HTC One Developer Editionand AT&T radios - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought an HTC One Developer Edition (DE). When I put my AT&T SIM card in I am able to use LTE, H, 3G, and Edge, but it does not say ATT LTE or ATT 4 G. I have used unlocked phones with my SIM card and I always get the AT&T splash page and ATT signal indicator, but with the DE I do not see the AT&T splash page. Is that ok?
My concern is that I do not see ATT 4G for my signal and I notice that my bars are one or two lower than my Z10. Unfortunately I can not check my signal strength with the Z. I know that the number of bars is not always the most accurate way to measure signal strength. Does H on the DE equal AT&T 4 G?
Is there any thing I should down load to make sure that the radios for the DE are optimized for ATT's network or am I all set? Is there anything else I should load on the phone to make it run better for AT&T?

H= HSPA
LTE=4G
The bars are actually more accurate than on an AT&T based firmware, AT&T jacks the bars up to misreport the signal. Look in settings to get the signal meter in dB.
Check your APN and make sure you're using the right one it's either PTA or PHONE.

The apn says phone. When I tried pta the phone didn't work. Ii think you are correct because my phone didn't go to edge today in my office.

he is right. I had both and side by side DBm was fine but signal on the dev is accurate and lower. I can tell you that there is a report that the 2.17 update "fixes" this. As for the AT&T splash screen, its an unbranded so no splash, no bloat ware etc. You could always put the signal icons back and flash the splash screen after going S off. You actually can then change CID two to CWS_01 I think and then reboot and the fancy LTE icons will show. Don't just do that of course grab the right post and follow carefully. Changing CID can perma brick.

This is my first android I will definitely not be trying much yet

The phone SHOULDNT be showing 4G or 4G lte icons. The icons at the top don't reflect what SIM card is in your phone... Like on your Z10 if you put a tmobile SIM in it's gonna still show the ATT icons it's just software.

Once you get used to it and start tinkering, If you change the CID (Carrier ID) to CWS__001 (ATT) you will get the correct ATT icons. Some of us like the ATT icons, i know i do.You must be s-off to do that. If you decide to do it, just change CID in fastboot. Its safe and easy. No need to worry about the 2nd CID change that some of the threads talk about. It's been proven to not be needed. If you are going to stay stockish and get OTA updates, you'll just need to change CID back to the DEV cid to get the updates. Once S-Off, it's as easy as a command. fastboot oem writecid CWS__001.

[Q] Nexus 1 stuck on Edge signal

I just purchased a rooted Nexus 1 from eBay. It came with Cyanogen 6.0 RC3. 5.08 radio. I noticed it was always displaying an E for edge signal. I went into the phone menu (*#*#4636#*#*) to set it to WCDMA Only. It then would not get a signal at all. I set signal back (WCDMA perfered) and Flashed Cyanogen ROM again with 4.06 Radio. I still get only EDGE. I have another Nexus 1 and it goes between H and 3G (HSPA is active in my area). Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this or how to fix?
One is AT&T band and another is T-Mobile band, perhaps?
No they r for T-Mobile. The problem is it only shows edge and never 3g like it should.
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Try flashing back to stock to see if it keeps doing that.
Did you check settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks "use only 2g networks" unchecked. I assume you did since you know the (*#*#4636#*#*) method, but maybe someone else will read this who needs it. If that doesn't work I would test an ATT sim card to clear my curiosity.

Yes I did check this. What will testing phone with ATT sim card do? Phone is advertised as unlocked and rooted. What am I missing?
For 3g, T-Mobile USA exclusively uses the AWS 1700/2100 MHz frequency-band, and ATT uses the 850/2100 MHz band, so a special batch of N1's were made for ATT with different hardware. If a friend's ATT sim card picks up a 3G signal, it means you can't pick up T-mobile usa.
You said the phone was advertised as unlocked and rooted. The thing to check would be to ask if the phone is compatible with ATT's 3G bands or T-mobile's 3g bands. "Unlocked for all GMS carriers" for example, only tells you that it works on all EDGE networks. I haven't seen a Nexus One that can run both 3G networks, but they may exist. (Was there anything in the ad specifically about the 3g bands?)
The ATT Nexus One is more rare, you may be able to sell or trade with someone in the marketplace here on xda or on the internet somewhere.
Sanity check: shut down the phone, take off your battery cover, remove the battery and tell us the FCC ID. It's in the second of three lines of text below where the barcodes are.
My AWS (T-Mobile) Nexus One says:
FCC ID: NM8PB99100
If you have the AT&T version it should say:
FCC ID: NM8PB99110
Note the single-digit difference. If you have the AT&T version you'll want to trade it with someone else who has the T-Mobile version in order to get 3G. If this is the case, you're in luck, because the AT&T version is discontinued and lots of people would be very happy to obtain one from you.

Thanks for the information. You hit the nail on the head! The phone is marked as one of the early AT&T Unlocked models. I also had one of my friends put his AT&T card in the phone and it picked up 3g just fine. I spoke to seller of this phone on ebay and he said he would take item back. IS THERE ANY WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM SO THAT PHONE WILL WORK ON T-MOBILE?

hmm...I don't think so.
Take it back to the seller or trade with someone
As many already stated in the thread (starting with me), you have AT&T Nexus, and there is NO WAY to make it work with T-Mobile. But, as also stated, you're lucky - lot of people will probably be happy to trade with you or buy it from you.
I just got a flawless AT&T Nexus One for next to nada $150 from a guy that heads up the IT department at a hospital, he had bought over a dozen f them and I mistakenly thought that since they were Google Nexus devices and since I had a "android data plan" and because I could make and receive calls and get on the web that all was good! What I didn't realize is that I'd be stuck on EDGE for good, they only real downside is that I cannot be on a call and surf the web at the same time, I'm just glad I got a pristine phone that's outta warranty, and running 2.3.6 (stock) and for only $150! Also I've always been a physical keyboard guy, so darn I get EDGE... I run the fastest web on my WEP encrypted network at home and hop on the VPN network at school, and now that the bastards at TMOB don't offer (unlimited) I really don't use alot of data anyways cause I don't goto social networking sites neways!
Any one wanting to trade a TMOB NEXUS ONE for a ATT NEXUS ONE??

[Q] About htc vivid and new Sim's

I just got an HTC Vivid in the mail today and i have an old Cingular Sim card that's capable of achieving the H+ technology in for example the htc inspire. Now since i live in Portland and there is no LTE yet only H+ why when i put my card in it will make and receive calls and texts but not let me connect to data. Note this is stock ics that the phone was shipped with.
My question is why cant my old Sim work if it can use H+ on my inspire but not on my vivid and also whats different about the newer Sim's then older ones?

this has been asked before and it seems to have something to do with how new your sim card is...mine didnt have to be changed but provisioned for lte
and some have had to have theirs replaced.. here is the thread that it was it was talked about in

The Vivid defaults to using the pta APN. The old SIM cannot connect to pta. You can manually make a legacy APN for wap.cingular or phone which will let you connect, but that's inadvisable.
I'd presume that the reason that a new SIM is required is because you're moving from a 3G technology to a 3-4G bridge technology. I don't know if you have the original Cingular GSM "64k SmartChip", but I had to upgrade that when I first got a 3G enabled phone.

No, that's a 3G-enabled SIM card. It works on UMTS and HSPA, unlike the 64K SmartChip (the GSM SIM) that I had from when EDGE was the best thing since sliced bread. That's why you never needed to upgrade your SIM when faux-G hit on the Inspire.
When I upgraded to the SYNC (see sig), that was right before Cingular was bought by ATT. I had to get a new SIM at that point, and they gave me the one you describe. I had to get another one when I got the Shine, as the contacts on it had corroded (or something; the card refused to read); that time, I got one that said AT&T on it (it was a palette swap of the Cingular card). I was still forced to upgrade yet again when I got the Vivid.
im just going out on a limb here, but i would say it has to do with the apn settings since you have an old cingular sim in a new phone im guessing the apn has been updated for new technology advancements

APN settings are stored in the ROM, not the SIM. The SIM authenticates you with the APNs that it is provisioned for.

I work for At&t, they lie about their data speeds. So basically, the phone might display H+ when your signal is really strong on 3G networks; the OTA updates on the Inspire wanted to make you feel like you were part of the fastest network At&t had to offer at the time. So if you didn't have a 3G sim, you were robbing yourself on speed capabilities, maybe barely but none-the-less. But Cingular SIM cards can only connect to 3G speeds at max. In other words, you're at the max speed for 3G which prompted the phone to display an H+ icon. The Vivid is an LTE capable phone and needs a SIM card with LTE capabilities in order for data to work, even though the new SIMs will also work on 3G, but not the other way around on cingular sims. Oddly enough, you will see a 4G icon when you're maxed out on HSDPA even though you may not be on true LTE networks...as is the case where I live. Hope this wasn't too confusing

I see what you mean everyone yea i actually went in the other day to a store and got a new one for LTE even though there is no LTE in Oregon yet. But i do understand because i did use my Cingular Sim in my vivid and calling/texting did work fine just the data did not work so pretty much for faster internet you need a Sim card that can be provisioned for LTE is what im hearing. Also for the newer tech you need a new one
You can add another APN setting very easily until you can get a new LTE provishoned SIM....THE NEW APN will give you 2g, 3g, HSPA+, Text and Voice....then when you get the new LTE Sim...you can go back and set it to the APN that is named pta....
Let me know by replying if you need the settings for the wap.congular APN and I will post...

Thanks for telling us what many of us probably suspected. I have always thought that most of what we are told is just "marketing hype" until proven otherwise. Much like the burger commercials tha make the subject look soooo tantalizing and huge when in fact it might taste great but is not THAT large.
It is nice to have someone on the inside share "reality" with us!!!

can I use a HSPA sim in Vivid and get LTE?

I tried searching quite a bit but couldn't find the answer, so here it is...
I was going to buy a used Vivid, but when I put my own sim (AT&T GS2 i777) in the Vivid, it has no network connection. The seller said that that might be because AT&T needs to turn on LTE for me before that can be done. However, that doesn't quite make sense to me: I upgraded from iphone 3G to the GS2, and AT&T kept bothering me about not getting 4G even though I have a 4G phone for the first 2 weeks. I brought it back to the store and they straightened it out. My point is, the network worked before that, just not at HSPA speed probably, but it worked. Yet when I put my sim in the Vivid, I get no network connection at all. Is there no fall back?

It's cause you are using LTE (pta) apns...you have two options
1) use legacy apns...can be found in the stickies "general knowledge" thread
2) call att and tell them you would like to enable LTE on your line...it won't change your plan and you won't get charged extra...everything stays the same except they enable LTE for you (I did this option...so I know from expierence)
The galaxy s2 didn't have real 4g it had hspa+, the vivid has real 4glte
I suggest doin the second option so you can enjoy the speeds of true 4g LTE (I get 23mb down and 8mbs up...)
If after having LTE it still doesn't work then your sim is probably incompatible...just go to the att store and ask for an LTE sim...they will give it to you for free

Good news everyone I've solved the problem. Some how my radio signal was set to LTE/Cdma. Sprint said when set to this it trys to pick up LTE or 4g first before picking up cdma.

Would you mind telling me where you are located geographically? I too recently discovered this setting must be set to CDMA only in my area. It's SUPPOSED to connect to 3G when no LTE is available, but for some reason that's not working in my area. And this is a very recent change. About 12 days ago I lost data and it took 3 or 4 days of reboots, reflashes, and phone calls to Sprint before *I* fixed it myself by selecting CDMA only. Sprint never bothered to suggest the change because it's not supposed to matter. I'm baffled by this so it occurred to me you might be in the same area as me.

Would you mind narrowing it down a bit? Are you in one of the areas served by nTelos? In central and SW VA, there are many areas that do not actually use Sprint towers. Sprint has some sort of partnership with nTelos and I happen to live in one of those areas. I have seen info that indicates nTelos will begin rolling out its 4G network in the latter half of 2013 and it occurred to me that the sudden necessity to set the phone to CDMA Only might be related to the early stages of this roll out. Almost as if they have started the process and are transmitting some sort of partial signal that makes the phone think there is a valid 4G connection, which therefore prevents it from looking for a 3G signal. I may be grasping at straws, but after switching to Sprint 3+ years ago on the promise of "the nations first 4G network" AND paying an extra $10 for the privilege, I would REALLY like to finally have access to something better than Sprint's abysmal service in Charlottesville. :crying:
More info on this subject can be found here:

Your towers may be broadcasting CDMA eHRPD (basically EvDo with an extra layer to help handoff between 4G and 3G). I discovered that with the SIM card in my phone being defective, I could not get data from any towers in my area even on 3G. This was confusing to me because I thought that the SIM card was only for 4G data. When I went to check the network type under the about area in settings, it said CDMA - eHRPD. When I switched my phone to CDMA only, the network type changed to CDMA - EvDo Rev A and my data started to work.
If you are using a phone with a broken SIM this could be the problem. My phone did tell me that the SIM card was not detected though, so I knew it was a problem from the beginning. Your issues could be with the towers in your area instead if your SIM is fine.
Also, there are rumors that Sprint may overbuild into nTelos territory since nTelos was not being obedient to Sprint's demands in rolling out NV at the start. This would be good for me as I travel up central VA once a year or so

Very interesting, thanks for the info! To cloud matters even more, the ROM I'm running right now, a 4.2.2 Sense 5 concoction, doesn't even *HAVE* a CDMA Only option.
And you're right about eHRPD, my phone is reporting that as well. Funny thing is, even without the ability to select CDMA Only, I'm having no problem at all with data now. Oh and one more thing that may or may not matter, I flashed a hacked PRL that forces roaming on VZW, so maybe it only works because I'm not even using nTelos' network at the moment.
All I know is that I want Sprint to get their $hit together in this area so I don't have to jump through hoops just to get reasonable service.

Flash radios? No T-Mobile LTE

I have yet to get T-Mobile's lte on my unlocked HTC First. Does anyone know why? ( I have had 2 AT&T unlocked handsets running on lte in my area previously.)
Are there any different radios around I can flash? I am aware that the First and One Mini have nearly the same hardware. Could I try flashing a One Mini radio?
Thanks for the help.

I've also got my first with T-Mobile but all I can get is hspa+ yes we've got the necessary radios for LTE but the phone isn't programmed in a way that it can use them. You'll need a T-Mobile specific RUU for that. But our first is a at&t only handset so none is existent. Will something from the mini work? Maybe. But it's likely that you would end up with a brick. And I don't believe that a T-Mobile specific one exists. Go ahead an try it if you want tho and mess around with stuff but... Beware

Are there any different radios around I can flash? I am aware that the First and One Mini have nearly the same hardware. Could I try flashing a One Mini radio?
Thanks for the help.

They might have the same hardware but different radios so you have to check that

Damn... If I was aware of this before my purchase, I may have gone with a different device.
I don't think lte is worth a possible paperweight. Finding a way to enable lte doesn't seem like too difficult of a task - not that I really know what I'm talking about.
Thanks guys.
I'm on att
And Im off contract with no data. I get WiFi everywhere so... I pay 10 bucks a month for my self on a family plan...

Don't worry about it too much. Hspa+ speeds are great! I get an average of 8mbs down! But I'm in a completely refarmed area. Make sure to check on your device info whether you're getting hspa+ or umts as you might need a different APN. (Umts is 3g but shows up as 4g)
It's HSPA+. However, I live on the edge of the reframed area. In my city I get anywhere from .5 down, up to as high as 3MBs. On lte it was around 10-20 down.

Try these APN settings exactly. They got me an extra 2megs. And the refarming is extending rapidly. Not so long ago I got edge but now I've got great hspa+ everywhere. It will improve only who knows how long it'll take
Could someone test following build.prop settings on T-Mobile?
Don't forget to:
1. make backup of build.prop;
2. you must be s-off;
3. reboot after applying changes.
old -> new
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=14 -> ro.ril.hsdpa.category=24 (T-Mobile dual channel HSPA support)
ro.ril.ltefgi=1577974912 -> ro.ril.ltefgi=1578105984 (LTE features)
ro.ril.disable.lte.band2_5=1 -> ro.ril.disable.lte.band2_5=0 (LTE band 2 and 5, already =0 if you have latest radio)
ro.ril.att.feature=1 -> ro.ril.att.feature=0 (or remove)
EnableLTEBANDSCANPRI=1 -> EnableLTEBANDSCANPRI=0 (or remove)

1. Change max 4g speed;
2. Change LTE features bits, exact number comes from HTC one mini; also there's specific number from T-Mobile HTC one, can't find it right now;
3. Enable additional LTE bands, that maybe supported by T-Mobile;
4 and 5. Specific at&t settings.

Alright my device didn't soft brick and still gets data! Sadly I'm in a 2g only area right now so it'll be a while until I can report back with any results. Hoping this improves something!
Had time to test it out now and there's no difference. Or at least not very noticeable so I returned to stock settings
I also didn't notice any difference. Thanks tho.
a little difference
i went from 10 mb up and 1 down to
15 mb up and 3 down so ill take it
now if some one can help me get 4g lte on this thing that would be great cause i cant figure it out
Could you please verify that your t-mobile sim works with LTE network in other t-mobile phones? Maybe problem in sim cart, cause LTE bands 2 and 4 that used by t-mobile are supported by this phone.

And what the reason of speed increase? Please share.
