Does anyone know how to use the stupid My Commute feature? Nokia definitely has the proper traffic info in the bay area, but when I enable My Commute, it gives me only one route and it's usually one of the worst ways to go. How do I get the multiple route options and live rerouting?
Also, is there no sound when using my commute???
So no one has used My Commute in the US... ?

Hey guys! New here, just got my Kaiser. And I apologize if this has been posted before, but I searched and found WAY to many results, and was having a hard time narrowing down.
Does anyone know how to use DIALUP on the Kaiser? I have my dialup number and set it up as a connection, but it always fails.
I was just curious to get this to work as I currently dont have a dataplan because most places I go have WIFI - cept to and from work, so it would be nice just to hop on and burn some minutes just reading the news.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Actually, since I am here I might as well post other questions that I have thought of:
Is there a way to use the GPS without paying a monthly fee VIA a different program? AND is a dataplan needed for that?
Is there a way to use my currently Motorola HS850 headset to listen to music, etc?
Is there away to have the alarm on the phone sound even if I have the phone on silent? I have always used my cells as my alarm clock, but I need to turn the ringer off at work, and sometimes forget when i get home.
Again, I apologize if any of these have been posted. But if someone is more familar with the search functions on this forum, hopefully you can direct me to the right place.
Thanks in advance!
from what i've been told Att disabled your ability to use dial up, so if you've got att service you're sol. if not then ya might get an answer from someone else...
gps you can use it over the net...but either you need a data plan or else pay per use on the net kb's...
i dont know what the hs850 is. however there are many adapters from mini usb to whatever. i just picked one up for mini usb to 3.5mm headphone jack/usb, works great.
Yeah. I just grabbed a USB off ebay!
I live waaaay, way out in the boonies, where I have no real way to get high speed internet at all. I realized that I could pay another 30 bucks a month for internet on the phone, but figured I'd get the same crappy, 56K BS that I'd always gotten out here.
And sure enough, run a simple speed check, I end up with 7.8K, not too shabby, and slightly better than I expected, but at least I had internet again. I go to start a file download after browsing for a while, and to my disbelief it skyrocketted up to 150Kbps, and I didn't quite figure understand how, until I researched just how fast HSDPA is.
Now! This is relevant, because the phone's comm manager only gives me the option of "3g on" and "automatic". Automatic only allows me to give the phone control over which signal it prefers, not the one I'm looking for intentionally. And when connected to an H-Tower with one bar, is still 6 times better than an E tower with three bars.
I'm trying to make it stay on an H-Tower no matter what. How do I accomplish this? Via a pay-program, or whichever.
Answered own question. here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2535996
Had to log in before I could search, and google brought up nothing, or else I would of asked. I'll leave it up so that maybe someone else who's searching the same way I had will find this.
Im getting some rather odd performance from the GPS..
I just got this thing out of the box, and know next to nothing about it.. so forgive me if this is a known issue or an easy fix..
I decided to mess with it a bit and went to "maps" and then "location" it puts me nowhere even near where I am..
so I tried "direction" and did "from my current location" to my office (4 miles away)
it cam up with sound direction, but when I started moving, it had my dot jumping all over the place. Showing me on one side of town, then 30 sec later 5 miles away..
I download an app that shows GPS status, and it shows good signal (7 satellites)
So, why is it behaving so wierd?
also, what are some other GOOD free navigation apps? I see many listed in the market, but I dont want to download them all, anyone have an opinion?
Do you have the GPS enabled in your settings?
G1 uses 2 ways to pin point your location:
1. Wireless networks (which I find never to be accurate)
2. Gps
Go to your Settings>> Security & Location
Try disabling your wireless and ONLY use GPS
Sorry but no good FREE Nav on the market yet, AndNav is still on the works for US

don't know how good it is but Nav4All i think it's called....i downloaded it this morning and i think it's a talkin nav cause you have to download the voice language you want to use. i haven't tried it yet but might be a good option
I saw TeleNav nominated as the best GPS navigation app by the Android Network. (this is their blog page where it is posted: http://blog.telenav.com/blog/2009/0...ne-vote-for-us-in-the-android-network-awards/). Should I get this service or is some other service like Google Maps available? Thanks for the help.

i use this... confusing at first but ya you can have the voice different ways. i gotta guys voice bc i have a feeling a girls voice will point me in the wrong directions...
The ONLY good nav program is copilot. All the others offload navigation to the provider's servers so require network connection and use up your data allocation - i.e. cost $$ to use.
If your location is jumping around by miles, then you are using cell tower location. It sets your position to the same position as the tower itself. GPS lock can sometimes take a long time. If the gps icon in the status bar is BLINKING or OFF, then you are definitely NOT getting a GPS position.

if you have unlimited data, you're ok with the others. I used nav4all before i bought copilot. copilot is MUCH better, but nav4all does the job well enough.

Absolutely not because you're tied in to network coverage.
Im planning on buying a HTC Hero but only if there is a gps tunr buy turn app with europe maps. So can anyone answer me?
I'm guessing you haven't tried Google Navigation yet ? There is a thread about using it in EU.
There are ALK CoPilot, Sygic Mobile Maps, NDrive and others. Of course they all cost money. They all work without internet connection since they store all map-data on the SD-card. There are also Navigation systems which depend on a data-connection, I don't know their names because I never cared about them.
Google Navigation, which ohgood mentioned, is free but not officially supported for Europe. It also has some flaws if used in this area. Of course it is one of those that depend on an internet connection.
O man i just saw google nav and i'm very sad to hear that you need internet con to useit coz trafic on gsm is expensive outside my country so its kind of useless 4 me.
It wouldn't matter anyway, Google Nav REQUIRES firmware 1.6+
http://www.andnav.org/
Dont know how good it is though, you will have to google some reviews.
I use Sygic in France, it works well for me. Trip calculation is a bit slow but otherwise it runs well.
I've used AndNav2 and Nav4All, both of them are free and very good turn by turn navigation, good interface and very accurate. Both needs internet connection because there's no (or little) map "buffering". I think you can use like a pre-route that download's some map information, but it still needs to connect to the internet to get more info.
Hey guys, first of all I love this forum and the people here. It's amazing the kind of apps and roms you guys come up with!
An easy question for most you is, what do I need to take advantage of GPS (if there is one) in XPERIA?
Hi angle180,
You don't have to use a dataconnection for using the GPS.
I use Sygic routeplanner in my car, without dataconnection.
And that worked fine, untill my X1 decided to stop working...
GPS is a simple antenna so the use of it is free.
Now some programs will require money to use.
but for example i use garmin xt for naivigation.
only thing to pay for is the software and any updates for said software.
With all the software making use of the GPS it makes phones with them built in super powerful.
I'm amazed that the use of GPS is free - i'm supprised they dont charge for it because its such a powerful tool!
check here for some more apps to use it (in case you missed the thread)
Thanks guys!
"I'm amazed that the use of GPS is free - i'm supprised they dont charge for it because its such a powerful tool!"
they can't
they can't detect you are using it
it's broadcast like radio your gps device don't send anything it get a "ping", signal with it's own location, from 3-more gps satellites which they keep broadcasting and thats all they do
it calculate where it is from those signals

not entirely true.
example sirius and XM can charge you for the service. same as Dish network and other sat services.
but they charge you based on your box's serial number or smart card accessing the database.
but blah thats another story.
and in my opinion, when they discovered gps they had no clue what they were sitting on. so they made it free.
just like they guy who invinted the hanger. imagine if he / she put a patent on the design.
