[Q] Screen resolution / viewport adjustment - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I just have a general question about the on screen display of the HTC one. I'm using HTC ROM 4.2.2; not rooted (I do not plan to root in near future since this device is brand new...)
I know this device is 4.7" with 1080p resolution, but currently the on screen display bugs me a little.
As pictures are better than words in most cases I've made screenshots of three different devices.
I know that's 7" to 4.7" to 3.7" , but somehow I can't understand why I am seeing on my 1080p HTC One almost as less as on my HTC Desire Z!? I excepted at least a viewport similar to the the Nexus 7.
On the other hand, if I view websites I'm almost on par with my Nexus 7; yes I have to zoom in a little to read those medium/tiny letters, but that's given...
Well, to make long things short: is there a (hidden) option somewhere deep in the maze of menus which adjusts me (at least) the mail app?! I've tried to change all "font size" settings I've found but with no actual success.
Btw. I'd like to keep the stock email app... since I don't need more functions or stupid ad-banners when using 3rd party mail apps.
Thank you!
Kind regards,

Ok, just found out that this seems to be a HTC bug... though, gmail app renders the same html mail as expected (say:complete without scrollbars, but still readable in terms of font size )... So I thought to seek and install the stock email.apk since this was doing good on the N7... partly a success...the mail is at least readable in landscape view (just scrolling vertically..), in portrait mode it is a bit smaller than in the HTC mail app (still no satisfying font size)... I conclude that there must be a global setting somewhere... which affects the email apps html renderer....
(just talking to myself )

Multi-touch on Nexus One

I'm considering a N1 but from what I heard from reviews, it doesn't support multi-touch out of the box (stock)
What are the necessary things to do to enable multi-touch?
Supports pinch to zoom and other similar gestures, not multi-touch. Yes, it is out of the box.
it DOES support multi touch out of the box. just search. pinch to zoom, web browser, pictures, etc all works just perfect. it just cant do 3 points or more.
Alright...so two-finger gestures are available out of the box
How above pinch and pan in Google maps? Or just pinch to zoom is supported?

Flawlessly is a stretch, but yes it works for basic tasks.
Yeah, the implementation in google maps is sub-par. it always scales from the center of the screen not the median pinch point. This is much more obvious in Froyo due to the nice fade between map zoom levels (finally!) The browser implementation is good though.

The action of pinch to zoom creates a "center point". Move close to the center point and it zooms out, move further away and it zooms in.
Up until recently the coding for pinch to zoom always put the center point in the center of the screen, regardless of where your started the pinch action.
This creates a little bit of a mental disjoin. The latest coded for mutli touch in android addresses it and puts the center point in between the two input points.

Agreed. Sometimes it does work flawlessly, other times not so much...

In Froyo the center-point is between your fingers and not in the middle of the screen and it feels much more natural. In addition the "Pinch-to-pan" API has been added to the 2.2 SDK which allows the iPad-like maps natigation that I think the OP is referring to. I would be surprised if that wasn't in maps for the official Froyo drop.

You won't tell the difference.
People just like to complain a lot. I'm playing several games from Gameloft which have joystick/buttons on the same axis on the screen, and it works 100%.
Pinch to zoom is not on the same axes (usually), so it's irrelevant.
Don't even worry about it.

Not quite right. The currently available froyo build does scale the current map image based on the center of your pinch point _but_ as soon as you release it "re-applies" the zoom you just requested as if you was performed at the center of the screen. Though this may be a side effect of having no pan-while-pinch in maps.
Though I agree that it may be corrected for the official Froyo release
Pinch to zoom and pan is implemented in the gallery in froyo. But that's the only place. Its not great, no where near as on the iPhone.

Agree. And that's the one and only one reason I'm also considering iPhone4
Hi guys - sorry to hijack this thread slightly
I've just got a HTC Desire which I'm really happy with but the inability to zoom in properly in google maps is really doing my head in
I'd made a post to the official google help forum for maps but haven't got a response.
From your posts can does this mean this is an underlying deficiency within Android, rather than the Maps app?
The current behaviour is that during the action of zoom, the screen does correctly pan to the centre point of my pinch action (which would suggest to me it is capable of following where I want to be) However, as soon as you take your fingers off the map re-draws based on the original centre point. It makes maps practically unusable as you constantly have to re-centre the screen, and unless you're absolutely spot on anything but a gradual zoom throws you completely off where you thought you were. In fact it would be better if it didn't follow your finger point at all and simply zoomed in to the centre like the buttons do - at least you'd be able to follow it.
Obviously there's nothing I can do about it but I just wanted to clarify if this is something that might get fixed in another maps build or an underlying deficiency in the Android hardware or APIs. (I've got another 8 days in which I can take the phone back)
Seems that you're all taking about 2.2 builds having this behaviour but as a stock HTC Desire user I'm on 2.1 and have the same experience so it doesn't seem like any improvement from the new android
Thanks

im on stock froyo frf91 and youre right on point about pinch in google maps, its unbearable. Especially compared to the stupid f*****g iphone. Its a google os yet its maps app works horrible compared to google maps on the iphone. If you pinch less than half way, it just bounces back out to where you started, hysterically cheap. And everytime i pinch further it just keeps zooming to a different point, then of course it has to load a new image. If you notice, it never stays at the zoom level its on when you remove your fingers, it changes a lot. Its really bad ive complained before but i thought i was the only one.
I guess with just a couple people noticing how bad it is we shouldnt be holding our breath for improvement. But yeah its pretty surprising after using the iphone, you'd certainly think google would be more interested in making google maps a really smooth, solid, reliable application since its one of the most popular if not the most popular application. My iphone-owning friend used it the other day during a trip and completely gave up and we used his old ass iphone 3g it was drastically more smooth and enjoyable than my superphone
Back on original topic - N1 has dual-touch, not true multi-touch. This is pretty much irrelevant except for a few key points:
1) Palm rejection is not as good (you have to be a bit careful how you hold the device or it will use your palm as an input)
2) You can't use more than two fingers
3) "Axis snapping" - coordinates are reported separately as 2 X's and 2 Y's. Since there is ALWAYS a delay between the first and second finger press - even if it's only a few milliseconds - the phone can simply "pair" the coordinates on touch. However, if you cross the X or Y axis of the other input, you have a 50% chance of the phone mixing them up.
I've never run into problems 2 or 3, personally, and I DO game quite a bit on my phone. 1 is a simple adjustment issue, and the way you need to hold it comes naturally after a couple of weeks of use.

[Q] Gmail font size

Ok..so I've had the Captivate for 3 weeks and have put it through the paces..besides a few items I can live with, the one that is a HUGE issue is the font size in the gmail application. I visited my daughter and played with her Iphone and it baffles me how the Iphone can pinch to zoom in and out in the gmail app, and an android device like the Captivate cannot (AFAIK at least). There's a LOT of folks on this forum..surely someone has come across a solution for this? If you're in your mid 50's it is a big issue..maybe the target demographics for this phone indicated a "who cares" on the part of Samsung & ATT, but it's a shortfall IMO

I'm pretty sure we can't pinch to zoom in our Gmail app but you can increase the font size. Keep in mind that the gmail app is now (Android 2.2+) download-able through the market so hopefully we'll get an update to allow pinch to zoom.

I think those options are only with 2.2, the 2.1 firmware don't have those functions.

good google reader app?

Hi, I have rooted nook touch and now want to find a handy google reader app.
I have tried the following apps:
newsrob: This is the app that is closest to what I want except that the cons is unacceptable.
pros: font is large and clear. plenty of configurable functions (sync, display, etc.)
cons: no on screen pagedown/up button and the page scroll is very unresponsive. Often need
4 - 5 times try for a scroll.
greader pro:
pros: plenty of configurable functions (sync, display, etc.), screen zoom in/out
cons: font is dim. no on screen pagedown/up button and the page scroll is unresponsive, a bit better than newsrob?
easyrss:
could not remember clearly the pros and cons. Still not handy though.
google reader website:
tried several browser but the font is small. page scroll is hard though.
I found that the biggest problem for google reader apps on nook touch is that
the page down/up is difficult.
I want an app or web browser solution that satisfies:
large/clear font
on screen pagedown/up button.
Thanks.
I went with newsrob because of the font size changes. I only tried a few others including google reader. I found the site http://fulltextrssfeed.com/ useful for getting the full article rss feed address instead of just the summary. It is nice way of gaining the full article to read when you are away from wifi.
I will stick with newsrob until I find something better.
do you have the problem of unresponsive page scroll?
I've been working with the dev to use the NST page up/down, so here it is. Note it does not sync with Google Reader, but it's easy enough to grab the OMPL file from the site and download it via dropbox/etc.
Enjoy
It's my favorite by far so far (for the NST). Note scrolling with the finger still has issues...seems to be a screen issue with our device. Hard keys are better anyways

I'm a bit confused. Is the apk you are offering modified to allow use of the hard-keys? Or are you just saying that you like this app even though it does not currently have hard-key compatibility but that you hope that hard-key use is forthcoming by this dev?
[update]
I downloaded the apk. Hard keys do not seem to be working.
[update 2]
I spoke too soon. Since I'm right handed I tend to only use the right side hard keys.
The left side hard keys work but, the right side hardkeys do not work. Left side's better than nothing!
I've been testing several google reader apps, and here is a quick comparison of the best ones I've found for the NST:
NewsRob
Pros:
- Works with side buttons (for both article and page switch).
Cons:
- Annoying article list bug: when you go back from article view, the article list is not at the same scrolling position it was before.
- Free version forces to sync all your google reader feeds.
- Font sizes are less than ideal.
SparseRSS
Pros:
- Simple and lightweight.
- ace7196's build have support for left side buttons.
- Free and open source.
Cons:
- Also have the article list bug.
- Doesn't sync with google reader and doesn't support folders.
GoodNews
Pros:
- Works with side buttons (sometimes needs pressing twice).
- Only app I've found that doesn't have the article list bug.
Cons:
- Offline sync doesn't download images and is quite slow.
- Interface is not very e-ink friendly (you can tweak the apk files, though. I removed most ugly color gradients)
For now, I am sticking with GoodNews and only missing offline images feature, but it is very nice anyway.
I use gReader, its contrast is not great, but can sync with google reader and can adjust font size

official google reader app?
I just got a nook touch and used official google reader app last night, that seems to be pretty good. Has font size settings and the text is very readable, not grayed out like some websites in the browser.
Page-like reading?
Hi, I've been following this post for a while. I love my NST but I would really like to have a RSS reader that allows me to read in a page-like format, scrolling with the e-ink screen sucks and google currents and feedly do offer a page-like reading experience (much closer to an e-book) but both require newer version of Android. I've tried every other application out there without much luck so if anyone has some suggestion I'd really appreciate it.

Hi,
I really would love to have Pulse News on the Nook and you can even install it. But probably due to the fact that it uses Flash for its animations, the app crashes right after the splash screen where I presume the Flash starts.
I noticed on my HTC that you can disable Flash in the Pulse-settings. Is it somehow possible to modify the settings without starting the app? Or maybe make an APK where Flash is disabled by default or something like that.
I have Pulse installed on mine, only that it's an older version of it that I download somewhere. Try some apk's, one for sure will work but the market version won't.
I still like SparseRSS the best, simple and fast.
Two issues:
-Frequently get "error: broken pipe" or "error: line 2.."
This probably happens to 1 out of every 10-20 feeds, so after the refresh is done, I have to individually refresh each one that returned an error.. a hassle.
-No folders - any plans for folders in the future? Hard to use when you follow 50 rss feeds

Not exactly an RSS aggregator solution for the NST, but you can use Calibre on your desktop to read RSS feeds and create an .epub from them. You can then set Calibre to email it to you, or create a dropbox script, or something similar on your desktop so you can retrieve the files remotely.
I'm doing this for several newspaper "subscriptions".
The big plus is that I can use the native B&N reader with all its associated features.
Newsrob has very small font. Is there a way how to make it larger?
Is it so small that you can't see it? Or is it as small as the smallest font for reader?
how to scroll down a article in sparse rss? I can't swipe and the side buttons neither work. thanks for a hint.
Runs now fine, sorry for spamming.
Has anyone tried rssdemon?
edit2: rssdemon is perfect for the nst!

the font used in the list of unread items is too small and probably cannot be changed. I can change the font while reading particular item but not the font used in the list.

[Q] How do you guys like your Moto X?

I have been debating buying a Moto X for some time. I keep missing the Dev edition before it sells out (twice now) and I have really been having a hard time with this. I'd like to know what your overall impressions are as well as your input on some various features.
For background, I'm currently using the G2, which I like very much, but the Touchless control, active notificaitons, Moto Connect, Trusted BT devices, and Moto assist features are a big draw for me.
So my questions:
How do you feel about the build quality (overall as well as any defects with your device)?
Do you like the screen? Anyone coming from a 1080p device feel that they are kind of missing out?
Touchless control - Do you use it and if so, do you find it useful?
Active notifications - Do you like this feature more than a dedicated LED? Do you find that you miss notifications or that the screen doesn't come on when you'd like?
Moto Connect - Anyone using this regularly? Does it work well?
Trusted BT Devices - Is anyone using this to bypass pin lock on a corporate account? If so, what device are you using (Pebble smartwatch, jawbone, etc) and how is it working for you?
Moto Assist - How is that feature working for you? Do you find it indespensible, or just nice to have?
Camera (post update) - Anyone with the camera update care to elaborate on how you feel about the X as a camera now?
I know that's a lot of questions. You don't have to answer them all. Just weigh in where you have input. I have read all the reviews and I'm trying to gather some real world commentary on these features and the device as a whole before I pull the trigger.
Thanks in advance to anyone who replies.
Build quality is excellent in my opinion. Coming from a HTC ONE I don't miss 1080p one bit especially with the gained battery life from a lower resolution screen. Motorola connect is my favorite feature so far. I've never had an issue with it. Active display is a game changer. Overall it's the best device I've used to date. You won't regret getting one.

I use Motorola connect a lot too and it is one of my favorite features. but for some reason it doesn't like my contacts and contact pictures. for most of my conversations it only shows the phone number. I don't know why. some of the contacts display picture and name. others just display the number.
1. perfect
2. cant tell the difference, like the video rendering better than what ive seen to date on any android
3. very useful, im doing all my texts and calling without using my hands
4. love this one, cant go back now to not having it
5. downloaded the chrome extension, great
6. not using this
7. use it for driving, plays pandora when i start driving without touching anything
8. happy now, happier in "very soon" as motorola stated today
9. dont wait, get it, its a GREAT phone

Mine used to show only numbers on most contacts and names on a few. The last few days it seems to have been corrected lately as I'm seeing all of my contact names. I did swap out my first x(white) for the black one and when I set up moto connect on the new one the contact names now show. Maybe if you delete and re add the chrome extension it would work? Just guessing though.

I don't believe it uses a lot of battery. It didn't on mine. I started using moto connect but it seems still in its beta stages. If you like moto connect I might suggest trying the mightytext app. They have been doing the text from computer stuff for a lot longer. I was using it previously and switched back to this until moto connect becomes more reliable. The contacts sometimes appear for some people. i had it both ways. Reinstalling at one point made them all appear. But I don't like the pop-out windows much.
Differences/similarities between connect and mightytext:
1. both use a chrome extension and have pop ups in the bottom right corner of your screen
2. MT pops up an individual conversation between you and the other person while I believe the connect just pulled a pop up of all of your text (this was one of my biggest issues)
3. MC lagged more with me when sending texts and then marking that it had sent texts in comparison to MT
4. MT has a webpage that has all of your text on it while MC does a pop out from the chrome extension button that when you click anything else not in the box it goes away. But you can click the pop out button there so MC will make a different window, but it seems to reload messages when it does this
5. Sometimes when viewing the texts from the chrome extension pop out and the actual pop out window in MC they didn't match
6. sometimes in MC it will show the text someone sent but not have loaded the ones I sent yet but it did eventually load. This happened especially when I sent the text manually from my phone as opposed to from my computer while using MC.
as for your other questions. I really think this phone might be a good buy because of its hardware. I feel like the development of touchless controls and other apps that may use the same hardware in the future could get huge. Other phones won't be able to do this because they don't have the low power processor. Also active notifications can become highly improved. Further there is an led light on the phone but I nor anywhere I have read has figured out how to utilize it if we decided we wanted the led light as well as active notifications. Also, the camera technology allowing better action shots isn't that great right now but it can be improved greatly over time. And finally, many of the areas that things can be improved on are more apps then big updates that will need to be released by google, so they will hopefully get to your phone faster, e.g., touchelss controls, active notifications, etc..
How do you feel about the build quality (overall as well as any defects with your device)?
Overall build quality is nice and the phone has a nice weight and feel to it.

Screen is fine, and more than adequate.
Touchless control - Do you use it and if so, do you find it useful?
I have only tested it but appears it could be useful
Active notifications - Do you like this feature more than a dedicated LED? Do you find that you miss notifications or that the screen doesn't come on when you'd like?
So far I like it but it is a little sensitive. Some additional controls would be nice.
Moto Connect - Anyone using this regularly? Does it work well?
On my list to test...
Trusted BT Devices - Is anyone using this to bypass pin lock on a corporate account? If so, what device are you using (Pebble smartwatch, jawbone, etc) and how is it working for you?
Trusted BT works well and is a nice feature.
Moto Assist - How is that feature working for you? Do you find it indespensible, or just nice to have?
Camera (post update) - Anyone with the camera update care to elaborate on how you feel about the X as a camera now?
Do not have the update yet.

P20 Pro Questions

1. I use AT&T in the USA. In the past when using Huawei phones no matter which application I use for text, MMS pictures appear fuzzy and smaller in size then the same pics being sent from an AT&T phone. I've used google messages, textra, makes no difference...is there a way to send MMS pictures with high quality images?
2. Is there a way to turn off the auto dimming feature? When I open chrome or gmail it dims by itself, even when auto brightness is set to off. I have read this is a long standing problem with huawei.
anybody?
