Should I keep my one ? - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought a brand new one for $300. It's sealed and all. I only bought it cuz of that cheap price. I have a galaxy s3 that I was going to sell and use the one. But I have been reading all the different threads here and I'm kind of scared. I have read people having the following problems. Screen with lines on it even when it's off. Touch screen not working after only 2 days of use. Headphone jack not working. All different types of problems with the camera. Battery not charging to 100%. Gps issues and several others I can't recall right now cuz I read so much. I know some of these problems are just individual and not across the board. I would love to keep the phone but man that's a lot of issues. I didn't have any problems with my gs3 and didn't read too much about others having it either. Please let me know your thoughts.

Unless it's stolen HTC should give it a warranty for a year no matter what. If you have any of those problems (they probably have been silently fixed on the production line) you can always get a replacement. This phone is a pretty radical design so honestly problems do come up. I've heard about dead pixels and whatnot but these things get sorted out and HTC will just replace it.

Is it a sprint HTC one?

You shouldn't be so worried. The One is a truly wonderful and unique device. Yes there have been reported issues about gaps, lines on screen etc but this is a forum where these get posted. You see maybe 1000 problems, but the 1 mil that don't have problems you won't see ( just as an example ). It's better than any phone I've ever, the speed is insane, battery life is good, screen is the most gorgeous to date. Don't worry about those lines, I see them too but only under a certain angle. It realy doesn't matter that much, in my opinion.

Coming from a Samsung device previously (Note II), HTC has the far superior device, and I haven't had any problems with it ever. And I say that as an unbiased person who has owned numerous other devices from other companies.

I think most people who get a defective unit complain... while most that don't have no reason to post that they rec'd a great product. I myself have a flawless one as well. Plus 5 of my friends...
I'm about to be on my third and my patience is starting to run thin. May keep the next one regardless and RMA direct with Asus. Scary that I'm actually expecting it to be faulty and hope its broken enough for RMA.

No issues here.
99% of the noise is either people with WAY out of kilter expectations for a £160 tablet, or are simply Apple shills.
You also have to consider that on forums like this, you will only ever hear from people with problems. Nobody comes here to say things are running fine.
Every device has manufacturing issues for sure, but considering the high numbers of Nexus7 devices shipped, and the rock-bottom pricing, it's actually rather good. Although try telling gutter press reporters like The Register and Engadget this, they will stir up an old crap if it means website hits. Both sites have destroyed their credibility in recent years over desperate fanboy reporting.

Nope. Mine is flawless.
Another 100% perfect tablet here. This is my first tablet and I have to say that it is unbelievable, especially at this price point. I really think that both the hardware and software on this thing gives us a snapshot into the future of these devices.
I already want to integrate jellybean into some sort of home automation system. With Google Now the possibilities are very cool.
Everything is great except looking on the centre of the left long side the screen is like half a mm lifted but don't mind it and wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't know what to look for

After a few hours fine so far, touch wood.
No dead/stuck pixels.
No sign of screen lift, though I gather this may not be immediately evident.
Don't notice any ghosting.
Thought headphone socket was broken till I realised you need to push a bit harder than I'm used to on other devices to get them to click in place.
Only small glitch was while undergoing a lot of switching between different wifi options (testing speeds on home wifi, mobile tether blue tooth tether etc) settings force closed and sound stopped working till after reboot.
Free content is junk like I expected.
After unlocking bootloader used another email seem to have a second offering of credit. Didn't have card registered so it says I'll get credit when I register a card. Will wait till I have used first credit and know more about any repercussions for this.

Why should someone seek out a defect they wouldn't ordinarily notice or care about? Yes, you can be a hypochondriac when it comes to electronics too. Realistically we all have "something wrong" with us at any given time, and the same thing can be said about your electronic device.
Each and every device (not just N7s) out there has some kind of "minor defect" (and by that I mean doesn't work precisely as the owner might expect). The point is, owner who aren't obsessed about having a "perfect" device don't run 20 different diagnostic apps to try to hunt down that "defect".
I'm not saying every person who complains about a defect is a hypochondriac, there are definitively a select few real issues out there just like their always have been and always will be with every electronic device. However, there are many many more people who will just never be pleased, like those who have had multiple RMAs.
I have had mine since the 17th, no problems yet.

How capable is a Nexus One?

My dad has never had a smartphone and he kinda wants one but not pay much. Dailysteals has one for 79 bucks, but is it too outdated? Thanks for any advice.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
It probably more than covers your dad's needs. Unless you anticipate your father becoming a power user and desiring the latest and greatest games and OS releases the N1 should be fine. A ton of apps, calendar, contacts, email, texting, camera and browser are all there. I have a pair of N1's here that I kept for standbys in case one of our other phones has a problem but honestly I don't think my wife would notice the difference if she didn't have her Sensation 4G. I just asked her what would she miss if she had to go back to the N1 full time and the only thing she could think of is that the N1 is smaller. At $79 it's a nice entry point for someone who doesn't know whether or not they will like a "smartphone."
Thanks for the info. He honestly wouldn't know the difference. I have never owned a Nexus One and wasn't sure if it was too outdated to even consider. I was going to give him GS1 before it broke, but comparing online they have pretty identical specs and I know my GS1 is perfectly capable for him.

Lol just made me think of having to press slightly above center on the "hard" keys to get response. It's not the only phone I've had that kind of issue with though. It didn't overshadow my time with the N1. Had it from launch and still have it. Not my daily phone anymore but it's decent enough for a backup that sits in the car or drawer.

Anyone going to switch from the vivid to the One? idk how i feel about htc after this phone, i mean its a great phone and all but htc bent us over and showed us the 50 states. thank god for the devs. But the phone looks awesome and its sleek as hell too.

What happened to the Droid DNA? The DNA has only been out for 3 months and HTC is already forgetting it.
I believe the answer is somewhere in the neighborhood of "When donkeys and pigs gain aerodynamic and sustained aerial motion" or the successful cloning of a flying Pigasus, whichever happens first... I'm tired of the 1 software upgrade and we're through with you mentality, the fact that you had to do a physical hardware short circuit to S-off and the point that the HTC One contains no easily changed battery, no place to put a microSD card...no, no..(clickty clacky keyboard noises) Computer says NO-o-o-o-o!
The DNA was released for Verizon only. All other major us carriers are getting the one, except verizon. HTC has already announced that 'the one' will be the only one series device in 2013. I understand everyone's setbacks. But I'm not passing up on a hardware beauty like this one. Not to mention it looks like every major dev team is planning on getting at least one. Check out the thread in the one general section to see who all is on board. Also everyone's favorite dev will have one too lol @jon

I gave HTC a shot and I'm done with them :/ I hate having to unlock the bootloader...and s off - that's just stupid...they honestly make it so hard to customize your phone...heck it be easier to jailbreak an iPhone than get an HTC phone setup for Rom flashing, then you got the crappy source...and extra security measures...(in-call Mic issues for att users) - who's to say they won't do the same on the one....if the s off process is anything like the vivids...well good luck with that as I'm pretty sure the one doesn't have a removable battery /end rant
I guess you could call me a Samsung fan boy

I won't pay retail for it but when my upgrade comes I'll get it.
My gf has one, and she loves it. I couldn't get it, though, because it doesn't have SD card expansion. I love my SD card way too much, so I got the Vivid instead. Couldn't be happier.
My one X is s-off a new method recently came out to do it, and it's nothing like the Vivid was cause I owned that to, never bothered to try s-off due to the stupid method.
HTC is doing a stupid move by removing microSD slots from their newer phones. We aren't babies, I'm tired of HTC treating us only a few years older then Apple does their users.
With all that being said, I'm not wasting hundreds and hundreds on a device that can't even include the basics like access to the battery and a MicroSD slot. This is day one **** HTC. I WON'T be getting a one, actually selling my HTC one X right now to switch brands. Sad sad thing.

LG Service Center complaints

I bought my N4 on 22-3-13.
it is a great device and i tried calibrating the screen before sending it in.
i had a REV11 unit.
anyway my problem was that i was having really yellowish tint on all screen but specially from left lower corner.
but the most annoying were the huge black spots especially on the upper side-center of the screen.
ok i did not worry cause some told me that that was just glue waiting to dry (well that is just BS).
the spots became larger and easier to spot when phone was getting hot( normal hot) and my eys were getting tired by that ( i guess because knowing where it is was making me concentate on that).
so i sent it to LG service here in Greece-Athens explaining the problem and along with the phone i sent a comparison pictire with another N4 of a friend.
their response toward me was " We see nothing. it is perfect. we are sending it back to you"!
lol. i asked them to keep it and contacted the customer protection agency.
2 days later LG calls me and says they are exchanging my motherboard. i asked them why, 2 days earlier you found nothing?
the responded it was the fault for the bad screen.
so they sent it back and guess what, the problem is still there and they sent a REV10 which i δon't minδ that but the previous board was flawless.
so now i am very pissed and will send it back on monday but to conclude, how dumb do you have to be not to exchange the screen and instead chang the MB when it is clearly the fault of that?
P.S: which one you think looks better?
The left one for sure is better

also a third one looks just like the left one. great
Personally, I don't see a problem with either. There will always be minor variations with screens.
If you want to be really picky about things, the left one that's "better" has a blueish hue on the top 1/3rd of the screen. I'd rather take the right one, but that's the point it's all subjective.
It looks like gamma variation. IMO the right one looks better. It looks like it has deeper blacks.

I know there are screen variances with this phone, though many don't believe. My coworkers Nexus 4 scree has washed out colors, whites aren't white, and just plain doesn't look as good as all of the others I've seen.

it's not even close.. the one on the left looks great, the one on the right looks like sh*t
You'd have to be blind not to admit that.
I just replicated the exact same thing with my friend's N4.
1) Gamma/Saturation can make it look exactly how yours do.
2) Brightness, I've got one set low and one set high and they do the same as what yours do...

Personally seeing issues like this makes me understand why companies lock bootloaders, and try to chase away modders like most on XDA. We are the most pickiest of all cell phone uses. We create problems that don't really exist and brick more phones than anybody else.
Having two phones with two different color tint is perfectly normal it happens all the time with big screen TVs. A manufactured doesn't always use the same supplier to supply a LCD screen Hance the different color tint.

If they did that successfully, your phone would suck bro. The "modders"as you so elegantly put it are the reason things improve. Don't believe me? Look at how many 3rd apps turned into features that Android uses now as part of their OS. Linux is beautiful because of open source and sharing ideas. Go buy an iPhone and "get on with your life". It's consumers like you that allow mfgs to cram crap down your throat

Nothing against "modders" as I'm one myself. And I do appreciate the work that some have done on certain devices. But I mostly talking about the nitpicking, OCD'ing flashaholic that return devices after devices for minor imperfections like a squeaking volume rocker or yellowish tint, I can name a million more things but lets leave it at that.

Going from Silver HTC One to Galaxy S4 and back to Black HTC One

I contemplated not writing this. In tech sometimes we require so much perfection, we forget what's actually important to us. Furthermore we forget that any software issue can be conquered by the great devs here at XDA. With the fear of sounding hypocritical, here's why I found myself going back to the HTC One after a short two week affair with the S4.
I had very real issues with my silver HTC One. The S4 was the answer to those issues. After a couple weeks with the S4 I really missed one thing about the HTC One - the camera. I have 2 babies and after missing several pictures of them over the past couple weeks I became very frustrated with the slow launch and slow picture taking of the S4. I was enjoying all the other features but this was beginning to stick in my crawl. So I really researched the issues I was having with the HTC One. I found out that the brightness quick toggle was solved through Viper Rom and menu button was easily mapped to a short hold of the back button.
Now I had a problem because I was torn between going back to the HTC one (most of which for me all had build issues) or staying with the S4 and waiting for developement to speed up camera and some of the overall lag I was experiencing. So I went out to Best Buy and decided to check out a black HTC One. I don't know if it's simply because the manufacturing was updated or refined but it was perfect. Zero gaps, seemless bezel and no dead or stuck pixels. Having only one trade left at best buy I made the leap and swapped back to the HTC One. I think this was a great decision. Again a big factor was the camera, being able to post edit my shots - remove people from the background and make a drama shot without having to put it in that mode before shooting the picture is really fast and convenient. I in one day caught 3 great pictures that I would have needed to adjust settings on BEFORE taking with the S4. Pictures I think I would have missed with the S4. Also I didn't realize how different (brighter and somewhat crisper) the HTC One screen was. There will of course be sacrifices with the HTC One, no swappable battery, awkward placement of power button and no multi-window. But, the tradeoff is one I'm ok with. Black HTC One made the difference for me.
No offense, but wall of text is extremely hard to read.
Welcome back, I think?

Don't feel bad my man. I was in the same situation as you. It was just something about this HTC One.

I'm currently in panic mode trying to figure out what to do with my silver One. Thanks for the great post.

...and why is that?
I am about to end my remorse period and am 50-50 on the phone. Love it but gets too hot and eats too much battery sometimes (I'm a light user). I like it but I also got a SGS4 for my friend and I keep staring at it...
So, why panic mode? Thinking of returning... or?

Glad I can help. This has been a hard decision for me but I'm glad to finally settle with the HTC One and think I've made the best decision for me.
In my opinion, figure out a way to swap for the black. I don't know if it's because of a refined manufacturing process, Better materials or what - but the difference between the two colors is night and day. No misfires pushing the back or home buttons and no gaps anywhere. I'll post pics when I get home. If you bought from sprint and go in to change color they'll charge a restocking fee. I would recommend pointing out a flaw with the silver (I'm sure you probably have one) and ask to change to a black one as you have heard reports of better assembly and less issues. If you bought from Best Buy or the like you can swap without fee's. That's why I almost exclusively by phones from Best Buy now.

I agree, Best Buy was the way to go for me. Ended up getting data error 104 all the time on my first one.....exchanged the phone 6 times per sprint techs requests before I figured out they had my SIM ID incorrect on my account. The One (silver) I have is absolutely perfect now.
If I got my HTC one online, can I exchange at best buy?

I spent less then a week with the S4 before I gave in to my overwhelming felling of missing an HTC device. I liked some of the features but the phone just felt cheap and the Sprint service in my area doesn't seem to play well with Samsung Phones. Lots of dropped calls and frequent signal fluctuations. Love the ONE very happy I made the switch...
