I bought a used Xperia Z. Under the flaps the water indicators look a little off white. They are not red by any means, they may even be the original color but I Have the white model so it's hard to tell the difference between the phone casing and the flaps.
So, my question is...when there is water damage, how red or pink do the flaps get? Is it really noticeable, or more of a slight off white?
thanks

They turn light pink, it should be easy to spot over the white surface.

Darn, I think one is pink. Does that mean the water resistance is uselss now? Or just a little compromised? I never intended to go underwater diving with it, but can it still stay out in the rain or withstand a drink spill?
Well, is hard to tell if the water resistance is compromised or not, but I think it will withstand a water spill or spray. Pressure underwater might be another story, water could force its way in if the flaps are faulty.
I had one that leaked. It's blood red.
Fortunately it isn't my fault that it leaked, so Sony exchanged a new unit for me
mine is slightly pink on the earphone port.
idk why lol. maybe it was raining and i was listening to music or something
My finger was once wet and I accidently touched the the thing while removing the phone from charging.. It quickly turned red.. In your case if that happened with the flap closed then there could be a problem with the flaps.. Personally I don't trust them.. The rubber beneath the earphones flap has started to tear on my z.. But water resistance is still fine..

Having the indicator red won't void the warranty. The Sony service center will check again to find the source of leak.

If you really intend to utilise the phones water resistance I recommend getting some Bluetooth headphones and using the official dock to charge. If you keep opening flaps when it isn't absolutely necessary, you will end up wearing them out.

Hi !
I'm kinda spooked about not getting my water sensor triggered when listening to music and it's raining . Does anyone know if the water sensor is also sensible to other things , like glue or something ? I was thinking to cover up that part with some scotch tape . Any other methods ?

Might pay to change your question,
The water resistance flaps that trigger the water resistance warning. Only once you uplug a device that was connected.
It is not a sensor as much as a hardware triggered event that the hardware was removed therefore a reminder that the flaps will still be open.
To prove this theory you can open and close the flaps all day and will not get any warning, the moment you remove the sdcard, headphones, charger the event will be triggered.
I don't understand what you are trying to ask, exactly.
as ojstagg pointed , under the flaps there are small white pieces of reactive paper . if they are touched by humidity or water , they get red => no more warranty . it's kinda stupid that they placed it NEAR the headphone jack and not inside...
Basically the sensors are there only to void warranty if the phone has water damage due to flaps being open at the time.
I have been using the xperia z with the headphone flap open in the rain, and the white strip is still white. I think colour would only change when submerged in water after a certain amount of time.
it's not a Tampax.
I think the sensor actually needs to soak in water for a certain period before it changes colour, however Iam not about to prove this theory.
Hoped I helped you to be at ease when listening to music in the rain................... I haven't have I?
Best thing for xperia z owners to do, is buy the Sony charging dock and that new Sony headphone Bluetooth thing. That way we would hardly ever need to open these flaps again.
If only they were f*****g available,

I don't think so . at least my old iphone 3gs got a drop of water on the sensor and bang , got red. Though you might be right ... and I could be another type of sensor :-s
Dock and Bluetooth headset is the only way.

Maybe you could ask the dude, that got drunk and was showing off his phone to his mates that forgot to put the flaps closed before dunking the phone
I also thought that.
My post Headphone water damage sensor
I know you've seen it but just an update that I'm currently using a small bit of tape to cover it that can be easily removed. I use my headphones a lot and all I needed was one drop of rain to land on it an there goes the warranty.
ok so the tape didn't interact with the white paper , right ? cool i'll cover it too then
As titled. I feel kind of cheated, as the water detection strip while underneath the flap but is not placed in a "fair" position, at least I don't think...
Long story short, the water detection strip next to the headphone jack is now red because I had the flap opened with the headphone plugged in and a bit of rain dropped onto the strip. It is a design flaw, at least in my eyes, as it is too exposed - should really have the strip INSIDE the headphone jack like the iPhone for fair water detection. Anyway, I'm not top pleased, and wondering if a bleach can help? Or any other methods?
Thanks in advance!!

Well i don't know, that's why I asked... was afraid it might turn black or something due to some special chemical reaction and was generally wondering if there're other methods of turning it back to white... :crying:

Really at the end of the day, as horrible as it might sound your warranty many be compromised already with the strip being any colour apart from white.
There is also the possibility that Sony have something similar inside the phone to detect water entering the internals

I would contact them and ask, they may be more understanding than you think and ask you to send it in and have it checked and strip replaced if it is ok. Try and phone, they tend to be less scripted etc (this is UK at least, don't know for other countries Xperia helplines).
take it to a small licenced warranty repair shop if there is any around your area.
My old school Sony Ericsson walkman was fixed when water damaged because they get more money from it being a warranty repair then just being paid for labour and parts..
You got it wet, it's fact.
But this does not mean they won't do a warranty repair.

Thanks for all the replies. Well, I tried, and the bleach turned it back to white
However, I wasn't being careful enough, as when I tried dipping a soaked cotton bud onto the strip, some of the solution went astray and may have came into contact with the copper-part of the earphone jack. Even after it had been dried out, the earphone jack couldn't detect my earphones anymore and playing music with my headphones in resulted in music playing through the phone's speakers instead.
Anyway, long story short, I thought I might as well bring the phone to the repair center and give it a go and see what they'll say. 4 hours later, they gave the phone back to me, with the earphone jack now working (all they did was update software to 253...), and said nothing about the phone being in contact with water. So....... kind of a success, I guess? What's bothering me now is still that I don't know why the earphone jack stopped working... It should be hardware-related, yet a software updated fixed it... hmmm....
They probably just replaced. the Jack and upgraded the software. to be sure

yeah, bleach works, tried it before, apply with q-tip
I read this few mins ago and now im scared about it.
...yes its water resistent but valid for few months.. because it has litmus paper in every port which after few months will become red on exposure to water even withall ports closed and once it gets red your warrenty will be void and then the phone camera will start getting moisture and your image will be blur and then the service people will tell you about litmus and will ask you 80% of the phone value for new phone even if there is small problem as it can't be open...
IS THIS TRUE?
My paper is red on headphone jack port.
It became red, but the times I washed my phone all the flaps were perfectly closed.
Maybe, its water resistant for some months because the flaps will become ruined..
Sent from my C6603 using xda app-developers app
All my papers are red too. I even had water in my camera. My back came off(just a little) due to Heath and when I washed it the water got it.
Everything is still working but all papers are red.
I'm gonna RMA the phone soon because of black dots in the camera. I wonder what they will say.

Sony Xperia Z > Xperia Z General > {DISCUSSION}Xperia Z back glass coming unglued
just read carefully from the first post what are people talking about and you'll find out by yourself for me, i tread the phone water resistant features as an insurance for such unexpectecd thing happens. also, some people suggest that you can make the litmus paper colored white again by cleaning it or rubbing it with cotton buds using a small amount of bleach,
uhmm...

Water came in, so basically no warranty
All the papers on my phone were red, still got my phone repaired for free, they test the seals and the flaps and if any of them are faulty they will carry out the repairs free of charge under the warranty.

Hi all !
I have my Xperia Z3 compact since 6 month, and i used it a lot in shower, i noticed recently that i had some condensation inside the camera, and that the humidity sensor located near the usb port flaps turned pink....
The problem is that i always took care of the flaps being closed, and i was always under the IP conditions ( no detergent, no high pressure, etc).
I checked the flaps, sealing seems completly untampered....
So, i want to send it back under warranty.. but i'm afraid it will come back with "you used it in wrong way, see, the sensor became pink...."
Any advice ?
Thanks

I had this problem, except I was only using in the rain, you can get the water out without sending it away (Using a hair dryer / airtight bag of rice) It seems like a lot of Xperia Z3C's are faulty in the "Water Proof flaps" part of the phone. If you send it away Son'y will do a pressure test to see whether it is their fault or yours, if you are certain that the flaps where entirely closed then give it a shot - it should be covered under warranty if you have it.
thanks for the reply man,
i have tried the pressure test (in hidden menu) , with flaps closed, when i squeeze the phone, the pressure rise, but go back to normal after a second, even if i keep squezzing it, does this mean the waterproofing is defective ?

According to some other threads the pressure should stay up when you press the screen in, meaning that the device is holding the pressure with no leaks, so most likely, yes it is defective. You can try send it in for warranty, as the pressure test that Sony does is basically the same but they use more advanced testing methods.

If you open up the sim card flap which is at the bottom flap (or the right flap if it is laying flat), there is a little square at the very right/bottom and it will either have a white square of paper or a pink/red square of paper inside that little square (the paper will be red / pink if it has been activated by water)

Hey guys,
so today i looked at my phone and the white rubber film isnt there anymore.
I looked left and right at the top speaker, but it seems to got off.
Is it still waterproof?
I'm kinda scared of problems now.
Should I try to find one of those film at ebay and replace it?
Greetz
There is no white rubber film on mine (black phone). Actually, there is nothing that would seem like rubber.
But as for the problem. Check if the pressure holds (read https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyXperia...c_owners_what_are_your_pressure_test_results/)
Also, do NOT ever assume that your phone is water proof. There are lots of reasons why the water can get into your phone even when it shouldn't. Assume that if you are lucky then heavy rain will leave your phone working.
But please, do protect anything that is electronic. Perhaps the smartwatch is almost water proof - phones with flaps - impossible.

my pressure is at 1012,40 milibar.
It doesn't change if I open the flaps tough...
also it doesn't change if i press on the screen.
If it doesn't change with flaps closed, then your 99% not waterproof anymore.
