If you were going to use a vivid purely for music in a car, airplane mode, no SIM card, etc, what rom would you choose and why?
Basically, imagine you have a vivid to turn into an android answer to the iPod touch.

ROM for audio
I don't know how much the ROM would actually matter. I am on stock ICS, using Viper4Android and the sound is really good.
I would likely use stock rom, root to either underclock or overclock (depending if I plan to use it mobile or just keep it stationary forever), grab a 3 female-1micro usb (if it even works on this phone) and then use one to charge, one to use a usb/bluetooth game controller/remote, and the last for a usb-hdmi out.
I just did this last weekend.
I unlocked the bootloader, a rooted, then after installing titanium backup i deleted all att and phone, sms apk's.
There is still a few things i need to work on but it is working just fine as an MP3 player for my daughter
Are you connecting to the car or other device? I ask, since UMS tends to be a problem on CM 10.1 and CM 10.2. 3.5mm should be fine.

Hey there fellows,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S I9000 that I've been using since Froyo. As an accesory, I've always used the Motorola S9-HD A2DP headset to listen to music and take calls wireless.
The thing is that ever since I've started flashing GingerBread ROMs (stock), it started to mess up.
Let's begin to enumerate the issues:
1) After having the device paired, simple turning the headset on wouldn't connect to the phone (as it worked before 100%)
2) With the headset turned on, if I go to the Bluetooth menu on the phone and "click" to connect, it would say connecting and one of this things would happen:
- "Connecting..." would display forever until I shut the BT radio off
- It would connect and immediately disconnect, even sometimes the headset shuts down too!
- It would connect to one of the profiles: the audio one or the headset one, but not both
- 1 out of 50 times it would connect to the audio profile online and finally be able to play music through them
3) While the headset is playing music (i.e. connected), I turn it off, and sometimes Android keeps showing the icon as connected, for like 10 minutes, until it eventually times out
As you might guess, I've been searching since this arised for a solution, comment, similar behavior reported from other users, etc, without luck; neither here at XDA, Google or other related forums. I've found some *similar* stuff like car audios disconnecting but finally they fixed them or were some issues with the car app or something, unrelated to this.
This started happening ever since the first GingerBread I've flashed; now I'm on stock JVS and the same thing still goes on. I've tried before flashing any kernels (as stock as it gets) and this happens too. I've tried after flashing pretty much every kernel (to see if they somehow fixed this) and the problem persisted.
Let me be clear the the headset works great; if I use it with another phone (Nokia) it doesn't present any of these issues; neither did here before GingerBread!
So far, the only remotely possibility to use it fine and that works 95% of the times is:
1) Erase the headset memory of paired devices
2) Erase the phone memory of paired devices
3) Pair the device
As you can imagine too, doing this EVERY TIME I want to use the headset is an awful lot of pain!
Well, thanks for your time and for reading so far... any kind of pointer, advices, consolation that you can provide would be more than thanked for!
Best regards,
Anyone?
sorry no solutions from me.....but I did incur a similar situation when I flash jvq stock (music player would stop playing music and make bootanimation sounds)before flashing over to re by darky.....since being on darkys the problem has gone.maybe try a custom rom!!!

That's a good thing I didn't try! I refrained from flashing a Darky because all the "extra" steps involved besides directly flashing the files from Odin and also the auto voodoo lagfix kernel that converts unless you put the files to NOT to on some directory... plus the "bloated" experience over a stock ROM.
I think I should try one though, and also think that the BT should work OK in stock too! First I'd like to confirm if it's a "known" issue with the Ginger ROMs or not...
Anyway, thanks for your advice, might flash Darky soon!
its amazingly easy to do...just follow the guides to the word.....

I flashed Thriller before being able to test the bluetooth on the stock rom, but I've noticed when I'm connected to my Kenwood Deck's bluetooth in my car it's really hard to understand people half the time, their voices just have a staticy distorted noise.
I'm unsure if it's my phone, the rom, or just something I need to change in the settings. There's the possibility it's my car deck but I never had these problems with my previous phone on bluetooth.
Why don't you flash to stock, see if it makes a difference.

Bluetooth issues are the reason my signature doesn't say "Sent from my LG Thrill Faux G" anymore.
I could never find a Bluetooth fix that lasted longer than a week. Stock or Thriller. Doomed Froyo was after I left, but its based on Thriller so I doubt its different.

I would but I don't wanna erase everything and start over again. This is my first Android phone so I'm gonna ask a noob-like question here, but is there a way I can backup my phone as it is right now, flash AT&T stock, then flash Thriller again and restore the backup?

So your bluetooth also sounds distorted like mine? Are you using it over car speakers or a earpiece?
And it's still not fixed yet for you?
You can make a Nandroid back up in CWM, it will backup your entire phone, Apps, settings, everything. Then you can restore in CWM.
I wasn't having that specific problem, but remember a ton of posts about car Bluetooth issues. They never found fixes.
My issue was with a stereo Bluetooth headset. From what I understand they (stereo headsets and the car audio) both use A2DP to transfer data. My headset would drop its connection, and button presses no longer registered. If I was listening to music and a call came in, even if I didn't answer, I would lose the media connection. I would have to turn off the headset, turn off Bluetooth on the phone (sometimes at this point my phone would freeze and require a battery pull), then turn Bluetooth back on, and finally my headset back on.
My phone did this on stock, then I flashed Thriller and it stopped ... for a week. I reflashed Thriller and got another week.
This was the point when gtg bounced, and I had 3 days to exchange my Thrill. I had to choose: warranty swap the Thrill and risk issues on the new one (as I was not the only one with that issue) or swap for the Galaxy S II.
I have no doubt the Gingerbread update will fix this, plus battery issues. But, the update that was promised in October for the unbranded version was pushed to December, and the ATT version has no estimate what so ever.
If you have time to return for another device I say jump. If not I would keep getting warranty replacements through att. If enough come back with issues that might give some pressure to get the GB update pushed.

I love this feature of clockwork. So much better than the methods of flashing roms on my WM phones back in the day.
I actually ended up testing a bluetooth call on a friend's LG Thrill unrooted with the att rom still on it, and the crappy distorted bluetooth was there on his as well! Theres a possibility its a compatibility issue with my deck and this type of bluetooth but im not sure what it is yet..
i've upgraded my phone, so i'm using my captivate for games and music. i'm looking for a ROM that supports usb audio out so i can use an external dac, if there is one available. my phone is stock rooted, but i don't mind flashing a ROM. if there's a way to exclude the radio. a ROM without a radio or a way to remove it would work as well.
thanks!

Leave your phone in airplane mode if you don't wanna worry about the radio (modem).
I believe stock ROM with Google music would work for usb audio out. I haven't used it in a while but it worked on my car stereo. Also, keep in mind that not every sound system will recognize your phone with USB in, especially the older ones.
Greetings,
I'm new to modding but not Android. I have had android phones for since the Droid X was new. I had rooted it on froyo, but lost root with the GB OTA and didn't bother to go further. The Droid X has been retired, though I have thought of playing around with it, just because it's sitting in a drawer. Recently as my Droid 4 (my upgrade from Droid X) ages, I was motivated to get back into it and try some custom ROMs. Just by lurking and reading this and similar forums i was able to successfully Root, Safestrap, and flash to CM 10.1 stable, then on to 10.2 and 11 nightlies... Also i was able to Unlock BL, set up custom recovery, and flashed CM 11 to my Nexus 10 all without asking a single question! All is great, I love Cyanogenmod, but... The ONE thing I miss from stock is the car dock app for the official Motorola vehicle dock. Obviously that is long gone unless I want to SBF (I don't), but I am looking for a replacement app.
And here is where I am stumped... For my Droid 4, I have tried many of the dock apps on the play store (including CarHomeUltra, which I see everyone recommend) but have not found something that does what I want. I have not found an app that can launch simply by being placed in the dock, this was a nice feature of the stock Moto app. Also, the original app routed phone audio through the usb connection, where a special cable split off to an aux out plug and a standard usb charger. Since i do not have bluetooth in my car, only Aux in (which I hacked into my stock radio), I am looking for an app that can route the audio through USB correctly. Since this is so device/accessory specific, I have a feeling that such an app probably does not exist? I guess I am wondering if the Motorola Vehicle mode APK is available so I can sideload it... For now I am using bluetooth headphones in the car, but that is not ideal especially when I have passengers. As a workaround, I have also looked at Bluetooth to Aux out adapters, but if I can get free software to fix the issue, that would be preferable.
So, long question short, for those running custom ROMs on Droid 4, what are you using for a car dock?
TIA
Droid 4 Rooted, Safestrap, triple boot: Stock 4.1.2, CM 10.2 RC, CM 11 Nightly (4.4.2)
Nexus 10 Unlocked, CWM, CM 11 M-1 (4.4.2)
Nexus 7 (2012) Stock 4.4 (kids' tablet)
I too am running into the same problem you are. I have two vehicles setup with cradles I just drop my phone in and play pandora , no hooking into the headphone jack. It sucks none of the kitkat roms or jellybean mods with the exception of myfishbear's eclipse rom can support the dock. I have been running this rom for about the last year and it recognizes when you dock the phone. I have been doing a lot of experiments with copying files such as carhome.apk or carhomegoogle.apk. It seems the APK launches the car cradle program , but there is some other file either a library or another file that detects the dock. I removed all the carcradle apks and dock apks in the eclipse rom to see if it would kill the ability to detect the dock, but when i plug it into the dock it orients the screen to landscape and the audio still plays through USB like it is supposed to. I really would like to transition to 4.4.2 but until someone can figure out the dock situation I am going to be keeping eclipse for a while.

I haven't heard of that ROM, it's JB? How does it compare to CM?

I played around with this too, but didn't really get anywhere. Unless I was reading old news, I think that the carhomegoogle was recently put up on the play store but doesn't support any devices? With all the new google apps hitting the play store, it looks to me like google is trying to fight fragmentation by pulling some system apps out of the OS and make them able to update independently... Maybe carhomegoogle being on the play store hints at an upcoming update? At least that's what I'm hoping for...
Just to close this out and update where I ended up with this. After playing around with ROMs on my manta and maserati and learning some more, I've got it worked out pretty comfortably. Once the power cord portion of the proprietary cable gave up the fight, I broke down and bought a Bluetooth to aux adapter and I can still charge in the dock with a standard cord. I'm not using a car home app at all anymore. Instead I've setup the first home screen to the right as a car home with dialer and hangouts in the (other) dock. I'm finding Waze fun so I just launch from my homescreen. I use the stock clock/weather and the Pandora widget. That really fills all my needs driving. Now my totally custom car home is just a flick away.
As far as rotation... I found two apps on the play store, Ultimate Rotation Control and Rotation Locker with some help from G+ communities. UCR lets me switch between auto and forced auto manually with a widget or in the notification shade. Rotation Locker can force rotation and has a plug in for tasker. I'm close to where I want to be, but I really want global auto and forced rotation automatically triggered when my phone is docked. I don't have the time to invest in learning tasker right now. But I plan on using the Bluetooth and charging triggers to change the setting in these apps or maybe I can find something in frameworks? Either way, I gotta be strict with my time, I'm getting a little obsessed here. If I do figure that out I'll edit this post.
Anyway, maybe that will help somebody some day.

I'm sorry to hear there isn't really a good option for continuing to use my car dock's usb audio feature in any of the ROMs I want to use... Hopefully one day :-/
Going to take a quick look at myfishbear's eclipse rom but I'm not going to expect much :-/
Hello everyone,
I have an old HTC desire 510 running stock 4.4.2 version 1.19.661.4. I am having some car issues, have an ODB scanner plugged into my car and using Torque Pro on my phone to connect to it through WiFi. This phone will always remain in my car, i will use it to monitor my car (speed, fuel usage etc). It will be running in real time. But i have been noticing some lag when the app is reading the information so i was wondering what ROM would be the best to use in this situation where i will only be using one app on my phone. Don't need to use any other app, not even messaging or email. I need a heavily debloated ROM I guess? 32bit? 64 bit? Maybe a custom kernel too? I don't mind rooting.
Any suggestions?

I actually gave my Desire to my sister, but when I did use it I really liked Cyanogenmod on it. The cameras don't work but it sounds like what you're using it for doesn't require any cameras. I'd go with CM 11 because 12.1 has a wifi bug so it'd restart everytime you loose your connection to the network (So everytime you turn off the car ). Cyanogenmod is nice and lightweight, and you can customize it to your liking.
As for the kernel, I didn't really experiment a lot there so I can't help much.
Btw you can't just choose a 32 or 64 bit OS, it has to be compatible with the phone. The International version is 64 bit, and you need a 64 bit os with that, the US version is 32 bit, and you need a 32 bit os with that.
Revmod ROM with pattiboii's kernel is what i'm currently messing around on. TWRP for recovery is very useful on this phone. Also linux on this computer made fastboot 100x easier than on windows.
Most people use these devices for wifi and mp3, basically an ipod. And Revmod has viper4audio GLITCHY with DOLBY bass boost, but working somewhat with headset, havn't had a chance to bluetooth with it much, but will in a week or so after i have my headset.
So, i've decided i'll get viper4audio working on a kernel, notcwmod. Also, revmod gives me about 800ish MB of storage after gapps and everything, so it's a great one to build off of. . . wish i had a source, for the ROM, but i do for a couple kernels
Oh well though, i'll figure it out, and probably in a month or two you'll see a finished ROM on here, but can't test service, as this one doesn't have service.
