[Q] Speaker off! - Galaxy S Advance I9070 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I made the official Jelly Bean 4.1.2 update and later I have noticed that no voice comes from the speaker. After the update I have been able to listen music several times but the speaker was not working when bellringing and later the speaker became not working.
The bell ring was not a standard melody (android melodies i mean). I changed it to the standard "over the horizon" melody. The speaker started to operate againg. I reset to the first not standard melody the speaker crashed and from then on i can hear no voice from the speaker.
By the way, there is no problem at earphones. Whenever i unplug the earphones, the music player goes to pause mode.
The hardware check utility ( *#0*# I mean) also gives no symptom and behaves as if it is working properly. I don't think this is a hardware problem but i also don't know how to solve this.
Waiting for your help immediately.
Thanx in advance for your help.

First and most importatnt thing after going from 2.3.6 to 4.1.2 i to do FACTORY RESET. Do it in recovery, and share what happend after.
Ofcourse you will loose data like SMS, contacts, instaled apps... So backup it before doing factory reset.

Thanx for your interest.
I made factory reset, i mean wipe data and wipe cache. there is still no voice. I think you will make an inference of a hardware problem, but i must also mention that i succeeded to make it operating without any recovery.

How did you wipe data? You have option in recovery to do FACTORY RESET. Do that.

I recovered the speaker sound. came and went again. It started to work but with a high volume sound it went again with a sizzle. It's probably a driver problem...

I don't think it to be a hardware problem. Rather, it looks to be a driver problem or OS limitation.

[Q][i9000] Rear Speaker Problem after Flash

Hi Everyone,
I've searched through the i9000 section and have not found a solution to my problem.
I have a problem with my rear speaker on my i9000 after flashing to the stock XXJVU 2.3.6 rom using Odin. I have sound through the headphones, and the front speaker but no sound through the rear speaker (i.e. I cannot hear the phone ring).
Prior to the flash I was running a cooked rom (from Rom Kitchen) JS8 (2.2.1) with the speedmod k13c kernel with the lagfix enabled. This was working fine and the speaker was working correctly prior to the flash.
Before I flashed I attempted to disable the lagfix through CWM, however, towards the end of the lagfix the phone got stuck during the testing proportion after converting everything back to RFS. When disabling the lagfix I had forgotten if the /system was converted to ext4, and I did not convert that back to RFS (to my mistake the /system was most likely still ext4), but converted the rest back to RFS.
After a long time I took out the battery and restarted the phone. The phone booted into the rom fine, however, all the settings had been reset (just like when you factory reset the phone). I assume the reason was that it did not restore the backup of my settings when it got stuck during the disabling of the lagfix. I do not remember if I had sound when I booted back into the rom.
I then turned off my phone and flashed the XXJVU stock rom via Odin (pda/modem/csc/pit with re-partition selected), and then cleared all the caches and factory reset before and after installing the Semaphore 2.5.0 kernel. Both of the flashing processes completed without any error. When I did boot into the new rom I realised that I no longer had any sound, however everything else seems to be operating fine.
List of things I have tried to fix this issue:
Factory reset (both through the menus and *2767*3855#)
Wiped and factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache many times
Tested the speaker through *#0673# (Audio Test Mode) and get no sound
Tested the speaker through *#0283# (Audio Loopback Control) and get no sound
Taking the back cover off the phone and pressing the speaker module whilst playing music to see if it was a loose connection
Flashed the firmware back to two stock roms from my carrier (2.2 and 2.3.3 version from Optus) still no sound (everything else worked fine)
Flashed the XWJW1 stock firmware and still no sound
Tried inserting and removing headphone plug into the jack multiple times. In case there was an issue with the phone thinking there were headphones still plugged in.
Turned on "logger" in Semaphore kernel and using alogcat to see if there were any errors related to the rear speaker (nothing I could see)
I am now thinking it could be a hardware issue, however, it just seems too coincidental that the rear speaker breaks whilst I am flashing a new rom on the phone. Might have to open it up and have a look at the speaker module more closely.
Any ideas anyone?
For those who find it tldr
Summary:
Disabled lagfix on 2.2 rom process got stuck and battery had to be removed
Flashed new rom as phone still booted to XXJVU and noticed there was no sound in rear speaker
Tried many things to try to get phone sound working again but have run out of ideas
Thanks everyone!
Outcome:
I have bought a new speaker module and installed it and it WORKS!
Buy a new phone, bro
That is a best ideas ever)

Sounds very intresting.
I got the same problem after flashing Slim ICS 2.8 to 2.9.
Revert back with my Nandroid Backup to 2.8, that i done before flashing ,but still the same, Before everythings worked fine.
I also suspect Free Spirit Fm and the options in audio --> Method --> Galaxy S ALSA/ICS (DANGER) , but this option always wored fine since some month.

Yes it is a very odd problem.
I have yet to open up the phone and check the connection of the rear speaker module. Everything is working fine except the rear speaker.
At least I now know I'm not the only person with this issue. What else have you tried to fix your problem? Tried some of the fixes that I have tried?
this is actually what I've done
revert back to Nandroid backup
Delete cache of some apps like Dsp manager and Spirit FM as i suspect it to broke my Rear Speakers (but maybe nothings releated)
Factory Reset and Wipe Everythings
Change Kernel to Glich V14
Now i also open up the phone and check the connection, everythings seem to be good
I'm now going to buy a new Rear Speaker and try to change it, maybe it's just a coincidence , But very strange .....
Yes, I find it hard to believe that my rear speaker stops working at the exact time that I'm flashing a new rom. I was going to buy a new speaker, but decided that I'll wait until I open it up and have a proper look. Just trying to find some motivation to go and do this, it has been about two weeks of trying and I've almost given up.

Wow awesome!
How is the quality of the speaker compared to the original? I'm debating if I pay more to buy a genuine rear speaker or just get a generic one.
How difficult was it to open up the phone and replace the speaker?
same issue but slightly different
Hey guys, I have the same issue with my i9000 after a fresh wipe and flashing the latest CM9 nightly build as of april 2nd ( update-cm-9-20120402-NIGHTLY-galaxysmtd-signed.zip ) and the rear speaker doesn't work for ringing or music playback, but I noticed it works for putting calls on speakerphone -- is this just me? Should I replace the speaker?

If the speaker is working in some cases then you won't be in the same situation as us. Ours didn't work at all, no matter what situation.
Have you tried flashing it back to a stock rom?
edit: stupid question but you have checked the "Sound" settings > "Volume" > "Media volume" and "Incoming call volume"?
Same problem I got today when woke up in the morning, I wonder why didn't alarm ring today. Then I tried flashing ROMs etc etc. watching videos on the youtube, did google and find this post.
I think I will have to buy new speaker.
Any idea?

G'day,
Have you tried the methods I tried in my first post?
Factory reset (both through the menus and *2767*3855#)
Wiped and factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache many times

Flashed the stock firmware.
Tried inserting and removing headphone plug into the jack multiple times. In case there was an issue with the phone thinking there were headphones still plugged in.
I'm still waiting for my replacement speaker in the post. I will update if this fixes the issue.
Good luck!
Do you get ANY sound from the rear-speaker? I have a similar issue (loss of audio after flashing new ROM) but it is the handset speaker. After some troubleshooting, I found that there it was still working but was ULTRA low volume. With a number of tweaks, you can just hear calls if the other person is yelling. With headphones/rear-speaker, very thing is fine.
My next troubleshooting step is to find a way to repartition the phone and reflash a stock ROM. That's about all I have left as I have tried all other options.
Zimzum
Just an update people.
Just installed the replacement speaker module... and it..... WORKS!!
flash an official ROM using Odin
I need some help here. My i9000 seems to work through the rear speaker ONLY??? During hands free calls the thing is MUCH louder when turned around and listening from the rear. All ringing, alarms, etc. seem to emanate from the rear speaker. Is it difficult to replace the front speaker? I have cm9 Nightlies flashed (up to date). It's been like this for a few months already.

[Q] [HELP] Sound only comes when volume is 30

Until last night my HD7 was working fine. When I woke up this morning and plugged in the headphones, to my surprise it wasnt working and I wasnt able to listen anything.
I took out the headphones and played again and again same thing. The volume was at 25 and even the keyboard pop sounds didnt work.
I then made the volume go all the way to 30 and it worked again but the problem is that the phone will only give audio out when its on full volume.
If I set the volume at 29 the audio again stops working.
Can anyone tell me what can be wrong ?
I dont think its a hardware defect and I don't wanna go ahead and do a hard reset immediately. Can anyone think of any solutions ?

Weird ''No Sound'' Problem!

I bought my Incredible S from Virgin Mobile Canada last summer (I live in Turkey). I've got a weird problem for about a week: there is no sound! When I play videos on Youtube, when I play games, when I plugged in the headphones, when the phone is supposed to ring (there is only vibration)... there is no sound when the phone is turning on, as well.
It happened suddenly and it didn't fall down on the ground recently.
Another weird thing is: when I accept a call / or call someone, the speaker is automatically on and I have to turn it off. The speaker is working well on phone calls by the way.
I checked almost everything in the settings, and everything seems normal. I don't think it's about the hardware but I want to ask you about this problem.
Software Info: [I haven't rooted or done anything to my phone, I use it as its first day settings (yeah, even the Android version, don't ask why, I can't receive any updates for one year for some reason and it's killing me!)]
Android version -> 2.3.3
HTC Sense Version -> 2.1
Baseband V. -> 20.2805.30.08AU_3805.04.03.27_M
Thank you for your help.
I got rid of automatically turning on problem of speaker. I managed to hear the sound in the opening scene as well (after I took the battery off - 1 minute wait - and place it again).
But I have still no sound. Is there a possiblity of blown speaker? How can I test if it is blown or not? If it is blown, would the headphones still be working?

Blown speakers shouldn't have any affect on your headphone jack.
Sorry I couldn't help you any further
EDIT: this might sound silly but is your phone on silent?
Did you check all volumes i.e; Ringer, Notification, Media, Voice, System.
There are more but I think these are all the relevant ones.
Just check if any of these are set down to mute
Hit Thanks if I helped

Hi,
Any progress of your sound problem ?
I have an exact problem. Phone speaker suddenly stop working. No ring tone (can't hear incoming call), can't play music, can't hear from headset. But the power up sounds ok , when the HTC logo came up. Tried restart and all sort of setting to no avail. However, I can hear the speaker rings when I call someone and speak to hear them normally.
Very frustrating. Have not done factory reset yet ... that will be the last resource ...

[Q] Xperia Z default earpiece speaker volume

Hi Guy's, I seem to be experiencing the opposite problem to what everyone else on this forum is experiencing.
Whenever I make or receive a call, the ear volume is always set to the highest which is too loud especially when in quiet environments as everyone around me can hear what the other person on the end of the line is saying, plus it almost deafens me.
Even when I turn the volume down during a call, it always defaults back to maximum volume during the next call.
I looked under the "volumes" section in the settings but can't seem to see an option for this.
Can anyone help me on this please.
Thanks

Something sure seems to be messed up, try backuping your data and then do a factory reset and check if the issue is associated with the rom itself, if thats the case you should install some other rom or try any mod that modifies your musicfx, like purexaudio.

Thanks I forgot to mention that I am running the stock firmware that came with the phone. It was on android 4.1 when I purchased it and I have since updated it to 4.2.2 but the problem persists.
I would like to know if this happens with other Xperia Zs. Does the ear volume stay on the last level you set it to or does it reset every time a new call is made?
Once I know what it's supposed to do, I will try a factory reset before getting involved with custom roms.

No, Its supposed to stay exactly where you want it to be. Don't worry about anything, just install a recovery like TWRP or CWM first, make a full nandroid backup before you decide to do anything messy so that you can always return to where your z is right now to the very exact state. I would recommend you that you should try a custom ROM instead too, monxDIFIED and EXCELSUS both of them are very good custom roms based on stock.

Ear speaker stopped working after update to 5.1

Well I updated my Moto X XT1092 to 5.1 yesterday. Since then, the ear speaker has stopped working during both incoming calls and outgoing calls. I can hear everything clearly while on loud speaker, however i can't hear a thing while enabling the ear speaker. The person I am talking to can hear everything though. After the update, i cleaned the device using clean master. I haven't done a factory reset yet and haven't done anything in the recovery either, hoping there is an easier fix to it. Can anybody help me fix it?
I am having the exact same issue. But in my case the earpiece worked initially and suddenly stopped working from yesterday. I tried rebooting the phone as well as rebooting in safe mode. Both didnt help. I also tried to clear the cache and data for the phone and dialer app, which didnt help either? I am planning to do a factory reset. Will that have any impact? I was on 5.0 pure edition when i sideloaded the 5.1 soak LPE23.32-14.
I forgot to mention that the earpiece worked initially in my case too. I did make one phone call and everything was fine till that point. And then it all started few minutes later. I did an ota update and I really wasn't expecting such issue. So if clearing cache and the dialler didn't help you fix the issue, I guess our only option is to factory reset. Let me know if factory resetting fixes the issue.

Well, i found this link and it gives instructions on how to fix the earpiece issue...I will give it a go later. I am very surprised that factory reset didn't help either.

UPDATE:Finally got it working after updating to the latest build 23.16.3 posted in the general section
Nothing has worked for me so far. Is your phone xt1905? Well mine is xt1902 and I had updated it through ota before the entire issue started, and the build is 23.16.1. So I guess I'm already on the latest build. Do you have any suggestion regarding what i should do?

Someone over in the Motorola forums suggested checking to see if hearing aid compatibility was enabled in the settings of the dialer, and disabling it if it was.

please note : Go to dialer and disable hearing aid, earpiece will start working.
No need of factory reset
I haven't updated to 5.1 and hearing aid isn't enabled.. Only thing I can think of is the dictionary update wifi required notification being the last thing that was done before losing sound in the ear piece. To remove dictionary updates is there a specific app I can clear data from?

You legend, this worked! I've been trying everything. How the hell did they get enabled during the 5.1 update?
I found it a bit weird that it was working after factory reset and then suddenly stopped.
found this thread because my earpiece stopped working today. stock android 5.1 att moto x 2014. tried a bunch of stuff (hearing aid, wipe cache, reboot,..) didnt work. What did work for me was as simple as it gets. in my settings i turned everything off except cell signal (wifi, blutooth, location, screen rotate...) tried a call it worked. Dont know why or how but it did. havent tried turning everything back on yet. a bit scared to. Hope this helps someone.
!!UPDATE!! I do not think that helped . went out again and turning everything off didnt work.... So i back tracked to what I did before turning everything off. that step got my speaker back again for now at least. What that step was is i called my voicemail and inserted headphones in and out a couple times. I am thinking that the dialer thinks there are headphones plugged in so no speaker. I also believe it has to do with the dialer software since all other sounds and apps come out loudspeaker. using internal speaker test app internal speaker does not work when it is out. If it goes out again i will try headphones in that app to see if that resets it.
on I side note i just realized all my homescreen apps and widgets are gone. they are still installed just not on homescreen
So did anyone reach an effective solution regarding this issue or determined the root cause? It just happened to me today and i have been trying everything i have read online but nothing worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
what finally worked for me was cleaning headphone jack. you can do this at your own risk. i pulled most of cotton off a qtip. put alcohol on it and cleaned it. i did not think this was problem because any app that used the loudspeaker worked even calling worked with speakerphone. so my thinking was it is not dirty but i cleaned it and have not had a problem for about 2 weeks now.

Tried doing that as well, didn't work.
Did anyone else find any solution?
I have wiped cache, cleaned the headphone jack, did the hearing aid thing.
Nothing has worked.

Found the solution, it was water damage actually.
My mom forgot to tell me that water went in through the headphone jack.
And as water conducts electricity the phone thought headphones were plugged in. Cleaning it with a cloth and a toothpick and then shaking the phone a few times fixed it.
I think that's why cleaning your headphone jack fixed it as well affiatic, water went in probably.
My friend is suffering from the same situation.
1. Tried clearing data + cache for dialer app.
2. Hearing aid compatibility disabled.
3. Did factory reset.
Nothing has worked so far.
Can anybody elaborate the solution suggested in the below link? (Im getting 403 error opening the link.)

Have you ever tried to make or receive a call on your Moto X and you hear nothing on the other side, almost as if there isn’t even a connection made? Then when you try to call again, for some reason it works?
If you have experienced this, you also understand how frustrating it can be when you have to hang up and dial again, just to make a simple call. This problem plagued me for months of owning my 2014 Moto X, searching everywhere for a resolution to this hugely annoying problem. It wasn’t only me who was experiencing this issue either. A friend with the same phone was having the exact same problem as I, however it was impacting them even more, since it was used for their business. At this point, I figured that it wasn’t only the both of us experiencing the issue, but potentially many others owners as well. After much more searching, I came across a similar issue on a different phone, which listed some ideas to fix the issue. To my surprise, when I completed the process, the problem was fixed and has yet to return. Here is what I did…
Fix Inability to Hear Calls on Moto X
I had tried many different things to fix this issue, such as switching from Dalvik to Art, then back to Dalvik again. Rebooting the phone also didn’t seem to help much at all. Now for what fixed the error (scroll below for the steps).
First, I wanted to clear all cache, as that can sometimes fix simple issues. After I had entered the Recovery menu and cleared the cache, I noticed the problem had stayed away for a bit longer than a reboot, but eventually it came back again. Next, I put the phone into Safe Mode. Once the phone rebooted into Safe Mode, I shut down the device and plugged it in to my wall charger for two hours. To my surprise, after two hours when I turned my phone back on and tried making a call, I could hear the other side. The problem was gone and has yet to return, months later.
Anybody that has experienced this same issue, should try the steps below. It may just make your phone much less frustrating to operate.
Putting the Moto X into Recovery Mode to Delete Cache:
1. Power off your phone, by pressing down the power button until the power menu pops up and selecting*Power Off.

2. Wait a few seconds, then proceed to next step.
3. Hold down the*Volume Down*for a second, the while still holding down the*Volume Downbutton, also hold down the*Power Button*for about 3 seconds, then let go of*Power Button. If you did this correctly, you will see the*Boot Menu.
[http://salloiacono]4. Press the*Volume Down*button, until you have*Recovery*highlighted. Then pressVolume Up*to select*Recovery.
5. Your phone will appear to reboot and you should see this little guy.

Don’t worry, you didn’t break anything.
6. Now you must enter the*Recovery Menu.
– For Android 4.4.4: Hold down the*Volume Up*button for about 10-15 seconds and while holding that down, press the*Power Button. You should see a new menu pop up.
– For Android 5.0: Hold down the*Power Button*for a few seconds and while holding that down, press the*Volume Up*key. You should see a new menu pop up.

7. Press*Volume Down*until you have*Wipe Cache Partition*highlighted, then press thePower Button.*Your phone will now reboot. It is time for the next step.
Putting your Moto X into Safe Mode
1. Once your phone has fully rebooted, you are now ready to put your phone into*Safe Mode. Hold down the*Power Button*until thePower Menu*pops up. Now press and hold thePower Off*button.
2. After a few seconds, you should see a new window pop up warning about*Safe Mode. Press*OK. Your phone will now reboot intoSafe Mode.

3. Once your phone reboots into*Safe Mode,Power Off*your phone.
4. With your phone powered off, plug it into your wall charger for 2 hours.
5. After 2 hours, you may unplug your phone and turn it back on. Now you should be able to make and receive calls without the issues you were experiencing before!
Hope this works as well for you as it did for me!
