This has been asked before, but I mean stories where people actually went to an HTC service themselves, and didn't just send their phone for exchange at the stores they bought the phone from.
I guess I'm just pissed my ol' rooted Desire can still do some of the stuff my One can't yet but am rather worried about the whole process of rooting and then coming back to a state as close as possible to stock, since it's an awfully expensive phone after all and voiding the warranty would be tragic. I had problems with the Desire as well and sent it for repairs since it came from some faulty lot, and this One isn't exactly flawfree either, so I expect some problems down the road.
Thanks.

Hello everyone, a couple of days ago i bricked my G1 trying to flash the SPL [silly me...] and sadly the only option to fix this, is to replace the motherboard. Now i go two options:
buy a physically damaged g1 [for around...60$] from ebay?
or
Send my bricked phone to HTC for repair? since its still under warranty.
-If i send it to HTC im just going to say "i left my phone charging one night and the next day, it was just on the G1 screen"
**sorry for double post, i couldn't delete my other thread**
On the one hand, sending it in for warranty work for something that was clearly your fault is dishonest and illegal. On the other hand, HTC deserves it for not providing updated drivers.
I'm not advocating breaking the law, just venting my frustration in dealing with them....
if your for doing it yourself then sure, go ahead. I found that buying an new G1 was much easier for me xD(ebay)

Yeah I dealt with HTC before and believe me its not pretty, that's why i don't have much remorse for them, But that aside I know its my fault and i should pay full price for it, but its barely going to cost them anything to fix my issue.
-Im just worried if they actually going to look inside the phone's software.

Unlikely..
I previously bricked a G1, and was able to return it to T-mobile with no questions asked. (it was within the 14 days, and I had to ship it to customer care.)
I know it's against HTC's warranty, but it is NOT against t-mobile's warranty to root/ect. (At least from what I read from their ToS.) As long as the screen doesn't have any scratches, there is no visible damage, and the LDI is white, T-Mobile may actually process the warranty swap for you.
Though if your device if out of warranty, or not on T-Mobile you may be out of luck
So, a few weeks ago I accidentally dropped my Nexus on concrete and it spider-webbed the screen :/
At the time, I was too broke to send it to HTC so I sent it to another company for a screen repair. They repaired the screen and sent it back, but afterwards, it would not boot up. This did not happen before I sent it to them. So my real question is, would HTC warranty this, or would operating on the device itself for a screen repair (what the company did) void the warranty?
Check your warranty information through the company? I'd be furious if that happened to me. If push comes to shove, don't mention anything to HTC about it being repaired by thirdparty. What can it hurt if they find out, you already have a broken Nexus
If the company isn't HTC authorized then its prob voided, you should contact the company you sent it to!
Yeah, tell me about it. I am pretty furious. I bought it un-subsidized.
Unhelpful to you now, but def invest in screen protectors in the future, they can keep this crap from happening!
Anyone have any experience yet getting a Captivate replaced through the warranty department at 800-801-1101?
My sister got her phone on launch day, past few days the screen has really been acting up, and it's now just outside the 30 day store return period.
Anybody try getting a replacement from the warranty department? I'm figuring they have replacements available but I want to check before I waste my time calling in.
When my first captivate was randomly shutting down and the store I purchased it at was having a hard time keeping them stocked I called ATT and the guy said they absolutely could just send me another, but urged me to go to the store, call him back, and let him on the phone with the clerk so he could credit my return immediately and I could go elsewhere to buy another that same day, thus not eating anymore of my 30 days. So yeah, long story short, they can replace it right away from what I was told.
screw att. lol
go to the nearby att service center and replace it.
Several months ago, I woke up one morning to a phone that refused to charge, power on, or otherwise do anything.
Walked into an AT&T Warranty place, 30 minutes later, left with a new phone.
I purchased a captivate back in December at Sam's club and luckily haven't had any real issues with it(1010 build). My wifes been bugging me since then, that she wanted one, so I just bought another one off craigslist (0610 build).
I was curious to see what anyones thoughts are on this.
1st) The craigslist one has a small crack in the plastic casing around the charger door, so the door is kinda sunk in a little, but still works properly. I'm just a little worried that down the road it may become an issue.
2nd) It seams to have some of the gps issues. When running stock it will hardly pick up anything. I flashed a few other roms on it incorporating the various gps fixes, and Paragon seams to work best. But it still wont pull in a tight lock.
So my question is:
Do you think I could do a warranty exchange on the Craigslist one through the Att repair center? Basically pretending its the one I purchased through Sam's or will they be able to figure out that there 2 different phones?
Well, that's fraud but if you feel you must I would just play dumb like you didn't know and must have mixed up the phones. Heh
Not likely since they will have the IMEI record of the original purchaser. But go ahead and try. Come back and tell us how it worked out.
I have seen where many have gotten at&t to warranty their phone even though it was not purchased from them.
Try samsung, their stupider

Of course they will warranty a phone purchased by the original owner from another authorized retailer (I bought mine from Radio Shack and AT$T replaced the first 2), but they have zero obligation to warranty a phone to a 3rd party purchaser that bought the phone used. Most warranties are not transferable and are only good to the original purchaser.

I was referring to people who have bought via Craigslist and eBay as that was what was being discussed. I know they have no obligation but have read many people say they have.
Thanks anyway for your expert insight :/
Fried my phone the other day and had the power off issue.... went into my local AT&T warranty center and they hooked me up with a Refurb in about 20 minutes - no questions asked.
IF you have insurance and it's within the 1rst year of the phone's life they should replace it as long as it's not water damaged related.
(And... I had Serendipity back on it when I got home much to my wife's chagrin)
Note: The kid actually seemed to know what he was talking about too strangely enough. Knew about the IMEI range issue and claimed that the refurbs - even if they have the problematic range should be find as they replaced teh internal hardware.
I have a 1011 build now - and it seems to be working great (sans typical GPS BS)

There are authorized AT&T resellers on eBay. Craig's list is pretty much used only. Since AT$T has acknowledged a manufacturing defect issue with some of these phones, they will probably replace ones that fall within the affected IMEI range regardless where/when it was purchased. You may have to badger them a bit, but they generally prefer to just exchange it rather than lose a customer. Unfortunately, as the OP has told us, this particular phone has some visible physical damage. On that basis AT$T is unlikely to replace it for free as they will probably say any malfunction is related to that damage and not any manufacturing defect. That's my expert insight on it.

If you don't know how to spell "they're," maybe you shouldn't be calling anyone stupid.

phone return
i bought my phone off craigslist used, and when i bricked it as a newbie, called samsung for any info. as it was under a year old they took it back and repaired it free of charge. thank you! lol!
You'll either be completely out of luck and get a refurbished phone that will break in 91 days, or get a brand new phone with the same 90 day warranty that will take roughly 10 months to break.
I got lucky; the first refurbished replacement that I got was dead on arrival, so it gave me leverage to scream at ATT for being crap.
You can tell if your phone is refurbished or new by looking at the label under the battery cover; if it is white with ugly font and no indication of the Samsung logo, it's refurbished. If the logo is present, your phone is new.
Recently my heaphone jack started malfunctioning so I called HTC and they said they would send me a replacement and as long as mine did not have any damage that was out of warranty, it would (basically) be free of charge. My phone should not have any physical damage that is out of warranty but I am wondering if, when they turn it on and see that it has been rooted, if that will fall under non-warranty damage.
Basically, i am about to return my phone for a new one, and am wondering if I should revert the phone back to stock and attempt to re-lock the bootloader or if it would even matter considering the problem I have is with the hardware?
You can't re-lock the bootloader but you can revert to stock. This guide should do the job.
Okay, thanks. I thought I had seen a thread about re-locking the bootloader at some point but I guess it must have been a work in progress or something. Plus, even though I searched before, I searched different terms after posting this and saw that a lot of people have returned their unlocked N1's and had no additional charges, as long as they reverted back to stock. So I guess that's what I will do. Really impressed with HTC's customer service!
So my friend has a One and lives in Europe. His headphone jack just stopped working, he is completely stock. Since he is in Albania and bought the phone second hand, can he send it to HTC for repairs? The phone is supposedly still under warranty, right? Would HTC do it for free?

Warranties usually don't transfer between owners - not always the case, but I would leave out the second owner part. I've always had good luck just calling or emailing a company when I have warranty issues. I've even got companies to fix stuff past warranty for free by being polite and clearly explaining in a way that shows my issues aren't caused by misuse, abuse, etc. Phone works best (gets the most empathy). Definitely try this before doing anything that would void warranty absolutely, like cracking open the phone yourself or using some random "expert" to fix it.
