[Q] Honestly, is the Vivid a "good" phone? - HTC Vivid, Raider, Velocity

So here is the deal... I have been a Verizon customer for years, and I am just sick and tired of them jerking me around and upping their rates, taking away unlimited data, taking away early upgrades, etc. So I am thinking of jumping ship and going to Net10. I have also been a big HTC fan for a long time, currently using the HTC Rezound which seems to be roughly a slightly improved CDMA/LTE version of the Vivid. I can get a new, sealed in the box, unlocked HTC Vivid for about $200 on eBay.
So where I am going with this, knowing HTC has had quality models and, well, lets just say questionable models, how is the Vivid? Is it solid and relatively problem free? easy to unlock, S-OFF, root, ROM, return to stock, etc. Has anyone used this on Net10/StraightTalk?
So basically I am just looking for people's opinion of the phone in general, from a heavy phone users perspective... My other alternative's at this time are the Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket which I can get new for about $210, or just suck it up and grab a Nexus 4 from Google, although the $350+tax and shipping for the 16GB model would hurt, a lot, right now.
Thoughts?

Its not that its a bad phone because its not its actually really good but its just not the easiest to work with.

I would have gone with the nexus 4 as I am sick of htc's BS but to each his own.

Yeah, I am very familiar with the uniqueness of HTC products... I've owned more than one (Inc2, Aria, Rezound) and once you figure it out they are all really similar. I chose the SGS2 Skyrocket not because the Vivid was bad, but for me the SGS2 was just a better choice this time, same money, slight faster, better battery life, lighter, thinner, and more developer support. I don't think I would have been unhappy with the Vivid, just think I will be happier with the Sammy.
Thanks for responding.

[Q] Is it worth selling my Nexus?

I was very interested in selling my nexus and before I did I wanted go get my fellow nexus one user's opinion. Why should I keep this phone? I was looking into the evo by sprint. The screen size amazes me. If I was to sell my nexus one how much would I be able to sell it for? What are some good reasons to keeping my nexus one? I love this phone but I have it stuck in my head that there is something better out there. Please convince me not to sell it.
wait for desire HD
If you want to switch carriers that's one thing. But on GSM carriers there really is no worthy upgrade till the G2, but even then... A stock 4" phone is needed, the Galaxy S is is more of a side-grade IMO.
The dev level upgrades are one thing that would make me keep this phone for at least mid way through the next year. I like the fact that Google will upgrade this phones' software for a while at least and we don't have to wait for hacked roms or carrier OTA's.
Hold onto it until the Dell Thunder! I am.

On Ebay Canada, used Nexus ones (ATT) are going for $500-1100,
Looking to sell mine for $450, is that a good price?
Definately keeping mine forever. It's more than just a phone.

There´s n better phone out there (for me )...just bigger screen phones, probably better screen, better multitouch...but that´s all just too little to convince me!
After my Nexus One, it has to be a step forward, like having 1.5 or 2 Ghz
A few points I'd like to share with you.
First, the Nexus One being what it is is reason enough not to get rid of it. It is a classic, it is the only HTC device available with vanilla Android and high end hardware, and everything else has some flavor of garbage depending on the manufacturer. It really is the modern day Google phone, their baby, and the device that gets all the updates before everything else.
I typically sell my old phones to pay for most of the cost of my new ones, but with the Nexus One, I'm pretty sure I'm going to use it until it dies and still keep it to remember how great it was after that.
As for switching to Sprint for the Evo, I would also wait until something truly worthy of replacing your Nexus One comes along (and on a better network). The added features of the Evo aren't worth the poor battery life and slower general operation when using it.
For my next upgrade, I'm going to wait for something with a higher-than-WVGA resolution screen, xenon flash, and something that can truly live up to the Nexus One's legacy.
^ Agree...Won't be selling my classic N1 for some time! And will never go to Sprint
if i buy a phone which is from att or tmobile will i be able to use it i m dubai (u.a.e)

Discussion: How bad of a hit has development taken due to HTC's lies?

Hey guys, just wondering what your opinion is on how this locked bootloader issue has affected the potential development of this phone. How bad do you think it really is? Countless people have returned their phones. I'm sure many potential devs have strayed from this phone or HTC as a whole due to this issue. This is a damn good phone as stock, who knows how much better it could be if it were unlocked from the start. What do you guys think the development will be like once it does get unlocked?

I've gotta think it'll pick up. The Inspire was the only "4G" HTC phone for a long time so I can't imagine HTC coming out with anything new on ATT for a little while at least so I gotta think if things do get rolling people will come.

I sure hope so, but it is depressing to think how many people we have already lost and how much potential devlopment is lost. I'm not sure how big of a factor LTE is to people though, considering it isn't widely available. Not sure when the next AT&T HTC phone will be coming out, but locked bootloader or not, this thing is a beast and is getting ICS. I really don't see a better AT&T phone out right now. Samsung Touchwiz is boring, and so is the Samsung development. There's just so much more devs can do with sense.

I'm kicking myself because I keep telling myself I'm just going to pay full retail and get international devices. I may still look for an Evo 3D or something, but although I'm in a non LTE area I can't wait for it to arrive.
I'll stick with this device and learn to develope for it should the day ever arrive. I'm sure if we ever get root, more devs will migrate. It is a truly capable device and a huge step from my tp2.
it will pick up some if the BL ever gets unlocked.
It really is sad that htc/att are dragging their feet on this. They are losing customers every day, I'm returning mine tomorrow. I really like the vivid but am a flashaholic. I have an amaze also and it doesn't really have much dev attention. I don't really understand why, it's also a great device. I honestly would probably be keeping my vivid if I didn't have the amaze, I'm a fan of the sense ui. I'll be giving the nitro a test for the next 30 days, it should be easy to root with super one click but as with most att devices it will probably take 3 weeks or so just to get a forum for it since it's not a Samsung device.

Could you return the Vivid, get another phone, and then return that phone and get a Vivid again? I'm just curious on how AT&T's return/exchange works. Is there a limit of some sort?

Yea, that's what I would probably do if I didn't buy my phone off-contract. Who knows when the next HTC phone on AT&T will come out. The last high end one was the Inspire and that was months and months ago. I think it'll be tough for these people that have always been with HTC to just switch and stay with another brand for a long period of time. Samsung UI is so boring it's not even funny.
Hmm right now I have a Samsung Captivate and I'm either going to the HTC Vivid or SGS2 and right now it seems like the Vivid is not the best option.
I flash ROMs weekly on my Captivate. I guess I was still ignorant and didn't know about HTC's decision to not keep the bootloader so open, like they promised.
Looks like the Samsung SGS2 is the better route...
I picked up a skyrocket because of the locked bootloader but as soon as its unlocked ill trade it for a vivid no doubt. HTC is good with making phones

[EVENT] Mass Return of our HTC Vivid

If enough people are interested, I had an idea that DFW XDA members all return their Vivids at the same time for a mass return at the AT&T HQ store in order to make a statement. This is the heart of their operation. We can discuss this, but what I and others came up with so far is:
AT&T Mass Return
Tuesday December 6th at 1:00pm
208 S Akard Street
STE 110
Dallas, TX 75202
Customer Parking Available for 2 hours at:
1600 Commerce Street
Dallas, TX 75201
Everyone is invited. Whether you have a Vivid or not. I understand not everyone lives here, but all are welcome none the less.
Thanks to Radi0chik
What do you guys think of this idea?

can some one help me decide on what phone to get on sunday once i return mine?
i think that lg nitro hd is nice, but ive heard the ui sucks on it... so i was thinking either that new google nexus phone (sorry, im new to android and cant remember all these pohones) or the gs2... id rather have the og gs2 cause its faster than the skyrocket and i dont care to have lte

Yea if your going to go with a gs2 Definitely get the OG. The Skyrocket has issues with screen resolution and such. As far as the LG Nitro goes I think that is up in the air considering it is going to have a full 720p screen. I am actually slightly leaning toward the LG just because of that but I still need to research it a little bit more.
Yes. I am wondering the same. Though I'm not sure if it will be rooted... New to thus android world. Also, I'm not sure how the devs will take the phone. I heard the lg ui is like touchwiz but retarded... Not meaning to insult. I'm hoping someone will do a good overview of the nitro by sunday

IMO, both of those UIs are on par with excrement. On day 1 of owning my Captivate, I switched launchers. Even on Froyo/GB, I could not put up with it and just went full AOSP launcher-wise. If the LG launcher is the same, I know that I won't like it for sure.
Sense is the only aftermarket UI that I like, hence why I ended up with this phone.
EDIT: Also, what's even the point of this? Sending a message to AT&T about this phone would do nothing with you guys mass-returning it. After the event, you wouldn't even care what happened to this device's development life anyway, while you guys all go for Nitros or Skyrockets or whatever phone fits your fancy.
Occupy AT&T....not a chance
You mad cause you have no root...?
Root doesn't allow you to do much anyway other than to either overclock your CPU, make a complete backup of your rom, flash any random rom you want etc...
All the phones have the same CPU chipset, you're just paying for different screen resolutions and plastic shells that cover everything
Samsung couldn't even use its custom CPU because it lacked the ability to incorporate LTE technology, so they chose the Snapdragon S3 APQ8060 dual-core CPU...the same one in the Vivid, and the same one is in the LG Nitro.
Its the only CPU capable of allowing AT&T's 4gLTE service to run smooth for the end user
So go ahead, boycott the Vivid, youre only benefit is a screen with a smaller resolution or a screen with a higher resolution, plus youre still gonna pay the difference plus a $35 restocking fee is applicable...
It seems to me that the problem isn't the Vivid. It's AT&T. If you really want to make a statement then keep this amazing phone, cancel your contracts with AT&T, and allow the devs to continue working on unlocking and fully rooting the device which you know they will. This will do two things. One: send a message to AT&T that will cost them BIG-TIME. Two:Once the devs see how many people are willing to SACRIFICE their wireless mobility for such a great device, they may release a carrier unlock and varying radio support for the different competitors for the vivid. There are some major competitors that offer much better rates and data packages with full LTE support that DON'T lock bootloaders.
It seems silly to put such a serious and damaging halt to great development just because you're unwilling to sever the head of the snake, whereas mass returns will accomplish nothing. Well, not nothing, but if you REALLY want this problem addressed, make AT&T pay with the sudden loss of income. HTC isn't the problem. The Vivid isn't the problem. Big corporations have insurance policies to protect them when there's a problem with inventory/product defects/returns etc. But losing customers.. That just plain sucks for ANY business. Hit them where it hurts. The Next big awesome phone you want will just be locked up tight as well unless you send a CLEAR message they CAN'T ignore.
The Vivid counterpart in Canada (Raider) has already had great roms and kernels that work and are supported/updated every couple of days. I love this phone more and more and would switch carriers in a heartbeat if the company I pay my hard earned money to EVERY Month wasn't treating me like a VALUED customer. AT&T KNOWS what they're doing. They KNOW that what they're continuuing to do is WRONG. But they aren't listening becuase the customers aren't willing to lose they're precious contract they've worked so hard for.
Yes, it means going without the ability to use your nice phone for a little while. Yes it will suck having NO cellphone at all with all it's nice features at your disposal and whim. Maybe getting a junker from a better provider and waiting for the devs is asking too much.
Either that or stop and realize you've had your phone for ONE month. Forget everything I've said about teaching your carrier a lesson, and show some support for xda (maybe a little faith and gratitude as well) because they LOVE tinkering with HTC's products. I wonder sometimes if there would even BE an XDA team without HTC. Be patient, or teach them a REAL lesson in customer service. The alternative is YOU losing out, and feeling all proud and happy for giving up something you once loved. But then again nobody wants to admit they're ACTUALLY PAYING AT&T to treat us like prisoners. Stripping you of your right to DO WITH YOUR PROPERTY THAT WHICH YOU FEEL LIKE DOING.
While we're at it let's all go buy REALLY nice houses where we're not allowed to decorate, hang pictures, change the layout of the livingroom, or park our cars anywhere near.
Been following these forums since the beginning of this week when I ordered the phone through amazon. Now that it has finally shipped today after being backordered, I'm seeing this
and returning this, which I got for a penny, would mean I would have to pay full price for the phone I exchange for, correct?
I wish the morale in this forum didn't seem like it is dying away, but I understand that many of us are almost at the 30 day limit on exchanges and two years is an awful long time to go without an unlocked bootloader.
My first htc phone, after going through LG and blackberry.... which might be exchanged like all of yours....
I think a lot of you are missing the point. This is not just about the bootloader. everyone's reasons are different so I can only share my own. So if you have been paying attention to this forum at all you might get that. Personally my reasons are in no particular order: Carrier IQ, locked bootloader..not just because of development, but because you can't get rid of Carrier IQ while the bootloader is locked, being throttled by AT&T with normal use only halfway through my Billing cycle at only 3.6gb while I still have to pay full price even though I'm on an unlimited plan, their lack of answers, their silencing of our voices on forums, and those are just a few reasons. This is beyond "you mad about no root". And if you think I won't care about what happens after this, then you really haven't been paying attention. My plan is to import a phone or stick with my streak until I figure out a better option. If I use a phone they don't have on file for me, then I can at least not be throttled or be affected directly by Carrier IQ.
This idea isn't JUST for vivid users, and no one is occupying anything. This is for the returns to occur in one fell swoop so they can feel the hit they have caused themselves. As paying customers, most of us are tired of being treated like this. If you're having trouble understanding why and how this would matter, then you haven't been following this forum.

I think it's worth sticking to Samsung for a while. Eventhough I love sense interface so much, I enjoy having good debloated ROMs that give me full potential of the phone.

The Carrier IQ situation will allow you to break free of your contract, not happy with AT&T, maybe it wasnt for you, not the first time a subscriber switched carriers. AT&T just got LTE when other carriers had it for longer and unthrottled, what stopped you from leaving then?, I have a bandwidth monitor on my vivid, the HTC IQ AGENT ( Carrier IQ ) doesn't take up gigs of your data plan, matter of fact it takes less than 1/10th of a MB. It is very freaky what this app is capable of and was pretty shocked when I saw the youtube vid. Did you know that uploads are also counted as well!. AT&T will soon realize that 4GB just isnt enough to satisfy customers.
Propose this, you have the ability to break free of your contract pretty soon cause of this whole CIQ debacle, if you want AT&T to keep your business, tell them you want unthrottled unlimited data on your grandfathered plan, they cant do that then just leave without penalty.
Its not HTC's fault AT&T has some weird business practices and contract practices that show up in forums / media from time to time, returning any carriers devices hurts sales and manufacturer reputation. Take the fight where it belongs, tell it to Al Franken..lol

I'm in the same boat as you got mine for .01 and it's a nice phone. The only thing I'd like to do is remove some bloat apps, but honestly who cares. Everything I've thrown at it works way better than it did on my EVO 4g on Sprint.
Its not like I have unlimited data with ATT and I pay for 4gig of data.
I'm keeping mine root or no root.
EDIT: I misread an article that I thought had said that HTC promised it unlocked in a month. Either way, you people are so impatient.
EDIT2: If this is for Carrier IQ then I totally agree, but for a phone that doesn't have an unlocked bootloader That's just stupid.
If you guys are seriously going to "occupy AT&T" then you are idiots. A few hundred people won't make that huge of a difference when they have nearly 100 Million customers.
In the end you're only hurting the development community because when it does get unlocked everyone would have left.
That's my $0.02. Good day.

You raise some really good points. Though I do feel HTC does have some degree of responsibility because it's on their branded product with their name attached to the actual app.

Am I the only one dissapointed by the total lack of new phones this year?

OK, with the exception of the HTC One X, there has been, as far as I know, -0- new high end phones brought to market, at least here in the USA. Why is that? In 2 more weeks half the year will be over with nothing new. I have a Galaxy Nexus on VZW right now, and I have to admit, its pretty underwhelming. Ive had it since December and its had no official updates at all. I have the newest 404 leak, but it still gets poor reception, and drinks the extended battery like its a marathon runner drinking Gatorade.
It is funny to me that you are on Verizon and complaining about "underwhelming" phones. When have they ever had a phone to be excited about? Of course you haven't received an update. Verizon takes forever to push anything out!
Well, when I jumped on the Nexus bandwagen, I had hoped for something with a little more, the phone got good reviews. I guess I should have known better with its specs and all. But still, I want to make up for it, but theres nothing out there!
I agree nothing has really made me say "wow" lol, so I'm still sticking with my HTC Inspire 4g untill then. Which of course HTC snubbed by not giving us ICS.. oh well I put it on anyways
Honestly, as long as we're on VZ this will probably continue to be the case. They have a hard push for Moto phones with their oh so lovely locked bootloaders as their main devices. They carry HTC and Samsung, but with the exception of the Rezound get nothing of worth from either manufacturer.
Sony has some great devices dropping later this year, but there's no promise of any of them coming to Verizon.
Depending on what the upcoming cycle holds I may switch to AT&T and get the unlimited data plan on an unlocked phone.
ATT has unlimited data again?

Farewell Guys

How is the Nexus 4 on AT&T? do you get HSPA? or is it strictly 2g/EDGE?
Yeah I get hspa+, usually 6-12mb, it's not bad at all. Just make sure they don't mess with your plan and put the apn in from your vivid, otherwise you'll get stuck on the regular 3G plan. At&t did that to my wife.
Actually it was a big mess. I got mine in January, and I needed a micro sim. I went to the store, and the manager ended up taking care of me, and she gave me a micro sim, didn't mess with my account, and I was on my way. Well when my wife got hers in march, same thing went in there for a micro sim, but got a regular employee this time. When we got back her data wouldn't work at all! So I checked the account, and for whatever reason the idiot deleted her data plan all together! So I call at&t and get it back but they put her on the regular 3G plan for smartphones and the Vivid apn wouldn't even connect! Finally I talked to an employee on live chat the next day and got them to put her back on the lte plan!
So make sure they don't tamper with your account! Either that or get a sim cutter and try it out!

I've been thinking about getting either the Nexus 4 or the LG optimus G. Basically the same phone, I have another year on my contract but the Vivid is quickly dying out. After that I will probably jump to Tmobile as it will be cheaper than AT&T even with my corporate discount.
Yeah the nexus 4 was a no brainer for me, I was sick of my vivid, and I am under contract until march 2014, so it was the cheapest option. It's a nice phone especially for the price. But its not perfect either, I will warn you. Camera is a downgrade from the vivid, it doesn't suck, and in well lit rooms the camera is just as nice. But in low light, the vivid owns it. Also build quality doesn't suck but it's not built as nice as the vivid. It seems well built out of the box, but there are gaps between the screen and bezel that tend to get dust stuck in them and over time the back glass develops a slight creaking sound to it. Also the chrome around the outside edges gets scuffed, poor design choice imo, should of used a flat silver instead.
Figured I'd lay it to you straight. It's an excellent phone but it's not perfect. And make sure you get a case if you get one, back glass is very slick and the phone tends to make suicide dives on its own when you just sit it down. Happened to me twice, luckily, no damage.

When my wife's Galaxy 2 Skyrocket got its SECOND upgrade (originally Gingerbread, upgraded to ICS, then upgraded to Jellybean) and when HTC said that the Vivid would NOT get an upgrade to Jellybean, that was what made my mind up that this was the last HTC phone that I would own. I've had three, but I am done with HTC. That S4 looks sooooo good!
My dad and one of my friends have an Optimus G. Its a nice phone.

I thought the same thing this is the last htc i will buy.
My Optimus G arrives Friday, looks like just in time as the forum is dying again (the 2nd time since I have had my Vivid.)
Yeah the phone is getting old and people are getting their early upgrades now. If cyanogenmod would of came last summer, development might still be going but now, too little too late.
Lesson learned for me, if it's not a popular device, don't upgrade to it. Yeah at first I was happy but a couple months in, the honeymoon was over and the bugs of sense 3.6 that were never address, terrible battery life, and no actual roms outside of modified stock roms had me plotting a plan to get a galaxy nexus... But by the time I had the money, the nexus 4 was out, and well that's a no brainer
