I might pick this up soon since it's so cheap now. Will this get 4.2 at least? Hope so. Seems like a good purchase. What color did you guys get it in?
very sad to hear indeed. its a terrific phone. the size is great, love the way the back feels, and the battery life is terrific imo. it feels very sturdy too. as soon as my store got a bunch of dummy units in i knew i was going to like it. im carrying around the company's seed unit and im very impressed (black model... gosh i love the look of that red and baby blue though). would love cm10.1 on this machine.
Here's another vote of confidence for this outcast phone. Really love the design. Who cares what software it's running, we'll flash our own anyway. I've been waiting so long for an upgrade from my HTC Aria, which I got specifically because it was small.
HTC has got to do something with all its unused stock, if they're smart they'll simply remove FB Home and push it back out, if they're dumb we should see these babies go for nothing like the HP TouchPad. Either way this phone has a lot of potential to sell like hotcakes.
Broke my HTC One X screen and got an HTC First for $50 brand new. Agree with all the other positive comments about this phone so far. Rooted. unlocked bootloader, freeze Facebook Home and loving every bit of it so far. My only gripe is the weak camera, but to find solid specs on a smaller form factor is so hard these days.
May I ask where you got it from?

Going from Silver HTC One to Galaxy S4 and back to Black HTC One

I contemplated not writing this. In tech sometimes we require so much perfection, we forget what's actually important to us. Furthermore we forget that any software issue can be conquered by the great devs here at XDA. With the fear of sounding hypocritical, here's why I found myself going back to the HTC One after a short two week affair with the S4.
I had very real issues with my silver HTC One. The S4 was the answer to those issues. After a couple weeks with the S4 I really missed one thing about the HTC One - the camera. I have 2 babies and after missing several pictures of them over the past couple weeks I became very frustrated with the slow launch and slow picture taking of the S4. I was enjoying all the other features but this was beginning to stick in my crawl. So I really researched the issues I was having with the HTC One. I found out that the brightness quick toggle was solved through Viper Rom and menu button was easily mapped to a short hold of the back button.
Now I had a problem because I was torn between going back to the HTC one (most of which for me all had build issues) or staying with the S4 and waiting for developement to speed up camera and some of the overall lag I was experiencing. So I went out to Best Buy and decided to check out a black HTC One. I don't know if it's simply because the manufacturing was updated or refined but it was perfect. Zero gaps, seemless bezel and no dead or stuck pixels. Having only one trade left at best buy I made the leap and swapped back to the HTC One. I think this was a great decision. Again a big factor was the camera, being able to post edit my shots - remove people from the background and make a drama shot without having to put it in that mode before shooting the picture is really fast and convenient. I in one day caught 3 great pictures that I would have needed to adjust settings on BEFORE taking with the S4. Pictures I think I would have missed with the S4. Also I didn't realize how different (brighter and somewhat crisper) the HTC One screen was. There will of course be sacrifices with the HTC One, no swappable battery, awkward placement of power button and no multi-window. But, the tradeoff is one I'm ok with. Black HTC One made the difference for me.
No offense, but wall of text is extremely hard to read.
Welcome back, I think?

Thanks, I broke it up a little. I honestly am glad to be back. I had some issues with the HTC one and panicked a little but with this new one I'm definitely enjoying HTC and especially glad to have ZOE back. It's really a standout feature.

Glad I can help. This has been a hard decision for me but I'm glad to finally settle with the HTC One and think I've made the best decision for me.
In my opinion, figure out a way to swap for the black. I don't know if it's because of a refined manufacturing process, Better materials or what - but the difference between the two colors is night and day. No misfires pushing the back or home buttons and no gaps anywhere. I'll post pics when I get home. If you bought from sprint and go in to change color they'll charge a restocking fee. I would recommend pointing out a flaw with the silver (I'm sure you probably have one) and ask to change to a black one as you have heard reports of better assembly and less issues. If you bought from Best Buy or the like you can swap without fee's. That's why I almost exclusively by phones from Best Buy now.

I agree, Best Buy was the way to go for me. Ended up getting data error 104 all the time on my first one.....exchanged the phone 6 times per sprint techs requests before I figured out they had my SIM ID incorrect on my account. The One (silver) I have is absolutely perfect now.

I spent less then a week with the S4 before I gave in to my overwhelming felling of missing an HTC device. I liked some of the features but the phone just felt cheap and the Sprint service in my area doesn't seem to play well with Samsung Phones. Lots of dropped calls and frequent signal fluctuations. Love the ONE very happy I made the switch...

dont know what to do

planning to buy this phone but i am afraid that i will catch one with a bad camera (camera creating purple/pink tint for the indoor pictures)
i read some forums and i don't know if its a software problem or hardware...the main problem is that i will buy new in the box sealed but with no warranty..... somebody can help with an advice
the statistic is making me worried :http://forum.xda-developers.com/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=14531
Pretty much every HTC One has or will get this problem. Its your decision and on daylight its a very very good camera.

Many phones got this problem even after sending it back to htc for fixing. Nobody really knows if its software or hardware sided.
I would recommend Nexus 5 instead. If you think that camera will be an issue than please don't take the risk. It's your hard earned $600 that you are spending. Go for the maximum utility, satisfaction. If low light camera capability is important for you, this phone is not worthy of a phone.
Written from a user who has this issue, and had no success in getting it fixed via HTC.

Bottom line this is the best phone ever made. Most cameras are fine just check everything out when you get the phone. 4.3 update is rolling out. Get a good case like Otterbox Commuter and a screen protector. Use Nova launcher. Here is my homescreen

I've had this phone since day 1 and have no had any issues with the camera.

after reading more threads i came to the conclusion that it's hardware problem
they are two microchips near to the camera and by heating up they ar disturbing the senzor...
pity i liked very much how the phone looks:crying:

to check you camera make a small (3-4 mins) full hd video and after try to take a picture on low light conditions
I bought my phone in May and by July it started developing the purple tint. While it's not guaranteed that you will get the purple tint, there have been lots of people who do.
Don't get me wrong. I still love my One especially for the Boomsound and LCD display. But I can live with the camera issues cos I use several phones concurrently so I just use another phone if I have to use the camera.
Ultimately it's your call. But my advice is pay extra for the warranty. Especially for this model. Cos if you start getting problems, without warranty you will have no recourse.

3rd phone here and have not had this camera issue on any of the 3
All phones from all brands got hardware/software issues. You can run but you can't hide.

Date of sensor manufactured means nothing. Check these surveys taken from various HTC One users:

You said you won't have warranty, then you are really playing with fire. I advise you to stop wasting time with this phone if you believe that the issue will be a problem for you.

i already seen this two statistics that way i asked your cinesensor... one think i don't understand if HTC company they knew about the issue why they didn't just made the new batch with a hardware fix
even if i never owned had the phone i am loving it.. and buying without warranty its not about the money it's about disponibility

Idk what kind of answer you want as you already said that you love the phone even after considering the facts that you don't own the phone and are aware of the purple tint issue. After all, you make your own choice, we can only help.

100% sure it's software, most phone I have had have had purple/pink or greenish tones in some circumstances which could be corrected with whitebalance settings. My one had purple pictures too after 422 upgrade but now is fine again after 4.3 but maybe not sensor are 100% the same and it might take a little more tweaking by htc to get it right. The One is the best arounfd 5 inch phone out there by a long shot, sense rocks, boomsound, I couldn't live without it anymore, zoes are awesome, the live gallery, blinkfeed. All in all the One is so much better than the SGS4, only if you wany a phablet I would consider another phone.....

only 37 people responded, there are thousands of One users on XDA who probably don't have any problems at all and therefor never checked that thread or bothered to respond
