Deciding to upgrade, or wait - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

One of my biggest fears with this phone (if I upgrade next month, or the month after), is that a little after I upgrade, the main backing devs (the few that actually created new stuff rather than repackage old stuff), will flip their switch to the new phone almost immediately, and then leave this phone in the dust. I mean, I know that is inevitable for almost any phone. But, to me, when I got the Epic 4G Touch, it seemed as if right when the S3 was released, there was a limbo period where no new astounding material came out, and then all focus shifted away from CM9 to CM10.1. Maybe it is just a personal fear, but, still one that I would like to bring up.

No that shouldn't happen many of these have been sold we already have official cm 10.1 slim bean and unofficial aokp and some touchwiz Roms development is not slowing down anytime soon.

I upgraded yesterday from my galaxy nexus. i wanted to wait but said f it...
i'm telling myself i want to wait a good while before i root this one but the dam root bug is gnawing at me :silly:

Any time you get a new device their will always be something newer and hotter around the corner its just the way it is, I just upgraded from the lte over the weekend because most developers had moved on to either the s4 or the one

If you currently have the e4gt, there is a few improvements and one step back as far as I've seen. Bigger screen, higher resolution, better stock battery life, and higher resolution camera. Cons: the e4gt camera, even though it is less megapixel and f-stop than the s4, it takes brighter pictures in low light and even the daytime without a flash. Some think that the pictures on the e4gt look washed out compared to the s4. I don't agree. I posted a few pictures of the same thing with each phone in the pictures thread. It is clearly noticeable that the e4gt has brighter pictures even when both phones are set at the same resolution and mode. I know I will get flamed but the pictures speak for themselves. As for should you upgrade? If you have lte in your area, you'll get better network performance than wimax. My speedtest.net speed run best so far is 32.79 megabits per second on the s4. I was excited to get the phone, but after the first day or two, the hype was greatly exaggerated in my opinion. Don't get me wrong, it's a good top of the line phone, just not a night and day difference over the s2. Do more research to determine if what the s4 has to offer is what you're looking for.

Yup. Rolled out in Germany about a week ago. Released in India today I guess (http://gadgets.ndtv.com/mobiles/news/samsung-galaxy-s4-update-starts-rolling-out-in-india-378129)
So should get here soon enough.

Knowing we're usually last in line (sprint) for updates, it might be a month or two if I had to guess a time frame.

I figured that. And that's still worth waiting to be able to update right away. Rather than rooting, getting a custom rom. Getting all my stuff set up just right, then the update comes out. I'd be upset. Then have to wait for the custom roms to update too.

Upgrade. My experience with this phone so far is amazing.

use the upgrade, phone has been awesome and since you are on xda you will most like root and rom it. There are already plenty of different roms out there you can play with, so much fun

Get the phone already. But honestly you might find yourself not needing too rom it. Outside of debloating anyways. TW is very nice and not obtrusive. Nothing like sense.

How Often Do You Get A New Phone?

I got an iPhone 3G in November of 2009 (On contract) and last September I got my SGS (New off of Craigslist). I keep seeing these new and better phones coming out in the near future and I am saying to myself.
"Self, you want one of those phones".
Examples of said phones:
Galaxy S 2
i997 Infuse 4G
Optimus X2
Optimus Black
Anyway, do you get the newest thing out there or do you stick with one phone for a while?
$500-$700 is a lot to spend on a phone every year, but I love the newest gadget
If it works and does what i want then every ten years or so .
jje
for me, it is every time there is something better for my carrier 1700+2100 AWS, which usually there are not many
I usually hold as much as I can, usually it's 2 to 3 years so I can have the contracts promo's and rebates.
My last one was the good ol' HTC Vogue. Even tough HTC wasn't supporting the device since a while, XDA Devs was and I was running latest android built on it.
Since the popularity of the SGS is pretty more than the HTC Vogue, I assume we'll get amazing support from the comunity also! So I don't think I'll change until another year or two!
I must be sick or something. My SGS works great (Stock JL2, no lag fix, no custom kernel, only rooted). But I still have this little thing about wanting the newest and best.
What will the new Galaxy S2 (Or any listed phone in the OP) have that my SGS doesn't? 4.5" screen, faster CPU (By only a small bit), more MP camera, a flash? Do I really need these things?
Maybe it's a disease or something. Why can't I be happy with what I have? Maybe a woman would help? Anyone know one available?

The phone revolution has finally come to the U.S. so things will have to change...
Before all phones were crappy so it didn't really matter...now every 6 months a phone that was once new will be old news and the new ones will be must haves...
This has been the case in europe for years and so service providers can't force customers into 2 year contracts like here...most contracts are 12 months(and you can upgrade to a new phone practically free in 10mnths) and just to get people into 18 month contracts they have to offer great incentives...hopefully that will become the case here..
But to get to the point..with phones finally getting better you do feel the need to upgrade all the time...don't get carried away...think of it like with a new tv..new ones..bigger ones, faster response time, more color,3d, internet apps, usb ports...they keep adding stuff making you want the latest and the greatest...you don't need it..you want it...but don't need it...
See what your phone has..how you use it and evaluate of it meets your needs...granted now you are using it for a lot more stuff than before...gps, internet searches, facebook updates etc...suit down and think what you use your phone and if it lacks in any department...make a note of all the areas where you would like improvement and then start researching which phone would cover those specified areas..don't get carried away by features that seem cool but once you have them you will not use...(video calling for example..it is a phase..just like it was in europe and it went away fast..not everyone has it here..its not cross platform...ie pc to phone...and it telies on spotty 4g coverage or wifi..). Once you know what you need and find which phone had that...get that phone and stick with it...
I bought the g1 when it came out because I knew I would love android..I was right..after having it for almost two years I found that it was lacking speed due to cpu and lack of memory for installed apps...granted I was using apps2sd to over come its issues but this was a bypass got an issue that was there...i researched and found that the vibrant had exactly what I needed..1ghz cpu and 16gb internal memory for apps and storage...i was right..with nero v5 rom on it and an 8gb card it is amazingly fast and it does EVERYTHING I need...i don't need anything now for a long time...i want the new stuff..i don't need them...now I will wait for a phone that comes with honeycomb and performs well with it...it will be at least 6 to 8 months before I see something worth investigating which will be near my upgrade time so I don't have to spend too much money to get it (i got the vibrant for 99 bucks through amazon wireless with a2yr contact...)
Patience, good research and will power are all key...

"Wish in one hand, **** in the other. See which one gets filled first."
Lol, wish I had every new one that came out
But I renew my phone once every 2 years.
@Ian/w98seng, nope it doesn't change much with a woman around either!
I have a Nokia 6120 Classic right now from 2007 I think , but I LOVE SGS. Hope to get one as soon as possible with a contract. I didn't know about SGS 2, which is nice
Either when something better comes out or when O2 offer me an upgrade
Pretty much only upgrade when my existing contract expires and I get a discount on a new phone
OK, I'll be patient and wait a couple of yeas before I get another phone. It'll be hard and I'll cry a lot, but I'll be a good boy and wait. (Maybe)
you know you can SELL the phone, and upgrade to another phone....
that's what most people do to keep up with the latest and greatest
sell it meanwhile it stills hot (6 month to a year)
then upgrade to the next phone will not be as painful
it's like leasing a phone
you pay a $100 give or take every 6 mth to get a better phone
My job allows me to change the phone every year and I think its an ideal duration to play around, fiddle and poke around in a phone, especially when my company pays for it But exceptionally, Galaxy S keeps surprising me every now and then keeps me busy. Its like a woman, once you conquer it you will get over with it and get bored of it BUT not yet!! Unlike iPhone 3GS where I was looking to move on after 4-5 months.

Wait until your plan allows you to upgrade at low cost (usually after 18mnths on t-mobile) and go for a phone that had honeycomb and decent hardware to run it...I'm thinking 6-8 months from now there will be enough info on the models that are out to make an educated purchase..

The current rumor on the sgs2 is 1.2 ghz cpu, 8mp camera with lcd flash, capacitive touch screen,2.3 gb on it, fm radio with rds, hdmi output, 16gb memory,ffc....
if you have have the current vibrant I suggest trying nero v5 with voodoo lag fix.. ka5 with proper flash support...it will completely changer your phone experience...trust me...make a nandroid so you can give it a try and if you don't like it...restore...it feels like a new phone...search for sbg.v2.4 from jdan as well and that will make it even better...

[Q] The time after 4.2

Hey there,
I'm thinking about my last weeks with my O2x, my Nexus4 is already ordered.
But what will be after CM10/4.2, is there anybody who will use this phone after 4.2
Is there anybody who will create Android 5.0 for this (stupid) phone?
What do you think?
I suppose that me and many other people will use it till it works. If it will work next 30 years, i will probably use O2x for next 30 years.
Yop, I think I will buy next phone in 2014. O2X works, still 2 cores are enough.
N4 looks good, but not for 500€.
yes of course i also use my phone for 30 years if needed, i'll only a buy new android if i seen a smartphone that will satisfy my needs

I am so glad if have my new phone, the LGOS is a mess...
for me,its time to try new OS.i am w8ing lumia 920 to be available in mine country.I'am tired of lags, slowness, flashing roms... and all about Android seems to be. There is lags 2 in top models like S3 with pr.butter so... android still need a lots of improvement in terms of smoothness,bugs....

I will use it of course, hoping it will became better every day with new roms! (as it is happening)
havent you learned....
history repeats itself..... there will always be software faster than hardware.......
unless you want to buy a new piece of hardware every 2 months.
Ordered my N4 for 350€ in germany, but I still love my 02x and I will give this phone to my mom because its good... For a normal user like my mom this phone is great with ics.

I am on the same opinion
10 years average, as long as it dont get wrecked or broken. i'll have it for a long time. new phone will come when i need it, not when i want it =P
4.0.4 is good enough for me.
I guess I'll keep using the O2X until it doesn't work anymore.

My thoughts exactly.
As for the OP's question re: Android 5, might as well think about v.10 or whatever, it would be as (ir)relevant... I am pretty positive v.4.x will be the last for this phone, but I don't care, as long as it works. Even earlier this year I was still using Treo 680 with PalmOS 5. Great phone; the only thing that sucked on it was the internet access, hence my move to Android...

the two phones before this one, was a O2 Xda (Qtec 2020), and a Nokia 7110 i bought 2 extra batteries for each phone over the years to keep them going, and except for a bit of a clean, they are both in pretty excellent condition. i thought i'd get with the times and buy a decent phone.
and i went for something i thought was build very well, with lots of ways to customize, with many possible configs, soon after getting it, i was on the same wagon as the auto reboots and other problems that LG dug themselves with updates. but i'm happy with my purchase. its been worth the cost. and the outcome after the amazing help from the devs here my phone is F*cking awesome. my younger brother has a S3 and its a very pretty phone, i've done my work on it rooting it and moding it for him. and i do like it. but i see my phone as something that works and does not need replacing any time soon.
I am happy if I get my Nexus 4.
My o2x broke with ICS four times, and I must reinstall all apps.
Really annoying if you need your phone for your job.
I'm really really curious about the Nexus 4, will be my second Christmas if it arrives in January.

So what phones are everyone going to be coming from? I'm happy to say I won't be using my Nexus S 4G anymore. The thing was great for the time, but it's definitely showing its age now. Actually being able to take advantage of Network Vision now is gonna be great as well.
will be coming over from the evo lte.
EVO 3D. It is a solid phone but ready for something new.
Biggest worry with this phone is going to be the camera and how hard will it be to get working on ASOP or CM ROMS. This was the biggest frustration with the 3D. Finally they got the camera working but without 3D which I am fine with.

The camera on the 3D was difficult to get working because of the drivers needed because there were two cameras. If there is only one I think it would have been more straightforward as Sensation never had quite that difficulty.
Hopefully this means devs will not have as much problem with getting the camera to work on Non-Sense based ROMs.
I'll be coming from my good ole GNex. I always try to buy a new phone every year around my birthday. GNex was last year, Evo3D before that, and OG Evo before that.
Coming from EVO 3D. My battery barely lasts 1/2 a day without actually using it. It will literally be at 20% from fully charged within approximately 4-5 hours without using the phone. At all. For anything. It wasn't as bad when it was new, but it was never good to begin with. It also heats up quite a bit which was really nice when it was cold. Now that Spring has arrived, I really don't want hot pants. I know the HTC One's battery ain't great, but it's gotta be better than the EVO 3D. I know I could just get a new battery or look for which one of my 200 apps I've installed causing the drain, but then I saw the HTC One...
Anyone else keep checking their pre-order progress? I click on my Newegg Wireless (Simplicity LLC) confirmation email for my Black 32GB like 4 times a day to check on the status.

Yeah, this is what I am hoping for. When the One first was announced, I was reluctant to go that way because the camera seemed like it might be a hindrance again.
I have heard people say that HTC is going to try and release code quicker which should help as well.

If I can somehow talk myself into buying off contract and pay the full price I'll be coming from the EVO 4G LTE. Still mulling over it; $549 is a lot of dinero.

I had a G-NEX for a few months before switching over to my Fiancee's account on Sprint (Figured I would cut down on monthly costs) and at the time the only monetarily valuable phone was the iPhone 5... I've been patiently waiting for something to come out and so I finally sold that and Pre-Ordered yesterday.
Right now I am using my fiancee's EVO Design 4g and I am going crazy with how slow it is. I just installed Evolvr Rom with an older kernel and overclocked it to 2ghz... hopefully that will hold me over until this comes out next week, but my fingers are still crossed for early delivery.
Coming from the EVO 4G LTE :good:
Will be switching from my trusty Samsung Epic 4G! I'm so excited to finally get rid of that darned physical keyboard...
Kinda lusting after either the One or the Galaxy S4. I hear multiple gasps and the sound of torches being lit, let me explain....
My biggest concern isn't so much battery life, screen resolution, storage, etc., but more: when I get to rooting and installing ROMs, whenever something's gone wrong with my trusty ol' OG EVO, there's few things that a battery pull and boot into recovery/reflash/restore couldn't fix. If the One locks up, no removable battery.
Having said that, I'm sure there's a good many people with Nexuses (Nexes? Nexii?) and other non-removable batteries out there who're flashing ROMs and have a way to get out of a bootloop or freeze. All else being equal, I think I'll shoot for the One once it's time to upgrade. HTC's done well for me with my first Android/smartphone, and it sounds like it'll be a great phone.

You don't have to worry about pulling the battery if you no boot or bootloop. There is a hardware key combination that phones with non-removable batteries use to force reset. This is hardwired in not software.

No big deal with the non removable battery. Iirc power and volume up and down simulate a battery pull at least on the Evo lte.

I had the same worry. Similar experiences with the SD Card. Forget to dealt the right file in the bootloader menu it was very easy just to pull the sd card and delete the file.
But I also think this is where the industry is going and I like the look of the phone too much to go to Samsung. Just can't enjoy TouchWiz. While i tend to have CM or ASOP running, I do enjoy Sense as well. Nice to have options. So I figure it is time to learn a new way of doing things.
So, I checked with Best Buy and, while they won't match the pre-order price at Sprint (full device price, not upgrade price), they will match at release date. With that being said, think Sprint will retain the existing price at least 1 or 2 days after it's released? I'd hate to spend the inflated BB price to lock in the pre-order only to be unable to get that $150 refund.
Query
Getting One tomorrow (can't wait) and i will, of course be rooting it and flashing a customer rom. However I can only find topics the AT &T and Sprint version in the main forum index page. I live in the UK, and please forgive if this is stupid question, but is there a developed for the UK version?

Switching from the S5...

Ok so..
Its been about 12 days since I have had this phone. I thought I could be patient enough with it to maybe wait for a root (if developers are even still working on it.)
Turns out I am not so patient.. I would rather switch to a company like HTC who is kind enough to give tools to their customers who want the option to do what they want with their own ****ing cell phone that they purchased. :highfive:
Anyway..
My question is: Is anyone familiar with the return policy? I am pretty sure that it is 14 days and I can trade it back in hopefully for an M8, but if someone that has experience or knowledge with this can shed some more light I would be very grateful.
Second question would be do you guys think the HTC One M8 is the best option for me right now? Ill be going through at&t and I want to be able to root and flash roms. Preferably some of the more popular ones like AOKP or Pac-Man etc..

just go do it. why do you need to ask about it when you already know the terms. simply call them or go to the store.
Later.
I am not sure about the terms, that's why I posted on these forums asking. That's why I said "I'm pretty sure" and asked if someone who knew for sure could give me more details. :good:

what's the point of posting anything here. whats the point of even sharing your thoughts of switching. if you made your decision, just go and do it. why ask us when you can ask AT&T? just leave man
Because I bought it on launch day and I am not sure how many days you get before you can return the phone. A lot of people are switching too or getting the TMO version, so I think a topic like this could become helpful to others as well.
Not sure why you are being rude, if you aren't going to help or say anything worth reading just stop typing. I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings in showing that I think owning a locked down device isn't for me anymore.. it's still a great phone. I just thought I would be more patient or enjoy stock more, but I was wrong.

14 days from purchase to return and a $35 restocking fee are basically the terms.
Personally, I wouldn't switch. I think the S5 is a superior device even without root (for now). but you gotta do what's best for you. Good luck.

Thank you for a real reply and for the information, its really appreciated.
I think the S5 is a superior device too, but I really need root for certain apps. Not to mention flashing roms can be pretty fun.
Also sooo much bloat I just want to remove, not a big deal, but prefer a clean device.
Pretty sure mine will be going back in the next few days as well. I love the camera and the water resistance is great, but for the price, with the ehh battery life I've been getting and some annoying software stuff, it can't do anything that my international Note II can't.
In the future if/when someone can find an exploit and get root, I would definitely give it another shot.

Yea I completely agree. The cons just outweigh the pros for me personally in this situation!
The bloat you can disable until root comes out

I'm enjoying all these people giving up its really quite amusing. I had a backflip and an atrix your puny 12 day wait has nothing on the wait for those phones to have root.

Well the reason for the rush is I can return it for something that already has root and more development. I'd rather get more enjoyment now rather than hope and wait. Although if the return policy stated like 2 months or something, I'd honestly probably still wait those 2 months because I do enjoy this phone.
It's also the principal of the situation too though. I'm not ALL FOR companies that sell overpriced phones that, when bought, are just so locked down that i don't even feel like it's actually fully mine.
I've got a week to decide, I may stop in to have a look at the competition.
I've been seeing a lot of people posting that they aren't getting that great of battery life. I'm getting about 36 hours uptime with about 6 hours screen. Is that better or worse than what you guys are seeing? TIA.

There only seems to be a handful complaining, even on other forums people are getting crazy good battery life. Heck I can have on screen time of 4-5+ hours, tons of email, text, phone calls etc, all sync is on, gps is on etc.... and still have plenty life left at the end of the day, actually as I type this in similar situation I have 22% life left and been off the charger for 33 hours, and even browsing I still have 4 tabs open. First phone where the thought of not having enough battery doesn't even occur to me, going to be nice on trips lol.
Far as the OP, do what you have to do, though I don't know why you'd think root would've been available by now on this phone, this isn't the old days where people could crack same day. I liked the M8 but couldn't put up with the camera and bulkiness plus no water proofing.
I have the M8. If you like flashing and customizing it is a no brainer. I myself am running stock and still enjoy the device.
My wife has a S5. It's pretty and white and shimmers like nail polish. Perfect phone for a beautiful girl.
Also as far as the discussion of superiority of either device. It's an opinionated one. Each excels at their own intended goals.
If the camera of the M8 is scaring you, just ask yourself . " will I be on assignment for national geographic where I will need to take epic photos on the go?"
If you answered no, then this camera should be good enough for your personal use.
It seems like you're just asking for that little push for you to make the trade.
I am giving you that "push". Everything will be okay in HTC land....be free...
Oh yeah. Have fun with the raised speaker grills. The gamble on receiving two variations of the LCD screen and ... Yeah that's about it.
HTC UltimEight ?
It really depends on where you bought the device. Typical return policy would be 14 days. Some vendors do not charge a restocking fees on returns but "I heard" AT&T can charge you. This was forwarded to me from the sales rep. I got my S5 at Target and returned it. I was not charged with a restocking fee by them or At&t that I am aware of.
I got myself the M8 since I wanted root.

I have both, a gunmetal grey m8 and shimmery white tmo s5 sim unlocked for ATT, The m8 is great if you like to mod/customize, you can run Sense, GPE, or AOSP (cm is already being worked on)...The s5 (ATT) obviously is locked down....both phones are very nice it just depends if you need the ability to customize.

Any Flex users getting the LG G3?

I'm thinking on pre ordering a G3. I think I can use my Jump even on a pre order. Not exactly sure how that works. Would be nice to try it out to make sure I like it.
they'll probably have some in stores in a week or so to try out; might as well wait, even though you do have 14 days to return it..

I thought I saw on G+ pre orders will ship on the 15th. Thinking stores will have it the 16th. Not sure why I want a new phone so much. I'm still happy with the Flex. Just want a new toy. Thinking the G3 won't be that much different though. I would get the LG watch but I don't wear watches. LoL
I really miss flashing custom roms/having a working recovery, so I don't think I will buy another LG phone for myself; my wife and son will probably want G3's, once our first jump is active aug12th
I like the M8, and there are tons of roms for it; I would love to try a Z2s, but obviously that isn't happening at TMO any time soon, and, am curious about the upcoming Note4 as well.
Until then, I will not mess around with my rooted 4.4 Flex, since its working pretty well right now, and not worth messing with, especially without TWRP working with it..
I'm thinking the G3 will have a fair share of developers. I thought I saw the Z2 will be out real soon on T-Mobile. I know it's about time. The Z3 is already in the works. LoL. I guess for me I should wait for the Note 4 or maybe even iPhone 6 for something different. It will be hard not to get the G3 though.
well, since you're on the "old" jump, you could try one out, and jump to something different if you dont like it..
Nothing else I would want if I didn't like it though. At least not in the next month I don't think. With my discount I get 30 days to return.
As much as I dont want another Samsung phone, I'll def be checking out the note 4
I owned the note1 and note 2, and really liked both of those phones; tons of roms/tweaks/options, so there was always something new and sweet to try out.
Like you said, who knows what will be out in the next month or so..

Exact same situation here. Note 1/2 then decided a curved LG would be fun and have tons of development cuz it was such a unique idea... Lol.

He man I don't know much about what happened but don't worry about it. Glad your out of the hospital.
I think I'm all done with having the newest phones. From here on out i'm sticking with popular phones with lots of development. Can't stand not being able to flash something cool and new every week. Note 2 spoiled me for sure.

I am thinking of jumping to it. Love lg's software and it has nice hardware to boot. Battery life not as worried about as my new job won't let me on my phone as much, will be too busy. Stand by time should still be amazing.
Only reason really for switching is size. Need something more pocketable.

Not sure how long it will be for Android L comes out but read it improves battery life. I also wouldn't mind a smaller phone. Not sure if I'll miss the size of the Flex screen though.

I am sure I'll will miss it and the curve, but sometimes you just gotta... You know, lol!
Jumping to the G3 till the flex2 or whatever it's called is out, can't stand the menu button, why didn't they have options to change it to task switcher. Apps at playstore is able to change it but I'll lose some of the functionality

I really like the flex... Size, curve, buttons. Even better rooted. The UI is ok. Probably not switch until the new flex. I really miss flashing too. This was the first device I ever got on day 1 with no development. Not sure I want to do that again. Samsung and HTC would really need to come up with something out of this world for me to switch. So many devices right now with similar specs. Size, battery and buttons were probably the biggest things for me. The actual display is iffy on this but the next one will most likely be much better.
Yeah I got a jump in August I think I'm done with LG. I too really miss flashing roms and mods
