I was going to wire tether and I plugged it up via the stock USB cable that came with it and all the sudden it started smoking and I unplugged it and my charger port is ruined. So has this happened to anyone? I just had a mouse plugged in the same port and it was working fine! So anyone have this happen to them? Also how can I do warranty? My boot loader is unlocked and says tampered cause I'm running a ROM.
I have AT&T but that forum is not as big as this section so I`d post it here.
Edit anyways I called AT&T they sold me Since what had happened I need to call HTC and they will repair it. Will HTC care that its bootloader unlocked and tampered? even though its a physical hardware issue with the phone? or should I just sell it for parts and use an upgrade.
i'd send it to HTC and relock the bootloader. hardware-issues usually should be repaired even with tampered flag.
if you have enough energy left and really want to be save, use s-off, lock your bootloader, remove tampered flag and go back to s-on.

Just curious. Are you on a ROM that enables fastcharge? I did read a discussion between CM devs about rarely burning the port with fast charge enabled be default and connecting to a faulty USB port.
I'm guessing it's because USB 2.0 supports an output of max 500mAh.
If your phone tried to draw more than that it put pressure on the port which caused it to cease working properly.

Did they fix it or just send a new or referb one?
Also do you think they would charge for such repair? cause she said they may want to charge.

in my case i think they've send me a new one, but because i've unlocked my bootloader before, they transfered my IMEI to the new device. because my bootloader was still "relocked" after repair, but the devices case and screen were completely new (no more scratches and 2 dead pixels were gone.. lucky punch ;D )
edit: can't say, but they didn't charge me because it was obviously a hardware-failure that was not in a relation to the software.. this is an important point.. they will only charge you if they can be sure that the hardware got damaged due to your installed software (like overclocking your cpu etc.)

UPDATE!: So I called AT&T they are going to warranty it. I`m going to run it completely dead so that maybe hopefully they WONT see my unlocked and tampered bootloader.
They wont charge for that will they if they see that?
Anyway I plugged up my Samsung Charger from my parents S3 and BAM my phone started smoking so I wonder why or what is causing that cause its certainly the phone.

I just bought an 8925 a couple of weeks ago (about a year used) and it was working fine...Best phone I've had so far...Yesterday I'm sitting in my car, I start the TT software and drive off. As I'm driving off I plug the phone into the car charger and pouf! Phone just blacks out. No lights no nothing. I tried to plug the phone into a wall charger, data cable, car charger, nothing. No light, no sign of life at all...
I also had just purchased a new battery for it, tried it and still the same, nothing at all....Suggestions ???????? PLEASE !!!!!!
What kind of car charger do you have? There are reports that if you use a cheap, generic charger it may fry your phone.

THIS ONE. If it is fried, what can I do ? I mean, I'm sure I can't do much about the phone itself but can I maybe go after CellularAccessory.com ???
Good luck...
It's indeed highly recommended to only use HTC car chargers, there have been many reports of similar cases.
I dont think you are gona have much luck trying to go after the place you bought the charger from they usually have disclaimers about damage caused by anything they sell. If the phone truely is dead and going on your description you have probably fried components on the board, is to try claming on your household contents insurance just say it went pop when you plugged it in at home using your htc charger. Failing that if your phone is still under waranty then try the place you bought it from. DONT say you used a non branded charger though or you are screwed lol. Good Luck.

Damn, paid $3.95 for a multipurpose car charger and it fried your Tilt. I can't imagine that. I'd be p*ssed.
take it to att and see if its still in warranty and get a new one..if its out of waranty then call htc in usa and it should still be covered (manufactures warranty is 15 months). Htc devices are the most knoqwn swapped out phones with warranty exchanges..its very simple..ive exchanged my tilt 4 times now. I dont even break a sweat if something even SEEMS wrong..i used to freak out and try to fix things myself but i eneded up doing more damage than needed and luckily att is so nice and understanding..i just emediately take it in and get a new one now..even if something doesnt feel right..if need be i throw it in boot loader mode and say it wont boot.
It probably should be noted that nobody is suggesting you defraud HTC or AT&T on an open forum, especially senior members. Since your device is regulated by the FCC and it would probably make it a Federal offense, I think I would stick to the basics in any discussions with everyone. If they don't ask, fine, If they do ask then use your own judgment.

I will definately try that, but my only concern is that it's an unlocked att phone that I'm using in Montreal, Canada...Should I go to HTC Canada or USA???
Just tried calling HTC North America (the # that's on their website (425) 679-5318) and it just answers but with no sound at all..It's like if someone picks up the phone but it's just muted....I waited around 3 minutes thinking someone would probably end up answering, but no...
just take it into an att device support center (look on there site or call them) and just tell them it wont turn on..its not defrauding them its honest..as ling as its not PHYSICALLY DAMAGED (as in mving parts were damaged by dropping or mishandling) or WATER DAMAGED (as in the white square on the back is pink) then your good..This happened to me the frst time..i left it on a charge all night and next morning it wouldnt charge nor turn on and att took it with ease.
Wow, a three dollar car charger that is multipurpose for a several hundred dollar device.....the real question is...why? Before you ever plug anything into an electronic device please, please check the output voltage and amperage, a lesson to all.
Ok I was finally able to reach the repair dept. at HTC. They told me the phone is still under warranty so I sent it to their repair center in Indianapolis in the hopes they will be able to exchange it...
I do believe the phone is completely fried, but is there a way for them to still detect what caused it to fry ? Also, they told me that any third-party application they find on the phone voids the warranty, will they be able to see what was installed on the phone ??

If the phone is fryed I doubt they will be able to get it working thus they wont be able to see whats been installed on it and anything could have fryed it such as a power surge while it was plugged in at home. Just wait and see i guess.
once they take it apart they will be able to figure out the problem. sometimes not easy .

Ok so a couple of weeks back my HTC one running ARHD (cant remember what version) was running low on battery. So I plugged it into a charger only for it to start smoking from the port. I quickly pulled it out but it was ruined from that point on and wouldn't charge. Anyway. I went into my carrier shop (EE in the UK)and they sent it off for me. However HTC didn't fix it because I had "installed unlicensed software on it". from my perspective I fail to see how running a custom ROM can cause my phone to basically set itself alight. Have I got any leg to stand on or am I ****ed ?
Help please guys.

Did you receive your phone back? If doing repair to the main board it is most likely that the warranty is void. The usb port is soldered on the main board. The main board also contains information on a chip which stores the bl and secure flags (bootloader lock and security lock)
If you got your phone back send it to a different shop and see what happens... (some service centres are dumb)
However my tip would have been s-on and locking boot loader and flash ruu, but your port is dead
You can however download a flashable RRU in zip format and install it in boot loader (if you have low battery, dont bother as it will break the phone)
You can talk about customer rights but you are warned at the unlocking process it may void warranty.
My tip is research online what others did to get it sent.

The problem is that it has no battery left what so ever. I can't do anything to resolve the situation from my end. I am reliant on them fixing something that is their fault.
As for taking it to another shop, well I'm in London so I imagine they send them all to the ashfield in kent centre. I could try I suppose.
They rejected it because of your custom ROM having a Kernel that might have affected the top limiting current input of the charger.
Its unlikely that actually caused the short but its still a valid reason for them to void the repair.
The reality of it is its pretty well known that anytime you start to flash custom roms and modify your phone from original manufacturer specs you are running the risk of them voiding warranty of something were to happen. In your case something did happen and as a result they were able to use that against you.
Also im not sure why your reliant on them fixing something that is their fault? How did you come to the conclusion it was their fault?
You did modify the phone with custom software.
Did you also investigate if the charger was manufactured properly. You left out details like it being the factory HTC charger that came with it or an after market one.
Just saying. Take some responsibility. Had you NOT put a custom rom on there and modified the phone would you in fact be in the position to have the repair rejected? Would the unit have burned up like it did? We will never truly know but unfortunately Manufacturers have to cover their butts because so many people out there modify their phones and break them and try to send them in to get fixed for free when the manufacturer did nothing to actually cause the unit damage.
If the phone was completely dead, how did they determine the phone had unlicensed software on it?

I was under the impression that ARHD used the stock kernals ?
As for their fault its a hardware failure, that is very very unlikely to have been caused by a custom ROM.
As for the charger it was the one that came with the phone.
Hey everyone
So, I have a bit of a problem... My HTC One keeps destroying every charger cable I'm using, sooner or later. I've tried about 5 or 6 different chargers, including 3 original chargers, and as you might understand this is getting pretty expensive (especially as original chargers are priced around 20.- in Switzerland).
I'm gonna spare you the details, but there are a few things that might be interesting to anyone who wants to help.
The progress is always the same: First, the phone is charging only when sth. is weighing the connector down (this is something many of my HTC One-owning friends are complaining about, too). Next, the phone will charge only when the cable is bent behind the back of the phone. This will work for some time, until the phone refuses to charge when plugged into the wall and can only be charged by trickle charging it from a USB port (which is what I'm currently doing). Here, the cycle is repeated, only that this time the cable dies entirely.
Curiously enough, this happens with every charger and, as it seems, the deterioration quickens with each new cable.
Also, what usually happens pretty quickly is that the connector doesn't lock into place anymore. I have cleaned the port multiple times following instructions from Youtube videos, but to no avail.
Since my phone is rooted, I unfortunately can't just go to my provider and ask them for a new phone. They'll probably blame it on the software or whatever... Also, I recently dropped my phone and it left a few scratches on the top, which would void my warranty even if the rooting wouldn't already have done so. Just my luck, I suppose...
Hopefully anybody has a similar problem or a suggestion. Lemme know if you do!

Use this Guide to return to Stock and do a warranty replacement
It looks like you have 2 problems. The first one is the microusb port has been damaged. This has happened to me on another phone and it would explain why the wire is sliding out. For this reason, you might consider replacing it under warranty. The second problem seems to be tension in the charging wire. I do not know how you have charging setup, but I am guessing that the outlet is far away and you are stretching the cable to make it to the phone. This could cause the wire to have discontinuity (why you have to bend it to short the discontinuity and resume charging) and the microusb port to get damaged. I would recommend getting a longer wire if this is the case.

ok, where did you buy if from ?
I bought it at Microspot and they replaced it twice...
Both times, I was S OFF, LOCKED Bootloader and stock recovery using a RUU...
The second time I even had a "bülä/näggi" on my phone... they replaced it on warranty...
I had the purple tint camera issue D:
Re: HTC One eats charger cables
Thanks for your response
I bought it at the Orange store in Winti, but if you get any helpful advice or in this case even a new device always depends on the clerk...
Also, I'm kinda worried how they would react to the fact that I noticed the issue already months ago.
Anyway. I'll wait until my current cable breaks down, too. Perhaps in the meantime somebody else has an idea

they won't notice it but you need some good argument's that this issue isn't caused by software... first go back 100% stock using this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2541082
and then test if your phone still eats these cables..., return it to the shop...
use these arguments to convince them if they don't wanna replace it:
I hope you can do something with these informations and if they want to charge you - or even to be prepared - I have a few examples how you can convince HTC that this issue is not caused by you and that this is covered by warranty.

Try to give them your perspective!
This is almost everything. Be rethoric(Ask questions so that they must answer Yes! Ask questions that already include the answer) For example, Isn't it ridiculus and totally against every logic thinking that you say a unlocked bootloader is the cause of a sunk powerbutton?
As long as they are humans, they have to say, yes... this is the only answer... otherwise they would be ridiculus.

My HTC One died on Saturday for no apparent reason whatsoever, it was a T-mobile HTC one with the RUU conversion to GPE. I was watching Netflix it on saturday noon and the battery was about 50% and the phone restarted for no reason or error.
Later that day around 5pm I wanted to use the phone and it would not turn on, I thought that the battery could be dead so I set it to charge, but the LED would not turn on on the charger or computer, so I figured the battery was probably completely drained. I let it charge all night and next morning the LED still was not on, so I tried to boot the phone and nothing, I used power + volume down, and not even the bootloader would come up. I tried ADB and nothing.
After reading some info online and XDA I noticed that a lot of people are experiencing the same issue, would this be related to unlocking and rooting the GPE RUU?
Similar Issues:
HTC one won't turn on, No LED, no flashing Home/Back button

Im sorry to tell you this, but Qualcomm HS-USB is USUALLY a sign of a hard brick. In other words, you cannot get the phone back to life.
The only possible way of recovery of this device is to send it to HTC. They will replace the motherboard, which costs a BOMB. If im not mistaken, its about $200.
Ideally, you should avoid RUU conversion unless ur 100% sure about what you're doing. Flashing ARHD 6.1 or SinLess would have been a much wiser thing to do IMO

Most likely not. they will send you a refurbished device.

This is t-mobile-restriction ****. With other phones there were less or no problems. Better to buy a not branded phone.

I wish they had the GPE when I bought mine 9 months ago. A friend will sell me his HTC one AT&T black edition for $250, would that be a better option to Flash or should I forget about it and get a Nexus 5?

The international unlocked is simply THE BEST for such things. If you want the best developer support, its the Dev. edition or International Unlocked

Thank you for the link, looks like I'm not the only one with the issue, but I tried all the solutions and still won't boot up or the LED will come up.
T-mobile is sending me a replacement, the bad news is that even thought I really like the phone I will be selling the replacement and moving to the nexus 5 as tmobile takes forever to release updates.
Hi.
Well this is a longer story. I try to tell the thumbnails.
The phone got (ocean) wet but didn't show problems for about a week or two then it stopped charging "normally" meaning charging got very slow and drained fast. Figured it was the little usb panel on the bottom. I ordered new one but putting it back together a screw stuck between the battery and the metal backplate. Pretty lame huh? I disassembled it fast so I thought sigh no problem. (the battery was on fire after i got it out and threw it on the ground in anger)
So I bought a new - not original - battery too. All ran fine again like it was before.
Then suddenly The phone turned off and looked like it was a bootloop.
Here's the interesting part because I don't remember if I already unlocked and put custom recovery / image on the phone before or only at this ponint. Mark this point.
After this, the phone only turned on while on the HP laptop's usb port with the little thunderbolt on it. Must have some tremendous juice or something. The phone shows 0% drained, not charging.
I switched cables, the usb part and battery again but still the same with both batteries, cables etc. Factory reset naturally.
My question is basically if this can happen because of a faulty/bad version/whatnot bootloader (I think i use TWRP) or this is a motherboard failure then? I don't have a HP laptop and have to search for one in case you say it does worth a try.
Thanks
Get it to service center asap

did you read the whole post? it's unlocked, modified, was taken apart, parts exchanged.
if there was a warranty on it, that'd been the first thing i'd done. naturally.
thanks anyway

I am saying this because I think it may be a hardware problem. Did you try the test method?
