[Q] KFHD Wifi issues: fix or swap it? - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I have a 7" KFHD. I got it the other day because 32 gig dedicated video tablet? Heck yeah.
But, I instantly had issues setting up email, and with wifi getting and staying connected. So, I did the latest OTA.
Still, same issue.
So, I installed the second bootloader and a custom rom.
STILL the same issue.
Wifi will cut out or not connect, or will say poor signal when I'm under ten feet from the router. I'm starting to think the antenna on this single unit is screwy.
Anyone find a fix for this or should I put it to stock and swap it out for a new one or another similar tablet?

Hmm well a bad antennae isn't impossible, could be a issue with router strength, thought I thought I'd mention a problem I had though I don't know if its related I'm leaning on it might not be be but in have no idea so I'll mention it anyway. I have an older laptop from the 90's I set up with a server os a while back, and it uses a 802.11b wireless pcmcia card. For some reason whenever I have that b card connected to my network the n card in my kindle glitches while streaming or anything like that and will disconnect from the router for a min, probably because its having to downsize the speed too much. Doubt this is this case but if u have a b card on your network I would disable it.

nope, everything here is either N or G.

Check the router settings to ensure the channel selection is set to auto, or if auto is not available set it to a higher number, usually 11, also check the router to see if it has an inbuilt firewall that is limiting or preventing connections.

Have you tried connecting the Kindle to a different router, such as at a coffee shop or a friend's house? It could be a simple matter of incompatability, although that is pretty rare these days.
If you have the same problem somewhere else, exchange the unit!

[Q] Anyone still having wifi issues???

I have looked at every thread and forum possible for the past 2 months. My wifes nexus and my own connects to our home wifi for a few minutes then disconnects itself (weather the screen times out or not) and will not reconnect at all. I have tried the wifi fix apps on the market, changed the settings on my router numerous times, factory rest my router and phone, changed roms, and even routers but nothing seems to work. My wife's nexus is stock and not rooted so I have been using hers as a reference thinking it was maybe a rom I was using but she is having the same problem. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
sigep235
I had that problem but as soon as I got to 2.2.1 and/or used a newer Radio version, the problem disappeared...
Although, N1s are still very picky on routers...try with another router and check if it keeps the connection alive.
Also check your router settings to see if they're optimal (try having no password set and see if it keeps the connection...if it does then it might be a problem with the N1 not crypting information well or so)
You could also try updating the router's firmware.
Make sure your wifi policy is set to "Never" (go in wifi settings the press Menu and click on settings)
Last thing you could try is manually set an IP address + gateway + netmask in the wifi settings as well as setting your N1's mac address to that same IP address in the router...
If nothing works then, I'm completely out of solutions
I just got on to look at some of the settings with my router when I noticed that some times when my phone says I am connected to the wifi there is no IP address assigned to the phone. Under connected devices it says "android device" but with no ip address associated with it...
I still have the problem
I still have the problem. I have pretty much given up on it. I have heard that if you increase the minimum CPU speed a little, it will help. I'm not willing to do that as it will undoubtedly waste more battery.
I have changed the wifi sleep policy back to "when screen turns off", because having it on "never" would make the phone think it's connected..when it isn't..leading to hours of no email notifications and such. But I can't imagine how frustrating this must be for people who don't have a data plan or some other similar situation.
I'm thinking about getting a Wireless N router (I have a G right now) and seeing if that helps. But even if I was to get one, I don't have much money to spare so I'd probably get the cheapest N routers, around 30-50 dollars..and I don't know if those are any good...or if there really isn't any difference between the high priced and low priced ones.
I said this in another thread, but I'll say it here.
I tried all of the things everyone could suggest and none of them worked. When I heard Broadcom updated the driver and CyanogenMod put it into his nightlies, I bit the bullet, unlocked my bootloader and installed CM6 and it changed NOTHING. So I went out and bought a new router: Cisco E3000. It works great. So I guess it was a bad combination of phone and router. I had to spend hundreds of dollars. Really ****ing pissed me off. But I wasn't going to buy a cheaper router without dual channel wireless N.

Nexus has N connectivity but only on one band (2.4Ghz) and I don't think the technology matter (heck, I'm still on 802.11b ) it's really more of a phone/router combination problem...
I did actually test on my VERY CHEAP spare 802.11g router (DLink --> do not buy their products) and the connection did NOT stay...that was back when I was on stock FRG83 though...I should try again on Cyanogen but I'm wayyy too lazy ^^
btw, I really don't get why people always unlock when they wanna flash a rom....heck, keep your warranty!! there is an easy way of doing it without unlocking...meh
PS: I have a 50MB data plan (technically, I didn't buy a data plan, it came free) so I AM a heavy wifi user and it was such a pissoff to find out that my new Nexus One couldn't connect to Wifi and keep the connection alive...now I'm damn happy that it works after all that fiddling ^^
@sigep: try to assign a manual ip to your N1's mac addres...or update firmware, it definitely looks like a router problem...
The root without unlocking method wasn't too tested when I unlocked my bootloader.
I have made two swaps with no problems since.

Oh kay sorry then
Although all the new wikis and todos should emphasize on the locked bootloader methods to avoid voiding warranties...although I admit fastboot is always noobproof but I digress ^^
I've been testing several routers from different brands, and the only one that seems to work fine with mi Nexus One is the Linksys/Cisco WAG160N (802.11n, but 2.4 GHz only). However this one has other issues of its own, like not being able to connect to mapped ports after two days up and running (not even from the LAN). The N1 works fine, thought, it doesn't disconnect overnight.
I've also tried an SMC (SMC SMC7904WBRA-N, I think). This one is really bad, the router freezes after only two days of use, the lights freeze and it stops working altogether. I returned it after a week.
I'm currently using a Sitecom (300N WL-348). With this one the N1 WiFi is dropped over night, and the connection to this AP is disabled. I'm still testing if moving to a less crowded channel could fix that. I hope it does, since this router seems to have a more stable firmware that the Linksys/Cisco, same WiFi coverage (which is quite good), and even better WiFi performance. Not all is good, though, DSL performance is worse.
In the past I used Netgear routers. The firmware was stable as rock, but the hardware not so much and after a year of use they are very prone to failing. No idea if newer models are any better in this regard, they are impossible to find, so I don't think this has improved.
Since I have DSL at home, I'm looking at routers with DSL modem built in, so I don't have to have two devices (DSL modem and wireless router).
From my observarions - Nexus will disconnect from WiFi when the IP it has is lost and the network doesn't supply IP on time. After 1 or 2 IP assignment timeouts, it will skip the network and refuse to connect.
Every router I've connected to that supplied IP on time, even when revoked every X min, didn't cause disconnects.
Of course, WiFi on sleep set to "Never".
Success! Last night I updated the firmware of the Sitecom router, and changed the WiFi channels (it's set to use wide channel, so it uses two channels). This morning the N1 had still a solid WiFi connection and over night it updated all services just fine (weather, Facebook, email).
I've been using the Sitecom router since my last post with no issues. Then last friday arrived a small update that broke WiFi. On Saturday arrived the bigger update to Android 2.2.1 but the problem with WiFi remains. Before 2.2.1 Wifi has been working fine every day at home and work, now with 2.2.1 it's broken at home and work.
Are we moving forward? If Gingerbread doesn't fix this problem I'll have to do something about it: try cooked ROMs or even getting another phone . Currently my N1 keeps disabling my access points all the time.

Is my nook defective? (wifi issues)

My home wifi and phone tethering works rather perfectly, but my university wifi is driving me nuts. I'm using 802.1x EAP, and it rarely connects and when it does, it says connected with no internet and keeps dropping connections. While my laptop, kindle, and my phone all get over 4 bars, the nook color fluctuates from 2 to 3.... Overall, no connection!!! Would swapping my nook color solve this problem?
My signal is not as good as other devices, but it does not drop.
After testing your settings, you could always buy another unit, test it, then return it
I've been having the same issue, Hahyun. Apparently the workaround for normal, generally unskinned Android devices is to use a program like FullWifi or an advanced wifi settings config app but for some reason, the settings never seem to stick.

I've been having problems with my WI-FI as well. I thought it had to do with low battery but I fully charged it and had the same problem. I couldnt connect to my home router and evey other device can (laptop, captivate, etc..) but my nook color connected to my mobile AP on my Captivate no prob. I changed the security on my home router to WPA from wpa2-psk aes and it worked. I was very surprised!!!! Did I fix it? No about 2 days later I'm not connecting anymore. It must have been a coincidence that I connected to my router after the change. Anyone else have a clue about why this is happening?

I was at our Budapest office last week, which also uses wpa2/psk and neither my nook or my android phone could connect to the wireless there. I couldn't even see the network.
My laptop could connect just fine though.
Definitely something fishy there.
Well my android phone definitely connects.. with full bars!! But nook color gets 2 if it does connect...

I might have the exception because my wifi reception is better than in my other devices (iphone, ipad, htc surround, 4 laptops (mac, dell, asus and hp). I can actually pick networks in my neighborhood that don't show up on my other devices and connect to a wifi network and keep that connection even though is 3 houses down the street.
Hmm.. so I should trade in my nook?

I agree. My nook shows WAYYY more wi-fi hotspots than any other device I own probably since the wireless-N.
Maybe there on to something with this "Spare Parts" app
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=889951
Im gonna give it a shot when I get off work in a few hours.
I had issues with my wifi signal strength. When I took it back to the store I compared mine to the store models and they would have 15-20 networks come up and I had 5 all with 1 or 2 bars. They exchanged it on the spot for me.
Ok thx fir the reply.

[Q] Any Issues with WiFi

Loving the phone really, one thing i have noticed is when ever im downloading or uploading large files through my home WIFI after a short period the phone disconnects from the network and i have to reconnect manually. Any ideas is anyone else having the same issue. All my other devices are fine
Same thing here, but it reconnects itself - just losing the connection for 1-2 seconds. It happens sometimes even when browsing the web. Most likely some kind of software bug.
Had similar symptoms when playing with the phone at work`s WiFi (1st day of usage). On my home WiFi nothing wrong at all.
Make sure that keep WiFi on during sleep is always.

I found that WiFi is one of the most power draining things on phones. The best thing would be to switch to mobile data while sleeping and turn wifi off during that time.
That way you can still receive everything, but since you're sleeping you will barely use any data at all.
To bad the phone can't do that automatically.
I'm getting frequent wifi drops in my home (netgear router, wpa psk security) and its also affecting other devices in the house! Other wifi networks I've connected to seem to be fine, no issues whatsoever. Sometimes it'll say its connected, but no data, other times it will disconnect entirely.
This is a VERY strange problem and the fact that its affecting the wifi connection to other devices is even stranger.
Just an update on this, I returned my phone to P4U this morning as the wifi thing was annoying me and the phone has eaten 823mb of mobile data in one weekend even though i had mobile data turned off and connected to WIFI, The handset said i used 115mb and Voda said 823mb. not the only reason i returned it but it needed changing. So got my new handset up and running this afternoon and im set up and i been downloading all my files and apps with out any problems.
So looks like i had a dud phone first time around.

Getting the same problem too. All my other devices (Nexus7, Ipad, PC) can connect fine to my wireless home network (fibre). But when I start connecting my Xperia Z to the wireless network, after 5 mins, my Gateway will hang, and restart itself. Happens all the time without fail as long as I have my phone hooked up to the wireless network.
Anyone else facing this problem?? I'm kinda at a loss now on how to solve it. Tried adjusting settings on my wireless channel too but doesn't seem to help. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

Ok, so i reckon this could be an issue with not having a static I.P address. Gonna change it tonight when I get home and see if the problem is solved. It's either that or it may be trying to connect to a port thats used for something else? Have ports assigned for my Xbox ect. I'm not too knowledgeable about these things so any other suggestions are welcome. Not too many settings on the phone unfortunately so the problem has to be solved using the router I'd say.

I have static ip set up since the beginning, and I also have the problems. Only my problem seems to stem from 2.4 GHz/ 5 GHz (if this is even possible). 5 GHz is the preferred one, but this one seems to be out of range sometimes and it switches to mobile data. The 5 GHz is then out of range, while the 2.4 GHz is not. Very strange.
Ive found the Xperia Z has held on to a 5GHz Wi-Fi signal better than any other device I've used before, but the 2.4GHz can often disappear...
Very odd, although at home I am quite happy that 5GHz works better as there's far less interference from local neighbours. Perhaps that's causing the problem - in that the XZ isn't so well set up to cope with other routers on the same Wi-Fi channels??
The reach of my 2.4 GHz is at 75%, while 5 GHz is at 50%??? Strange.
I would always expect 2.4GHz to carry further, and so I am surprised by my experience too.
In my case, there's only 1 5GHz router visible other than mine, but countless 2.4GHz ones. Not sure why that would make the XZ drop (and sometimes even lose) the connection - but that's what seems to be happening.
Xperia Z no wi-fi without SIM
I have a different wi-fi issue with my Xperia Z. It does not connect to my home wi-fi when there is no SIM in the phone. It just says that the network is out of reach. When I pop in the SIM card, it connects automatically. Actually, all the hi-end Sony phones I tried recently do this (Ion, T and more). I've been looking for a solution here on the forum, but didn't find any helpful topic. But maybe I was looking wrong. Does anyone know, what to do?

I think the obvious answer is put a SIM in there... and if that means getting any old SIM and cutting it to size, even if it's not registered on any network, then do that.
I wonder if it the phone is looking at the SIM to identify the country, and therefore what channels can be used? I say this because when I first used the phone (without SIM) I also had problems [router not showing up in a scan], and my router is on channel 13. I then put in a SIM and at some stage did another scan and it found my router.
Is your router perhaps on channel 11, 12 or 13?
I know it's a long shot, but who knows?

Interesting point, will try to investigate with the channels. And I may also try to dig out some inactive SIM, thanks for the tip... The only thing I found is, that the problem obviously appears only with the WPA2-PSK security. With WPA, its all a-OK...
If you look inside the build.prop
The wifi.channel is not assigned, maybe this can gives you an idea guys.

I called Moto and after dealing with their terrible level 1 support I got the following:
HERE ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOING THE WIPE CACHE PARTITION:
This will remove any temporary files that may be causing the problem, but will not delete your files or settings.
1. With the phone powered off, press the VOL DOWN KEY for 2-3 seconds then POWER key then release.
2. The device will display different BOOT OPTIONS
3. Use the VOL DOWN Key to SCROLL to Recovery and VOL UP Key to select
Tip: If the device reboots, you may have waited to long to make a selection, you will need to begin the process again.
4. The device will display the Motorola logo and then the Android in distress ( logo with Exclamation mark)
5. Press and hold the VOL UP key for 10-15 seconds. While still holding the VOL UP key tap and release the POWER key
Tip: You can try this step, holding the phone in landscape. If you are stuck on step 6, try a force reboot by pressing the Power key and Vol Down key, and start the process again.
6. The device will display additional menu options (Text will appear in BLUE)
7. Use the VOL DOWN Key to scroll to wipe cache partition and the POWER Key to select this option
8. The device will then perform the partition wipe
9. The device will reboot and start the normal power up sequence
Ever since it hasn't had any problems, but it's only been a few hours as well.

The force to 2.4ghz actually made the problem occur a lot faster, any reason it might be due to the massive amount of wifi networks around? When I set to scan 5 ghz there was only one still open, I might go into my router and see if I can change the atenna settings.
EDIT: Turns out if I go to 5 ghz my computer can't connect, but I changed the channel to something less populated in the area to see if that helps.
DOUBLE EDIT: It appears to occur after I'm supposed to get a Facebook notification, at that point I don't get any more notifications....attempting to clear out facebook data and cache to see if that does anything

You mean full reset? It looks like I may have to do that with the idle battery drain issue anyways....so that's the last resort.
Hey guys I'm having a similar issue with my moto x on the 2.4ghz band. Speeds are very slow and sometimes cut out completely. Im getting a download speed of about 300kb/s on 2.4 both on auto channel and it doesn't rlly change once I change it manually to an open channel using WiFi analyzer app. My download speeds on 5ghz hit 4000kb/s even with a much lower signal strength.
YouTube and Netflix is unusable and growing the internet sucks. I usually just use the 4g network while at home cuz its a thousand times faster but I'd like this to be fixed regardless. Has anyone found a solution or explanation?

Im getting a download speed of about 300kb/s on 2.4 both on auto channel and it doesn't rlly change once I change it manually to an open channel using WiFi analyzer app. My download speeds on 5ghz hit 4000kb/s even with a much lower signal strength.
YouTube and Netflix is unusable and growing the internet sucks. I usually just use the 4g network while at home cuz its a thousand times faster but I'd like this to be fixed regardless. Has anyone found a solution or explanation?

I'm having these issues too. Got the GSM Developer Edition on 11/29. It immediately updated to Kit Kat OTA so I'm not sure whether it had the issue prior to Kit Kat or not. This only happens on 2.4 ghz wifi and only with one of my routers at home, a Netgear WNDR3700v2 running OpenWrt Attitude Adjustment (I tried upgrading from Backfire to see if it would help, it did not). The other router is a Linksys WRT350N and when the phone is connected to that one the problem does not happen. Note, that there are 2 laptops, a Samsung Galaxy S2, and a Kindle Fire HDX that have zero problems with the WNDR3700. All can transfer data perfectly fine and at high speeds. Thus I do not think the router is bad. Have not checked work routers. 5 ghz wifi is totally fine and indeed very good with this phone.
For me, the problem is that the phone seems unable to receive data at high speed (over 1Mbps) on 2.4 ghz wifi in any area where the signal isn't perfect and sometimes even in the same room as the router (although usually it is fine there). Oddly in many cases when it has trouble receiving it can send data much faster. It almost seems like it might be some kind of interference as it is rather random.
At this point I'm wondering if the phone has a defective 2.4ghz subsystem, though that seem unlikely due to good transfer with the WRT350N, or if this is some kind of wifi tuning software bug in the phone.
Any info would be appreciated. Does anyone have this issue who did not have the issue on Jellybean? Am wondering if anything changed with wifi for the update? Note, I have tried clearing the cache in recovery as noted in another thread with no luck. Anyone have the WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini file from Jellybean for this phone? Would rather not reflash just for 1 file.
Thanks.

For what it's worth I have this same Netgear router and have had the same connectivity issues on both 4.2.2 and 4.4.
I did some reading today and found a couple possible fixes I plan on trying out. First one is to disable WMM. Secondly I found on the official netgear forums that they have had major issues (some of which you've described) with all firmwares ending in the .30s and went so far as to pull them from their download section.
My router was running firmware .36 and I successfully downgraded it to the latest stable firmware .12 that netgear now recommends.
Hopefully 1 of those 2 fixes improves the performance, at any rate I really think it's something with the router itself and not the moto x.

Thanks for letting me know this was also an issue on 4.2.2. Saves me the trouble of flashing back just to test.
I will be interested to know if your using official netgear 1.0.0.12 firmware fixes the issue for you. I haven't actually ever used the official firmware as I've run OpenWRT since I got the router a year or two ago. 10.03.1 had the issue, and it appears 12.09 does as well. I may try a trunk build at some point to see if that changes anything.
I had previously written that all was well on the 5 ghz band. This appears to not be 100% correct. Yesterday evening and this morning I found myself "connected" to the 5ghz band without actually having working internet. Toggle wifi on/off fixes it, but I shouldn't have to do it.
Not sure if this helps, but on the 2.4 ghz side things do work better on one side of the house vs the other. Also it seems that I can get a very fast connection at times and then it stumbles and gets stuck going under 1 Mbps. I still suspect either a defect or some kind of low level radio issues with the moto or the router regarding interference from neighboring wifi access points (there are a lot around me, single family houses on small lots). However, keep in mind no other device has these issues but the moto. In the rare instance I venture into a bad signal pocket the signal indicator goes down and speed slows or they lose connection vs the moto where it can show excellent signal and have no/nearly no connectivity.
I haven't tried it for long, but switching to wireless g mode vs ng may improve stability though I only briefly tried it. I did walk around part of my house checking the Mbps with the app "WiFi Speed Test" and while way slower than N mode it was far more stable. Even if this does work it is a definate downgrade in speed though.
Well its only been a day or two so it may be too early to tell, but so far my wifi seems much better after making those two fixes I mentioned above. This is on 2.4 band, the 5ghz band doesn't provide me enough signal strength to use all the time (router is too far from my bedroom).
The main issue I was having was my wifi signal would cut out even though it still showed a good connection. I could swipe down on the status bar and see no download arrow next to the wifi icon so I knew I wasn't receiving data. However a simple disconnect and reconnect to my wifi would fix the problem until it happened again. This seemed to be most common while watching YouTube videos, in fact it happened far too often which is why I went searching for a solution.
So as I mentioned things seem to be better for sure so far but I need to give it a week or so to see how much it is really helped, but so far I can't remember any wifi cutting out since I've made those two fixes.

Constantly having to reset WIFI - Hardware issue?

I thought this was a CM 10.2 problem so I reverted back to 10.1 final and am having the same issue. My Nook will display that it's connected to wifi but when I try to load anything I get nothing. The only way to solve it seems to be to turn wifi off and then on. When I let it sit for a while and come back to it I have to do the reset again. Is there something wrong with my hardware or is this a common problem? It's happening on two of my Nooks. Thanks.

If it does it on both CM10.1 and CM10.2, sounds like a router problem to me.

But why just the Nooks? Everything else is fine on my router to include two Android phones.

not sure but ya one of the wifi protocols maybe "N" is a problem if its enabled.
Do a google search for Nook HD+ wifi disconnecting and you'll find which one
you need to disable on your router.
Mine did that as well, so I disabled that one protocol and its been ok
ever since.
Or it's a CM problem. I switched to Carbon and the problem seems to have gone away. Disabling n is not an acceptable solution, at least not to me.

I tried assigning the Nooks a. Static IP but that didn't help. I suppose that I could bump my 2.4ghz network down to 54mps Max, but I dislike that solution.

Wifi disconnects
Was there a solution to this? My nook hd+ running CM11, version 11-20140403-NIGHTLY-ovation.
My Wifi disconnects intermittently. For example, I might be connected for 10 minutes, and then it just stops working. I have gotten used to having a terminal open pinging my gateway or AP. Latency is typically 2 to 4 ms, but jumps to 90, then 200, then timeout. I have to toggle Wifi or airplane mode to get it to reconnect.

As far as I know there isn't. I just updated past the April 13th cm11 build (which I thought I did before but didn't *smacks head into wall*) which fixes a wlan bug and am checking to see if that works right now as I have had the issue on two cm11 devices.
However, I noticed my wifi Access Point has been seeing power failures so unsure if that's related at this time.
I'm not sure of it being the router or ap as one device may be working while one won't be so its possible its cm.
It might be possible to use an app like 'wifi fixer' (I think it can do that) to automatically toggle wifi on/off, to fix it as a workaround. Not at that point in testing yet.

I have a similar problem with WiFi on my HD+ running CM 10.2.1, but not exactly the same. In my case, we have two wi-fi access points (i.e., two routers) in the house on different channels. I stay connected 100% on whichever I first connect with. But over time, the HD+ stops scanning, and doesn't see the other router. (Or the neighbors' wi-fis.)
I remembered seeing something about this with CM when I first joined the forum - the solution is to turn wi-fi off and then on. It rescans, and everything is okay again.
I wonder if it has something to do with the "Wi-Fi optimization" option, that "minimizes battery usage on Wi-Fi." But I haven't tried disabling that. Guess I'll do it now and report in a few days if it makes a difference.

Hmm, that is interesting. I have a single router but running two instances, a 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz band. Both have the same SSID and pass phrase. I just wanted to make it easier for systems that supported both bands to jump back and forth.
I think I will change the SSID of the 5Ghz band and make them truly separate networks.
Thanks for the feedback.
