Feel free to add this to the FAQ, I'm only making a thread of this because I know alot of people have found themselves unable to enter the bootloader using the Down Vol + Power Button combo that is normally supposed to work.
For some odd reason, it seems as if the volume button in some cases is swapped in hardware functions as it relates to the use of the phone when no software is present to run it.
Hence, if your down volume button doesn't work, try using the camera button + power button to enter bootloader mode instead.
Even if you've just Task 29'ed your device only to find that you can't enter bootloader mode normally, that method should work.

I'll be darned, it does work! Thanks Poet' !!!
Otherwise, I had bad volume button issues (stopped working, ROM independent), that I solved by shoving the mini-usb power plug into the mini-usb slot really really hard for 20 seconds or so and wiggling it a bit while pressing against on the volume key on the other side.
I know it sounds strange, but it really worked. My keyboard issues also stopped after that. Theories?
WOW! My volume button is broken, and couldn't flash ROMs from microSD (didnt bother me tooo much), but it works again This is a god send! Thanks!

Thanks for the tip, but its physically phucked! Slight crack near the volume button, but only the volume button doesent work, sometimes it does work if pressure is applied to the case near the crack, but rarely Not too bad though, i can live with it, after all, we can change volume with the 6.5.X top bar as its not fidly, or even in 6.5 by disabling HTC notifications (which i hate anyway)
I did try ramming the mini usb power plug into it, different pressure while pushing it, moving it while it was inside etc, no such luck and i am a brute with this phone. I love how it can take a drop/punch/scratch. Built solid
a silly volume button doesent really decrease my fuctionality, or doesent do much to stop me changing volume! lol cant complain.

Dudes with volume key unresponsive problems:
See my post in the general forum about how to solve the volume key problem. At least for me, turns out that very slight *downward* pressure on the USB port solved the problem. Crazy, I know.

Hi guys,
is there any possible i ask (maybe) the same problem?
maybe i had the same problem here. it wont enter to the bootloader. my phone just won't turn on, i already try to use the power button and volume button (not working), try to use power button + Cam button (won't work either). btw when i charge my X1, the illuminations light didn't show up, when i try to charge w/o the battery only red light on the power button, but once i put the battery again the lights turn off. is there any possible that my phone totally dead? thanks guys, appreciate for your help.

Mine is a stupid question.
Looking at my new nexus s the hardware buttons are protruding unlike the old motoria milestone.
They feel not so rocks so I was thinking, what if the power button break?
How turn on the phone or wake up it? How to enter recovery?
if you're worried try to use it as little as possible
my nexus s wakes up when i touch the screen and locks when i put it into my pocket (proximity sensor). So i use the power button about once a week to reboot.
but if it breaks nontheless - send your nexus to samsung they'll fix it.
ive been with a broken power button for almost 5 months now. i use the volume rocker to wake, and the lockscreen widget to lock the phone. also, i use the twrp recovery that has options to use for a select instead of the power button. ive even forgotten that i had a working power button
I would just contact Samsung the phone hasn't been out for a year yet. They should cover this just make sure your phone is unrooted and running stock.

How do you enter recovery without it?

How do you have this function? What rom do you use?
CM7 has the wake key functions. CWM recovery also allows the use of the soft keys.

many ways..
in the terminal emulator app type..
su(press enter)
reboot recovery(press enter)
or there are many apps that will boot you into recovery, like RootBooter.
if all else fails, you can enter recovery via adb or fastboot too, via your computer. once you stop using the power button, you will "see" many ways around it. there are root apps that can remap your buttons too.

i gently flick the back of the phone(right under the lens) with my finger), and instantly, the phone powers up. since i test the trinity kernel before releases, i get many that dont boot, and need to go straight into recovery to flash another kernel so that my phone could boot. i do the same thing with the gentle flick to the back of the phone. i boot the phone into fastboot mode, select recovery, then instead of pressing the power button to select recovery, i gently flick the back of the phone right under the lens and the recovery option gets selected. from there i flash another kernel(or rom) and boot the phone. i havent had any issues for the past 5 months doing this, and i flash many times almost each and every day.

Hi, my little italian friend ! I hope you will solve your problem
I have to say, i am truelly interested in how you can get your phone to turn off when you put it in your pocket. Would save me alot of button presses.
I'm currently looking into the Cyanogen 7.1 lockscreen menu but can't seem to find anything for the proximity sensor.
Please enlighten us.

I'm just testing how to proceed in case ok broke
I installed JellyBam recently and the power button was working fine...after a while the power button started working with some difficulty...now i cant lock or unlock and im using the volume wake up setting.
Can anyone tell me how to make the button work again?
I read many threads about similar problems but couldnt find the solution.
Thanks.
Are you sure it isnt related with the button phisically?
Im asking because i never heard of such problem.

Yes, when I plug in the headphones they keep on plugging out.
....
i have the same problem, but it's true for all roms that i try.....maybe it's just a hardware problem....
anyways, i suggest remapping the gesture key as the lock button....at least the only problems you'll only have is that you have to do this everytime you flash a rom and that this will not work as the power button; meaning if you shutdown your phone, the only way to turn it on is by connecting it to a power source...
..then again, you can just get it fixed at a shop......
hope i helped a little

My volume down button stopped working on my phone at one point, and it had nothing to do with the ROM - it was broken in stock, it was broken trying to start recovery, etc. It could be just bad buttons.
If you have Minimoto installed in a ROM slot in Safestrap, you could try restoring the stock ROM and see if the volume buttons work there.

I have no clue. All I know is that my volume button stopped working in all ROMs, so I assumed that it was a physical problem with the button rather than a software problem with the ROM I was running. I've read other Droid 3 owners complaining about broken volume buttons, so it seems to be a common problem.
Sorry.
There are apps that have volume controls that will work (they do for me). I use an app called "Quick Settings" that allows you control over lots of volumes.

Hi,
Every couple of weeks I give my Xperia Z a wash, this has turned out to be a bad idea. 2 days ago I washed the phone, held it under a running tap for 20 seconds, and now the power button does not work.
Luckily I can unlock the phone using the volume button and I can activate lock screen via a widget. Now I have to send it back to Sony for repair and I am running CM10.2, do you think that I should revert to stock ROM? If so, how would you revert to stock with no power button...
Any advice gratefully received.

Hi,
I am using CM10.2
I press the volume button and it activates the screen, then I unlock.
Update!
The phone switches itself on, so I guess the power button is constantly being pressed? Luckily I have been able to use Flashtool to revert to stock, now I just have to wait for Sony support to get back to me for the repair.
Next time use another detergent

Maybe for you, but in my case, it is generally stuck on. Yesterday it kept waking itself and bringing up the shut down dialogue. Volume up pressed rapidly in succession, also seemed to trigger the power button, which is how I managed to use recovery to install a stock ROM.
Lock the bootloader before sending the phone to service.

Yeah, no problem.
You just won't have DRM keys (obviously) and no Bravia Engine either.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2406672
Send my phone for repair and I just heared today it's covered by warranty, I had the device reverted from cm10.1 to stock and relocked the bootloader
So unlocking the bootloader does NOT break your warranty it only might give additional costs for replacing your nand or such to revert back to stock so to prevent getting those extra costs you simply have to revert your phone to stock firmware and relock the bootloader.
I had those extra costs on my Xperia S before btw, I did have a unlocked bootloader which I didn't relock :/
It might void your warranty if you have damaged any internal hardware like the cpu or nand, memory etc etc since they might not know for sure if it was the fault of custom software or a technical problem on their production side.
Keep in mind my Xperia Z was one of the first batch which had the dust issue on the camera, this might also be a reason why they repair/replace* my phone under warranty.
*No info on that yet.
Since you have no power button it might be tricky to enter fastboot, try using adb or booting into touch*recovery with a terminal command and then reboot from there into fastboot.
*touch is recommended since you can't select a option otherwise without a powerbutton LOL
Thanks, I will do that.
