First I want to say I know there is no way to predict this but since the phone is popular I figured there would be enough developers and users interested in getting this done.
How long Does everyone think it might take?
1 Month?, 2 Months?, 3 Months?, 6 Months?, 8 Months?, 1 Year?
UPDATE: This Question is Specifically for the AT&T Model of the Moto X since it currently has a locked boot loader which to my limited knowledge makes achieving root harder.
Well, Canadian phones are rooted.

As always, eta is "when it's ready." Unless you have the skills and willing to volunteer your time to make a root, I suggest you sit back and enjoy the motoX as is. There's a lot to like.

Maybe if you are getting antsy with wanting it done perhaps you can start a bounty by getting people to put a few bucks into a pool and whoever gets it unlocked and/or rooted gets the prize money.

If I had money left over from buying the phone, I would. I was more curious about what other people think since when I got my SG3 it was about 6 months later and tons of devs had kicked out a bunch of stuff for it already. I didn't know if that pace was typical for popular phones.
I'm going to wait to start a bounty. This is a thriving community and we all want to help each other out. Unless someone finds root and decides to hold out for a bounty (BS) I think we'll find something. Bounties are to grab the attention of people like @djrbliss. That have bigger fish to fry. ( speaking of....come by and show moto up again!!!)

That way developers can gauge the communities willingness to support their work. I'm willing to donate 25$ for root.

I second that and will put up $25 for Root on the D3. I just got it today and I love this thing so far but miss my saved data on all my games from my X

Root is worth at least $25 to me.
I will be receiving my D3 tomorrow, count me in for 25$
Anxiously awaiting root and happy to donate $25 to the cause!
I'm down for at least $50.
I don't really think a show of wallets is what is going to gain root for us , but rather a more targeted effort to get devices into the right folks hands is perhaps more likely to succeed IMO.
Maybe, but I rather think even the most gifted developers can't do anything if there is nothing exploitable. Motorola and Google appearently did do a quite good job. My main hope now is an update or a SBF, which could lead to new ideas ...

I agree. Unless I misunderstood, this is basically a theoretical root 'purse' to whoever roots? This may increase some devs interest in putting their time into it, but IMO moeny is better spent helping the right people get the right tools.
I just have a problem giving someone a device who already has one to work with....when there are developers who don't have a D3 at all.
Personally if I had the knowledge to root a device I would just charge $20 each for the root app/program/directions and then truly get paid for my work. 50 root purchases could make a quick $1000 and assuming this device sells anything like the DX then 800+ could bring in a cool $16,000(there are at least 800 DX's currently using CM7 nightlies).
so give the device to someone who DOESN'T have it?!
I say give it to krazy. He obviously has the will and knowledge.

My intent was not to have myself promoted. I am simply saying how money would be put to a better use.
I have been working with several others, and all of our skills lie in different places, but they all are important. I do currently have a phone, and am not desperately in need of another. It woudl be nice to get a device in the hands of some of the others I have been working with- for example.

A developer working on his own phone isn't going to take any "major" chances since they have to use it as their......well....phone. There is no .sbf file to recover it if bricked, so it's either buying a new one at full retail or seeing if a warranty replacement is possible (though technically it shouldn't be since the user broke the device).
I'd feel more comfortable giving a developer who already has a Droid 3 one to "dev" on, as they are more interested in obtaining root for the device themselves since they want root on their own device (the one they use for calls, txts, etc..).
I have to agree here, the prospect of some cash for doing it is always nice, but we could in theory get it faster if the right people could have the device, but it is all a lot easier said then done..

I don't have any issue with the concept of this, and I signed it, although I don't think moto cares given the size of the actual modding population. However, why do people throw around the word 'rights' so much? Really, it's a right? No it's a want... I know I'll prolly get derided for this but still... Right?

I agree with you 100%.
I still signed.
That's how frustrated I feel at all this. I'm reminded of my time with the orginal milestone. Checking internet every day to see if someone fgured out how to shoehorn froyo onto the thing. For some reason I thought moto would change... maybe it was because they said they would.
Yeah its a long shot for this petition to do anything, I very sincerely doubt it will. But I would love to be wrong. It only takes two seconds to sign it.
Signed also
While I've signed the petition, I have a ready-made solution that nobody has seemed to mention yet... stop buying Motorola devices.
I've enjoyed Moto's offerings since the OG Droid days, mainly because of the superior build quality, but due to Moto's lock down on devices, and their lack of willingness to placate us, the way HTC has done, the D3 will be the last Motorola device I purchase. Let's face it, performance-wise, Moto doesn't build top-notch machines, the screen quality is sub par, and support is non-existent. Build quality is the ONLY thing they have going for them, and with Samsung making moves to improve their own build quality, I don't see any reason to stick around.
Motorola is not going to change their stance on this matter, and as such, the only way we can really make them listen, is by hitting them where it hurts...their wallets. I believe over 10,000 people have signed the petition (not a huge number, compared to global Moto sales), but 10,000 units at $150 each, equates to $1,500,000 in revenue. Again, that number may be small by comparison, but I'm sure a $1.5m decrease would get someone's attention.
My advice to anyone who's upset enough to sign this petition, is to move to a company with a better track record of being development friendly. Quad-core offerings are on the horizon, and a new Nexus device should be spotted around Christmas...I'll be saving my money, and WILL be jumping ship as soon as I can. The Moto journey has been "fun", but it's time to trade build quality for better performance and support. I'm done buying phones that are (essentially) dead on arrival, and obsolete within 3 months of release... I urge the rest of you to follow suit.

As you can see from this post Obsidian... said he will talk to hash about accepting a S4 Active to get his safe strap working. This will allow us to flash roms and multiboot different roms from our active(for more information on how this will work please go to this forum). He is currently working for this for the VZ S4 and seems to be making progress. If he is successful he will consider accepting an active to do the same. It would be cool to get him a Active so he can bug test and help us out. This will really boost the development for our device.... I write this to ask if you guys are willing to join with the community to raise money for his Active. We already have $675 towards a unlocked bootloader, this will give us most if not all the same features and will probably only cost us $400-$500. I hate to do this but below I will @ all the pledge members for the bootloader because some of them said they don't normally check the forums:
Pledges:
texassax $10
JEZZEJAMEZ $20
my-blue-snog-box $10
paleh0rse $10
skeppley $20
daugh016 $10
mnasledov $80
huggstown $100
Total = $260
Goal = $530
(this goal is based off of resent eBay auctions, if the phone costs less than the amount raised then the highest pledge amount will be reduced. Example if the highest pledge is $100 USD and we were $20 over... we would only ask for $80)
If someone wants to donate his phone to hash we can give you the pledge if needed
I'm tight on money myself, but count me in for $10 anyway.
@joshuadjohnson22, are you asking for a consensus as to whether people are willing to say "yeah, this fulfills the terms better than anything else we have come across; let's use the money we pledged for this"? Or are you starting another bounty independent of the bootloader?

This is separate and will probably be the best we will ever get. The bootloader may never be unlocked, this will be a pre-release here's a device now work your magic type of commitment. The bootloader unlock will be nice but with this it will probably not be needed. If you want to remove one pledge for the other I understand fully.
Keep in mind he has not agreed to anything yet. We could get all the money together and he says no or just requests one of us to send him our device... or work with one of our users (the devices should be that different...), this is just to see if we have the money pledge to get him the active if he agrees

I think you're looking into this a little too early..
He was saying something about breaking into the device by using some of the scripts that are needed to be run for the qualcomm chipset to work early in the boot sequence. We have essentially the same ones as the S4. The only thing that would most likely need to be changed is the actual recovery that is booted because we have different LCD drivers.
If you want to buy him an Active just as a sort of "thanks" then by all means go for it but I don't think he will need one in order to complete the mod.. It may well be up to his goodwill to compile us a working version for our device if he doesn't open-source the project which is kind of doubtful here at XDA.
Once again though, I'm not a developer and just another resident idiot so take everything I say with a grain of salt.
Edit: the "resident idiot" thing isn't directed at anybody or meant to be offensive just a little joke

Good point. It appears his team made some base roms for users that work well with the mod, it would be cool if he had some active specific support for us. Either way he may figure out that he could make a simple port for us but it would still be nice to know we have the support to provide a device if it is needed. So if it comes to that we can ship it out right away... but he is smart enough to decide if that will be needed. Either way this is exciting and I hope it works out

Just keep me posted, my donation is good for either solution... or both (I'll pay twice if someone goes on to unlock the actual bootloader, as well).
I've got no real intention of buying an Active at this point - I'm considering a GE S4 with an Obex, but a new phone has been moved to the back burner for now: the possibility of buying a house is priority no. 1 at the moment. I'm leaving my pledge for the bootloader, because I believe in the concept - unlocked bootloaders help us all by driving the dev community - but a workaround really isn't the same to me.
I hope that doesn't come off as sophistry, but either way, I'm not in for this one.

Well a few things with this comment:
1. If the Nexus 5 has US LTE and keeps the same price point but starts with 16 GB I'm sure it will temp many of us...
2. I am sure we will have something by the end of the year/beginning of next year (that is when the Nexus 5 is projected to be released)
3. thanks for your pledge, it has been updated
Money's getting tight here too but I'll throw down $40. It's totally worth being able to run alternate ROMs on this thing. It's too bad ATT did something exclusive with Samsung for this phone because it's really great.

These threads that always ask why "someone else' hasn't done anything are very sad. You complain about reading threads 7 times a day about what can't be done and then you make one yourself? And I've seen your other posts... trolling. So I'm sure your reply will be no less to anyone that doesn't 100% agree with you.
So what exactly, do you want to achieve with this thread? And before telling me to move on, you might want to take your own advice because if you have nothing of value to add, you are worse than any of the people you complain about.

I may not be a mod but I am a seasoned professional and I have been with xda since 2000 somthing.
I know people are upset, I know because you can't root that shiny device you feel betrayed by tmobile, please give it time. I was the one who started the petition for the s7 edge. We now have root on the s7 edge it only took 5 months. To get the exploit dropped it's a weird root but it works.
Remember root is exploiting and sometimes it doesn't go as planned and can take longer doing those sudo commands.
I just want everyone to have an open mind here. These forms are ment to be informative miss leading topics need to chill.
Everyone please just chill and let the DEVS figure stuff out alot of stuff is still developing with the s7 note. It's only been out for a few days.
Sometimes it can take weeks and months to obtain root. We all know that marshmallow has brought alot of changes to the development world and how injections and cracking bootloaders etc.
I hope everyone reads this and starts to understand you need to give it time...
Ice.

That's the same thing I said give it time they will have a walk around. My LG G Pro from AT&T was locked up the same way and we had roms and recovery.

I've been around here for about six years. I've had all flagship phones: HTC Incredible, HTC Rezound, Samsung S4, Samsung Note 4 and now the Note 7. None of them were unlocked out of the box. It took from several weeks (Incredible) to eighteen months (Note 4) to get unlocked. Each phone was increasingly more difficult to hack with the exception of the Rezound, where HTC provided the unlock file.
I may be wrong, but I strongly suspect that the majority of the carriers' customers could give a fig about unlocked bootloaders and root. They either don't possess the desire or ability to do what it takes or perhaps the company they work for considers a rooted phone to be a security risk. There are just a few of us that fully appreciate the freedom of a rooted phone provides. Most of the people I've seen pass through XDA over the years couldn't begin to explain why they want their phones rooted, they just want it. The numbers just aren't in our favor.
As the OP suggested, give it time. There are some very talented and dedicated developers working on unlocks and roots as we speak. I won't promise it'll happen because I haven't the foggiest notion what it takes to develop exploits. But consider this: the Note 7 is just about the pinnacle in smartphone technology as it is. If you don't like TouchWiz/Grace, there are very good launchers available and there are apps that will disable almost all of the bloatware. Give it a chance.
This is probably the most sensible thread I have read in a long, long time. Good job, agree with everything !

That's true we only make up a small percent of people that flash roms. So they are not going to make it easy. Why? It does not benefit them at all that we root our phones. I wish they did care lol. But I have seen devs do amazing things since I have been flashing since the S2. I faith and patience that it will happen. Remember the devs do this for free on their own time.
