These are the correct instruction for your case, taken from the OP of the Rom.
DON'T flash FROM ANY SAMSUNG ICS OR ROMS BASED ON SAMSUNG KERNELS (my CM9, AOSP, etc)
Flash any stock GB rom with odin / or any GB kernel, and reboot into recovery once again before flashing this
Install Rom: http://d-h.st/sGz 171.14 MB
Install HYBRID Gapps: http://tjohansson.is-a-geek.com/file...0511-fixed.zip
Wipe caches, factory reset is a must if you're coming from another rom than CM9
Hope that helps mate!
Yyyyyy no so what i must do?

You have to gain root once you have flashed a GB Rom via PC Odin.
Then you can proceed to flash Paranoid.
Have I lost full root????

I came from ICS rocket rom with bad kernel - flashed abyss kernel, rebooted recovery, did full wipe, flashed paranoid android and flashed gapps. All seemed well until I realised I can't paste into /system, am I right in thinking I only have partial root, is there any way to gain full root without wiping back to GB rooted rom and starting over????????
Please Help!!!!

You don't have full root, that is certain. The only way you're gonna regain it is by
going back to rooted GB, then back to ICS.

Thanks, that's kind of what i thought.
I have a nandroid backup of rocket rom v22 where I was fully rooted before. If I restore back into it, what's the best method of getting back to PA and still be fully rooted - I have mobile odin pro BTW if that's any use?

Do not do restores through a partially working Recovery, you might mess up your phone.
Do this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25285584&postcount=3
After you are done injecting the CWMR, go to Paranoid thread and follow the instructions.
OMFG i'm an idiot
Well durrrr, just realised I hadn't checked the option for mounting system as writable - I am fully rooted on what is easily the best ROM I've used EVER!!!
Thanks a lot for the replys - this is a much better place thanks to people like you

Do you have vcf backup of contacts? I personally have my contacts on google contacts, so whenever I flash a new ROM, contacts restore by syncing google account.

Hi,
big unsavvy discaimer here, yet I managed to root my 2.3.6.Note a few months ago (CWM also installed) needing the root for a backlight notification app which I'm not using after all (I currently have NoLED which requires no root I think)
Having now installed Kies on my pc and hooked up the Note, I am offered an update to 4.0.4 which I'd like to do
1.Is that safe in spite of the rooting? mind you, I don't object to the loss of root that I understand is going with this update method.
just looking for the least time- and effort consuming way to upgrade now, I am sifting through a lot of the technical info here but the wealth of knowledge to digest before I can safely juggle roms seems a bit daunting right now.
2.Also, don't quite remember if I flashed my kernel too at the time of rooting (i was following a comprehensive how-to sheepishly), is there any way I can tell? (phone info attached)
3.Last question, will the kies update leave my apps and settings untouched?
thanks much!
d.
pls delete this second post sorry
Just download a 4.0.4 rom from sammobile if you like stock and flash it via pc Odin..
If you like custom roms go development section, download a rom then go cwm do all wipes and flash it
Do not use Kies to upgrade.. Several things could go wrong and you will end up with a brick..

no further precautions necessary? and will it install the ics over my current apps and settings? the root is no issue here?

No precautions needed while going from gb to ics via Odin.. You will lose root.. (never wipe/factory reset from stock ics kernel or you will end up with a brick
For the custom roms.. Just be sure you are in a safe kernel (speedmod /notecore) before wiping because as I said before.. You will end up with a brick if you wipe from stock ics kernel
You can wipe and flash any custom rom from gingerbread because gingerbread kernels are safe to do so.. As notecore and speedmod are

If you are on gingerbread the kernel version does not matter.. To check it just go settings>about>kernel version
Speedmod its an ics kernel.. So you gotta be on ics to be able to use it... But if you are rooted in gingerbread and you want a custom rom you can use cwm recovery and flash the custom rom straight... Custom roms includes safe kernels.. So you will be safe..
I really encourage you to stay away from stock ics kernel.. And yeah flashing ics via Odin on top of your gingerbread will keep your apps

getting closer, bear with me. I am desperately trying to find out what kernel I am currently running. I have opened another thread just for that
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856345
then, all the info I need to act on your advice is- can I keep that very kernel and just flash ICS (i will go with your recommendation to select a custom one) via cvm recovery? i.e. from a rooted 2.3.6. SGN on N7000XXKK9-CL725676 [email protected]#2 (readout from the settings page)
I am obstinate at following up, sorry, but thats because the instructions come pretty casually to the novice, yet the warnings on not ommitting crucial steps abound.

Yes you can flash any custom rom ics(or whatever) from your kernel.. The new rom will flash in the process its own kernel.. You have a rooted kernel wich might have cwm.. Download the desired rom to your sd, backup all your photos /videos/documents to your pc... I encourage you to do a fresh install of your apps to avoid further issues when restoring them..
Then press volume up+power+home buttons until you get to the n7000 screen then release to boot up to cwm, once there wipe data and cache then go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache... Then go back install zip from sd card and flash the rom you downloaded and reboot... That's it

I have chosen RocketROM v10 - ICS - 4.0.4 - XXLRK for this update (more or less randomly, but it is getting good reviews). In the instructions, it is mentioned that coming from a rooted GB-rom, i should install
abyss kernel 4.2. first, then do a FULL wipe (does that include the dalvik thing too?)
I mention this because these are steps not explicitly included in your last instructions, just trying to connect the last dots. If you confirm that process, I am going ahead!;
muchas gracias!

yes, it even shows up on my apps list
THAT much I do remember from my first venture into messing with the note!
thanks for worrying though;
btw I now hear the stock ics is even leaner and as configurable (with tb) as the rocket rom I downloaded
would the flashing process for the stock ics (DL from the samsung site?) be exactly the same as for custom roms?
thanks!

Nop.. It's not the same.. I'd say it's even easier but risky.. As if something goes wrong while flashing it you will end up with a brick..
If you do like stock feel less bloated with a decent performance and battery life.... Go for the cleanote rom.. HERE

ok I downloaded that one. Just to be sure, it says:
"Installation:
1.Install from any rooted ROM with a safe kernel (notecore, speedmod, franco, CF). Installation script will automatically wipe /Cache and Dalvik cache for you. You can format /Data as well if you want a completely clean stock rom install with full root and performance enhancements.
Install the usual way though CWM
OR
2.If you are on a stock rom, follow the following instructions
Flash stock ICS rom in PC odin
boot phone
reboot to download mode
flash Notecore kernel in PC odin
reboot phone
copy rom ZIP to sd card
reboot to CWM
perform a factory reset (format /data / cache)
install rom ZIP"
Do I fall under the first group (rooted rom with safe kernel)? because my rom itself is still stock
just making sure
thx

You are on gb that's a safe kernel so.. You fall in the first group and you can follow my instructions or those.

If you already flashed the rom.. Download the radio to your sd, reboot to cwm then flash it.. No need to wipe anything for flashing the radio

From safe kernels wiping data its safe.. It will only delete your apps/system apps and it's data to avoid further issues with battery...
You can flash the radio after flashing the rom and before rebooting..
If you reboot into android without flashing the radio you gotta go back to cwm to do so.. Just the same way you flashed the rom but not wiping anything
Now go ahead and flash lol.. Want to see you happy with your note rocking ics already xD

ok ok just one LAST question;
instructions say the install routine performs the cache and dalvik wipes automatically.
that means I just do "install zip from sd card" right away, correct?
chronologically, where does the "wipe data/factory reset" which you recommend come in? before or after that?
it's coming, it's coming...;

Wow, this is weird..
Sorry, i can't help u a lot, but i can provide my step to flash those ROM:
1. Make sure your device is rooted and CWM 5 is installed
2. Place ROM in your SD card
3. Boot to CWM, wipe data, wipe dalvik cache
4. Select install from SD card
6. Then wipe data and wipe dalvik cache once again
7. Reboot your phone
Hope this is useful.

You just have to wipe dalvik, cache and factory reset after flashing, and even that is also not a compulsary step.

another idea:
full wipe => flash rom => start => get again to cwm => flash same rom again (no wipe or anything)
dont know if this has eny effect, but i heard sometimes flashing twice fixes some problems. might work for you to

I have the same trouble. I've done factory reset, wiped data, cache, dalvik but network does not do anything... I restored stock rom from samsung-updates with Odin, but dont boot up. Then I tried again cyanogenmod but the network is off again...
Any idea?

When you downgrade with Odin, after instalation is done go to recovery mode and do factory reset again. I am not sure what cause that problem on CM, I read some users from Argentina had problem with it.

Hello!
I have installed Cocore kernell (8.2 and 8.6.4) a few times in my stock JB rom (LQL) but when I install CM 10.2 and if i need to go back to my stock rom i tried to restore my backup made it with the CWM that comes with cocore, it's pass without problems but when the rom start, stop a lot of process making impossible to work in it, and start in configuration wizard
someone have the same problem, there is a way to fix it?
Thanks in advance guys!!!
If you are on Android 4.3 after restoring your backup you need to reboot to recovery (recovery will change as you are on Cocore kernel) and then => format preload, then reboot, should work fine

Format /preload as ext4
download the cocore TWRP kernel, install it, (re-)reboot to recovery, go to advanced (on TWRP, yes, it needs to be TWRP), terminal command, press enter (to select the directory to work from, which should be "/"), and run
make_ext4fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p9
(DANGER: IF YOU FORMAT WHATEVER ELSE IT MAY BRICK YOUR DEVICE, just check that our /dev/block/mmcblk0p9 is 0p9 at the end, it CAN'T BE ANYTHING ELSE.)
Then, go back and onto mount menu, and mount /preload partition. And then just install whatever ROM you want.
I am saying this because re-installing the stock ROM from ODIN can be dangerous if the power it's cut out or the USB is suddenly disconnected. Just format preload partition (there is nothing critical there, so it's safe, or safer than ODIN that's it)

Yes, since some version of CM10.2 TeamJanice uses preload partition for swap. So it must be formated, if that do not work - flash stock JB.

Thanks for your attention
I have a question
Then the steps to back to stock rom would be:
1-recovery (cwm)
2-format preload
3 restore stock
?????
Thanks in advance and sorry my poor English

You can go back like that, or you can flash stock fb, root, install cocore and restore your backup (if you want to go back to your backup).
