My volume down button stopped working on my phone at one point, and it had nothing to do with the ROM - it was broken in stock, it was broken trying to start recovery, etc. It could be just bad buttons.
If you have Minimoto installed in a ROM slot in Safestrap, you could try restoring the stock ROM and see if the volume buttons work there.

I have no clue. All I know is that my volume button stopped working in all ROMs, so I assumed that it was a physical problem with the button rather than a software problem with the ROM I was running. I've read other Droid 3 owners complaining about broken volume buttons, so it seems to be a common problem.
Sorry.
There are apps that have volume controls that will work (they do for me). I use an app called "Quick Settings" that allows you control over lots of volumes.

It is an app, so, no, it does not. But search the play store - maybe there is something.

Feel free to add this to the FAQ, I'm only making a thread of this because I know alot of people have found themselves unable to enter the bootloader using the Down Vol + Power Button combo that is normally supposed to work.
For some odd reason, it seems as if the volume button in some cases is swapped in hardware functions as it relates to the use of the phone when no software is present to run it.
Hence, if your down volume button doesn't work, try using the camera button + power button to enter bootloader mode instead.
Even if you've just Task 29'ed your device only to find that you can't enter bootloader mode normally, that method should work.

I'll be darned, it does work! Thanks Poet' !!!
Otherwise, I had bad volume button issues (stopped working, ROM independent), that I solved by shoving the mini-usb power plug into the mini-usb slot really really hard for 20 seconds or so and wiggling it a bit while pressing against on the volume key on the other side.
I know it sounds strange, but it really worked. My keyboard issues also stopped after that. Theories?
WOW! My volume button is broken, and couldn't flash ROMs from microSD (didnt bother me tooo much), but it works again This is a god send! Thanks!

Thanks for the tip, but its physically phucked! Slight crack near the volume button, but only the volume button doesent work, sometimes it does work if pressure is applied to the case near the crack, but rarely Not too bad though, i can live with it, after all, we can change volume with the 6.5.X top bar as its not fidly, or even in 6.5 by disabling HTC notifications (which i hate anyway)
I did try ramming the mini usb power plug into it, different pressure while pushing it, moving it while it was inside etc, no such luck and i am a brute with this phone. I love how it can take a drop/punch/scratch. Built solid
a silly volume button doesent really decrease my fuctionality, or doesent do much to stop me changing volume! lol cant complain.

Glad to hear it!
It seems like I have to redo the fix technique about every 1-2 days, but it seems to always solve the problem. Very odd!

Dudes with volume key unresponsive problems:
See my post in the general forum about how to solve the volume key problem. At least for me, turns out that very slight *downward* pressure on the USB port solved the problem. Crazy, I know.
ask 4 a favor
Hi guys,
is there any possible i ask (maybe) the same problem?
maybe i had the same problem here. it wont enter to the bootloader. my phone just won't turn on, i already try to use the power button and volume button (not working), try to use power button + Cam button (won't work either). btw when i charge my X1, the illuminations light didn't show up, when i try to charge w/o the battery only red light on the power button, but once i put the battery again the lights turn off. is there any possible that my phone totally dead? thanks guys, appreciate for your help.

Can anyone tell me how to make the button work again?
I read many threads about similar problems but couldnt find the solution.
Thanks.
Are you sure it isnt related with the button phisically?
Im asking because i never heard of such problem.

Yes, when I plug in the headphones they keep on plugging out.
....
i have the same problem, but it's true for all roms that i try.....maybe it's just a hardware problem....
anyways, i suggest remapping the gesture key as the lock button....at least the only problems you'll only have is that you have to do this everytime you flash a rom and that this will not work as the power button; meaning if you shutdown your phone, the only way to turn it on is by connecting it to a power source...
..then again, you can just get it fixed at a shop......
hope i helped a little
Okay so I have searched the world wide web over and I cannot find a solution to this problem. I rooted and flashed cm7 to my Captivate. I did not make any backup before doing this as I just jumped right in without proper research beforehand. Everything went smooth until my power button randomly stopped working. I disassembled and cleaned the power button multiple times with CRC Electronic Cleaner to no avail and it did nothing. Then I attempted using Odin One Click only to realize I somehow no longer have access to download mode no matter what I do. Now my power down menu (menu that appears when power button is held) pops up randomly without the button being touched. All that to say I would like to get my phone back to stock out of the box condition and see if that would solve all my problems but I can't figure out a way to do that without download mode.....??? Please help :crying:
Make or buy a jig, that'll fix your download mode issue then just flash with odin.
Also your power button issue won't be fixed by going back to stock. The only true fix is to get a replacement button. However it's not very easy because it's soldered onto the board.

I remember seeing a thread on here about mapping the power button to a volume button if I'm not mistaken, it doesn't really "fix" the issue so much as work around it but it's still something to try to the unskilled electrical person

Well I cleaned my cousin's nonfunctional power button and got it back in working order so I thought maybe the rom could be my problem sonce cleaning didn't work but maybe it is just permanently damaged.

Also there is actually an option on cm7 to use the volume rocker to wake the device which I am using I would just like restore use of my power button.
Check out mobiletechvideos.com for the repair. Very well known and reputable around these xda forums...

I think this is a hardware issue and not a rom issue, I've never heard of a supported ROM causing the power button to not work. Have you tried a key test in recovery? If it detects the button then yes it's a rom issue if not then it's hardware.
Mobiletechvideos.com is very good, never used personally but I've seen a lot of people take their cappys to them to fix USB ports etc.

I don't understand the information produced when I do the key test. I get "Key: 217". Another try produced "Key: 217" "Key:158" I don't understand the codes and I can't seem to find them online.
When you press the power key, it should spit out a number. The number isn't important so much as the fact that it RECOGNIZES that the button was pressed. If that's the case I don't think it's hardware and rather software.

It could be but again it could still be a hardware issue. In my experience with the captivate my power button started out sporadically popping up the power menu. Then it quit working all together. Then one day it just started working again. And still to this day it will occasionally act up again. When it does I haven't changed anything to do with my software setup.

True, but if it always works during the keytest and never once actually booted into the rom, then it would be software. My iPhone 3GS used to have a broken sleep button, so I just ended up remapping it to the volume keys and that was fine for me. Less work and never really found it a big deal especially with older devices.
Hey there,
Did anyone encounter any problems with their power button? as in it just stopped working all of a sudden?
I happens to me once every few weeks and it works fine after I reset my phone.

Hey, sorry for the late replay but anyways this what I'm using:
stock kitkat 4.4.4 rooted, and I do use a button functionality modification software.
But I use it for the volume buttons leaving the power button and camera button unchanged.
Funny thing is that all the other buttons work just fine when this happens.

Hi all,
Now I am facing an annoying issue, the phone usually does not wake up after pressing the power button, however, the phone still active while the screen is black (i.e. long press on the power button makes a vibration because of the power menu which should be appeared, when I press volume buttons I hear the volume change sound ... etc.). It may wake up after a while, and sometimes I have to restart the phone in order to make a call, for instance.
After months of using Neo's Resurrection Remix, which was working smoothly until a week ago, I have installed Lineage 15.1 yesterday freshly, and still facing this issue. Moreover, I don't use any kind of screen protectors or covers.
Anyone have faced it before? Should I try a custom kernal? Or go back to the stock ROM? Or it is a hardware issue (I wish it is not :crying?
Thanks in advance guys,
Regards.
Loose internal cable, I think? Yep, probably hardware issue. Did you drop it recently?
