I have cracked my screen...internally - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know what I can do to fix it?...my screen is only showing colour lines with black lines in between on the top half of the screen only, thanks.
Edit: I am 99% pretty sure the LCD is cracked.

It'll cost you a fair amount of £ to fix that. You'll have to replace the display and the glass (since it's zero gap, and therefore they're in one piece).
See if there are any service centers near you and get a quote from them, but it'll be expensive. It'll almost be cheaper to just buy a new device (on contract, that is)

I have been to a few repair shops around my area, I got quotes for £180, £150 and £100.
One guy said it has to be opened internally and replaced.

Ouch.. I have also cracked my screen (just the glass though). What are you going to do? Fix it? Trash it?

I am going to get it fixed, I need to delete my personal data before handing it in...I am trying to use Screencast but I need to enable 'USB debugging' from setting menu, I can't do this as I can't now see anything on my screen.

If anyone can assist with the folling thread then please do:

Happened to me, Samsung replaced it, they took FIVE MONTHS to do it but they did (After almost entering with a process against the company). They said it costs R$700 to fix it here, but the phone alone (new) on the stores is about R$850.
Well, five months of wait, i won't buy a Samsung phone again, and the screen they placed looks **** (It its REALLY over-saturated, and darker colours look so **** that you can't imagine.)

Have you enabled this?

I managed to get my phone fixed, it cost me £160...I have my old screen unit if anyone requires it?

Under (At) 30 Days, cracked screen

I was carrying a heavy box today against my body, I must have jammed a corner into my tilt, because afterwards the screen is all white with a black spot. I am pretty sure it is a cracked LCD.
1. Anyone have any advice on getting service through ATT? I heard they had a 30 day no questions asked policy. It is obviously a cracked screen, pretty sure they wouldn't deal with that.
2. It was paid for on a visa, do they have something I can take advantage of?
3. Where is a good/cheap place to buy the replacement parts? I am not too worried about digging in and fixing it myself.
4. What are my options for paying someone to fix it? HTC, ATT, or otherwise?
I really appreciate your help, I am terribly aggravated with myself for break it. Just trying to minimized the damage right now.

1. They will charge you for breaking it.
2. No, you can only dispute a charge if they didn't hold up their end of the bargain, you broke the phone, its your problem now.
3. I dont know
4. I believe they will charge a lot, but still less than a whole new phone. See how much it costs and then also see how much you can get on eBay for your broken one and how much a new one will cost you.
Good luck, I had the same luck as well, wasnt even a week of having my tilt and it fell in a bunch of clothes and had a small crack the slowly did the same results of your screen, I had to go through hoops to get a replacement from AT&T, not my most favorite people to say the least.. :-\ Just got my replacement yesterday as the phone died Monday.

Ya, they will charge you with either buying a refurb phone, let you get a junky replacement phone if you cant afford it, or 3, raise hell with 611, and in the local AT&T athorized store you bought it from.
I've seen a few replacement screens on ebay if you have the guts to take your phone apart you could try one of those.

regarding 2, I heard that visa offers some sort of protection plan for items purchased with it. I wasn't planning on back charging it.
I was unable to find any screens on ebay, but I'll keep looking. I found a replacement service for $170.
Here is a link to a screen that i found on ebay.

That doesn't look like too bad of an option. I need to read about what is involved to install it. I think i have seen some posts of people have issues even after replacing the screen (incompatability?).
Also, that is in Hong Kong, yuck. Perhaps I can find one that is in the US and includes the tools required.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction though.
I just purchased this screen:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...em=270204431330&_trksid=p3984.cTODAY.m238.lVI
Does anybody forsee any issues replacing it? I found directions online.
I actually changed my mind about repairing the screen myself after reading the directions. It seems risky that I'd break it myself.
1. Do you recommend I get a 3rd party to repair it? Pocket pc techs is an option ($170)
2. I called HTC today, they said screen replacement starts at $193. I am guessing that it is worth the extra $20 to have it done by HTC, perhaps it won't void the (rest) of the warranty?

Broken AT&T Tilt Screen

As this is my first post I would just first like to say thank you to everyone who has contributed to this forum, without it this new smart phone user/AT&T subscriber wouldn't have been able to figure anything out.
Long story short: I just bought a new Tilt like three weeks ago and the LCD is already cracked. AT&T doesn't offer insurance on this phone and I am not entirely sure about HTC's manufacturers warranty. I checked across the forums and found some good information regarding replacing broken Tilt LCD screens, it all just seems fairly old. What I am wondering is what is the cheapest, easiest way to fix the LCD on the Tilt? Right now the cheapest I can find the LCD/Touchscreen combo with the right tools is $69.99 plus $12.99 S+H. Is this the best bet? Any other options I haven't thought of yet?
Also, I can't seem to find detailed picture instructions regarding the LCD swap anywhere on the forum? So where are the best directions for this online?
Now, time for a little rant. How the hell does AT&T not offer insurance for a phone that retails for over $300 brand new? Let's get serious here, it's an expensive piece of gadgetry that I happen to pay a lot of money for to use every month. The least they could offer their highest paying customers is a chance for insurance. By not offering insurance to their customers AT&T is basically saying "Piss off, oh, and make sure you pay your bill on time!" with a permanent smile on their face as they walk to the bank with our money. I'm sick of phone companies saying "I'm sorry, theres nothing I can do for you" to the customers that finance their paychecks, vacations, and replacement trophy wives boob jobs. I understand it's a service based industry and everyone wants their service, giving them the ultimate upper hand in the situation. But let's start thinking a little bit more with our heads and a little less with our wallets. It's time for these places to realize how ridiculous they are sometimes.
Apologize for the missive their, but man did it feel good.

Mike Channon has links to Disassembly guides. Try a search for "Kaiser Disassembly Guide." My expert opinion, remember advise it worth waht you pay for it , is that the $70 is a good deal.
EDIT: I'm in a good mood. Searched for you today. Kaiser Disassembly Guides.
And s response to your rant. See this is why Mobile Phone Companies have the WORSE customer service rating of ANY business.
yea I cracked my screen as well about a month after having it.. I ended up buying a screen replacement for 115 off of ebay...
But now be careful... When i broke my screen, I thought that was the only damage the phone took... well the impact was right above where the sim tray is... and it damaged it as well.. my phone wasn't able to read sim cards anymore after replacing the screen... So I did a bold move, and told AT&T warranty support that my phone all of a sudden didnt read my card anymore.. i sent it back to them, and they sent me a replacement...
they could have charged me $400 for sending them a broken "out-of-warranty" item but i lucked out

That is exactly why they don't provide insurance for it. I asked a friend who works for them and he said that was the main reason. However if you live in dc metropolitan area there is a company called "Simply wireless" that offers insurance for any kind of mobile device and its 60 or 70 bucks upfront one time and insurance is good until something happens to device. Didn't get it myself but could be worth looking into.
p.s. i was also going to refer you to micheal but i Jimmy's already done it
Thanks to both of you already. Jimmy thanks for posting those directions, they look a little more intense than I thought but I don't think I'll have a problem replacing it myself. the $70 is way cheaper than the $170 from pocketpctechs.com
How would I make sure everything else is working fine on my phone? It's still syncing fine with my laptop and sends/receives calls, so I imagine its still fine. Is there a SIM access point through WMDC? Just to check that?
Also, anyone know any other ways to possibly get around this warranty here? The screen broke this morning, and I'm still not entirely sure how it happened. I had left my wall charger back home and only had my usb plug to charge my phone from. I woke up to the screen cracked and my phone being really really hot. The phone was at the foot of my bed, so I am not ruling anything out like me accidentally pushing in the screen, but has there ever been issues with the Kaiser's over heating and popping their LCD screen?
Thanks

I used to work for Simply Wireless, and Mobile Solutions.. both a crooks.. dont buy from them, and definietly dont buy their insurance...
even though they are trying to clean their act up, their are 100% sales driven and dont give a f*ck bout their customer... trust me like i said, i worked for them...
if ur in the DC metro area, check out Wireless Jungle, they are located in Burke, Manassas, Herndon, and other parts of NoVA, they are excellent imo

honestly i doubt heat caused it... looking at my phone, i have enough room to stick my fingernail under the casing sourrounding the screen, so there is alittle room to move in case heat does expand the internals. My phone has gotten pretty damn hot before, to the point where i couldnt hold it (forgot it in the car with wifi bt and gps on... in 105F temp) and it was still fine....
I dont condone this... but when i broke my screen, i was extreemly careful in replacing it, and made sure not to add any additional scratches... once i was done, the phone looked like it did on day 1... so when i sent it back to AT&T there was no way they could tell it had been cracked open...
if ur phone still rings, and u can answer the calls, u should be ok...
I actually had the insurance prior to switching over to the tilt in October. In December my screen cracked and I called them and they said that since I was a long standing customer, they would replace it. they sent me a refurbished phone in 2 days.
I broke the scren again in February and this time I did not call immediately. about a month later I went past the store and told him the situation and he said to call again. I did and they sent me another one. they canceled my policy because I had two claims in one year. but they told me that I could pick it up again in a year.
Moral: always ask...you never know!
Awesome, more good info from everyone. I'm from the Rochester, NY area. Any idea if theres some sort of place that will insure any branded phones in my area? Google is failing me here. Also, do these places have to check your phone before they insure it? If theres some way I can get around that and put insurance on my phone I would just wait like a week and send it in...
yea if they "forget" to remove the insurance plan... or if u ask a stupid rep to add it, and they do... ur golden, and they will replace ur phone... I'm still grandfathered in with my insruance
btw kendall sent u a pm
so maybe AT&T is getting a little smarter. I called and got 4 different customer service reps and all of them told me it was ineligible...no luck with the bull**** approach. HTC USA said no go on everything too... I am getting a little fed up here. I have had this phone for only 3 weeks and everywhere I go everybody pretty much just dismisses me. My favorite dialog of the day came with one AT&T rep who was pissed off at more than just me trying to get an answer from her. And this is after she already told me the Tilt was ineligible for insurance
Me: So basically what your trying to say is that if I break my phone I'm pretty much screwed
AT&T Lady: umm... well. You can apply to get insurance on your phone and than you would be covered.
Me: you just told me I can't put insurance on my phone at all and you can't fix it for me
AT&T Lady: Wait. You can't put insurance on this? Hang on. (here she put me on hold to, what I assume at least, check her facts again) Alright Mr. Davis we can't insure your phone. Can I offer you a replacement Tilt at full retail price?
Let's get it it together AT&T, support the customers that pay your bills. We don't get the corporate discounts you get so it's a little ridiculous having to deal with all this crap.
Suggestion here...add an LCD Replacement walk-through to the Kaiser specific Wiki...or perhaps a whole section concerning DIY repairs and mods...Just something concise so it's a little easier to find. Thanks again to everyone though.

that auction appears to just be for the touch screen overlay, not the LCD screen.

I'm trying it. Please see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=337102&page=10
and the page after. Should be interesting.
i ordered from htclcd.com (redirects to blackberry8100parts.com) on tuesday afternoon; i just received it from DHL. came in two separate boxes, one was the screen and tool, the other was another tool (different sizes). price was 68.80 including shipping from omaha, ne to knoxville, tn. regrettably i left the tilt at home so i can't do the replacement in the office today; i'll update when i've done the replacement (successfull or otherwise...) this evening or tomorrow morning. i'll try to remember to take some pics.
take off the four outer screws, and GENTLY GENTLY GENTLY pry the outer plastic bezel/frame off. you have to remove a philips head screw inside and to the left of the ear-peice speaker (as you look at the board from the back of the ear-peice (i.e. the inside of the bezel); i did not put this screw back on when re-assembling, i did pry the ear-piece connectors up a little to make sure they had enough stroke to make contact. you will need to remove GENTLY the adhesive that holds the sim-carrier to the back of the screen. once the parts are apart you can see the plug to remove the screen from the back of the button pad. reverse to reassemble. you do not have remove any peices from the main body or remove the screen from the main body IF you are only replacing the touch screen. i'll have my pics uploaded some time tomorrow. FYI, htclcd.com did not include the "plastic tool" that you are to use to pry the bezel off with but judicious use of a micro-driver and a guitar pick got the job done; for 20$US less than the competition and 2 day delivery, i am very happy with my purchase from them (htclcd.com = blackberry8100parts.com).
cheers all!

[Q] Cracked screen :(

Hello all.
I've been around the forums for awhile (just used the search functions for my previous issues) but seem to have no luck with this one. Well, anyway.. A few days ago I dropped my Vivid from about 2 feet and yeaaah it's absolutely shattered all the way. What are my options? I'm tech saavy so I think I could replace it; however, with the phone being so new I can't seem to find a disassemble tutorial for it. Ive found the screens on a website and on eBay but they seem to say HTC on the top instead of AT&T (because I would reeeeally like to return this and get the skyrocket) so... Does anyone know of a disassembly guide for it? Orrrr... Can I get HTC to repair it?
Also, I found someone local that said he would do it for $120.. But I'd have to pay him upfront since the screen is so pricey.. But that just seems very odd to me since he's working out of his house... Hmm

There is for the digitizer glass. dunno where to get a new LCD though.. Sorry dude.
Isn't that all I need though? The phone works fine.. The glass is just shattered
well there ya go.. if the LCD is not damaged that is all you need..
Okay, cool. Do you know of any online tutorial to install it? Im pretty sure I can do it but I don't want to totally screw it up lol
This might help you.. Remember Google is your best friend. http://www.firstpost.com/topic/organization/htc-corporation-htc-sensation-glass-digitizer-replacement-repair-hd-complete-video-5ImE5hUXK8s-37569-5.html
It's not the vivid but should provide some insight.
Yeah, I was googling and youtubing vids but I didn't know which other HTC would be similar design to the vivid, well, besides the raider.
You could get insurance from your phone from AT&T (as long as it's within 30 days of when you bought it). I decided to get insurance for my Vivid, and they didn't even ask to look at my phone. So add the insurance to your plan, then put in a claim a little bit later (prolly not immediately after).
I already tried that route. It's a $199 deductible on the vivid... Which is absolutely ridiculous.
Could pay the deductible but tell them you lost the phone. Yeah the IMEI will be blacklisted but you will have a test device for root and S-OFF. Also you can sell the removable parts from it too or keep them for spare.
This one fell about three feet onto the corner with the search button not even a week after receiving...

^EXACTLY what mine looks like what are you going to do about it
..I actually found a HTC raider tear down on YouTube; however, the little "void" circle by the battery is a screw so I reaaaally don't want to void my warranty. So, I'll probably just pay the $199
I called for replacement told em it was lost payed 200 wanting to find a Dec. That would be interested hacking that doesn't have the vivid yet but not sure how to go about it..

I just cracked mine also. Obviously no gorilla glass!! I have insurance and called to get it replaced, the deductible was $199 which is higher than you can buy the phone for. I called back into 611 and raised Hel_ with the AT&T Rep because the insurance company is apparently a third party. Dropped the insurance, it is not worth it and she will send me a new phone for $50 after I stated I would go to Verizon for an Apple! Now I can get the glass replaced and Gazelle will give me $300 for the repaired phone!
Ha! my vivid got ran over by a Thunderbird on Christmas eve...and lived to tell the tail! Lol I was super surprised to see only one lil nick from a rock that made it through the zagg screen gaurd..and the screen now has a unique blue "ghost cloud" in the top left corner of the screen the screen also has a few tiny chips in the bottom left corner and along the sides but u can't see them under the case I have which also saved the phone from being crushed! O and it was laying screen up if that matters at all.

My 2 Cents
IMHO this may be one instance where thr HTC phones being built with more solid materials actually works against us, the phone being much heavier hits with greater force and possibly is more prone to damage.. I may be wrong but it's my opionion (I always get a decent case to provide at least basic impact protection) I like the Platinum cases sold at BestBuy (good belt clip & protection once you learn the trick of unlatching the case parts)
Best of Luck, sorry this really does not help you after the fact.
Cheers

Some other sites sell Digitizers and LCD's for the vivid, but to be quite honestly the process is very simple to fix. The only minus is that you'll spend anywhere between $100 to $120 to get it fixed out of pocket...or pay that $199 deductible and realize that carrier insurance is borked.

Nexus One Screen problems

So it just happened this past Friday, a white bar appeared on the right side of my phone's screen and shortly after my phone ran outta batteries. When I plugged it in to charge the screen just slowly showing a blossoming of pixel colors all over the screen. If i leave it alone it will boot into the OS fine and I can hear all my notifications and everything seems to work fine but the screen just turns black with a thin blue bar of light on the top. Is there anyway to fix this aside from replacing my screen? and is it a digitizer problem?
now the screen is just completely black when i turn it on, but it is still responsive. I can still unlock and open apps and swipe the screen, etc. Does anyone know what is wrong and what needs to be replaced? Please help!

your LCD has gone bad. this is a fairly easy repair, but there are a few places you need to be VERY careful or you can break things (like your power button)
the Nexus One has TWO different models of LCD and you HAVE to use the one that was originally in your phone.
One is made by Samsung and is fairly common/easy to find. its gonna run you about $30-50
There is also an LCD made by Sony which is a little more difficult to find (and mostly used on the Desire) but it costs anywhere up to $100+ so lets hope thats not yours :]
if you arent comfortable doing the repair there is a company called Cell Phone Repair that has stores in almost every state and they even take mail orders if you are not located near one.

He told you everything in detail already, but if you are a newbie and have never done things like this, i suggest you find some other people to get your phone repaired, it cost much less to pay a screen repair fee than get a new one

Dropped captivate, screen had purple spots, then black :(

Hello
I recently dropped my Samsung Captivate. First time it had purple spots on the screen in 1 day the whole screen went purple and the next day the whole screen went black The sensor and everything else is working.
How do you think, what may be the issue of this? is the screen completely screwed or there may be another, less important damage.

My guess is that you'll have to replace the digitaliser. You can do it yourself or contact mobiletechvideos.com for the job.
If you have any experience in it though, you can try opening your phone and see if anything isn't correctly connected.

did you mean the whole lcd?
Pretty sure it would be easier to replace the digitizer + screen, since I think they're glued together on the captivate? (correct me if I'm wrong).
It's about $75. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Cap...izer-i896-AT-T-Galaxy-S-Display-/160787040070

Yeah, I'd like to grab a spare if they are sitting that cheap now.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app
As far as I've seen, the cheapest I got mine was $80. Bad idea, too many issues, wasted money. Buying anywhere but swappa they're about 150$+. Swappa has one for $135 (hoping to buy that one actually, but either have to wait a week and hope someone doesn't buy it, or sell my pantech crossover faster so I have the money haha).

You just have to put "i897" or similar as an ebay saved search that notifies you when new products matching that description are posted.
I bought 1 cappy for $60 from ebay seller alltechwholesale, out of Texas I think. In my experience, they do a good job inspecting the phones first so you know what your going to get. In my experience and many others, the phone arrived in better condition than described....Then I picked up two more sold together on ebay for $70 that were listed as one bad digitizer and the other bad charge port. I got them as parts phones. The one with the "bad digitizer" ended up being just a bad search button because the screen lifted on that corner a little. A 50 cent tube of adhesive fixed that. Then the second of the two just had a dirty charge port and a squirt of crc electronics cleaner fixed it...Now I have a main phone, a backup flashed to be identical, and a media device!!
After taking this phone completely apart a few times it gets pretty easy to see it really is a mini computer and most of the major parts can be bought on ebay for decent prices and replaced fairly easy....The ribbons that connect the various parts can bend and break easily so that is something to keep in mind. I broke the ribbon for the headphone jack assembly but a little hunting on ebay and I had one on it's way for $1.50 after shipping lol.

Haha yes, I can relate to the mini computer aspect. Just spent my day repairing about 8 hp Touchsmarts, the cappy compared to that, is a dream lmao. Much less to deal with . I planned on using the cappy I have now as a spare part phone anyway, unless I can somehow get it to work. But I didn't know about the whole ebay thing. I shall do that now, thanks a TON :fingers-crossed:
EDIT: Just checked alltechwholesale ebay store, SO MANY CAPPYS FOR SALE!!! All around the same price, seems they put it up for 0.99 and someone keeps jacking it up to $70 shortly after. My only thing -- I hate auctions . But great share and bookmarked

yeah, alltech is just auctions but I just took time to read conditions and saved a bunch and you'll find that they go for different prices depending on what's wrong and even depending on the day or time of day lol......That's why I suggested saving the search too. I use the ebay app and when there is new listings of my saved searches I get a notification so I go and look. If your quick, You can possibly snag a "buy it now" at a decent price depending on the condition your looking for. I really couldn't believe I ended up with 3 100% working phones and maybe I just got lucky, but I'd say it's worth a try lol.
I'd say it was a combination of good research, and amazing luck hahaha. But I do appreciate it a lot, thanks for the info, cheers

Sorry we kind of got off the subject, But for the digitizer try what Bwolf said about the connections.
Once when I was testing the power button I soldered on my old cappy I didn't get one of the ribbons all the way on (i believe it was the ribbon near the power button), and the screen flashed a few different colors.
There is at least one probably more youtube vids with pointers on how to get the cappy apart in a way that wont do damage.
I know there's a tare-down guide here, and there was a YouTube video where someone replaced the screen, if I can find it on my history I'll edit this post

i have checked and now i am sure, that the screen is broken. I live in a state, that is not supported by paypal and and where can i buy used captivate for parts with my credit card?
The only place I can think of would be ebay, if you can find a seller who accepts things other than paypal. Or you can try craigslist.
